Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean for Thursday.
First with yesterday's news, I am Glenn Hart, and we
are looking back at Wednesday. MPs get bullied online, can
you believe? And amazingly, the female MPs get worse than
the male ones. Who would have thought orong Tamariki Andrew
(00:43):
Dickins wants a word on where they're at. Employee fraud
was the topic of discussion yesterday afternoon, stealing stuff at
work and the chase is always on, so it may
as well be in this podcast as well. But first up,
police and mental health call outs and who's supposed to
(01:04):
be doing them? Are we any closer to our resolution
on this?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Given how much attention has been put on police, What
the role should be of police in our communities, whether
they are an oppressive tool of the patriarchy, or in
fact that they are as I see them, compassionate, tolerant,
amazing men and women who are incredibly efficient at what
(01:30):
they do and are doing their level best. They're not
heavy handed, I mean I'm old enough to remember what
it was like in the eighties when it was a bit,
you know, young cowboys going in their truncheon's ahoy. These
days it's a whole lot more nuanced and complex. And
that's the way. But what on earth makes our thousand
(01:53):
more than a thousand people a month fill out an
application to join the police? Are these young school leavers?
Are they men and women who have had some life
experience and have had some interactions with police and feel that,
you know, they want to give back in a day
(02:16):
In a day and age where we are so self obsessed,
we're so insular, we're all about the self. The ego
being a police officer is a really community minded calling.
How is it that there are so many many people
who feel that it's a calling for them?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Car chases? I think I've told you before. I was
at one stage related to a person who was in
the police and who literally told me once that the
best thing about the job was car chases, not mental
health call outs. He didn't he didn't mention that I'm
(03:01):
not related to that person anymore.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
News talk ze been.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Now Online bullying can certainly affect your mental health. I
think Ryan has I think his view on this stuff
because the report's come out into how bad it is,
especially for female MPs. I think Ryan has got a
similar view to me.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
Actually, and having worked alongside some high profile women in
the news in my time, I know that they get
stuff about their appearance far more than men do. I
know that for a fact, because I've seen the emails.
It's crap. Here's the problem. I don't think it's ever
going to stop or change. The Internet is a cess
pit and it brings out the worst in people. We
all know. Social media is bad for children, it's bad
(03:46):
for adults. It rewires the brain. It makes us dumb,
it makes us intolerant, people get radicalized. Doesn't matter which
side of politics you come from. Social media is generally
not a rational destination for meaningful debate in my experience.
So my question is, why go there if it is
so toxic, so bad for your mental health, The stress,
(04:08):
the anxiety, the depression, switch it off. I did exactly
that a couple of years ago. I got rid of
the apps on my phone. What you did, don't see,
you can't hurt you. My life has been a miserably
better ever since. People say, oh, but I need it
for work or to communicate with constituents for an MP.
We manage just fine pre Internet people. We have email
(04:32):
where bad words can be screened and binned before reading.
If anything, politicians should be leading the charge on this
and saying to young people, hey, email me, because actually
phones aren't that great for you. Is it going to
change society doing this?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
No?
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Will it change your life without a doubt.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah, leave it to the experts. That's my advice, because
I mean people say, oh, well, you know, we've got
to be on social media, especially if we're politicians and stuff,
because that's where our you know, our bases our electorate.
Well you've got a social media manager him. Ye, leave
(05:14):
it to them. You don't have to look at it.
Bryan's right, it's a SESSP didn't ye. I wouldn't go there.
I don't go there.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
U's talk sid right.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Tamariki and their targets and ah, imagine, I've never run
an organization like that anyway. I think Andrew Jackins has
got a few ideas.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
I haven't mentioned Ru's name for a while. He was
murdered in October twenty twenty three. Nobody has been charged
for killing him. There was anger then and anger now.
When the police who were there when he suffered, sorry,
when the people who were there when he suffered did
not cooperate with the police. They were there, they say nothing.
Those people were and are Rosie Modonga, her partner, Dylan Ross,
(06:01):
and Ru's mother Storm Wall. They were and they are
ruse Fano. What happened people, It's being two years and
two Christmas is what happened two birthdays. The uplifting of
kids is a very serious thing, and they need to
be housed in safe places with good people. But the
(06:23):
history of oranga tamariki suggests that too many of the
supposed saviors are in fact predators hiding in plain sight.
There is no easy answer to this, which is why
I've spoken about this for decades. And the only thing
we can have is strong vigilance by our agencies, by
orang A tamariki, And the only thing we can hope
(06:45):
for is that good people come forward to help the
kids that have been vieused.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, I mean, bad stuff happens, unfortunately, and as much
as we would like it not to, time and again
it does. I just console myself that we're not as
bad as some places and try and move on. Yesterday afternoon,
(07:15):
they were talking about employees who commit fraud. I don't
know why, but they were Air company.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
We had an office Laity that committed forward with us,
and she was working for another company at the same time,
so she was double dipping on both of us. Wow
and yeah, I know. And she came to one hundred
grand just after but just over. But I mean the
signs really are hers was definitely greed not need. And
(07:48):
she did up her house and new car, everything like that.
And I remember looking at us thinking to do that,
what's going on there? And but you know, we let
the ball down. We I was sick head operations, et cetera.
And she took over. What they do is they zoom
in and they take over. They'll go, I'll do their
I'm told you this year you relate, you know, and
(08:10):
then they're they're then and then they're doing falsome voicing
and then a little stuff you confront you did you Mark?
Did you ever have to Eric Contant? Did he picked up?
But we went to court We thought it because we
didn't want through doing it to someone else.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
My main question on this is this office lady, is
that still an official position? At some great lady with
what you sign up to do on your contract? Can
I apply to be an office lady? News talk z
Bean not being so silly, Glen, all right, let's looking
(08:54):
to Marcus talk about the Chase.
Speaker 7 (08:56):
Is it into getting a version of the Chase? Although
it sounds a little bit timid. We're getting just four episodes,
so I reckon if they're going to do four episodes,
you're not going to put much effort into it. But
it might be a teaser seif they work. So I'm
sure it's expensive to film, and I don't know. If
New Zealand's got chasers, they could wheel up some of
(09:18):
those people that used to do well in Sale of
the Century. Find some of those people, some of those
quiz legions. It was always that woman and I had
a guessk and wasn't. I presume she's deceased now, But anyway,
so that's going to happen the New Zeland version of
the Chase. They're going to film it in Sydney. Go figure,
and you've got to pay your own way to get there.
(09:40):
Go figure. The Chasers, Well, I'm not sure they want
Higgety on leganty, Higindy. She's going to be one, so
applications are open. I hope they aren't using in related questions,
I don't know why they're just doing four Travel and
(10:02):
accommodation cost would be at the participant's expense, so clearly
on budget anyway, So I don't know why they're doing
just four shows. Because TV don't do much local TV anymore.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
So there we go.
Speaker 7 (10:20):
So there's going to be a new Zeran version of
the Chase? Is anyone interested in that? Will you apply
to go on? Who should have hosted? Where do you go?
You go with the Husking or do you go with
the Barnet?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Who knows?
Speaker 5 (10:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (10:32):
I don't know if these people want to do it
for four shows and who do you get as the chases?
Would you go on it? I hope there's locally engineered questions.
I think that would be quite fun. But I don't
think New Zealand has that because they tried Who Wants
to Be a Quizillionaire and that was filmed in Australia
as well. I think it was all right, but on
he went for the one series because I don't think
(10:53):
the market is big enough to do a big budget
show and that's a situation there with that one.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
It's weird that we can't seem to maintain a a
quiz show, isn't it not? Since Sales a century Sale
of the Century went for a very long time and
we seem to be able to sustain that. But yeah,
ever since then, we just can't quite seem to manage
(11:22):
to find I don't know, good prizes, good hosts. I mean,
if Mike Hoskin couldn't make Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire work, who can? I am a glen Heart. I'm
not putting myself forward to make that quite clear, but
(11:43):
I am the host of this and I'll see you
back here again tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (11:46):
And I'll do it again.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
