Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talk Said be
follow this and our Wide Ranger podcasts now on iHeartRadio
Used Talk Said Talk.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Hello, Mabutiful Beanies, and welcome to the bean the Weekend Edition.
This was yesterday's news. I am Glen Hart and we
are looking back at both Sunday and Saturday. How do
we do it? And that's why it's the weekend edition.
Trump Hotan, That's that's Settle, That's great, the All Blacks,

(00:48):
the Warriors, Joey san Diego, Ago and San Diego Joey
from the Pixies. Who knew that he had a last name.
But before any of that, Oh yes, see COVID Inquiry
Part two, Return of the Killer COVID Inquiry. Where does

(01:10):
all this leave us anywhere?

Speaker 3 (01:12):
The virus has cast a long shadow in New Zealand,
though our response undoubtedly saved a lot of lives, but
it wasn't without its costs. The pandemic might have been
over ages ago, but the economic and social impact endure.
And one thing I would add to the Royal Commission's
conclusions thus far is that next time I think we

(01:33):
need to find a better respectful way to hear and
consider dissenting views. Media obviously plays a critical role in this.
But although I think we did a reasonable job last time,
I reckon next time is going to be so much
more difficult. Depending on the circumstances. It may not massively

(01:57):
change government policy or the public health response. We don't know,
but given the conspiratorial nature of the fringiest elements, it
may honestly be an impossible task. Nevertheless, I just think
one of the key lessons from the COVID years is
that somehow making people feel heard and respected instead of

(02:20):
ostracized is a vital part in preventing the worst of
the societal division that still afflicts us years on.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Well, yeah, I mean like it's still literally afflicting people.
My mother in law was in hospital all weekend. It's
COVID in quite a bad, bad state. So that's not
very good, is it. So yeah, I think a lot

(02:49):
of people think that it's all over and done with
until they get it again. News talk, Right, So the
Trump Putin meeting, we've managed to sow pretty much all
the problems of the world as a result of that.

(03:11):
Couldn't be heavier.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
A lot of excitement and anticipation preceded this meeting. Did
we do we make any progress?

Speaker 5 (03:22):
Well, they've agreed to continue talking. But you know, let's
be very honest. The clear winner was Putin. I actually
found there was a wee bit of projection in the
American approach. The red carpet, allowing Pudin to ride in
the limo, the overfly by fighter jets. That's the sort

(03:44):
of stuff Trump likes. He likes that a lot. Yeah,
a guy like Putin is not impressed by such displays.
And so I thought, you know, this is what Trump
would like to receive in Russia.

Speaker 6 (03:59):
Is that why I think they dished it out this
because he thought, well, this is how I'd like to
bear save.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
Let's do the same for Lad.

Speaker 5 (04:05):
Yeah, except that as an old KGD officer, Vlad is
not impressed by showy displays of military might and so
and then instead Putin turned around and I won't say
that he played Trump like a violin, but he said, yes,
the twenty twenty election was stolen, you know, went on

(04:28):
and basically repeated to Trump many of the claims that
Trump has made over the years about that election, denying
that the Russians were involved in the twenty sixteen election anyway,
as an example of mastery and manipulation. I thought Putin

(04:48):
was clearly the winner. Now the substance of the talks,
you know, they agreed to keep on talking. The key
here is that Trump said that if they didn't get
a ceasefire on the day, there would be severe consequences
for Russia. And I think what he meant by that
was secondary sanctions on Russian oil and natural guess exports

(05:08):
to places like China and India. Yeah, that did not happen.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I'm starting to think the only thing that could have
worked out better for Poodin is if he hadn't turned
up at all. That's what I would have done. If
I'd been prison I would have sent. I still would
have sent the plane, and then just nobody would have
got out of it, and then it would have started
up and left again. Meanwhile, there'd be live footage of

(05:35):
me fishing shirtless on a horse if I were Pudin.

Speaker 6 (05:42):
Do you talk sid right?

Speaker 2 (05:45):
So the weekend means support, let's jump in. It looks
like the All Blacks. It's cool. I'm fatter than a
little bit against the Argentinians.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
First, but of the second half. The twenty minutes from
halftime through until about minutes sort of let's say sixty
sixty five, when Argentina did have momentum. What is the
best way to combat that on the field. What sort
of conversation should have been going on as Argentina started
to get a bit of a hit of steam up.

Speaker 7 (06:13):
I think you you just concentrate on your basics, you know,
the what you need to do defensively, you know, just
making sure you're all connected, you're all talking, you know
you should, just making sure that you are where you
where you need to be, you know, at a time
because you know, as we know, all all games, all
test matches, and that there's there's ebb and flow. So

(06:37):
Argentina had that obviously, and we you know, we'd made
a few changes as well, so I think it was
just time to settle in and and just just do
it's basics. Really, to be honest, there's a lot a
lot of talking. You know that. There's a saying that
you know, the more you talk, the less you actually
have to tackle. So just making sure you're making sure

(06:57):
you're connected, you know, and you know you know where
where everyone is, and and you just go through and
trust what you do.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
It's quite telling there from Frank Burns. Don't get me wrong,
I love Frank Buntz. Thought he was amazing and he
was playing for the All Blacks. But this whole just
trust what you do philosophy. I think it's cost the
All Blacks quite a few World Cups over the years,

(07:29):
and I think that that's an insight as to where
the whole no plan the issues come into it. There's
too much trusting what you do and not enough reacting
to what the other team's doing. Don't get me wrong.
Delighted they had a convincing win. I hope they went

(07:51):
again next weekend, although I have confidently predicted that they'll
only be the Argentinian it's one out of two games.
Moving on to the League, I'm also delighted the Warrior
is no problems there.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Right after three straight losses. Rich, how important is just
getting a win rather than the manner in which you
achieve it?

Speaker 8 (08:09):
Yeah, good, good question. Well, first of all, it's very important,
and you know, well with away. Last week I watched
I watched the Dragons playing played very very well again
Crnallan and the commentary on the TV, and that was
saying about the Dragons record again again top eight teams,
and I sort of thought a question at the moment

(08:31):
is what's the top eight team? Because there's teams that
are in and out of the eight, but there's teams
like the Dragons playing exceptionally well. You know, there's teams
when you're going down to almost eleventh and twelve position
that you like, everybody's just capable of being anybody at
the moment. And you know, we came up again Aside
in good form, and I think on the back of
three defeats, you know, one of them very close one.

(08:53):
It was just important for us to get the win
for sure, and obviously an opportunity because of the previous
night's results to put ourselves in the top four. So
you know, it's in our arms. It's been a long
season and we've had a lot of a lot of
things to contend with along the way, but you know,
we're in there. We're still fighting and you know, I

(09:15):
know we're a team that will will fight to the death.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Has it been a long season? Has it been longer
than other seasons? Why is that? Why has the season
been so much longer? And also is it differently to
different teams? Has it been longer for the Warriors than
for other teams. I mean, I know time is relative,

(09:41):
but without getting into quantum physics, surely that's not true.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Is it news talk?

Speaker 6 (09:48):
Has it been right?

Speaker 2 (09:50):
How has the passage of time affected the Pixies and
what they do and how they tour these days? Let's
find out.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
And Joey of the Pixies.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah, you are doing things a little bit differently. This
tour is a little bit different to previous Pixies tour.
Just give us an explanation about the different shows.

Speaker 6 (10:09):
Okay, so we're doing two nights. So the first night
is going to be Bosonova and Trumpleman, the albums all
in sequential order, just the way it's listed. And the
second night will be we call it our general set,

(10:30):
which will be just like a mishmash of every things
from the other catalogs, and you know, we'll concentrate on
some of the new stuff new album.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
So why did you why did you want to do
things differently? Why do you want to do the two
quite distinct shows?

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Uh, you know.

Speaker 6 (10:50):
We don't we First of all, selflessly, for me, we
get to stay in the same city twice, two nights,
two days, and I get to look around and relax,
you know. So that's good for us and also you
know for the for the fans out there, you know,
they get two different shows if they choose to go

(11:13):
to two shows.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yeah, yeah, I think people will. But it's you know,
remarkable to reflect on things a little bit, so boss
and over, I think is what thirty five years old?
This year? Trump? My mom must be what thirty four
years old? How do you reflect on those albums?

Speaker 6 (11:29):
Well, it was a long time ago. You know, every
time we make a record, I'm proud of it. After
a little while, the first, you know, when I get home,
I go, God, damn, did I do everything that?

Speaker 5 (11:47):
You know?

Speaker 6 (11:48):
Did I was it? Did I do everything I can?
Did I give it a one hundred percent?

Speaker 4 (11:52):
But I do?

Speaker 6 (11:53):
You know, but it's like, you know, what's more than
one hundred percent? Really? Yeah, that's it? You just put
it out, you know, that's it.

Speaker 3 (12:02):
Do you find yourself reflecting on, you know, the different
creative choices you made thirty five years ago? When you
when you're forced to go and reflect on an album,
even things like like the sequencing of tracks and that
kind of thing, do you do you find yourself going, Man,
if I were riding Boston over today, I would do
something a bit differently.

Speaker 6 (12:23):
No, I think the albums were a sequenced right correctly.
The only thing that you know, had we thought about
that we were going to do this live, we would
we would sequence it better so we don't change guitars
as often.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
That is genius, isn't it to make it widely known
that they're going to be doing completely different shows on
different nights. So if you want to see it all,
you've got to go at least twice. It's very much
like the way I do the News Talks they had
been podcast, and then I do the Rerap podcast, which
is like this one, but it's mostly about the stuff

(13:06):
that Mike Hosking has been saying during his You can't
just listen to one of them and think that you've
got you've heard everything. To make sure you subscribe to both.
I am a Glen Hart. That has been news Talk.
We have been the weekend edition. We'll be back with Tuesdays.
