Speaker 2 (00:20):
Used Talk said be Talk.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean for Wednesday.
First of yesterday's news. I am Glen Hart, and we're
looking back at Tuesday. The idea of a rates cap
that sounds good, doesn't it? The weather sounds bad. I
mean it was windy enough at my place following the
players where they actually had some weather, which is where
Marcus was and Tyler needs a barbecue. But before any
(00:47):
of that, this idea of labors for the Future Fund
that's setting the world on fire, that idea, and I
won them the next election, I.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
Think Patrick Smelly put it brilliantly too here The labor
proposal of the Future Fund suggests either that the party
is economically illiterate or that it's target AUDI is presumed
to be, which is so true. The Future Fund criticizes
New Zealand's super fund for only investing eleven percent of
(01:18):
his access assets in New Zealand, as Patrick Smelly points out,
the reason for that, and you know, and I know,
but the vast majority don't is that the Superfund's job
is to fund pensions and get the best possible results
from its investable capital, which means not over exposing itself
to a small, vulnerable economy like New Zealand's. It is
(01:42):
basic risk management. But no, this cornerstone of the next
labor government criticizes the Superfund for not investing all of
the funds in New Zealand. Yeah, it's really concerning. It
(02:04):
is really concerning if this is the best they can
do that. I know that everybody who cares has been
waiting to hear what its policy is going to be
so we can compare and contrast. The coalition government has
not set us on fire. Okay, let's see what labor
can do. Wow, that's it. That is simply not good enough,
(02:30):
and it is quite frankly, for those of us who care, terrifying.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I mean I heard a lot of people talking about
this yesterday, but it was one of those Peanuts animated
cartoons situations where the adults talk and all you hear is.
Speaker 5 (02:51):
I have no idea what this is all about. I'm
going to be pretty honest with you. I literally sat
here listening to the interviews about it. STO didn't they didn't.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Get any penetration with me News Talk come on here
that you're good at understanding this stuff.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
I bet you a grip when you hung on every word.
Speaker 6 (03:09):
I think it's fair to say, don't you think that
Labour's first policy has been a flop. It's been panned
by pretty much everybody worth listening to or worth reading.
I mean, I see Mikey Sherman over over at TVNZ
liked it last night. She called it a solid first
hat on tally, but I think everyone else seems to
have seen through what Chippy's trying to do here. Let
me quote you some Tom pull A Strekker at The Post.
(03:31):
Labour's Future Fund hits the buzzwords, but the rationale is
hard to follow. Patrick Smelley at Business Desk. This suggests
either that labor is economically illiterate, or that its target
audience is presumed to be Radio New Zealand. The distinct
lack of detail has left Labour somewhat exposed, evoking echoes
of other ambitious projects that fizzled, like hey, we build
all the green investment fund. Gene Tibscherany at The Herald
(03:53):
says this is actually less about making new Zealand wealthy
and really more about having a crack at national impossible
asset sales at the next election. Henry Cook at the
Post Labour's Future Fund promises everything and nothing. It's hard
to know what to really make of this. And then
Patrick Smelley again, because his piece is just so eviscerating,
Labor will have to do a whole lot better than this. Now,
basically what you could take from that is that no
(04:14):
one serious is convinced by it, because Labor has taken
a great idea, which is Singapore's Temasek, and then taken
all all the taken away all the things that make
tamask successful. Tamas six seals assets, this lot is not allowed.
Tamasik invests overseas, this lot is not allowed. That's just
a couple of the problems. Yeah, I mean the list, honestly,
the list of problems in this policy announcement is so
long we could do an entire show about it. I
(04:36):
suspect Labor knows this. I think they know it's a
bad idea. They just think we're too stupid to realize
how bad an idea it is. They think that we're
going to be hoodwinked by all of the feel good
slogans about investing in New Zealand's future and cutting out
the foreign investors and stuff like that. But I'm happy
to report that, judging by the media around up, I
just read you when we're not at all as stupid
as Labour thinks we are. We can see a dog
(04:57):
policy when we're presented by worth one and this is one.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Yeah, I supposed to appeal to. I feel like.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Labor's target market. I'm doing air quotes there as I
said that. If you couldn't detect that I was doing that,
I feel like they're not really they don't really care
about this sort of stuff massively. I mean, I'm making
it a wild generalization there, and so are they appealing
to the people on the other side of things?
Speaker 5 (05:22):
And if they are, those people are all going.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Hm us talk sipy right while.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
We're doing a bit of a policy rap. What does
Ryan Bridge think of the idea of.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
A rates cap? It would be good, doesn't it? What
could possibly go wrong?
Speaker 7 (05:40):
The good people of Gore have re elected Bell for
a second term quite handsomely, so we say we want
lower rates. Of course we do, but the question is
what will it cost us? Will capping them actually hurt
us a local economy productivity efficiency if you delay or
shelve projects. Last week, Wayne Brown told me on Herald
(06:01):
Now that Auckland could have a zero increase next year.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Doesn't that sound amazing?
Speaker 7 (06:06):
A zero increase next year if it wasn't for the
City rail link, the spending coming online for the city
railing because it's opening up, it's a major transport project.
It'll in theory benefit Auckland and the country who paid
for it. Well, we all did, the jaffers and the taxpayers.
If we want lower rates, we could just not run
(06:26):
any trains on the tracks. But is that sensible. Don't
get me wrong here. I am the first to criticize
the big spending bozos who chuck money at dumb stuff.
But most council spending isn't that. Most of it is
stuff that we need. D Day is looming for the
government's plan to cap rates and it needs to be
(06:47):
a measured response. We need spending on pipes and roads
to continue, and waste on disco lose somehow flush down
the duney.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
I just wonder if councils really mean it need to
be involved in doing major projects and she just stick
to minor projects like having enough rubbish bins for everybody,
and we'll leave the government to sort the major projects.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
How about that? Right a blowy old day yesterday.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
I mean, I thought I was in trouble when I've
got an empty planter box with trellis attached to it
at the moment, because look, I don't want to get
into it, but there've been recoating the deck and it's
a whole drama. But anyway, the appshot of all that
is that it was just sitting there on the slope
back lawn and then the wind came along yesterday and
(07:41):
blew it over. But at least I wasn't in Bluff.
Speaker 8 (07:43):
The weather in Bluff today was extraordinary. I went out
walking and the hail in the wind, it was just
you couldn't actually head off into it. Then the power
lines got blind over. They did, They did a bush
fix and we had a power cut a town power
cup between four and seven, So I drove into town
about then. Two of the power lines were on leans.
(08:04):
They're replacing those. There was a horse trailer from Kennard's
Higher that had actually gone into the Who would have
taken that down?
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Empty I don't know.
Speaker 8 (08:13):
There's no sign of the car, but the fire is
route to that. Presume that's where they were.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Shomozel.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Now, I know I've said nice things about Marcus using
the word shamozel before, but I'm staying to wonder if
he's saying it too much. Now, you can have too
much for a good thing, you can have too much chamozzle.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Also, is he the.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Only one who calls firefighters fieries.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
I've not heard anybody refer to.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Them as firies before. Anyway, Yes, it was extremely windy
news talk, ze Bean.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
We're going to try and sort Tyler's barbecue situation for him.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Now.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
I'm not sure how this guy gets anything done. He
always seems to be at a bit of a loss
to what to do next. He need somebody in his
life to tell him what to do. Maybe that's mad.
Speaker 9 (08:57):
I don't have a barbecue at the moment, so I'm
knee deep in. I didn't realize how many options that
were out there. I'm knee deep in trying to find
a barbecue, and everybody's been telling me to buy a webber.
But I'll go to tell you, I'm liking the look
of the old jump Buck.
Speaker 10 (09:11):
How sort of bigger barbecue you're going for? You're going
for those one sort of a monster one about as
big as an indoor kitchen kind of situation.
Speaker 9 (09:18):
Now, loog nice, wouldn't that? I mean, that's that's why
I'm throwing this question out because I'd love to go
full hog.
Speaker 10 (09:23):
But look, my neighbors put a full hog barbecue on
has Berm and it's been sitting there for.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
About two weeks.
Speaker 9 (09:30):
Oh, where's this address?
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Well, I wouldn't want to give out my address on
the air.
Speaker 9 (09:34):
Oh not your address.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Yeah, but if I give out my neighbor's address, it's
my address.
Speaker 9 (09:37):
Okay, yeah, good point on.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
The house beside my neighbor.
Speaker 9 (09:41):
If it's still there, just put my name on it
and I'll be around straight after the show.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I don't know the fact that's been out there for
so long.
Speaker 10 (09:46):
I mentioned there's been a few tire kickers that have
decided to reject it, but.
Speaker 7 (09:49):
The old jump Buck.
Speaker 9 (09:50):
I mean, look, everybody knows I don't like to spend
too much money and I want the biggest barbie barbecue
I can get for the lowest price. But if anyone
out there is.
Speaker 7 (09:59):
Rockett Jumpbuck, how big do you need it?
Speaker 9 (10:01):
I want at least a six burner. I really got
to have a six burner. We a we thing on
the side for the pan.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
I you tend to agree with Tyler and that he seemed
to be.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
Suggesting the weather is a bit overrated.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
I don't see the point of it. I've never seen
one that's big enough for my needs. I don't know
if I need a six burner. I just want a
nice flat hot plake, a little bit of the grilly side,
because you can never read. There's only so many things
sausages on the grill apart, but that's about all everything
else needs to be on that nice flat hot plate,
doesn't it, am I using my varbaite? You're wrong. And
(10:39):
as for the thing on the side for your pots, you.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Don't need that, Tyler. You're never going to be.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
Cooking rice or potatoes, boiling potatoes or anything like that.
You'll do it once and then you realize that it
took you about three hours to do because you can't
get it as hot as you can on the stoven side,
and then you'll never use it again. I don't worry
about that. That's my advice for Tyler anyway. Seems to
be a guy who needs a lot of advice. So
that's mine and we'll be back with more advice For
(11:08):
more hosts.
