Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's remind everybody who Katie is.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Katie is the crazy person who swam from the Bay
Bridge to the Inner Harbor, the Bay to what was
it the Bay to Baltimore swim that you did last year.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Yeah, that's right, And we're going again this year.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Yep, going for number two and keeping them moment, I'm.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Going the and so is it?

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Well?

Speaker 1 (00:25):
How when did you decide that you were going to
do it again?

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Probably immediately after finishing last year?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Did you really so you knew that? Did you know
then that you wanted Well, is this going to be
an annual thing? Or you just knew you wanted to
do it at least one more time?

Speaker 4 (00:43):
So I would definitely love to do this swim many
times in my lifetime. I would definitely love to do
it often, but right now looking forward to number two
and working towards making this an annual event for other
swimmers as well. That's part of part of the goal here.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
When you say other swimmers, like, do you mean like
to do it as like a I don't know what
you would call it, but like like to have a
bunch of you out there doing the swim together.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Yeah, yeah, I mean this kind of distance when you're
talking twenty four miles and every swimmer needs a boat
and a crew. It's definitely a small roster of swimmers
to run as an event, but that's definitely definitely the hope.
And you know, I really am just very excited for
the swim and looking forward to continuing to continue to
talk about our harbor right and celebrate the progress and

(01:35):
healthier harbor for everybody.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
And part of it is, like last year, there was
obviously the backdrop of you know, the Key Bridge, but
there was also the whole thing about like them wanting
to make sure that the water was clean and like
to be able to encourage swimming in the inner Harbor.
I'm assuming it's that that kind of falls into place
again where it is to help promote how clean the

(01:58):
water is and cantinue to encourage the water or people
to keep the water clean and as well as the
city to keep the water clean.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, absolutely so.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
I'm I'm again partnering with mister Trashheel's Friends Waterfront Partnership
and starting yeah, starting in May there you know, through
the season they're testing the water five five days a
week and five different locations and making sure that we're
meeting those swimbole standards for these kind of events especially,

(02:30):
and really, you know, we want to just keep this
conversation going. And there were so many amazing events last year.
My first Bay of Baltimore swim to be the first
person that made history, which was amazing, water front partnerships,
Harbor Splash had over one hundred and fifty people jump

(02:50):
in the harbor. But that and that's a huge milestone
and absolutely big to celebrate, but not a finish line.
We're still we still need to be having this conversation
and supporting the progress.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
That is there.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
But I think back to remember last year when you
did it, the reception that you got when you swam
into the harbor, do.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
You it was? It was?

Speaker 1 (03:09):
It was it was crazy, it was awesome.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Yeah, it was the most wild experience I've ever had.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
It was truly so cool.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
I mean, there were there were people out on the
water chewing us on in the morning and you know,
up at sunrise and along the shore with signs, and
then as we came into Baltimore, it was just so
many people everywhere and.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
I mean absolutely unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
And that and that's and that's part of you know,
the opportunity to highlight and celebrate Baltimore through my sport.
And I understand my sport is is kind of a
weird one, you know, and very unique. It's I mean,
it's an honor, right and and just I'm really excited
to continue to.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Be able to celebrate my city.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
Hey, what is the what is the what?

Speaker 4 (03:51):
Like?

Speaker 1 (03:52):
What dates are we zeroing in on?

Speaker 4 (03:55):
Yeah, So, since open water swimming is so weather dependent, right,
not only do you want to be outside of heavy
rain for healthy water, but you also you know, I
need low wind and anything that's gonna you know, you
don't want, you don't want things that are gonna make
that twenty four miles harder. So my window is May
eighteenth through the twenty third, which was a little bit

(04:19):
that was more of the original window planned last year, right,
so you know, we pushed it back after the Keywards collapse,
and that made last year some especially challenging because of
water temperature. Right, our Potasco River and Chesapeake Bay is
pretty shallow, so it warms up pretty fast. So last
year my swim that you know, the water within the eighties,

(04:41):
which as an athlete, especially with ninety air temperature is
really hard, and I had a water sumroom training for
really cold swims or at least much colder like the
English Channel, which I have my third one.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Coming up this July too.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
So my my hope in May is the water will
be more in the sixties. You know, even if it's seventies,
that's okay, but definitely a safer temperature.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Hey, was there anything I'm trying to think back, was
there anything last year? And maybe the water temperature aside, right,
but was there anything last year that that surprised you
where you were that in the in the course of
the twenty four miles where you were like, oh, wasn't
expecting that that you would either be a more prepared
for this year or at least going in You're like, okay,

(05:29):
now I know to expect that.

Speaker 4 (05:33):
Well. I think a big part was so since we
had to push that back, we you know, really I
just kind of took whatever day I could.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Possibly take, right.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
I wanted to make that when happened last year and
really make that mark. So the tide was actually against
me as I was coming.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Into the finish.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
So when you plan at the water, something is really
important to plan around the tide. So Hopefully this time around,
the tide is more the timing is more of a favor,
so I should kind of fight an outgoing tide in
the beginning, have a little bit of slack tide, and
then get a push as we get into high side.
It'll hopefully push me in towards Baltimore. So I knew

(06:15):
last year that that was gonna be tough. And if
anyone was tracking and suddenly I slowed down getting closer
to Fort McHenry, that was that tide really going against me.
So hopefully this year I'll kind of get that push,
especially when I'm the most fatigued.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
And I do remember, like last year you talked about tracking.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
We did, like everybody was tracking and following along, but
also which was through like a like like websites you'd
see it online. But correct me if I'm wrong. We
also were able to make donations last year.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Yeah, absolutely, And and that is a huge, huge helpful
piece you know, this to be as an athlete, it's
really helpful to get that support and funding.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
This sport is definitely.

Speaker 4 (06:56):
Requires a lot of a lot of parts, a lot
of team and so.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
I do I do have a go fundme setup and
that'll help with the costs for the.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Swim as well as my third English channel in July.
So my twenty twenty five season is pretty exciting. And
with that go fund me, ten percent of those proceeds
will also go towards creating a nonprofit which is called
Baltimore Open Water Swimmers BOWS, with a vision of fostering

(07:27):
community around open water swimming and hopefully you know, hosting
these events and that BOWS will become the governing.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Body of the swim.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
That's awesome for.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
You and hopefully other swims in Baltimore.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Two good for you, And it's Swimkadie dot com right.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
That's it.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Yeah, and if any any businesses or companies want to
want to join me and as a sponsor and partner,
I'd love to love to talk to them as well.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
Awesome Katie.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
I'm I'm stoked that you're doing I'm sure we'll talk
to you as as you get a little bit closer.
But yeah, swimkdie dot com for all the information. I
was stoked to see that you're doing it again. I
was glad we were able to track you down and
like I said, we'll talk to you as we get
a little bit closer. And remind everybody.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
Yeah, I'd love that, and I'd love for people to
come to the finish, you know, big piece. I've heard
from people it's like, oh, now that I know what
it is, I'd love to follow.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Right exactly exactly.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
It should be a fun finish.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Excellent, Katie, was good talking to you, and yeah, we'll
talk to you as we get closer.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
All right, amazing, Thank you so much
