Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to a Bobarto Ford Real Animals Radio show.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Your weekly voyage into Florida.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
Fishing, presented by Hubbard's Marina.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hosted by Captain Mike Anderson and Captain Tillan Hubbard.

Speaker 4 (00:13):
Good morning, Tampa Bay, nine seventy WFLA talking fishing. Going
to be here until eight o'clock.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Unfortunately only till eight o'clock.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
So unfortunate. I know somebody who's happy that we're only
here till eight o'clock. Derek Debos and our wives and
our wives.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
There's that.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
There's that that as well, lots to get to today.
Hopefully you're having a blessed start to your Saturday morning.
We certainly appreciate you joining us. You can also join
us on the Real Animals and Hubbard's Marina Facebook pages.
You can leave your questions and comments there, or you
can give us a call at one eight hundred nine
six nine nine three five too. We absolutely love interacting

(00:58):
with our listeners and our view viewers from the from
the live show over there on Facebook. So don't be bashful.
If you've got fishing questions, if you've got a cool
fishing story, we'd love to get them right here. It's
what makes this whole thing kind of roll. Big shout
out to our good friends at bartow Ford. If you
were in the market for a new vehicle, Dylan and

(01:21):
I both driving new trucks from bartow Ford. Great experience,
great place to get hooked up on a vehicle. If
you're looking for a place to not just be a number,
but to be part of a family, check out our
good friends at bartow Ford. You go to bartow Ford
dot com. How's that weather look.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
It's a little bit spicy with that tropical storm or
I would say invest in the Western golf and you
got aaron out there in the Caribbean making its way through,
but everything's staying away from us. So fingers crossed, knock
on wood. It's looking pretty good through the upcoming work week.

(01:59):
We have a little bit of a disturbance backside of
this upcoming weekend, so like Monday Tuesday, potentially we might
get a little bit of rain, might increase our rain chance.
Tuesday might be a little bit moderate, but nothing crazy.
We just have a little bit of tropical moisture getting
pulled into Aerin and it's going to get pooled across

(02:21):
our area. So we might have a pretty good chance
of rain there Monday and Tuesday. But besides that, I mean,
as far as the eye can see ten days on
wind finders forecast here, it's all dark blue, so pretty
much ten mile an hour or less one foot one
and a half foot. So it is summertime forecasts, right,

(02:42):
Just hurry up and wait and watch what happens in
the tropics. That's basically what we're dealing with. We're on
the backside of a last quarter moon that happened, yes
or no, that happens today, I believe, And we're about
a week away from that new moon. So this whole week,
tide should be picking up up, current should be picking up,
and we'll get to that new moon at the Saturday

(03:05):
next weekend. So all week that incoming tide should be
pretty darn good for us. We got a lot of
brackish water, a lot of low salinity water. John's Pass
has looked like the Saint John's River the last seven days. Yeah,
and hopefully this new moon will help clear some of
that out and stabilize us, get us back to a
little bit of normalcy. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
I wasn't able to be on the water here this week.
I was on the water in the Florida Keys for
most of the week, so we'll talk about that. Pick
your brain on that one. Yeah, it was an interesting trip.
I learned a lot, just lots of stuff to cover
there for sure. Weather update brought to you by our
good friends, as always at Reese Windows and Doors, Florida's

(03:46):
leading window and door company with well over fifty years
now in business. You know the deal, you know, free installation,
most windows and doors installed in just six to eight weeks.
I mean, it's pretty it's pretty simple stuff. As far
as I can tell, nobody in the business does windows
like Greece, double lifetime warranty, no freelance contractors, all the
stuff you would want in a contractor that's coming to

(04:09):
your home. It's going to install new windows. Get them
done now before this hurricane season really really gets ramped up.
It's already coming at us. But you know you still
have time to get this all done. Visit Reese Windows
dot com for more information. Great partner here at the
bartoe Ford Real Animals Radio Show. Let's go to the
phone line to here real quick. I'm assuming are a

(04:30):
resident Kayak hot dog burger griller is set up somewhere
to go for a kayak trip.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
He's got to be it the kayak Donald Donald and
Lut's what's up, buddy, Hey.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Good morning guys. Hey, sound like I had a great
trip there. Capt Mike.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah, buddy, what's going on? Talk to me?

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Okay, I'm going back out to ant clothes today. Me
and Liz went out on Tuesday, rented a pontoon boats
and I I hooked into a beast of a red
fish that I've got my real animals, bullbay Rod. I
got the pen slammer and I could not turn this
sting nice. I did, ran around the pontoon boat and wow,

(05:15):
I put Yeah, I'm using twenty pound floor of carbon leader,
and I may have put just a little bit too
much pressure and snapped, but I did see it. I
was able to get it to the top of the
water and it floated for about ten seconds, and I
thought I had him. So I'm reeling them in and
all of a sudden, he just decided to do another run.

(05:36):
Another run. Yeah, that was that was pretty awesome.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Those are the ones that keep coming back. Yeah, buddy.
As the tug is the drug, that is what they say.
The tug is the picture in that fish for the
next six weeks.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Right, oh yeah, because I actually saw it and uh
so it Liz was strapping the nets to uh and
uh that was it.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
It's like, man, you gotta blame it on Liz. You
never grabbed them that early, never grabbed in that earth.
Don't grab them that And don't get your phone, get
your phone. You gotta get a picture. No, no, don't
touch the phone until I get my hands on the fish.
Never bad luck, bad.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Luck that.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
He was still an awesome outing with her. We caught
some some bondyed heads, some trout. I even got some
mangove snapper. He got some more entries in the Star.
So that that was exciting.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Nice here.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
Yeah. In fact, me and her we're going to go
to the O. C. C. Roadhouse fishing conferenceation. She goes,
I'm going to go with you on Tuesday. I get
a yeah. Well, now I get a phone call Thursday
from work. They want they go to Dallas to do
a big audit at car dealership, to day audit Tuesday
and Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
You just Dallas.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
You just tell him no, no, I got Yeah, We're
gonna have to reschedule that trip, resubmit your request, uh,
you know, later for further disapproval.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Not doing it.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
I know.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
I was like, man, so, but we're gonna go. We're
gonna hit it next month for sure. She goes, I'll
go with you next time. So I got to hit
the September one.

Speaker 5 (07:19):
She's gonna be great.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
We got a couple of weeks off the star, so.

Speaker 4 (07:24):
Get him why you can get him in there, Get
him in there. Hey, be safe out there today.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Good luck, pardon, appreciate you, guys. Hey, guys, they hiss
they saved the tie lines.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Everyone all right.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
That is one of the most religious callers in the
history of Real Animals. Hard worry about heart attacks.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
That unbelievable, laying in the hospital bed, in the hospital bed,
where's my phone? What are you doing? He's better at
it than I am. Yeah, Sundays I'm like, oh, yeah,
that's the radio. It happens, it happens, It's all good. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
The Beautiful Florida Keys was was a unique trip. New
rule for the Real Animals Fishing team. As long as
I am blessed enough to be filming shows. We just
filmed first episode of season twenty, so super blessed. Obviously
there will no longer be any trips south in August.

(08:27):
Now on we only go north in August.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
That's all there is to feel like you should have
known that, I should have you how many seasons in But.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
But I you know, I'm like, I'm like a lot
of fishy grown men. You hear Florida keys tailing, redfish
and micro tarpin, and you just you just lose it.
You just lose all sense of yeah, yeah, oh cop,
I'm on my way. Yeah yeah, that's a good idea,
let's go down there. So the first day, we're on
the boat at six am, which I'm normally on the

(08:58):
boat around six am. No big deal, except we didn't
get off the boat until four thirty and we have
no cover, nice, no tea top of course, not I'm
on the skiff, I'm on the ko So about two
thirty or so, I started to melt like an ice
cream cone. I was like, what is going on out here?

(09:21):
And you're standing and it's you're filming a TV show.
So like normally what we would do jump in the water.
That's well, you're not jumping the water. Down where we
were anyway, there was sharks everywhere. The sharks and the
keys are bad. They're bad.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
The little puppies, Yeah, I hear you. You can see
them coming from a mine.

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Okay, especially on the front where we were. Ye you
had you jumped in the water.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Lay down, Yeah, we probably would have been hotter too,
in that shallow water ninety Yeah, the water temple was
ninety three degrees offshore though it's nice. Yeah, not at
the end of a fishing spot. Yeah, I get that.
Maybe take a little little run, little dip. It's not
It's a nice way to cool off.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
But yeah, little micro harp and tailing redfish up on
the flats at Flamingo. Yeah, very very cool trip. But
I literally I literally got off the boat at four thirty.
I went right to hawks K, took a shower, had dinner,
I put my head on the pillow at seven thirty
and didn't wake up until four o'clock in the next morning.

(10:20):
I'm like, okay, I'm ready to go do it again.
It was crazy, crazy, but very cool fish, very cool fish.
Episode one in the books. So phone lines are open
here nine six nine, nine three five two. Light these
phone lines up. Let's talk fishing. We'll be back to
the Barto Ford Real Animals Radio show Welcome back six
twenty three here at the iHeartMedia Empire. That concert on

(10:42):
the lot that they do out at bartow Ford is
a really really great event. It's well run. Beth and
I and Georgia were there last year, so uh, fantastic time. Yeah, fantastic.
I believe it. Yeah, that's do good. Every party do Yeah,
bart bartell Ford, they do it right. They do it right,
there's no doubt about it. So as you know, we

(11:03):
were talking there with our weather update, we were talking
about the windows for your home, and now I want
to talk to you about the roof of your home.
Same deal. Right we're in that stormy season right now,
these big torrential downpours sometimes they come with a lot
of wind. If your roof's in at dire shape, that
is not a good position to be in. So shingle, metal, tile,

(11:23):
flat roofs, whatever it is, repairs, replacements, Affordable Roofing Systems
is the only name you need to know. You can
give them a call today at one eighty eight three
nine seven roof for your freestment, or visit an online
at Affordable Roofingflorida dot com.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Good people. Yeah, the trip to the Keys was interesting.
But did you go to hogfish Grill? I did not.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
We ate at Island Fish Company all three nights phenomenal.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
I'm trying to steal their idea. So at Hubbard's Marina
you can go fishing. Obviously, when you come back, we'll
flay your fish up and you can go next door
to the restaurant the Friendly Fishman, get your fish cooked up,
fresh fresh ketch. Yeah, you got Cajun fried, regular fried, broiled, blackened.
But that's all we've ever done since like the eighties.

(12:15):
Take your fish broil black and regular fried, cage and fried.
I want to switch it up. When we went to
that place, what was the name again, Island Fish Company,
couldn't remember the name Island Fish Company. They have like
a litany of different choices, like it took a while
to figure out how you want to get your fish
cooked up? And that one with like the coconut is

(12:35):
crazy crazy? Which one? Which one did you do? I
didn't do fish. I didn't do fish. All that lead
up to that, through that whole story, and you just
didn't even try it.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
I didn't. I didn't. I did not have the fish.
We had the smoke fish dip. I had a lot
of stuff that I normally normal bar food. I was
so tired by the time we got there, the drive down,
getting everything that up, and then fishing all day. And
the service was so good. The beer was cold, the.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Service, I mean everything was The cider was so cold.

Speaker 4 (13:11):
The cider was cold too. I had a cider. I
had a Mike Ultra both Cold Jackwagon this week's Jackwagon
of the Week still.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
But it was.

Speaker 4 (13:21):
It really was really really great place, man. The ambiance
is excellent. They had a lot of TVs going.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Yeah, I mean down there in that marina. I liked
that location too. Everything was really at the table. You
look over and they got the whole the whole aquarium
thing going on. It's pretty wid.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
Yeah, you were right there by the water. It was uh,
it was neat and it was pretty close to Hawk's
k So it was just like a ten minute drive
from the from the hotel.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
So easy, pasy. Yeah, Nope. Back to the story that
you tried to ruin. Uh, they have when you sit
down and get your fish cooked up there, they have
like a whole huge menu. So it's not just like
two or three options, it's like twenty five options to
how you want your fish cooked up, and they have like,
all right, here's the cheap options. You can get them

(14:05):
fried or boiled or blackened. But then here's the premium options,
and it's like maybe five ten dollars more, and you
have really really awesome dishes. So that's what I'm trying
to get the friendly fishermen to do, is offer some
more gourmet options. So trying to carry that that mantra
up here. I'm not a big how do you do
your fish? I mean, if you just went somewhere and

(14:28):
ordered fish, how do you order it? I always like
it blackened or boiled, so that way I can taste
the fish.

Speaker 4 (14:33):
I was gonna say, I'm more of a I'm a
less saucy guy on my fish. Yeah, I don't need
a whole but.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
It's nice to have options, right, And my thing at
the restaurant is growing up there. I'm spoiled. I've had
fish cooked up at the restaurant for I don't know,
twenty five thirty years now, your whole life. Yeah, so
it's nice. It's nice to have some other options, right,
And what's really cool is like fish tacos, Like I'd
be nice to be able to come in and they

(14:59):
serve at the Friendly Fisherman. This incredible yellowtailed dish. It's
yellowtail snapper tacos and it's got like a mango salsa
chutney thing going crazy crazy good. It was red snapper,
now it's yellow tail snapper. They're talking about changing it
to Kobea. They keep trying to change it up so
you have different options when you show up. But man,
if I was able to bring in some gray snap

(15:21):
or some white grunts and have them do it like
that with that salsao. Okay, all right, we're having a
foodie moment this morning. I dig it, I dig it.
I lost it as soon as you mentioned it Island
Fish Company. It brings back some good memories.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah, it's a great place down there was the keys
are just an interesting just a different world, interesting place.
It is a different world, and that's what's cool at
a different pace. I can't emphasize it enough, man, that's
what's so cool about Florida. I mean, you go up
to Crystal River, totally different world, Jacko, go to Fort Myers,
totally different world. That's the key. I mean, literally, you

(15:59):
travel an hour north or south, up and down our Coast,
Big Bend destined, you know, kind of a lesser I'm fishing.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
I'm fishing the Space Coast next with Captain Jim Ross.
We're going head over there and it's so cool. And
then Southeast Florida, I mean, totally different world. Yeah, it's
there's so many great places to be and fish and explore,
and even inland away from the saltwater there's incredible freshwater
places and hunting.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
It's wild. Now we can black bear hunt. I saw that. Yeah,
I got death threats over black bears. Pretty awesome. Nice. Yeah,
Travis was at the FWC meeting talking Lane Snapper and
I was here doing an interview about black bears. We
kind of switched roles for the day. It was interesting.
And man, those black bear people who.

Speaker 4 (16:43):
Richard Richard on the South Shore says, you're in bed
with the black bear people too. Yeah, big sugar and.

Speaker 2 (16:48):
The I can't keep track of all the things I'm
getting paid by, but apparently it's a lot. I just got.
I got opinions and I'm not afraid to share them.

Speaker 4 (16:57):
By occ road outs Real Animals Fishing Conversation, Tuesday August
twenty six, seven to nine pm. Captain Jeff Hageman from
the Florida Inside of Fisher Report will be my guest
Bullbay Rods Ingle Cooler's Real Animal Swag. Put it on
your calendar Tuesday, August twenty sixth. That's coming up here
just a couple of weeks seven to nine pm. Come

(17:17):
out out and join us. We're talking fishing on the
other side. Light these phone lines up. One eight hundred
nine six nine nine three five two. We'll be back.
Welcome back six thirty six here at the bartell Ford
Real Animals Radio Show talking fishing. Phone lines are open
here one eight hundred nine six nine nine three five two.
Let's go to the phones here, check in, get a

(17:38):
report from beautiful Boca grand our legendary longtime charter captain
friend Captain Van Hubbard. Van, how are you this morning?

Speaker 6 (17:48):
I'm just wonderful. What a beautiful morning it is, gentlemen.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
And then yeah, good stuff, buddy. What's what's the world
like down there? I mean, I know it's hot, but
how's the bike?

Speaker 6 (17:58):
Well, it's beautiful.

Speaker 5 (17:59):
I this minute will be real quickly.

Speaker 6 (18:04):
We got lots of mango snapper troutler looking better then
I might have as good or better than I've ever seen.
You know, a lot of them are still right at
slot size, you know, almost big enough. But uh, the
stocks are looking real good. Got a few red fish around,
uh do Spanish mackerel off and on, some nice size
ones still tarping. If you want to work at finding them,

(18:27):
sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's not. But uh, you know,
even a pompino here and there nice.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
What about that big school of macro you were talking
about a few weeks back. You guys still have to know.

Speaker 6 (18:41):
I never heard any more of them. The the offshore
guys haven't been getting out as much. But uh, that
was just one day. Two different boats reported them everywhere.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Interesting.

Speaker 4 (18:55):
So let me ask you a question if you were
wanting to target pompau. I mean, it's my experience they
move around a lot. They're like locusts, man. They come
in and just crush an area and eat it all
up and then move a little bit. Do you find
that to be the case down there by you? I mean,
how do you attack finding pompino on a regular basis?

Speaker 6 (19:17):
Good luck? If the best way to pompena fish is
like so many other fishes, like tarpenfishing, right now, take
you have you a plan. As Scott used to call it,
a mail route of places you want to check out
and enjoy the ride and hope you get interrupted.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
I love it. You know.

Speaker 6 (19:41):
That makes me feel like if you go looking for
good luck.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
Yeah, I agree. They're tough to me. They're tough to target.

Speaker 4 (19:50):
And again, I know the places that I've caught them
over my twenty five years of doing this. I know
the places where okay, that's a Pompino spot. It's a
Pompino spot. But you you may catch them. I got
places I caught them one year really good, and then
I haven't seen them there for fifteen years. Like I
just you try to put the puzzle together, you know,
same tide, same time of year, same moon phases. You

(20:13):
go through your you know, fish log and try to
put it back together, and they're not there.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
I'm like, they're like they're like a pelagic species. They're
a head scratcher. It's weird, man, They just I don't know. Yeah,
it's like that.

Speaker 6 (20:25):
That's why they call it fishing gentlemen.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Yes sir, yes, sir, I get it. Okay, Well, just will.

Speaker 6 (20:35):
Not sit still. Very rarely do they sit still. They're
constantly moving. They're very hyper. They're very fast, which is
what's so they're They're so much fun to catch because
they zip around. I'll eave them jump sometimes when you
hook them, you know skip. And they're not too bad
eating either.

Speaker 4 (20:53):
They's tasty little critter for sure, definitely out there. White
and white, flaky meat. That's good. Let me ask you
a question about your snook fishery. How are things looking
down there on the snook side? I think are fishery
up here in Tampa Bay The snook fishing is a
little bit light. I think it's a little lighter than
it's been. Again, the blessing is we have a lot

(21:13):
of speckled trout and the red fish. Bit's been real good,
But seems to me like our snook bites off just
a little bit. Are you experiencing the same thing down
there or you think your numbers are still really good.

Speaker 6 (21:25):
Well, I'm not snowfishing there as much as I used to.
I'm spoiled. I didn't. I don't like fighting the crowds,
get that right now. For example, the boat traffic is light,
and we do have some snoke, a lot of smaller
ones that I'm seeing pictures and friends telling me they're
catching some bigger ones. And my place that usually I

(21:48):
can keep an eye on snook for the Lemon Bay area,
for example, was ski Alley. Well, with that new Milton
Pass in there, the tide doesn't flow between the two passes,
it's totally unpredictable. It showed up a bunch. It's very shallow.
So uh, that was where I used to see the
the spawning aggregations get together so that I could get

(22:11):
a good eye for the for the fish stocks. But
that's just not available. But all in all, I'm there's
plenty of little fish from everybody I talk with, and uh,
I am seeing some pictures right now some big fish
out on the beach. And our birthday boy, Scott Saydorf, Uh,
he's catching some pretty nice fish, so I know there's

(22:33):
some out there.

Speaker 2 (22:34):
He always catches nice.

Speaker 4 (22:35):
There's always a freaker too, you know, you're Dave Palmer Lose.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
That's why they have catch per united effort in our
fishery studies, because that that catch per unit of efforts
a lot different than everybody else's, Yeah for sure, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 6 (22:49):
Well, you've got to put in your time. You want
to be good at something. You've got to put in
your time. And I want to compliment Dylan. Uh, I
noticed he's reading more and more of the advertisements now
and stuff the sponsorships, and uh, he's doing a great job.
You're lucky to have such a good co hoste.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
No doubt, one of my one of my smoother moves.
I can tell you that I pat myself on the
back all the time.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
Hey, good job, you did it.

Speaker 6 (23:14):
You did yourself a favor there.

Speaker 2 (23:16):
I agree. I agree.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
I did this show by myself for a long time,
bringing in guests every week, and uh, and we still
have guests and and all that. But yeah, when Dylan
and I had Dylan as a guest a couple of
times and it went really smooth, and uh, yeah, it
just jumped at me one day. I'm sure Dylan remembers me,
Uh that little I had this little glaze over like, Hey,
wouldn't that be cool, that'd be good?

Speaker 2 (23:39):
We should do this all the time.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
To me, Well, we've we've gotten we've gotten really close
and the friendship has grown and we just have a
good time together. I cast and some of the stuff
that we do. It's just been a great partnership. So
no doubt about it. Dylan's uh, Dylan's the future voice
of Tampa Bay fishing. There's no doubt.

Speaker 6 (23:55):
Thank you, absolutely absolutely. We'll keep up the good work, guys.
We're looking forward to hearing about your trip to the
Keys there, Cap. I went down there a week ago
and didn't get to do any fishing, but had a
good time. And the highlight of my trip in Key
West is going down to the harbor when the boats
come in and watching those tarpaineat the carcasses.

Speaker 2 (24:13):
I just love it.

Speaker 6 (24:14):
It's just phenomenal.

Speaker 4 (24:15):
That's a cool thing, no doubt about it. All right, Pardner,
be good, thanks man, appreciate you good stuff. All right,
Captain Van Hubbard there legendary speaking charter, Cap. Do we
have someone else on the one? No, we toll you buddy.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
Speaking of the dock pets right that what there's like
a trend going on now, there's like a controversy over
like kids sneaking into these marinas and trying to hook
these tarpain that are dock pets. And now it's like
people are doing it more because they realize if they
put a video out there, they're going to get a
bunch of comments and interactions. So Now it seems to

(24:49):
be like a trend of oh, let's go sneak in
somewhere and hook one of these fish. We call that
the Mahoney effect. Yeah, once one person does, everybody doesn't.
If they put up a fence until you don't fish here,
you must. Yeah, but it seems to be more prevalent
than it once was. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know.

(25:11):
I'm seeing the videos more frequently at least.

Speaker 4 (25:13):
Yeah. I think that's from the where the guys man
handled that kid a little bit that was in their fish,
and I think that kind of sparked this whole thing.
So I don't know. I just you know, I mean
every dock area, especially in any kind of Marina sense
that has you know, shrimp tanks. You know how it
is you feed your snook all the time. I get it,

(25:38):
and some not all situations are like that. You know
in the past right there, those fish can come and
go and you got deep water sanctuary. There form a
lot of these places, you know, like Robbie's down in
the Keys. It's a great example. You know, those those
fish are really really shallow, they're in an easy target area.
I just I don't know. I mean, for years and

(26:00):
years and years we've been filming shows and running out
of marinas that have these huge aggregates, and a lot
of times we got footage there, you know, underwater camera
footage of snook feeding, which is, you know, great stuff
to just add to a show, but you know, to
try to catch those fish and hang a big snook,
you know.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
Yeah, And I think tarpin might be a little different
than snook too. And the fact that I saw one
person was like, well, if you hook at tarp and
it's going to jump and it's going to damage stuff,
and that makes that kind of makes a little bit
more sense, right, especially like in the case of Hubbard's marina,
we've got sixty five foot aluminum party boats. So yeah,
tarpin can jump up and slam it all he wants.

(26:37):
It's only going to hurt himself, right, Whereas like a
place like Robbie's, you got a bunch of sixteen foot skiffs,
and if a tarpin jumps up and starts slamming around,
it can break something. They could, I mean, I don't know.
I mean where it's versus a snook, right, if you
catch a snook, it's it's even a really big snook
isn't going to cause a bunch of damage.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
I just don't see the sport in it. I mean,
those fish are there just dumb. Yeah, you know, they're
just it's it's like that dumb and ha. Yeah, it's
like I don't know, it's just not I don't. I
just don't. It's hey, I caught a forty inch snook
off the dock over there where the snook lives.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
I mean, playing Devil's advocate. I think the sport in
it is not to get them to bite, because you
can get them to bite easily, right, they'll bite anything.
The sport would be trying to actually successfully land it.

Speaker 4 (27:25):
Because you're in the heavy cover. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
I mean there's listen, there's you know, dock fishing for
big snook or for tarpain. I've lost a ton of
tarbain on bridges and a lot of different places. So,
I mean, you know, it's a weird one.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
It's it's a little weird thought about it from both sides.

Speaker 4 (27:41):
And here's the other thing, here's the other wild card.
And I think about this because of the real animals
Junior pro staff that just wrapped up, uh, there's summer tournament.
So and my wife and I were talking about this.
You know, you have kids who you know, we had
a five thousand dollars scholarship winner. You know what. And
I don't think his family owns a boat. That's awesome,

(28:02):
it's pretty cool. Now they might. I don't think they
do though. I've known the family for a while and
I don't think they own a boat. But you know,
almost think about the kids that that's their only opportunity exactly.
That's why they don't have hard right, they don't have
a boat. They can't just go and again, I know
they could go out to the piers in the Skywood Bridge.
But if you have a marina that's close to where

(28:22):
you live, mom and dad are working, both both parents
are at work all the time. And the kids got
a passion for fishing. He's just trying to wed a line. Yeah,
why there's a fish.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
We've got kids at the marina who are eighteen, nineteen,
twenty years old now who I remember coming down to
the past when they were two, three, four or five
years old and hanging out. It's so cool to see
those kids grow up on that dock, and it's so difficult.
I mean, I can't tell you how frequently I have
to fight tooth and nail to keep fishing available out there,
because it's hard. You got dock lines covered in hooks,

(28:51):
you got bait everywhere, you got kids hooking pelicans, you
got you got bad apples, and every bunch you have
problems with it. So it's a constant battle to try
to keep that available to people. Yeah, it's challenging. Yeah,
but it comes down to, hey, if you follow rules,
you're not trespassing. Let the kids fish.

Speaker 4 (29:08):
Yeah again, if really not hurting anything that I don't
know what the damage is, Yeah, per se, but it'll
be interesting.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
It is challenging as a dock owner operator. It is
challenging to kids out there fishing. I get it. There's
bad apples in every bunch, making messes, creating problem purposely
hooking pelicans, you know, yeah, doing stupid stuff. Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 4 (29:30):
We'll see what our good friend Captain Jeff Page down
at Sarasota thinks of this topic. I'm sure he's got
a take on. It's been around the fishing business a
long time, one of the West Coast legends. So we'll
talk to Captain Jeff Page here on the other side.
Hopefully we'll hear from you as well. One eight hundred
nine six nine nine three five two Light them up,
We'll be back.

Speaker 2 (29:49):
We're back bartow Ford Real Animals Radio, talking fishing this morning.
It is a little bit of a warm Saturday, coming
into that quarter moon phase, but exciting times. Ready to
have a good weekend of catching fish and getting to
another week where we should have those tides picking up.

(30:10):
Talking a little bit about the keys fishing and Mike's
trip down there, and we got somebody on the line.
Mike helps, Yeah, it helps. Let's we got the legend,
Captain Jeff Page. Just check him out here in Sarasota.
Get a report. Jeffrey, how are you, my friend?

Speaker 7 (30:26):
Good morning man, buddy, I'm doing good. I checked, did
you while y'all are on break? What's the topic?

Speaker 2 (30:34):
The topic was? We were talking about how kids are
fishing around Marina's and hooking snook and tarpin and getting
a little heat for it. Now, there's some where they
purposely try to sneak into places they're not allowed, and
then there's others where seemingly potentially they're allowed. Like I
was saying this one video I watched yesterday just kid

(30:56):
walks up no one's around, drops down by a cutting table,
hooks a big snook and it takes a big run
and cuts them off immediately. And they was just getting
trashed in the comments about how silly that was and
how he shouldn't have done that, and it just sparked
a conversation, and I wanted Mike's take on it.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
We want your take on it. What do you think
about that fishing around the marinas and all that stuff.

Speaker 7 (31:20):
We have a lot of that down here, And for
the most part, that's what I thought the topic was
because I caught the end of Dylan sharing about you know,
at Hubbard's. Yeah, and for instance, our public boat ramp
Centennial Park, tenth Street, there's a pack of kids that

(31:40):
aren't so well off. You know, they're on beat up
bicycles and they have rods with broken guides and tips,
and they they're they're from the other side of the
street there, and they're just scrapping whatever they can get.
Then you've got kids, You've got kids that you know
are on social media and they want these big giant

(32:03):
PB snook my pbe personal best. Blah blah blah, and
they're down there with you know, pretty good equipment trying
to hook these big snook that as Mike knows, and
you know, Dylan, when there's a lot of charter captains
at a boat ramp and they're jumping their live, wells, well,
the snook are there.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
Right for sure.

Speaker 5 (32:24):
I remember it Gandy Boat Ramp back in the day
in the early two thousands. I was with Paul Arcos
and Chris Camp and we hooked some monsters there at
Gandy because we didn't have a good day out on
the day and Camp goes Camp Camp says, you want.

Speaker 1 (32:38):
To hook a big one?

Speaker 5 (32:40):
Yeah, And you know the rest of the story. I
think Balty Saul was watching us.

Speaker 4 (32:47):
There's still there's still there's still big snook at the
Candy boat ramp.

Speaker 5 (32:52):
Yep.

Speaker 7 (32:52):
So so regardless, like you said, pelicans get wrapped up,
people run the lines over, there's yelling, there's screen and
I mean you could start a reality show at a
boat ramp.

Speaker 5 (33:05):
It's that comical.

Speaker 7 (33:08):
And then a lot of the kids that are there,
I give them cackle. I've even brought this one kid.
I haven't seen him in a while because he's probably
driving now, but when he was on a bicycle. I
bought him a rod and reel once and I don't
know if it helped his life or not. But at
least they're doing that and they're not at home on

(33:29):
their computers and phones.

Speaker 2 (33:31):
I agree. That's why I keep fighting so hard for it.
I agree. Keep them hooked on their tackle now they
busy doing something.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
That was one of the things I said, you know,
as you don't know, for some kids, that's their only
access to the sport.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
That's it.

Speaker 4 (33:45):
Yeah, they don't have a boat, they don't have parents
that can afford a charter captain, and you know, I
mean just it's it's that's their only access to trying
to catch a fit.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
And on the flip side. Even if the kid has
other access and the boats and all that, if they
have an opportunity to busy, it keeps them out of trouble.
I agree, coming from someone who had opportunities growing up, Hey, fishing,
I had opportunities and stead I wasn't fishing. It wasn't good, right.

Speaker 4 (34:11):
I had opportunities and still got in trouble. How's your
bite down there, Jeff, give us a report from Sarasota.

Speaker 7 (34:16):
Buddy number one game right now. Inshore off shore. I
heard Dylan say on Big thirteen this morning, one forty
one sixties a sweet spot. And that's just what I
heard from my guys that I talked to for the
Florida Insider Fisher and Port even up the two hundred,
but inshore number one bite and I think you'll agree

(34:38):
with me, Mike. Find that deeper grass with lots of
bait on it, birds hovering, you know, turns, not seagulls,
and you will find good action.

Speaker 5 (34:48):
Now it may only.

Speaker 7 (34:49):
Be trout, bluefish, mackerel, catfish, ladyfish, but it's good action.
And there's actually been some small gay groupers and mangrove
snapper mixed in with it. And I'm talking as deep
as eight feet, Mike.

Speaker 4 (35:03):
Yeah, Yeah, you know what I'm I'm struggling with and
I might put you on hold and keep you over
the break here. I'm struggling with a loss of habitat
because there's some areas that my brain goes to this
time of year where it should be really good, and
I get in there and you go fishing and there's
nothing and as you look around at the bottom, the
grass is gone. We have, Yeah, such we're losing so

(35:25):
much habitat at least over by us Fort to Soota.
Is just it's got some areas to just make me
really really nervous. Now, hopefully it'll bounce back. Hopefully it's cyclical.
I'm not sure why it all went away, but we
got some areas that really I think, you know, there's.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
The reason of that is water quality. How much of
that is water temperature, and how much of that is
just the storms. Well, the fact that we had help
Helene and Milton and a lot of turbidity, a lot
of changing tides and whole passes opened up.

Speaker 4 (35:54):
Yeah, yeah, a little crazy. So are you finding the
same thing, big.

Speaker 7 (35:59):
Big area of sand came in and just covered things up, man, Yes, yes.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
I mean near shore areas. I mean you'd had two
three foot ledges that disappeared, right, you know, Yeah, whole
racks moved, you know, so it definitely changes.

Speaker 4 (36:16):
The landskography changes quickly. Yeah, when you get that kind
of turbulence, great, no doubt. Yeah, that's interesting. Interesting. Well
that's good stuff, Jeff. I'll actually I'll let you go, buddy.
That's a great call and a great report. And yeah,
we're doing the same thing. Trying to find a bite.

Speaker 2 (36:30):
Man.

Speaker 4 (36:30):
It's hot out there, a lot of them snooker a
little lock shot up. So but it's good to hear
your voice. My friend will want to try to get
you to come join us for an occ roadhouse here
and get you in front of that crowd where you
do some of your best work.

Speaker 2 (36:43):
Buddy.

Speaker 7 (36:44):
All right, let's do that definitely. And I think I'm
going for power Pool to the DCA Star Banquet.

Speaker 4 (36:51):
Okay, very nice. I didn't even got the date yet.
I'll have to see what the Hall of Famer lets
us know about that I want.

Speaker 7 (36:57):
I think it's October sometime.

Speaker 4 (36:59):
Yeah, yeah, okay, well, good be good to see you.
My brother, appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
Jan's funny.

Speaker 7 (37:04):
All the glory to God.

Speaker 4 (37:06):
Amen, my friend, Thank you, sir. He is one of

Speaker 4 (38:03):
Friend. Good stuff welcome back seven o eight here At The.
iHeartMedia empire let's get Our Visit saint Pete Clear Water
Safe boating tip of The. Weekend Here Captain, Jim Fogel
Coast Guard, auxiliary, Captain extraordinary leader. Of men, good morning are?

Speaker 2 (38:21):
You buddy, i'm, Great guys.

Speaker 1 (38:24):
I'm. Great yeah you all are making me, HUNGRY though
i got to tell you that.

Speaker 2 (38:27):
Right, now, yeah BURGERS and.

Speaker 1 (38:31):
I know Thank god ben's not, in there.

Speaker 2 (38:35):
It'll be over.

Speaker 1 (38:36):
The, top yeah, all, Right guys i'm afraid it's. That
time we got to start talking about. Hurricane, prep yeah,
thank god we don't have one down our throat.

Speaker 2 (38:45):
Right Now planet dylan WANTS what, i said we want
to dump you just.

Speaker 1 (38:56):
Hold, off, no, no no you. Don't know it's like
they when they have one that's aimed right at our.
Back door, you know it very seldom ever. Shows up
SO what i want you to do is plan right
now and then you know there's less chance of. It.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
HIT yeah i have a funny thing after you get done.

Speaker 1 (39:19):
All right first, of all if you don't have a,
written plan if you've never done, this before or you
haven't done it in a couple, of years write out.
A plan what are you going? To do don't wait
till twenty four hours before and try to get the
boat out of the water or try to go from
Here to tallahassee or something. Like that get it, done

(39:42):
now at least, a list write, it down make. A
checklist if you can get your boat out of the
water and away from. The area never stay on. A
boat never stay on.

Speaker 2 (39:56):
A boat during.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
A hurricane if you're, hauling it try to get it
placed on chalks on our real. Hard top and they
should have some ground anchors in addition to the chalks underneath.
The boat make sure if your boat lives in a
marina and you can't get it anywhere out, of there

(40:18):
make sure the dock master's got a key to. The
boat make sure that the batteries are. Charged up make
sure that everything on top of the boat. Is removed,
if not the storm's going to remove it, For you
so get it out of there, right now or at
least know where you're going to put it when you
get to the boat a day or two before and

(40:41):
you've got to. Save it tape up any any vents
on the side of the boat that might let. Water
in put some, duct tape grill tape or something. Over
it make sure you don't have any way for the
water to. Get in make sure that your scuppers are
open and the water is going to get. Out easily

(41:03):
we're talking about boats that are in the, water now
but Don't let we don't want boat getting sunk from
an accumulation. Of water they're made, to float. You know
make sure you've got. Double lines make sure there's, chaff
protection because when they start bouncing up and down and
the lines are scraping on the sides of the boat

(41:24):
or the sides of the dock. Or whatever they need,
some protection so make sure you've got some. Chaff protection
you can make it out of all kinds. Of stuff
we used to be able to go to the fire
station and get some old fire hose that they don't.
Use anymore the outer fire hoses have a couple of.

(41:45):
Different sections the intersection is made out of rubber or
the outside is a. Heavy canvas so you can cut
it and pull the outer section away from the rubber
section and it makes really good Chaff protect so consider
getting some of that now if you.

Speaker 5 (42:02):
Got time but let let's.

Speaker 1 (42:05):
Plan good let's plan this. Right now if you, Boat
tomorrow i'm going to talk about boats on the lift
and boats. On, trailers okay, RIGHT now i just want
to try to get you guys with. Big boats they're
in the water that can't escape from. The area you
got to plan, right now because it's it's just too much,

(42:29):
to do too much to, think about, you know when
the wind's already up to forty or fifty and you're
trying to get this stuff off. The, Boat rightea dylan
tell me his story right around.

Speaker 2 (42:39):
The, Corner, yeah yeah we have a written plan that's about,
ten PAGES and i feel like every storm. Gets, Longer
yeah but as far as preparing for, the storm and if,
you prepare it, doesn't, Happen right that's kind of what
you alluded to, earlier jokingly and right now we're actually
in the Process because john On Past, Hubbard's Marina. Don's

(43:01):
dock all our locations received so much Damage. From helene
we lost. A lot the one thing that kind of
weathered the storm nicely for us was our. Main office
and the reason why is we have hurricane doors and,
hurricane windows and we have pumps in. The floor so
even if we, totally flood like that office was under
about eight foot, of water but we didn't flood inside

(43:23):
the office because everything was. Sealed well and then with
these hurricane doors, and windows we put spray foam in
between them and then any water that comes through, the
foundation the pumps will work and keep the. Water out
so we were. Very blessed but long, story short we
put these hurricane windows and doors on so often and
take them off. So often, the bolts the threads that

(43:45):
go into, the wall, the anchors they get, worn out
and there's some of these windows that are missing four five.
Six anchors so this is our project right now over
the next two weeks three weeks is we're going through
and we're putting these windows. Back up we're austing, the anchors,
reseating everything making sure the gaskets, are good and doing
our hurricane preventative maintenance. Due diligence but we are talking

(44:09):
about it in. The back windows are really tough to,
put on so the, discussion, was hey let's get them
seated right and instead of putting them on and taking
them back off and potentially damaging. More stuff we're coming
into peak. Hurkking season we're just gonna put them on
and leave them up and then we're all joking and
we'll have the office already, half sealed so hopefully nothing.
Will come that's the hope in.

Speaker 1 (44:30):
The, prayer yeah that's some, good points so.

Speaker 2 (44:35):
Good points, all right, Good, stuff jimmy you put.

Speaker 1 (44:39):
Good work thank you guys for the coast Cards and
pete jim.

Speaker 4 (44:45):
Good stuff. Right there it brought to you by our.
GOOD friends A Visit Saint. Pete clearwater if you haven't
been out there to the beautiful beaches or over there
to play a little golf for something to get you
a Group of sammy on the. Beach somewhere you should
certainly check. It out one of our. Favorite. Places obviously
let's go back to the. Phones here let's try to
get in another one before. The break let's check in

(45:07):
with the Mad Snooker Captain. Dave, pomeloue david how are?
You hey you're a good one for. That question let's
Let's ask dave. The, question, so kids kids fishing some
of these marinas and and doc areas and all that
for a little tarpain and snook and. ALL that i
mean seems, to be like, you know we kind of talked,

(45:28):
about it there's some heat going on with these kids
kind of in these marinas doing. That stuff where do
you sit on, That? TOPIC dave a guy who has
to hunt him down like.

Speaker 2 (45:37):
You, do.

Speaker 5 (45:39):
Well my feeling is they could be doing a lot worse.
Than fishing but if they're picking on pets in, A
marina i can see where that might, upset people like
somebody going to the stuff pass marina and catching those
hundred snunt that later every morning and get.

Speaker 2 (45:56):
Fed money.

Speaker 5 (46:00):
But but, you know my, thing is you KNOW what,
i well like back To What jeff page shows AND
something i. Have done i'm not. Kidding you i've probably
done this at least thirty or. FORTY times i get
back from a four hour trip from like seven pm TO,
eleven PM and i see a couple of young guys,
you know on the dock FISHING and i got left

(46:21):
over bait in, the boat, you know like you guys.
Catch ANYTHING and, i, go yeah we got like. Forty
stuck and they're looking at ME like i.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
Just called them a.

Speaker 5 (46:28):
Dirty Name but i'm very. IMPOSED stuff, i, go well
how old? Are you, you know they're like. Eighteen twenty,
i'm like get in the BOAT and i take him
out for a couple hours and, give them, give them,
you know a, two hour two three hour free charter just.
For fun, BUT yeah i, don't see, you Know and
i've done that's more TIMES than i. Can COUNT and i,

(46:50):
YOU know i just because. They can't, you know there's
a lot of people that can't afford a chart and
we're not aport. A GUIDE and i have no problem.
Doing that but as far, AS kids, i mean they
be doing so much worse. Than, fishing yeah, YOU know
i don't agree with them picking, on pets like, you
know somebody dropping a bait Off of robbie's, down there or,
you know some of, these marinas they probably shouldn't. Do

(47:14):
it but those guys like in that Video on facebook,
social media those guys shouldn't have. Grabbed base, you know
they shouldn't grab that kid that. They, crossed yeah they
crossed the. Line THERE but i went fishing for fun
last night with a buddy of mine and we got
like twenty snook and then all of a sudden we
came up to the SPOT and i kid, you not
there was a hundred tarp and twenty to forty pounds

(47:38):
in front of us roll and they hit every bait.

Speaker 7 (47:42):
We threw and it was so funny because we crushed
the barber because we didn't.

Speaker 5 (47:46):
Want to try to land them right and every, every
bait everything we threw, in there. They hit and we
were just doing everything to get them come off, the
line get two or three jumps out. Of them we
must jump twenty, of them and we put we accidentally
put to the freedom. To them, but yeah they're. They're
sick i'll send you a little video of uh some of.
The action but, and, yeah kids, you know let's LET'S

(48:09):
let's i love getting kids out fishing and, that, guy
uh that's. To me there's no more fun as a
guide than having women and kids on board who haven't
ever really experienced a great. FISHING trip i would rather take,
kids fishing And and i'm all about taking, you know
kids that maybe have a bit of. A handicap and

(48:32):
even we got to get the wheelchair unto. The boat,
my goodness that's the best feeling ever to see that
kids light up in that big style in the states and.

first yeah that's.

Speaker 2 (51:24):

Speaker 4 (51:55):
Well at least at least, they're uh at least are

Radio show welcome back seven thirty six here At The iHeart.

(53:58):
Media empire oh that's. Too funny so the comments on
the Always, good facebook always, gold, Interesting interesting and for,
Those Wondering Tam van hubbard waded, in said there are
such thing as.

Speaker 4 (54:14):
Resident kingfish i've got him In late. June before i've
never caught him, this Late but i've caught him In late.
June before we catch kingfish year.

Speaker 2 (54:22):
Round, offshore Okay but i've always attributed that to. Just
offshore you have those different temperature gradients, right right and
they are. Pelagic species they're falling the temperature and they're falling.
The bait so if we got the, right temp we got,
the bait we'll see. The kingfish we got a kingfish this,
past week pretty. Nice One so i've always attributed that
to but, near shore in around the Beach Off anna

(54:45):
maria seems crazy unless.

Speaker 4 (54:48):
He's late June and Boca grand we used to catch
him on a few SPOTS when i was if the
bike would get slow for a couple of days down
there tarp. AND fishing i had some, snapper rocks some stuff.
Real close you could break it up for your customers a,
little bit go do, something different grab some shrimp in,
the morning, you know the tackles up and just head.
Out there and THEN when i was, DOING that i

(55:10):
would always float a big pinfish out under, a cork,
you know just throw something way out behind the boat
and just let it sit out there and. Never, know
yeah one season we ended up with a couple of
nice kingfish on the, SAME day, i mean some. Big
KINGS so i, was like Really weird. June thing it's fishing. Man,
fishing no it's you. Really don't that's kind of the

(55:32):
cool thing. About, it so, you know back to a
little bit about my trip to The Beautiful.

Speaker 2 (55:39):
Florida.

Speaker 4 (55:39):
Keys again we Stayed At Hawk's, cave resort which. Was
fantastic the whole trip kind of got set Up By.
Rich Tudor Captain, rich tudor who Is With saltwater experience
and other show that's going into, season twenty Just Like.
Real Animals and Rich And tom rowland had been friends
of mine. For Years so rich had reached out to me, And,

(56:00):
said hey My son reid. Is guiding would you like
to come down here and, you know we'll get to
a couple of rooms At The hawk's k and you
know we'll provide a camera boat and reads pretty good
in the, back country, you know do you want to?
Do that and of course. No, BRAINER well I mean
i'll do it. For you i'll take one for. The,
team yeah if you really need, ME too I guess

(56:22):
i could. Do it really a unique fishery, down there
and to see, a kid nineteen year Old Cap'n, Red
tutor i'm so dialed into exactly what was going on.
DOWN there, i mean it was really. SOMETHING else I
mean i've seen a lot, of guys, You Know Captain
ben alderman and some you Know cap mozzie FISHER guys

(56:44):
i fish with a lot who are just ridiculously dialed into.
THEIR Estuary, i mean those are the ones that amaze
me that are just, you know they should, be here
they should, be there and you go there and they're.
Always there.

Speaker 2 (56:58):
It's. Just ridiculous so when you film shows on your on,
your skiff on that, ko skiff do you have to
like choose nineteen year old captains just because of the
whole weight.

Speaker 4 (57:11):
Distribution, THING oh i actually got lucky that this. Kid's
good and it was interesting because the camera.

Speaker 2 (57:18):
Boat have another full grown human on that camera.

Speaker 4 (57:20):
With you the camera boat was a yellowfin skiff and
it didn't float as skinny as.

Speaker 2 (57:27):
We.

Speaker 4 (57:27):
Did wow, so yeah pretty interesting to see the the
the ability and and read is going to order one
because he was blown away with the ride and the
float and, all that and we were up super, super shallow.

Speaker 2 (57:42):
THAT'S all, i mean. Super shallow he, was like if
he can float? This guy, yeah right. No doubt take
two people in a full tank of, fuel too because
we were running twenty five miles. One, way wow we
were in twenty five Miles from islamorada to the what's
a full tank of fuel on a skiff? Twenty gallons twenty?

(58:03):
Five gallons that is a lot MORE than i thought it.

Speaker 4 (58:05):
Would, BE yeah i mean just and again never we
went to fill up after the first day and it
Still didn't we still didn't use the, whole tank get
like six miles to the gallon with That little yamaha seventy. On,
there yeah, it's sweet it must.

Speaker 2 (58:19):
Be nice.

Speaker 4 (58:20):
It's, great yeah. That's GREAT but i was just. Really
impressed i'll. Tell you, you know have you ever seen
any of the videos the footage of everybody catching the
goliath along the shorelines. Down there so we got to
do a little bit. OF that i got to catch
a goliath right off. The, shore yeah well right OFF
the i mean.

Speaker 2 (58:36):
We were on.

Speaker 4 (58:37):
The skiff but fishing. Little islands these islands have these
giant flats around them where it's, you know literally eight inches.
Of water but right up there along the shorelines there's,
these troughs and the little puns get, in there and you.

Speaker 2 (58:49):
Know what they get. Down there it. Was crazy During
The mangrove snapper, STOCK assessment, i figure or During The
mangrove snapper, stock assessment they were talking. About this back in.
The day they would net the, entire island run a
gillnet around that, entire island and then they'd throw bleach
bombs up into, the mangroves just these towels covered soaked,

(59:11):
in bleach and it would push the fish out of
those mangroves and into. The net it's. Pretty wild, wow yeah.
Pretty crazy doesn't sound very safe. At, all no this
was what Was that probably, the, FIFTIES sixties i don't,
know that but it was. Pretty interesting and that's what
they were talking about with these mangrove, snapper catches because
they would just basically net the whole.

Speaker 4 (59:32):
ISLAND full i will tell you that the mangrove snapper
were this. Super plentiful we caught several on, you know.
Soft plastics, that's truly that's. The, estuary, yeah yeah IT'S
really i was really blowing and we caught some really,
Good ones like we caught some twelve thirteen inch mangoes.
UP there i, was, like wow and again. WE'RE throwing
i was throwing a, mirrorlure provoker a five. Inch provoker

(59:54):
the keys.

Speaker 2 (59:55):
Are a place where you can fish off a dock
for twelve hours straight and have a blast catch multiple
species at at. Hawks, K luckily i had a three
and a five year old, with me right because you're
not really supposed to fish, Over there but no one
said Anything because i've got two kids. With me, but
dude we had. A blast it started with the speaky
rig catch a, little, dog Snappers, School masters, muttons lanes

(01:00:16):
and then they got bigger and then all of a
sudden sharks. Came in then we caught like a four.
Foot barracuda it was a ton.

Speaker 4 (01:00:23):
Of, fun, yeah yeah we caught some little barracouta can
we go?

Speaker 5 (01:00:26):
To?

Speaker 2 (01:00:26):
Dinner please can you stop? One? More yeah we got
to catch. One.

Speaker 4 (01:00:32):
More, yeah yeah it's a it's a really. Unique place
and obviously the, you know being with a kid so
dialed in, like that, you know he would literally would,
Be like, i'm like so you know where? To next, he,
said well we're gonna go fish. Out island that island's
got about five tarpin. On it i'm. Like what, he,
goes yeah there's there's five residents. Over there and we

(01:00:54):
would get on the island and he'd, be like we'll,
start here but they're gonna be that they're normally on
this corner and you'd get up there and where. THEY
were i was, just, like dude is. Dialed in. That's,
Awesome yeah and he, was, like listen we're a. Little
early the tide's not going. Out yet when it's, tide
dumps they're going. To feed i've, seen them we. Saw
him you know. They're here so just wait till this.

(01:01:15):
Tide turns, sure enough soon as the tide, goes, out
boo he's. CATCHING tarp i WAS just i was just
blown away being over there in, flamingo, tailing redfish schools of,
black drums schools of, sheep head lots, of sharks lots.
Of stingrays, beautiful. FISHERY man, i mean if you love
to shallow, WATER fish, i mean that's just about as

(01:01:37):
good as. IT gets, i mean there was something to
see the, Entire time like you were just looking across
the flat on the.

Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
Outgoing tide and it goes back to what we talked.
About earlier in, my opinion it's there's different Parts of
florida and should visit all. Of, them yeah switch. It
up if you're looking to switch, things up you go fishing,
a lot going down To, the keys even fishing from
the bridge In. The keys.

Speaker 4 (01:01:57):
It's, awesome yeah there was a lot of people doing
That driving you're obviously on a lot of bridges. Down
there you haven't been playing. A trip i say it every.
SINGLE time i usually Do the keys at least every,
other season, you know to try to mix it up
and keep, it fresh because it's real easy to just
go To the keys all. The time it's an easy
drive and you just want to, go there and there's

(01:02:18):
so much to do offshore. And inshore but every SINGLE
time i, DO it i literally get on that long
stretch kind Of from Homestead To, key LARGO and i it's.
So beautiful every SINGLE time i, DO that i say,
TO myself i can't Believe that i'm not here every
season because it's such a. Beautiful place. IT is, i

(01:02:38):
mean it really is and resilient at. THAT place I
Mean hurricane keys, BUTT whooping i mean.

Speaker 2 (01:02:44):
Just FIRE. Hurricane, covid yeah they.

Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
Have been through the ringer and it's just it's. It's
popping there's there's fresh you know looking businesses. And restaurants
it's just a it's just a. Unique place it really
is so. Good, stuff yeah it was, a good, cool
week great way to open season Twenty For REAL. Animals
tv those shows won't Air until april twenty, twenty Six good,

(01:03:09):
Lord willing, but yeah. It was it was a cool
way to start a jumping micro puns in the. BACK
country i.

Speaker 2 (01:03:16):
Like that what's one of your. Favorite episodes can you
pick out a favorite twenty SEASONS. Of tv that's a, great,
question dude what's one of? Your favorites something that sticks out?
To you maybe not your favorite's a what's a memory
that sticks out? TO you i.

Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
Don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
That's tough i've been putting them on. The, spot yeah that.

Speaker 4 (01:03:34):
Was tough The one i've thought about the most, here
LATELY and I think i don't know if it would
be my, favorite ever but it's One that i've thought
about the most here lately because of the. Tarpain thing
the very FIRST show, I shot so the show was
ten years With news. Channel eight BILLY and i did

(01:03:55):
the first, seven together AND then i did three over There,
without billy AND then i took it Away From news
channel eight just because they were just a pain in.
The bud anybody that's had to work with Big corporate,
american os it just gets tough to, you know get
couldn't get budgeting for a, you know polarized lens for
the camera because it was four hundred dollars and nobody'd
cough up, the money. You know so the very FIRST

(01:04:20):
show i got, to FILM when i took the show
out on, my own so it would have been, season eleven.
EPISODE one i fished Down In charlotte Harbor, with god what's,
His Name, rhett morris and we did he chummed some

(01:04:40):
shorelines and we, caught, snook redfish and trout with. Mirror
lures it all, chummed up and Then Pitched little john's
in there and caught a bunch of and he looked
at his watch and, he's like. It's time i'm like
time for what. HE said i found about an acre
of twenty pound tarpin out in the Middle Of charlotte.
Harbor yesterday let's go see if. They're there, i'm, like
yeah let's go. Do that and we got out there

(01:05:02):
with a whole livewell full of pilchards and found. These
fish it literally the whole harbor just, glassed out and
we literally had an acre of these little poons just.
Rolling everywhere, that's crazy. It was and and so THE
team i had at the time is not the same
team that films for.

Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Me now.

Speaker 4 (01:05:22):
They were just like giggle snorting because we had all
this epic footage and they just kept looking, at, me,
going dude this is going to. Be unbelievable like we
have you know these fish jumping over.

Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
The bows of this prior to all you, HAVE drones i.

Speaker 4 (01:05:39):
Don't think we had a drone. For that it might
have been just a little before the. DRONE craze i
don't think we had the drones for that because that
would have been. Epic, footage yeah just them rolling those
little poons rolling around on drone would have. Been cool
but that one sticks out to me just and maybe.
It was some of it might have been just, you
know the the anxiety of the launch and taking things
out on, your own and, you know you had the

(01:06:01):
Blanket Of news, channel eight the great camera guys and
the talent in that building that got, us started and
then taking it out on your own and being able
to see that you could do it and put together
some epic footage and some cool shows was.

Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
Pretty cool so forging out on your own was the. Big,
memory yeah probably it. Makes, SENSE yeah i mean it
was a, big step pretty.

Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
Nerve, wracking yeah you know you've been doing it with
somebody else taking care paying all the bills for.

Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
A while that. Was NICE so i, Got THIS yeah
i could. Do this. That's.

Speaker 4 (01:06:31):
Cool, yeah actually, the guys the camera Guys At news.
CHANNEL eight a couple of them talked me, into it ALONG.

Speaker 7 (01:06:37):
WITH.

Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
C a richardson and some other people in, the industry
SO that i could do it on. My OWN so
i almost quit, doing it almost shut, it down and they, were, like,
NO man i think you ought to keep. Doing it
so that kind of pushed me to keep. Doing it
so there. You, go, yeah man the blessings of. Good
friends so hopefully we've entertained people for, you know the last,
nine years and hopefully we can keep it going a.
Little longer there, you go see.

Speaker 2 (01:06:59):
What happens.

but good People At sant kudo. Lodge were wise they
didn't want me playing.

Speaker 7 (01:07:53):
With.

Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
The CROCODILES yeah well. I HAD intended what i had
intended to do was to take the flag and kind
of slap it on the water and. Feed the crocodile
but apparently that. Was frowned upon they wanted you to keep.
BOTH your arms i just wanted to see the croc
it take something out. OF my hand i thought it.
Would be cool It was a it was a big
ma he he would. HAVE stayed away i think it would.

(01:08:15):
HAVE been fine i.

Speaker 4 (01:08:16):

we went to break sent, me down memory laying a
little bit on, just you know all the radio episodes

little time yeah twenty three years You've, been with iHeart

even know and, PEOPLE are like i can't believe he's.

Speaker 2 (01:09:07):
Still on. There it's terrible we're still listening. To that, guy.
It's brutal, brutal. That's, cool man yeah so. WE had
asked i had asked on the break where his, favorite
destination was And He said costa rica, was up there
but the Early trips to louisiana. Was up there those
are pretty. SPECIAL for sure I Think the new york
