When the on air Mike goes off, the talk talk begins. It's Talk
Talk with Martha Quinn around the world. Didn't I yeah, yeah, I
can't find my baby. I don'tknow. No, I don't know why
Saan telling no Way jumped in witha song. We have a lot of

(00:24):
podcasts on the iHeart radio app. We've got Jay Shetty's got a podcast.
Everybody has podcasts on the ihurt radioapp, but no one has a podcast
where every week there is a newcustom theme song. And I do think
that is a very special about TalkTalk with Martha Quinn. I think we
should give ourselves a nice friend forplause here. Yeah, welcome to episode

(00:49):
number two hundred and seven. Thankyou Karina of Alaskaz of Talk Talk with
Martha Quinn. This is when meand Karina and Christy, the three of
us, we call ourselves Las traceamigas we get together and chat and invite
you to join us. Do you, ladies, remember what I used to
refer to us as Alvin and thechipmunks. Don't know, I don't know

(01:15):
who's Alvin? Who's the chipmunks inthat situation? No comment, but what
I used to always say and Iwas thinking about this quite fondly the other
day and thinking I got to brushthis off and bring it back out.
I used to always say, Oh, we're like a basket full of kittens.
Each one of us is different, but one is cuter than the next.
Oh that is sweet. It's true, though, don't you think I

(01:38):
like that? Thank you, MarthaQuinn. Well, thank you Christy James.
And what we're going to talk aboutin honor of Karina taking a massive
vacation and leaving us is we thoughtwe would talk about the farthest places we've
ever been from home. So Karina, why don't you fill us in on
your upcoming trip? All right,Well, the big trip I'm planning is
I'm going with my parents to acouple places in Europe. And I'm excited

(02:06):
and nervous at the same time, just because it's a whole new country.
I've never been to Europe. Thefarthest I've ever gone is London, but
there's not a language barrier. Iguess there's not too much of a language
barrier in Europe. But yeah,So we're going to Rome, Lawrence,
Venice, Paris compete in the Olympics, and then and the trip in Spain,

(02:28):
in Barcelona. So this is ahuge trip for me and my parents.
So is it going to be justthe three of you? Yeah,
it's just the three of us.My sisters aren't able to make it,
so just us three. It's beenon my parents's bucket list for a long
time to go to Europe and thisis it. It's finally happening. Oh
my goodness, that is so exciting. And how bonding for the three of

(02:52):
you, I know, and howpatients I'm gonna go, I know,
going to be a test of yourpatients. A man. You know,
my parents are of a certain age. My mom's a little chill she she's
a little you know, laid backsometimes. But my dad, on the
other hand, you know, he'swhat seventy four, so sometimes he can
be a little bit stubborn and wantthings his way and everything relies on me

(03:16):
to get everything done. So butI'm really excited. I'm excited to go
on this journey and this trip withthem. I think it'll be really nice.
Who planned out the whole itinerary?Well, my cousins. I've actually
had a couple of people help me. So a couple of my cousins who've
been to Europe. I asked friends, I asked Christy, who helped me
as well. But yeah, I'vekind of just tookn a bunch of different

(03:38):
inputs from people who have been toEurope, and even our boss, Little
Ricky was like, hey, youneed to go to Venice, Like make
sure you go to Venice. Sowe added Venice to the itinerary. Well,
I've been to the Venetian in LasVegas, so I feel like I
can cross Venice off my list totally, totally. You've even got in a

(03:59):
gondola, right. I didn't goon one, but I saw them,
so I feel like for me,that's taken care of. So Christy,
you and the Navy you served inItaly, so you are very familiarre with
them with Italy. But I'm gonnaguess that's not the farthest that you've ever
been from home. No, Idon't think so. I think if you're

(04:20):
looking at a map of the world, I'm bringing one up right now.
Let's see what's the farthest I've beenfrom home, which is the Bay Area.
I would probably have to say itcould be Australia or it could also
be Bali because those were pretty far. Where's Bali located in Indonesia, which
is kind of between India and Australia. So I would probably say that,

(04:46):
m Yeah, Australia would be thefarthest, followed by Bali. Now I'm
trying to remember this about Australia. When did you go to Australia? I
went last time before I went toBali. Okay, that hasn't helped me,
Like, yeah, September, excuseme about September of twenty twenty three.

(05:09):
Were you there for a few days, Christy. No, I was
just there for my layover, soit was I don't remember her talking about
the Sydney Opera House everything like that. We landed on the plane and yeah,
I sat there. No, Iwent to that airport. Let me
tell you that airport is a shoppingmall. It is large. Yes,

(05:30):
I had time to leave. Iwas gonna leave, but then, you
know, I was still kind ofrecovering from my accident, so I didn't
want to go too crazy. Butyeah, so I would say Bali.
If you don't count Sydney Australia thethen Bali's probably the farthest. I'm looking
at the map trying to find Tahitifrom Christy. From San Francisco to Bali.

(05:51):
How long is the flight? Probablya day cause it's like twenty It
could be anywhere from nineteen to twentysix hours, depending on where you go
through. And how did you handlethat? Oh, it's nice. It
was a great flight. Watched someTV, ate some delicious food. It
was fun. You know. Ilike flying. One of those people who

(06:13):
really likes flying. I like goingto the airport and doing the security and
you know, going to lounge andhanging out, seeing everybody wondering where they're
going, looking out the plane window. Flying and traveling gives a lot of
people anxiety, but I love it. Yeah, anxiety and looking at me.

(06:34):
Oh man, Well, I wouldsay the farthest that I've ever been
from home is not far from Australia. My family and I took a trip
to New Zealand a couple of yearsback, and the craziest, craziest thing
happened. So we're in this hotel. We were in Queenstown and so the
hotels are kind of smaller like itwas sort of a bungalow ish hotel,

(06:58):
but really nice up in the hills. It was really beautiful and something happened
where my husband had to go upthe hill to the main bung below where
the reception area was, and Iwas waiting in our room down below,
just waiting there. The door wasopen and I went into the bathroom.
I don't know what I was doing, washing something in the sink or something
like that where the water was running, and I heard just a little like

(07:21):
popcorny sound, just a little likepopcorn sound, and I went out to
see what it was and I didn'tsee anything. I was thinking maybe my
husband had walked into the room andcarrying a glass of ice water or something
like that. It wasn't any kindof crazy sound. And I heard it

(07:44):
again, and it seemed to becoming from behind the curtains. Oh what
do you think about? I'm thinkingit's some sort of animal. I don't
know what kind of animals are reallyin New Zealand. It wasn't an animal.
It was not an animal, butthat's what I was thinking. I
was thinking, maybe a bird hitthe window. It's a big, massive
plate glass window. I pulled achair away from the curtain. I opened

(08:09):
the curtain. The whole window wasshattered. Oh wow, entire thing.
And I'm just standing there like, what did I do? God, Oh
my god, what do I do? Now? Do I close the curtain

(08:31):
and just like not say anything. And when Jordan came in, I said,
oh my god, look, Imean, this was a full floor
to ceiling like took up the wholewall, plate glass window, And he
goes, what did you do?What did you do? And I'm like,

(08:52):
I didn't do anything. I swearI was in the other room.
I was in the other room.I didn't do anything. And so had
to tell the hotel. We hadto have them come down and look.
And of course everybody's looking at mebecause I was the only one in the
room and I had moved the chairand they're like, you know, thinking
I must have like thrown the chairagainst the window or something. And I

(09:15):
could not relax like the whole restof the vacation because I was like,
oh, oh my gosh, theyfully think I busted that window. I
feel so terrible. And I wassaying to Jordan, do you think we
should offer to pay for it?And he's going, no, you didn't
do anything. Did you do anything? I'm like, no, I swear,

(09:37):
And to this moment, I swearon my dog Bueller's life. I
didn't touch that window. I don'tknow what happened to I don't know if
you know it was a heat changeof temperature change, or if you know.
I don't want to throw anybody underthe bus, but maybe you know
one of the housekeepers was vacuuming andwhacked into the window. But I know

(10:01):
that I didn't. And even ifyou whacked into the window with a vacuum,
you would think it would have asingle impact hit, not that the
whole entire glass would shatter. No, that sounds like heat or some sort
of temperature issue. Okay, Christy, I'm going to give you the phone
number of the hotel. Okay, you could call them, because believe me,

(10:22):
believe me, they still remember,Martha. What did they say to
you? What did the hotels say? I think they tried to be as
nice as they could. They gaveus another room. It wasn't as nice,
but they gave us another room. And we're like, of course,
we understand. Of course, maybesomeone before you did it. And then

(10:43):
no, because we'd had the curtainsopen before. Oh, been there for
a couple of days. Oh,it's such a bad and you guys,
you know me. I do notlike when bad looks are looking at anything.
I do everything I can to preventthat exact scenario. Like, you

(11:09):
know, I put plastic trash bagsin the trash cans because in a lot
of hotels, I don't know whythis is, but they don't put plastic
trash can liners in the trash cans. So if you want to put your
water bottle or an apple core oranything like that in the trash can,
it's like going to like stick tothe bottom of the actual trash can.

(11:31):
So I put you know, ifI go out shopping during the day,
if I get water bottles, Itake my plastic market bag and I put
it in the trash can so thatall my trash is neat and easily removed
from the trash can. I mean, that's me in a hotel. So
I was freaking out, well amongus friends, Martha says, it's just

(11:52):
us three here. You were madbecause Jordan was taking forever in the lobby.
You grab the chair, you threwit against the heather rail. Just
you know, no one's gonna know. Just those three here are here.
You're sure it's not hot, Mikeor anything said, dang it he's where's

(12:13):
my coffee? Yes, exactly. So that was a time that I was
far away, and you know,I often don't go far from home.
So this was a whole you knowthing, this trip because I'm we're homebodies.
But we we did manage to go. Now Christy will go to Tokyo

(12:37):
for a weekend. I'm surprised Christythat you haven't. Oh wait, you
have been to Japan. Oh yeah, I have been to Japan, but
I was just thinking BALI was alonger flight and it was longer, it
took longer to get there. Ithink I would like to visit Japan just
because they have really cool technology andstuff. Martha, how is New Zealand
when you went? How is itthere? I mean, what's the country

(12:58):
like? Yeah? Oh it was. It was so beautiful. It was
We had a great time from startto finish. We you know, I
have to say, my husband,Jordan planned out and itinerary, you know,
top to bottom, every second, every mode of transportation. He really
did an amazing job. So itwas all pretty seamless. And my daughter

(13:22):
was already down there, and beforewe were leaving, I was saying to
I as I was saying I can'tdo it. Like that flight, it
was like twenty hours. I wasgoing, I can't do it. We're
gonna have to call Annabelle. Itell her we can't go. I can't
do it, you know. Iwas very stressed about it. But once
we were there and it got rolling, then it was wonderful. Do you

(13:46):
have any anxiety, Karina, orare you just full bora ahead, like,
let's go bring it. No.I've been having anxiety about this trip
for a couple of months. I'vebeen having trouble sleeping. I'm just nervous.
I'm I know that everything will beokay. But I usually always go
to Mexico with the family, andthat's comfort because I can speak the language.

(14:07):
We know Mexico, my parents arefrom there. But this is just
completely something, completely different. SoI'm anxious. My dad is also extremely
anxious. He doesn't like to fly. He does not like to fly,
so he asks his doctor for somebills to knock him out. That's good,
Yeah, So he's going to tryto do that because he is really
anxious the moment that he gets tothe airport. So I'm just anxious,

(14:31):
but I keep telling myself everything willwork out. Because I'm nervous about getting
there, the trains, just thelanguage, where to go and all that.
I don't think you'll have an issuewith the language you speak Spanish.
A lot of people in Europe speakEnglish and Spanish and whatever native language is
to their country, So it's notgoing to be an issue. Language won't

(14:54):
be an issue. People speak English. Yeah, for the most part.
You're not going to someplace where it'sjust like no, for real, bring
it nobody. Yeah, but youknow, download Google Translate. I have
that and then offline so that wayyou have it ready to go and it
is fabulous. And yeah, Ithink you'll be fine. Yeah, it'll
be good. I think, likenow I'm about to leave, so I
feel i'm a little bit more atease. So I'm excited. It'll be

(15:18):
a good time. I cannot waitto eat and drink and like drink Italian
wine. Sure we're going to bethere Italian wine and it'll be it'll be
a good time. But yeah,Martha, like you, I'll I get
anxious. I can't wait until thereturn podcast, Karina, when you're telling
us how great it all went andall of the adventures that you had,

(15:43):
because at this point you know,we can only know what we know.
We can't know what we don't know. So that's why it seems so,
you know, unfamiliar, Like howam I going to get from the airport
to the hotel? How are wegoing to get around? How am I
going to manage those trains? Youdon't know yet, So it all seems
unfamiliar. But when you get throughit and you're looking back on it,

(16:06):
I can't wait to hear the amazingmemories that you're gonna gather with your family.
That's gonna be so beautiful and forthe rest of your life, Karina,
I promise you you will never regretit. Well, thank you,
Martha, and I can't wait tocome back to tell you and Chrissy that
I've met an Italian man, ora Spaniard, a man from Spain,

(16:27):
or a Frenchman. Because it's I'mjust putting it out there. Yeah,
I want to tell you, youknow, I'm gonna download Tinder when I
get there or whatever dating that theyare TINDERNI hey, but thank you.
Yeah, it's something I'm never gonnaI'm not going to regret, So it'll

(16:48):
be a good time. Karina. If you're in Italy and you see someone
you kind of feel like maybe specialabout. I do want to tell you
have some advice for you. Isyou know, when the moon hits your
eye, I'll take it easy likea big pizza pie. So you're gonna

(17:11):
know, like that only works forItaly, but you help herself there it
is, Christy. How far awaydid you know if not, that that's
something was coming. I could tellby the pause that you were riving up
for something, and I was like, oh, I smell corn. That
is corn cooking corny moment I couldfeel like coming, well, awesome chow

(17:41):
bungeior. No what else? Howelse do you say goodbye? I don't
know. Like I said, alot of people speak multiple languages, Spanish
definitely being one of those, sothat you could throw that into oh for

(18:07):
checking out Zi podcast today. Youhave to do it like that, Karina,
take it easy, Julia childs.Everything has to be like Julia child
right. All right, then, well, I can't wait until you return.
I'm so excited. Hopefully I kindof hope, well see, I'm
mean in this way, in away, I kind of hope you're in
a hotel room in the window, smashes so I'm not alone. But seriously,

(18:33):
I don't hope that. I don'twouldn't wish that on anybody, and
that won't happen to you because I'vesucked that kind of bad luck out of
the three of us, so that'snot gonna happen anymore. Thanks for taking
one for the team, Martha Quinn. You are well, good friend,
you are welcome. All right then, well until the next episode when we
meet again. I'm Martha Quinn.Christie Alaskaz, oh sweet monsieur ETI
