Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rick Blue ten ten XL there in Jacksonville. You can
listen to him every single day there on at ten
ten am, but also ninety two to five FM Jaguars
flagship there and also too He's a guy that well,
if you ask him a golf question, where the best
courses around there, he can probably point you in the
right direction.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Rick, appreciate it, buddy.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
You've been talking with Jacks fans all week and you guys,
of course, have been paying attention to what's happening here.
As I mentioned, No CJ. Stroud, a bunch of other
guys on the injury report yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
How are Jacks fans looking at this game?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Is this a massive disappointment if you don't go to
Houston take care of business against such a short handed team.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Perhaps, but you know, I think they're realistic. They haven't
swept the series against Houston since twenty seventeen, so you know,
it's been a bit and they've always struggled there. Albeit
they've won I think two out of the last three there,
but for the most part.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
I think I was looking at it.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yes, I want to say they're like six and thirteen
or six and twelve on the road, so They've always
struggled there. It's gonna be interesting. I mean, on the
service you look at you know, Davis Mills, Trevor Lawrence,
you would think Trevor Lawrence, but you know, it doesn't
always work out that way. As a matter of fact,
it was interesting when I saw the announcement of Stroud
(01:17):
on Twitter. The first response was by a Jaguars fan.
He said, this isn't good. Jacksonville never play as well
against backup quarterbacks, and you know that was the case
against Jake Browning week two at Cincinnati. They knocked Joe
Burrow out and you know, Browning has one of the
best games of his career. So you know the other
(01:38):
side of it is Jacksonville winning two straight down the road.
But that just doesn't happen either. Again, you have to
go back to I think two thousand and twenty two
when they did that, when Doug Peterson.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Was here in year number one.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
So our guy likes to look at trends, I like
to look at history, and that would say that this
does not favor Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
However, this the team has been pretty resilient this year.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
They know how to win ugly football games, and that
is something they haven't been able to do, you know,
the last half decade or so.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
Rick, kind of a two part question. First, can you
give us an update on Brian Thomas Junior showed up
on the injury report yesterday with the high ankle sprain.
And then they also got to remind yourself, Jacksonville recently
saw Jakobe Myers. They liked him so much they traded
for him at the deadline. What is he going to
provide for this offense? And do you expect him to
have a big time role just being with the organization
for less than a week.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Well, the good news is Egar Bennett's to wide receivers
coach and he was with him the last couple of
years in Las Vegas, and you know he'll do the
dirty work for you. That's not something that Jacksonville has really.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Got a lot out of this year.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
You know, Parker Washington does his part, but Brian Thomas
Junior has provided nothing going over the middle. Travis Hunter
before the injury, you know, a rookie, his tree not
an awful lot of.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
That type of stuff.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
So you got a new wide receiver who can you
know effectively he does not drop the ball. He you know,
last year he caught eighty seven balls. He did not
have one drop. It's it's amazing. Jacksonville leads the NFL
and drop passes, so you're gonna get that type of performance.
William Cohen yesterday talked about just how complex this offense is.
(03:26):
He runs an f which is a slot, but it's
his version of it here in Jacksonville. And you know,
it'll be interesting to see how many different routes he's
able to actually run. To me, that's a big factor
here because you know, with Thomas not practicing yesterday, he
wasn't even seen at the Miller Electric Center. We'll see
(03:49):
what the situation is coming up here on Thursday. But
right now, my guess would be Thomas doesn't go.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
You know, I've always looked at it like this.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
If you're a d MP as far as a practice,
and it follows DMP of course meaning did not practice,
and it follows leaving a football game in which you
do not return, then that's not good. And Jacksonville had
four of those players on Sunday in Las Vegas. You know,
Ezra Cleveland, I was at the game and I don't
(04:19):
know if television showed it, but he could barely get
off the field. Their starting left guard Jordan Lewis played
two snaps on defense. He went down that very first series,
and then again you look at honest, So I don't
think you know, right, I don't know, but I would
guess that it's not going to work out well for
(04:40):
Thomas Junior. So you know, Diamie Brown had a concussion.
Tim Patrick last week missed the game because of a
growing So you have the guy that just called up
from the practice squad in Austin, Trammel Parker, Washington, and
now you add Jacoby Myers. I mean, those are your
healthy wide receivers right now for the Jaguars.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Again, he's Hose into the Night on ten ten XL
ninety two to five FM there in Jacksonville. They are
the Jaguars flagship station. He is Rick Blue joining us here.
You mentioned Trevor Lawrence a little bit earlier, and it's
always interesting to get the local perspective of how fan
base views their starting quarterback.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
I mean, you know, CJ.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Stroud obviously not going to be on the field on
Saturday or on Sunday. Excuse me, but I mean a
guy that's kind of had a little bit of an
up and down last two and a half years with
the Texans, Jack fans, is is it starting to wane
in terms of belief in Trevor Lawrence or do you
feel like games like that Monday Night against the Chiefs,
That's that's one that kind of reels people back in
(05:40):
with them.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Now it has, and I think you're at a point
right now where fans have picked a side and there
are those who will, you know, stand by the fact
that during his career, they haven't been able to run
the football. Albeit it has been better this year, the
play calling has been terrible. He's had three different head
coat coaches, He's had four different play callers, and you know.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
It's it's excuse ridden.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
There are others who will just simply say they're not
going to get there with Trevor Lawrence.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
He's not consistent.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
He misses the layups, he misses the easy passes. He
was better with that last Sunday in Las Vegas. I
mean the screen game was really down, but it was
a big day at five for five to ETN you know,
as far as screens, so that was a marked improvement.
When you know Trevor Lawrence, I think what really frustrates
is that he makes mistakes and you say, why did
(06:38):
he do that? There are times where he doesn't have
self awareness football awareness. I mean, throwing an interception the
two and a half yard line Sunday in Las Vegas
cannot happen. They run a trick play, he throws it
into the end zone and double coverage, and you know,
he's got a little bit of Brick far Off in
(06:59):
him where he takes chances. He's also got a little
big Jameis Winston in him where he takes chances, and
you know, it ends up being a really bad thing.
And they've they've talked to him, they've worked with him,
they redid his footwork in the offseason. I mean, it's
not for the lack of coaching. And then on the
other side, there are times he makes plays and only
(07:19):
a couple of guys in the world can make throws
and only a couple of guys in the world can
make so it's really been.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
A mixed bag.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Consistency is the biggest issue that has to get fixed
for Trevor Lawrence if he's ever going to take his level,
you know, to.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Where we were all told it would go. When the
Jaguars drafted him five years ago.
Speaker 4 (07:39):
When you look currently at the Jaguars defense, who's been
the name that has drastically been the backbone or maybe
the unsung hero of this union over the first eight games.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Well, I may have been Jordan Lewis who went out
in that first series. I mean, Devin Lloyd was outstanding
in the first five games, but he's he's missed time
with a calf and he did work full in full
on Wednesday, So I would say the indication is that
you know he's going to come back and play this weekend.
Foyer Olukan is one of the more underrated players in
(08:09):
the NFL. He consistently leads the team in tackles and
goes well over one hundred. And you know, josh heinz
Allen got that huge contract that numbers don't support it.
But you know, with Trayvon Walker being injured the way
that he has and he's basically been on a snap
count would be cast on.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
You know, on one of his arms.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
He hasn't been as fully effective and you know he's
been playing fifteen plays eighteen plays primarily on passing downs.
But you know, those of you, the guys right there.
I think the spiritual leader would be a Looacon. You know,
the big surprise free agent Jordan Lewis has been just incredible.
And then you know, the best players on the team,
(08:54):
I would say right now are Lloyd Allen and I
healthy Trayvon. We'll see if that cast comes off by
game time Sunday.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Get you out the door on this one again, Rick
Blue ten ten Xcel ninety two five fl there in Jacksonville,
joining us here on the seven to ninety morning show.
With this Texans defense, and you know some of the
issues that you've talked about offensively with Jacksonville, what do
you think could be a something to fear with this
(09:23):
Jaguars team in terms of what this Texans defense can
do to help them win this game?
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Well, I think it's been very low scoring.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
I mean kind of like the first half of Jacksonville
Las Vegas on Sunday. You go back to Week two
that you know, it was almost unwatchable football Jacksonville and Houston.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
It was so poor until points.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Came in in the in the final thirty minutes. I mean,
Jacksonville is well aware of the fact that Houston is
a very good defensive team. You know, number one in
scoring defense, number one in total defense. I think Jacksonville
would like to be able to address the run. To me,
this looks like one of those deals where both teams
will try to run it. It'll be interesting to see
(10:07):
how much teams cheat, you know. I know Demico Ryans
did a nice job with that here in week two
by putting an extra man in the box and basically saying,
Trevor Lawrence, you go ahead and beat us. I think
that's going to be the mentality by both teams, whether
it's Lawrence or Mills, Hey, you beat us. You know
we're going to do what it takes against the run.
(10:29):
So yeah, I think it's another one of these kind
of drawn out, methodical, deliberate, you know, type of football
games that may come down to a field goal. I
think yards are going to be tough to get. I
think third down is going to be a struggle. I
think red zone, if you get there, is going to
be a struggle. I think it's going to be a
total defensive game. But you know, Jacksonville's gonna try to
(10:53):
run it.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Now.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
They had forty two carries last week. They had fifteen
first downs rushing. That's the most in the NFL this year.
This has been a terrible pass protection football team. And
you know, seventy six pressures are in their two losses.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
That is not.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
I did not missay that that's the correct number. Seventy
six pressures against the Rams and the Seahawks. So this
football team wants to run the ball. And again, I
know Houston's good against the run, so I think that's
what it's going to be. It's really fast. It's one
of those two hour football games if both teams.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Just run the ball, run the ball, run the ball.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
So I think it's going to be pretty intriguing and
looking forward to getting out there and seeing it on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Just the only thing missing is the triple option, right Rick,
that's pretty much.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Yeah, yeah, And they'll do that here. They Diami Brown
is there usually their reverse guy. They've done that three
times this year, once in the preseason on fourth to
one and it's worked. And that's part of Liam Cohen's offense.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
NFL football that could look like Service Academy football on Sunday.
According to Rick Bulou again he's on ten ten XL
nine two five there in Jacksonville. Rick, it's always great
to catch up with you, buddy, and of course say
hello to the fine folks over at Blue Crab Crab House.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
For me, oh outstanding dollar oysters. If you folks from here,
say you leave now you can get here. We'll meet tonight,
no doubt about it. Hey, thank you guys. I'll see
you over there this Sunday. Thank you.
