It is Tuesday, November fifth, started, and it's a storm
alert day too. Now.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
The polls have been opened since seven.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
They'll be open until seven tonight, but we've had some
strong storms around and it looks like the range should
be clearing.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Out around nine this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Then you'll be free to go vote now, despite Texas
leaders saying it's illegal. Federal election monitors are on their
way to Harris County and we have learned that more
than a million came out to vote early in Harris County. Now,
our sister station, News Radio seven forty KTRH, they're going
to begin election coverage tonight at seven when the polls close.

Shara and Jimmy gonna be here for as long as
they need to continue to give us the results as
they came in come in. You can download the iHeartRadio app.
It's totally free. Just search New Radio seven forty atrh
and remember today is November fifth, it's still hurricane season
until the thirtieth and Raphael is forming in the Caribbean.

(01:12):
It will become a hurricane before it enters the Gulf.
The path we still don't know, still uncertain, and whether
it impacts Texas, it can't be ruled out. So we'll
keep you keep you posted on that. Now, whether today,
like I said, we've got a storm alert morning, then
it should start clearing out around nine.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Today we only go up to seventy nine. It's great.
Right now, it's seventy four in Uptown and you're up
to date. I'm sunny.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Tell me something good brought to us by our friends
at Goodwill Houston. It's election day and this is going
to make your election day a bit easier. Now. Remember,
several counties allow you to vote at any location in
the county. Only Montgomery and Waller Counties. You need to
vote in a signed precinct, so there'll be some areas
that are more crowded than others.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
How do you find out you can?

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Harris has set up their website with all the details
on the crowds at each voting locations. You can just
check out Harris votes dot com. Real Simple producer Anthony.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Dane in a story to inspire you to do your
civic duty. There's a one hundred and one year old
Houston woman who's voted in every election since nineteen forty eight.
Her name is Mary Adkins, and she says going with
her dad to vote became a tradition that continued until
she herself was eligible to vote and for context, back
in nineteen forty eight, her first election would have been
the one with Harry Truman, that famous Dewey defeats Truman

(02:33):
headline on the newspaper. Right, and what's funny is her daughter,
Susan says they made a bit of a stir when
they went to vote.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
And everyone found out she was one hundred and one.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Mary says that voting never gets old no matter how
many times you go. So there's your motivation to get
out and do your civic duty, because if this one
hundred and one year old lady can do it, so
can you.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
That's incredible, right wow.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
And this suburb, these suburbs, I should say, the number
one and two hottest selling in our area according to
the Houston Association of Realtors, Those.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Of you in Brookshire and Waller, yep. Number one and two.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
The demand for new construction is rising, the affordability and
the amenities. Now number three is Conroe Northeast Montrose Inside
the Loop came in at number seven, and Dayton rounding
out the top ten. And we lots of listeners in
all those areas, so one of them congratulations. And we

Point one, Houston's best variety of the.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Eighties, nineties and today and our nearly impossible question This morning,
we were talking about lucky charms. Maybe if you really
want your candidate to win, you've got your lucky socks on.
That was the answer to our nearly impossible question. Or
you're a prayerful person and you just pray a lot.
But we wanted to ask you about your strategy early
voting or do you make it a big deal and

(03:57):
go out and vote on election day? And we have
got Lisa calling in from Cyprus. Now you hang out
with your little girl.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
How old is she? She's eight?

Speaker 4 (04:08):
She's a baby anymore?

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Oh, she's your little girl. Though, so what do you do.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
Do you wait for election day just to kind of
teach her about your civic duty or did you vote
early just in case you never know what election day
is going to bring.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
This is actually one of my first times that I've
gone early voting, and I actually went on a Friday,
and I realized why there was so much traffic every
day when it was crossing the street in the area.
So it was it was nice to go because it
was pretty quick and convenient, easy to find a parking spot.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Oh you never I mean, if you go to Harris
County their Harris votes dot com, they actually have this
feature on their website where you can see how crowded
each location is on election day.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yes, but with early voting, you kind of just walk in.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
There's two or three people there, walk right out, walk
right out right.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
We had quite a few people over here, so there
wasn't two or three, but the line moves very quickly.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, that it moves. Yeah, And then you get your
sticker and what's your daughter's name?

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Ava?

Speaker 1 (05:09):
Well, thank you for sharing that, Lisa, and a little
bit of your wisdom, and we certainly appreciate you listening
to Sonny and thank you for going out and voting.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
Thank you so much, and we listen to you every day.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Let's sit over to Cypress and speak with Tyler. Since
it's a rainy day. You're driving from Cyprus to m.
D Anderson and we didn't know how much rain we
were going to get on election day?

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Did you vote early just in case the weather was crazy?
Or is today you're voting day?

Speaker 4 (05:35):
I voted early?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Oh okay, Like what's your strategy? Why do you vote early?

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Well? I had a voting close to me, so I
decided to just get done. That's doesn't make you feel good,
like you just feel like you know what?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
This was a rush to me, and by golly, I'm
going to use it. Oh yes, right, do you have
any kids? I do not know.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
I'm kidless, souse.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
I was wondering, you know, if we can share kind
of our civic duty with our kids.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Do you talk to anyone about voting?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Or was this just kind of like I'm and Tyler
mode right now and I'm just gonna go do.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
It very much that I get in my civic duty done.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
Yeah, that is excellent, Tyler, will listen. You're a lucky
guy because this rain is kind of crazy. I know
it's going to taper off throughout the day, but at
least you got your voting done early. And Tyler, we're
so glad you listened to Sonny. What exactly do you
do it? M? D Anderson?

Speaker 3 (06:26):
I work in research for Oh, that's awesome, that's amazing cool.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Well, thank you for doing that, and thanks for listening.
We appreciate you

Speaker 4 (06:35):
Of course, thank you so much.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
