Speaker 1 (00:02):
Sunday ninety nine point one Houston's best variety of the
eighties nineties, and today it's feel Good Friday. I'm Dana
with producer Anthony the three Things you need to Know
to get your Friday February seventh started, well, there is
a big.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Connection to the big game on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Two of the star players apparently work out here in Houston. Yep,
Houston's Taj Khan trains two of them, the at his
Cango Congo in Rice Village, his training facility, the Kansas
City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and also the Philadelphia
Eagles cornerback Darius Slay. So there that is your Houston connection.

(00:39):
There might be another one if Mattress Mac bets the
Kansas City Chiefs are gonna win that. As we learned earlier,
he met Patrick Mahomes and Patrick said, don't ever bet
against me.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
And he's on the fence.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
So we'll see.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
We'll let you know about that as well.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
Well.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
It was just a tragic morning yesterday. Wow, this huge crash.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Apparently there was a woman she was speeding going the
wrong way on the freeway at cross timbers hit several people.
One man died. We're learning about the woman. She was
on trial, a waiting trial for drug charges in another county.
Her name Monica Valdez. Apparently she ran up to one
of the witnesses there, Lewis Gutierrez, saying please help her escape,

(01:18):
and he's like, no, you know, you just killed somebody.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, really, just just so so sad.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
And yesterday it was a record eighty three degrees. Today
we're going to go up to eighty five. Tomorrow's high
eighty six. Now the record was eighty seven set back
in twenty seventeen, so we'll see if we can get there.
Then we're gonna start cooling off Monday Tuesday, some thunderstorms
moving in. By Valentine's Day Friday, we could have another freeze. Wow.

(01:48):
So you can look at it two ways. Either your
relationship is frozen, or you're gonna be cuddling on snuggle weather.
That's snuggle weather. So there Today, like we said, we're
gonna go up to eighty three and the clouds are
going to be out here.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
It's gonna be real sunny.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Right now, it's sixty nine in Uptown and euro up
to date on sunny. Tell me something good brought to
us by our friends at Goodwill Houston. Well, last month,
Proper Rose Garden, a katie t room, announced that it
had to close after five years of being open and
delighting the community, it just couldn't go on after all

(02:25):
kinds of debts started piling up. Well, the community said
no right off the bat on their crowdsource and page.
They donated five thousand dollars because the community is loving
the unique Asian European afternoon tea sets and all the
delicious baked goods that they have. Well, the sixty thousand
dollars in debt was really tough on the owner Jang,

(02:47):
but everyone started donating stepping up. Now he's only got
eleven thousand dollars left of his debt, hoping that he
will be able to get rid of all his debt
reopen the rest, but not so fast. In the meantime,
he says, keep watching his Instagram for pop ups and
collaborations and you can follow them and it just looks

(03:09):
so delightful and refreshing.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Proper Rose Garden that's their handle for NEU.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Sir Anthony Dan, we know the power in books and
reading and later this month literacy. Now we'll be helping
to celebrate Houston Reads Day. The one day event brings
awareness to the literacy crisis in our city. We're only
twenty seven percent of our third graders can actually read
on level, and data shows illiteracy as a strong predictor
of future success in life, from employment and healthcare access,
even a person's risk for incarceration. So Houston Reads Day

(03:37):
coming up February twenty eighth, they need volunteers to help
read to fifteen thousand pre K through fifth grade students
attending thirty nine Houston Aldean and Sheldon i is D schools.
A short volunteer training and background check is required to participate,
and readers ages thirteen and up invited to participate. If
you'd like more info, just check out Literacy Now Houston
dot org.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Reading. I'm telling you it is such a gift that
we canmit true. I love it so much. Okay.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
He is a Michelin Award winning amazing chef. We're talking
about Houston chef Hugo Ortega accolades and awards, and now
he can add a viral TikTok video to his list
of awards. Chef Hugo sharing his life story on TikTok.
It's entitled My American Dream. Homeless dishwasher to award winning

(04:25):
chef all at school, left his family behind back in
nineteen eighty four. When he came here, he was a
dishwasher at Backstreet Cafe in River Oaks, and there Anthony,
he met his wife, Tracy, who.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Is the owner. Wow. Fast forward to today. He's pretty amazing.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
He's got almost twenty thousand likes on that video.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
So really cool story.

Speaker 1 (04:48):

Variety of the eighties, nineties, and Today Dana in the
Morning and producer Anthony on a feel Good Friday, one
week until Valentine's Day. Just want to throw it out

(05:08):
there so you're not scrambling at the last minute. We're
talking about feel good stories that happened to us this week.
And one of the stories I ran across a really
sweet eye Tony at us Coins, who said that I
gave him a shout out when he was twelve years
old and he was listening with his grandma, and I thought,
oh my gosh, I've been here so long, but we

(05:29):
have created some good memories for families kids listening now
having kids themselves, I just think it's it's so funny.
And we're asking you how long have you been listening?
Do you have a feel good story you want to
share with us? And we have got let's see, calling
in from I think the Spring area. Mom and twelve

(05:49):
year old Asy, Now, how long have you guys been
listening to us?

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Probably easily thirty plus years?

One here, guys, another one day now Aasy gets to
listen too, right, Mom, Yes, ma'am.

We're always so curious.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
We so we actually started listening to you guys as
little kids. But my sister went into the military, and
so she would tune in from Kuwait whenever she was traveling,
and so we would listen to you guys over the
holidays to keep in touch.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
All these such amazing I love that. I'm so glad
you shared that.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
So now now you're here, is your sister close by
or is she still in the military.

Speaker 5 (06:30):
She is still in the military. But she's in Tennessee
right now. But she's doing great.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
That is excellent. Oh, I love it.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
We were able to be a part of your family
and give you, guys such good memories with that Christmas music.

Speaker 5 (06:41):
Absolutely yes, But we also talked to y'all yesterday. I
was going to tell you, y'all gave Azy good luck
before she tried out for the pole vaulting team.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yes, and she.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Made it.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Go. Yeah, that's the feel goody congratulations, say thank you.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Oh we knew she had it. So when does track start?

Speaker 5 (07:04):
I'm pretty sure it starts. Yeah, it's pretty fast, so
they've already started rehearsals or I guess practices.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
All that is amazing. You just made our day.

Speaker 1 (07:13):

good luck asy.

is right behind us in the car. It's my son's
birthday this weekend. Could we wish him a happy birthday?
