Speaker 1 (00:01):
Now Fiona is our courageous coach and kids are getting
ready to go back to school. Fiona, I think the
topic that you want to share this morning is so
important because kids and jealousy trying to extinguish that bright
light that they might carry around. I thought this would
be really good just to encourage people. You've got that

(00:23):
bright light, don't let anyone try to dim it. How
can we do that well?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Should we start with examples of what that is? Because
you talk about kids going back to school, and I
think it does start in childhood where people feel that
they're being told, even if it's not set out loud.
There's a kind of an unwritten rule sometimes in family
is that one sibling has to shine their light and

(00:53):
one has to hide their light. I certainly felt it
him in my child that I had to hide my
light because absolutely and you know, it could because your
sibling isn't doing very well. Or it could because you
have a parent who seems to want the light for
themselves they don't like anyone else to get it.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
It could be all sorts of different things.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
It could be a kind of slightly puritanical view of like,
you know, you shouldn't celebrate your god given talents because
it's not.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
You don't boast, don't boast yet kind of thing, and
so it can go. You know, these things carry on
into adulthood.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
And then when we are doing something where we should
be shining our light, we hold ourselves back. And that
could be for example, you like, you like acting, but
you're too scared, like you can't show off. You know,
you can't. You can't go on and on the stage
and actually show what you can do. Or you know,

(01:59):
even as like as a coach, you know, it's taken
me a while to be able to put things out
on social media and things like that. And sometimes, as
Bernie Brown has has indicated, and you know, she quoted
a speech made by Theodore Roosevelt that.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
You know, when you go and do things, when you
when you're in the ring.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
As a gladiator, people criticize, and so sometimes you can
be kind of put off by that criticism and hold back.
But really it's the one who's who's in the arena
who counts. You know, they're the one doing the thing.
And of course you know there may be some something
that they are not doing perfectly, that there's there's some

(02:43):
error or whatever. But some people just love to criticize
and they'll look for the one percent of error and
then it sort of implies that you shouldn't be doing
the thing.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
When they when they come on.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Doesn't that seem to doesn't that seem to kind of
be what goes on in social media a lot, something
that we didn't have years ago. Now we put ourselves
out there, boy, and that one comment can just devastate us. Right,
we see it all.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
The time, yes exactly, But but I say, let's not
let it control us, you know some and you know
in the Bible it says when you do good, people
will attack you for it. And I really think that,
you know, you know, there's this this quote about darkness.

(03:34):
Oh sorry, light cannot be put out by darkness. It's
actually the presence of light that gets rid of darkness.
And I think there is a force of darkness that's
trying to get us to hide our light. And that
should be like fuel.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
For us, like like.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
A red a red flag to a bull. You know,
that makes me want to share more? You know, yeah, yeah,
so you think I shouldn't share my about right, you know.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
But what practical things for people of all ages can
we do when we are feeling because it's just different degrees.
Maybe we've been attacked as a child for our light
and we've we've grown stronger, thick skinned, but we don't
want to be bitter. We want to keep shining that
light in a happy, positive way. So practical techniques we

(04:28):
can use.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Well, for a start, just take small steps, you know,
you don't have to do the big scary thing. You
can just take small steps towards it. And then about
being about not letting other people affect you.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Just you know, the more we give love to.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Ourselves, the less we'll be affected by other people. And then,
of course, like our attitude towards that person, maybe we
can understand that they're coming from a place of pain.
And you know, if they if their life is about
criticizing other people, it's because they're in pain themselves. And
so just to be you know, you don't have to

(05:10):
continue a relationship with that person, but just be compassionate
to the fact that they're actually coming from a place
of pain.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Isn't that a great That is such a great way
of looking at it, because that softens your heart. Yes, yeah,
because you can get so frustrated with them and so
hurt by them that you forget, Wait a minute, why
are they even doing that? That's they've got to be
a kind of an unhappy person themselves, you know.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yes, exactly.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
And we can pray for them, and we don't have
to tell them that we're praying for them, because then
they'll say, oh, that's just passive aggressive and condescending or whatever.
But we can just pray for them and you know,
without them knowing.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
And what else.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
I think, just just know that if we are coming
from a place of love and service, it's not about
showing off. It's about, you know, how we can help
other people.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
You know, right, is my message?

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Is my message about me showing off? Or is it
about me helping other people to improve their lives?

Speaker 1 (06:18):
That is a great way of looking at it, and
that's a great lesson to teach the kids when they
come home from school and tell mom and dad, you know,
I was just being happy and they're all attacking me
for being happy. I remember that when I was a
little girl, I was always happy and you just that
one person. Why are you always smiling?

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yes, exactly the same coll Why are you always.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
Smiling like you must be? And I never even thought
about that, you know, I was just smiling.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
Yeah, well, amazing fun yeah yeah, and again, I mean,
you know, bullies they don't like it if you're happy, right,
so they bully you.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
And you know, in school it could be physical, but
in adulthood it's less likely to be physical. Well except
if you're a domestic violence kind of situation, but you know,
generally it'll be just common or you know.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Snyder remarks, that's something really good to focus on as
we get ready for back to school. Don't let anyone
extinguish that bright light. And if they try to take
a step back and kind of just think about why
they're doing it, it's not you. It's usually them, right exactly, you.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Know, and sometimes it's teachers. You know, if a child
is enthusiastic, I heard this thing the other day where
somebody said she was always when she was a child,
she was always the first to finish her homework, to
finish the task in class, so she would then help
her friends, and then she would get into trouble for

(07:52):
being disruptive. She was actually just being enthusiastic about the
work right right times. The teachers, you know, they're so
they're just trying to keep control of the class and
they don't really know what's going on with each individual.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Now that's teachers.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
That's where parents come in, you know, parents and their
wisdom to kind of decipher the situation and see what's
really going on. Is the child being disruptive or just enthusiastic?

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Right? Yes, And I want to say, you know, teachers
nowadays are doing a great job.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
You know, I think much better than when I was young.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
And obviously that you know, they work very hard and
they're dedicated to helping children.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
So absolutely, absolutely, We've got a lot of teachers who
listen to us here on Sunny and you know what,
they could use a coach, to a courageous coach. So
we're going to list all the ways that we can
get in touch with with you, Fiona. And what is
it like the very first meeting that we would have
with you? What would you what could we expect when

(08:55):
we reach out to you if we do need a
courageous coach.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
Well, the first time I whatever speak to somebody, it's
more of a chat and I'm really trying to discover,
like is this somebody I could work with? And they're
trying to discover is it somebody that they could you know,
whether I'm somebody they could work with.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
And you know, are they kind of more or less ready.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
For coaching or they completely closed off and they think
they know everything.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
You know, just you know, do we get on? Is
there a good chemistry?

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Right? So you know, I do do it like a
free discovery call that it's not there's no pressure. There's
no pressure too to sign up if it doesn't seem
like a good fit, because I don't want to work
with people where it's not a good.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Fit exactly exactly, and you and I work well. I
met Fiona, it's going on almost six months now, because
you're such a bright light in my life helping me
work through some issues with such a positive, happy spin
as opposed to being I don't want to grow bitter
and negative about things. And you've really kind of shined

(09:57):
a light on other ways of doing things that might
have been a habit for me that you've helped me
get out of these bad habits and it's been wonderful.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
It's been wonderful for me too, great experience working with
you because you are so kind of self aware and
keen to improve and so happy and joyful and so
it's you know, it's a breefe for me to to
experience that.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
I mean, isn't that the key? Don't We want to
get better with life. We want to expand our world,
not make it smaller as we grow older. And it
just gives you so much energy and so much joy.
But you just need techniques to help you do that,
and that's where Fiona has been such a great help.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, but not everybody is ready for that, right. Some
people are clinging to their old stories because it feels safer.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Well, I say, get out of the safety zone and
let's have some joy in our lives. And Fiona, you're
always such a delight. I love speaking with you on
our feel good Fridays and I hope you come back
and talk with this again next week. I will think
that light shining.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Okay, Thanks Dana

Speaker 1 (11:06):
Thanks love, take care, Bye bye
