Bellarmine University basketball is moving back on campus. Men's basketball coach Scott Davenport joins Tony Cruise to talk about why.

positive man I know. His name is Coach Scott David

Okay, right back home on campus, coach. Yeah, yeah, that
is great. What came into being here? Why the move back?
And I think it's a great move To be honest with.

You, Well, first of all, cold, let's let's it's a objective,
measured business.

We did win.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
We did win ninety seven of the last one hundred
and knights, all in seventy two in a row.

So I mean not that we're counting, Okay, so that works.

In July the fifth of twenty twenty, that is the
first summer we are transitioning from Division two to Division one.
Doctor and missus Lynn build us that beautiful locker room.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
We're ready to go.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
We had opened it up in the fall of nineteen
for that last season, and that first meeting is held
in the parking lot of Nightshall in the front parking lot.
They have to stand next to their car. I tell
them where to go get tested. I tell them where
to come back into quarantine. The Health apartment. Following their guidelines,

we're going to allow us to have three hundred and
twenty eight people in Knights All at games. No students
in that student section because it was pleachers, no social distancing. Now,
the three hundred and twenty eight where were going to
be allowed included every person in the building, players, officials, manager, stack, crewise, radio, TV,
the guy in the concession stand, everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
So we had a two hundred and fifty fans.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Doctor Lynn, mister David Beck of the Kentucky Fair or
excuse me, the Kentucky Expo Center said you know, let's
make the let's move to Knights Hall an alumnus Tim Horrigan,
who's done very well. They stand into the floor down
and made it a Knight's of Freedom all court. Okay,
let's go that first year we get to the Conference

Tournament regular season championship, last Saturday of the year. That's
the COVID year. The next year we win the conference
tournament championship. And two years ago, well, student involvement has decreased.
It's so easy. They can watch it. They got used
to it. They can just put up their device and

watch it. Well, let's get them involved. So number one.
Let's get back in Knights Hall. They walk across that
parking lot right from the dining facilities and boom, they're
in Knights Hall. Let's play at six point thirty. Let's
involve the community. We know we have great. Look, let's
we're all big.

We're really real. Out of here.

We have all of Barstown Road, we have Current's Corner,
we have Shenanigans, we have Kalin's, the new Derby City Pizza,
which is the old Dundee tavert. No, this is this,
this needed to be done. Scott called me before and
was talking to me about it's more intimate.

Yes it is. I love it. It is more intimate.

It's more participant friendly. Freedom all was Nobody knows freedom.

I was able, so lucky to coach a state championship
in there, you know, coach at the University of Louisville
and there, I mean the Colonels. I go so far back,
but in this day and age, to adapt with the
fans and number one again, put these students first.

Been through, which I mentioned since twenty They deserve Every
night should be a night, seventies night.

And you know you and I have talked off to
you about my son being at Xavier, and I'm just
marveled at the fact that you literally walk out his
front door of his dorm and you are inside this
in Toss Center. Yes, it's great. I mean, that is
just and he has grown to love that. I mean,
it's so to have you guys back on campus where
your your kids can just just walk from their dorm

over tonight's hall. It just warms my heart on every level.

What's coming up here with the Breakfast Friday.

The breakfast is a joint venture for the Night. It's
for the Night Athletic Association, a support group. It will
feature both the women's and men's basketball program.

There'll be a Q and A. I think I'm gonna
let our players set it up and do the Q
and A. They'd be better than them asking each other.
That'd be great to believe me. Oh, no question, Well,
why is this? It's a commercial for their life.

There's gonna be people there that are great networking opportunities.

This is what college should be about. So we are excited.

You know, everybody asked me ten times, Dady, how's your
team going to be. I'm gonna say this, We've got
sixteen guys who want to be there in this day
and age.
