Speaker 1 (00:01):
We've been seeing the started basketball season with the interviews
with the coaches, and we got one a great winter
right here. Good morning to you, Scotty Davenport.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
But basketball never stops, so you don't have to start
a yet.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
But it doesn't basketball basketball Freak's gotta Davenport, you.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Know what, Tony, And this is the change. People don't realize.
Our players reported.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Back to campus for our eight weeks in the summer
on June the seventh.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
It's all the time.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well take August second, back on August twentieth, and then
here we.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Are first and two coach. Before we get going, I
did want to say congratulations. By the way, I saw
the news yesterday Ben Johnson made the preseason all a
Sun team. That's pretty big news for him, a big
deal for him.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
It's incredible. It's been a phenomenal journey.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Had the big picture been red shirted as mister basketball
as a freshman, and the reason he's a member of
the five year NBA program at development and I would rather,
you know, we're all parents. I would rather for Bellerman
to pay for my NBA than myself. He did an
internship throughout He's done two internships, so I mean again

(01:23):
I use the phrase he's using basketball. It will never
be accused of using him.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah, he's such a special kid. That just warmed my
heart when I saw that coach. I mean, come out
of least.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
If the three of us played golf, If the three
of us played golf and we swang the golf club,
fundamentally perfect.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Where should the shot go straight? Well, wherever you wanted
long and straight? Right?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, Well, if I shot basketball like Ben Johnson, I
should make every.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
Shot, no pressure, no pressure for the coach. Well, you know, coach, I'm.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
The Condamentally it's fundamentally the way you should shoot a basketball.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Oh really, but how does that happen?

Speaker 2 (02:05):
It's our after our day after day in that gym.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
I mean, this didn't just happen.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
He didn't become all preseason a son yesterday, right. No,
this was as a student at Lexington Catholic. I mean
this went on. So he deserves so much credit and
he has proved it. I mean it's happening every day
on that course.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
What the courage did Seth and his brother, there's no question.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
But that's that's why it warmed my heart when I
saw that coach and by the way if I get
to your games. I wanted some all access because I
saw you took on a new player from my hometown.
We have two Catholic high schools in my hometown, and yes,
and Jack Kearrasinski is from Catholic Central and he's when
I saw he was, I want to get with him
and talk about him and what he did because my

(02:52):
good buddy from high school teachers at the other Catholic
high school, West Catholic, so they were rivals. So goodness,
see you're reaching out in my hometown. Coach, thank you.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
And he can play. Yeah, he can play. Now.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
He's under he's fighting a little bit of a back
issue right now, and we're being very very conservative with that.
He's in tremendous hands. But he can play. Jack Karasinsky's
a player, There is no doubt.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
You know. The recruiting story, Well, well we'll.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Sit down one day and talk about it because it's
it's phenomenal.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
But we are thrilled to having Yeah, his his grandfather,
by the way, playing in Western Michigan, play two seasons
with the Washington Redskins.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
So he comes from an athletic family.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Well, yes, yes, After a ridiculous uh, not being able
to participate in the NCAA tournament and all this other stuff.
You are finally in your first year a full Division
one member, which to me you always were. You're either
in Division one or not. But that's that. Those are
by gone. It's time to you know, take on the

(03:51):
a shunt and see what's going on. And you're good.
You've got a good happy hour thing going on today.
Tell us about it.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
What we did at we started this is out rob.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
We went back and forth, back and forth, back and
forth about a support group that directly impacts the players.
In other words, that they're operating our operating expenses, their.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Gear, the way we eat, the way we're able to travel.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
It is directly impactful to them.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
And we didn't know what to call it. Like if
I say it's the nightclub.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
And then and Scott says to Tammy, I'm going out
to the nightclub. That's right, and then COVID hit.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Then we couldn't do that at all.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
So now now then then we're back and what that
what this again? This donation impacts the players, has nothing
to do with the staff. I mean this in BacT,
these players, you get, you get basketball authentic swag, the
same thing that coach are the players where but you
get all access be it practice, pregame, locker room. We

(05:06):
have a social area for this group to beat. They're
in the locker room, they watch warm ups and they
they impact these young people and then but they're but
what really happens.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
This is a commercial for their life.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
So today, let's say we have sixty to seventy five
of these incredible supporters and we encourage them to bring friends,
bring friends. Well, these are potential internships. Internships lead to
potential jobs. Everybody talks about n al right in al. Yes,
it's a real thing. But an internship is what that's

(05:44):
a future you may get. You may launch a career
that ends up forty forty five years from now. That's
that's paying them. That is paying them, right, but that's
real pay because that's back in on a career. We
had six grade internships last summer. You know's go with
the Kerstorfers, cooking Reeves with with Superior Van, I mean

(06:07):
Norton Healthcare, Uh, Morgan Stanley with wil Wolford, Tom Peroni, we.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Robbie Hommel human How would.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
You if you have an internship with Hu man, that'd
be great.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
These are these are these are real, These aren't just temporary. Okay,
I'm I'm paying you right now for what you do.
Now do I want to pay them? Help them only
to the level of their ability to earn it. Right,
If a healthcare facility wants to help us, then I

(06:41):
want our players to go and help them at assisted
living facility, watch watch basketball with the with the the patients,
watch basketball with them, spend time with them.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Now, if that.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Player doesn't want to do that, no, and I would never.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Send someone by themselves. I'm going to send them with
with a teammate that an hour an hour week. What
if it's two hours a week.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
And it's not an hour, it's not an hour coach
where you're stuffing envelopes and some in office either.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
No, you're impacting people, That's what I'm saying. That's that's awesome, right.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
If that person doesn't want to do it, that's okay, Right,
But then you're not you're not getting compensated. But think
of this, and I learned this on every story I
could tell and not it'd be impossible not to get emotional.
My mother was it was not imminent that she was
going to pass, but it was my anniversary, and coach

(07:34):
Fatina found out it was my anniversary. But my sister
and I were taking turns staying with her, and he
went crazy and he says, you get Russ and Doug
over there tonight. You get Russ and Doug over there
tonight to spend time with her, because how a Russ
and Doug will learn to take care of you and Sharon,
you are going to get older. Wow, he was crazy.

(07:54):
He was screaming at me. I called Russell Dug. I
told Sharon, it's the anniversary. We're going to go. She goes, well,
you're standing at your mother's. Tonight's your turn. I said, no,
Russ and Hugger and to stay two hours. We're going
to dinner. We went to pat stagehouse. Pat comes and
sits with us, orders us a dessert and comes back
to me and said, happy anniversary. And by the way,
this meal's comp because coach Patino's already paid it.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Oh my gosh, that's right, that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
But what was it? He wanted me to teach Russ
and Doug. Yeah, yeah, you want to teach these players?

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Well, so anyway, in a time, how's it worked tonight
four thirty.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
It's a four thirty happy hour practice.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
We will have a presentation.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Joe Reeves of Argue Financial and our own Dell Romans
will present. They will encourage people, They will encourage people
to get involved and and this is this will be
a great practice. We'll have individual instructure with our small
groups starting seven forty five this morning, and our players
have class all day and practices at four thirty four.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
Practice the whole deal, all right, four thirty six nights, Hall,
y'all come, and it's gonna be a great day to
Scotti d one of the best coaches you're ever going
to meet and coach.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
Before we let you go, I did want to ask you.
You got a scrimmage coming up two weeks from Tuesday
against Center Colleges or an exhibition.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Is that gonna be open to folks? It is on
a limited basis. It's got student Day. I got what
it's going to be about the Bellvmint students. We're having
eleven o'clock on a Tuesday. That's our free period.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
We're gonna fill it with Bellarmint students to kick off
the season. We do have some other local schools, both
public and privates that are coming.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
We want to fill. We want them to see and say,
okay man, this colleague is a great day. So it's
not just it is school day, but yes, there are
ability for people to come.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
Yes, that's gotta fly, Scottie, good luck in the a sun.
Look forward to seeing you all out there at Knights Hall.
It's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Appreciate your time, Appreciate you guys running.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
That's one of the great ones, great people and he
actually coaches college basketball the way and it was meant
to be. We'll get to a break, Scotty.
