Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning, Kentucky, Anda, Welcome in to Kentucky and this
morning news with Nick Coffee here on News Radio eight
forty whas five. Here we go, right on time. We
are three two one. Now it's five oh six. I
was gonna say five oh five, but because of there
being a slight delay for those listening on radio, and
a big delay actually if you're streaming, I mean not

(00:21):
like crazy, but a much bigger delay than if you're
just listening on radio. Regardless, it is now five oh six.
We're ready to get this day started. Tuesday, June the seventeenth.
The full crew is here, Scott Fitzgerald, We've got John
Alden running the operation, and of course John Shannon back
in the saddle after being out yesterday. So we're here
and we're ready to rock and roll. Do you want

(00:41):
to let you guys know coming up in a long time.
In fact, it'll be at the very end of the
show eight forty five. Mayor Greenberg gonna be with us
to share some special news that I think if you're
a Louisville fan, I would imagine this would be something
that excites you. But we'll see you know, you guys
can have your own you know, you all will make
of this whatever you will, and that's cool. But I'm

(01:03):
really excited for Mary Greenberg to come on with us,
and again it'll be at eight forty five. You'll hear
me mention that throughout the show, just to make sure
people are aware. I know Mayor Greenberg is excited about
sharing this news with everybody, so again we'll get you
set for that. Also, Rory O'Neal going to join us
at five forty five, and once again, a lot to
get to when it comes to these conversations we have

(01:25):
with Rory O'Neil each each and every day. Because President
Trump has skipped the second day of the g seventh
summit in Alberta, and this is due to what is
going on in the Middle East. So also another falling
out for Donald Trump, it seems, I mean, it was
Elon Musk, who, of course they seemed like, you know,

(01:46):
they seemed thick as thieves, was his right hand man
during the election, and then of course they had a
falling out and then they fought on the internet like
middle schoolers. Well, now you've got Tucker Carlson sharing some
thoughts about Donald Trump and how he's currently handling some
and that led to Donald Trump calling him. He called
him a name I don't know which, I don't want
to give the wrong name, but clearly not so surprising.

(02:09):
I suppose that if there's anybody that is maybe against
some things or not on the same page one thousand
percent with President Trump, he didn't like that. I think
that's been I think that's been well established. So anyways,
we're loaded today. I hope you guys will stick with us.
Your next update of traffic and weather coming your way
here in just a couple of minutes. We'll have an
update on sports coming up at five twenty five. Your

(02:31):
first news update with John Shannon around five thirty. You know,
the drill just setting the table here. But did you
guys get much rain? I know we all kind of
live in somewhat different areas. Did you guys get hit
with much rain?

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Last night? It came down.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
I was over and I was down at Fledge last
night for a function and it hit down there. Briefly
it started to come in, but by the time I
got to Hikes Point, it just opened up beyond belief.
And I guess we need to appreciate it now because
it's going to get pretty nasty high John, did you
get a lot of rain?

Speaker 4 (03:01):
We got some rain. It was like a cozy amount
of rain though I was sitting on my couch. I
had the NBA Finals on. Didn't really enjoy the result
of the NBA Finals, but I enjoyed kind of hearing
the rainfall. It wasn't super heavy, but I do know
a lot of places got some flooding overnight.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Yeah, eat town got hit really hard. There's I believe
eight streets that were closed off because of flooding. So
just you know, it's this is a pretty obvious thing
to a lot of people, but I don't often think
about it until.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I see it.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
And it can be you could be on one side
of the street, it could be pouring rain. You could
be on the other side of the street, and that
that not be what's going on, which is crazy. Yesterday
we were at my son's baseball game and there are
there's four there's four fields within the park and then
there's two that where where the t ball is played.
They're the smallest fields and they're probably you know, forty

(03:52):
yards between the two of them, and on one field
it was raining. On the other one, it hadn't started yet,
which is just wild. So you never really know what
time of the year. Yeah, you never know. So again
we're gonna have We're supposed to have a rainy week
and yesterday the rain held off until in fact, we
knew the rain was coming. And in the t ball game,

(04:12):
they play really two innings. Each team gets to hit
twice and if you get three out, you get off
the field. That didn't happen very often, so if you
score seven runs when you're at the plate, then then
it's the other team's turn. So they were just trying
to get it in as quick as they can because
we knew the rain was on the way, and sure enough,
right as soon as the last batter for the other
team got to hit, it started raining, so we got

(04:35):
it out of the way just in time.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
Good.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
Well, I mean, if you're looking for a pool weekend,
I know my wife's been clamoring for a pool weekend.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
It's gonna be this weekend.

Speaker 5 (04:41):
Dude.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
It is going to be hot, but no rain, hopefully
no rain.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Good It is a perfect pool weekend shipping out for
folks that want that.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I don't know what I'm what I'm in for this
summer because yesterday I feel like was just disgusting when
it comes to humid just the humidity is gross and
like it's just and started, like we right, somemer really
isn't It's kind of here, but it's kind of not right.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
I was out walking in Shelby Park yesterday, even at lunchtime,
and I noticed the heat starting to pick up.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
The humidity, Oh just sticky, yeah, just yuck.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
All right, we've got an update of traffic and weather
coming your way.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Also, we'll tell you what we're.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Continuing to well, we're continuing to learn more about the
shooter from Saturday morning in Minnesota, Vance Bolter.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
We'll give you the latest on that.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
On the other side, it's Kentucky at his morning news
on news radio eight forty WHAS.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Five point sixteen.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Here Kentucky at his morning news with Nick Coffee on
news Radio eight forty whas. Take us with you wherever
you go. Listen live on the iHeartRadio app. Also listen
live at WHAS dot com. So here is what we
know about the shooter, who has of course been captured.
He was able to see a judge yesterday, Vance Bolter.

(05:58):
Here's what we know right now as far as what
his plans were what went on leading up to the
murder and the attempted murder that that took place. And
I guess sort of just what I what I think
is wild to see text messages and stuff that that
he was sending to people and people were sending to him.
It's just it's chilling, to be honest with you. But

(06:20):
but here's what we here's here's what we know, uh
that when it comes to his his overall plan. I mean,
this this guy, if if he was going to execute
what I guess he seemingly put in put in motion,
he he didn't come close because he planned and wanted
to do a lot more than uh than than what
than what he was able to do, which is a

(06:40):
scary thing. But certainly, you know, there's no good there's
no silver lining here. I mean, he killed two people
and and and clearly tried to kill two others and
and had plans to to you know, make it a
lot worse than that.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
But let's see here. So he first targeted the.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Hoffmans and that those are the ones who ended up
being wounded shot, but they did survive. And then of
course he ended up going to the home of Melissa
and Mark Cortman and.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
And was was was killed him.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I mean, there's no other way to I'm dancing around it,
but that's just that's what he did, and it's it's awful.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
But he fled after that. Uh.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
And he was texting relative relatives and I'm trying to
gather is this a tech? Maybe he sent this to
his children, because that's the that's the context that that
I that I see here that would make it make sense.
But he said dad went to war last night. Oh
so I mean that's.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Is that interesting? What makes people tech? I mean, what
what happened along the way? And sometimes it's just simply
a wiring issue, but what happened along the way that
put this guy in that place?

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah, you know, again my curiosity to know, I have
hesitation to continue that curiosity because I just think, well.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
It doesn't matter.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
I mean that there's no and I don't mean to
insinuate that you were acting like he surely he had
a good reason though there's no there's no reason for it.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
But I mean just just somewhere along the line, and
this happens in any scenario. We saw that in our
own backyard over at the First National Bank. You know what,
you know, that was obviously a discronbal employee. It's a
common it's a common denominator in workplace shootings. I've been
in several places where it is interesting how companies are
now putting a priority on workplace shooter training. And you know,

(08:21):
most are very open about saying, listen, we know this
is this is the obvious, but we need to reinforce this,
We need to revisit this. And if you're an next
does this, if you're an ex politician or even a
current politician, does this put.

Speaker 5 (08:32):
You on this.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Remember when we had to Breonna Taylor riots and people
marched on on the mayor's house and then they had
to bring out metro works and block that off and
Governor Andy Bscher.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
I mean, our own mayor, somebody attempted to kill him exactly.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
It's it's yeah, I mean, you know, and this is
why when the mayor comes in to see us, he's
got his bodyguards.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
He comes and he.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Has that regardless if if if the terrible situation didn't
happen a few years ago. But right this suspect, which
I guess that's technically what we still have to refer
to him as but he visited homes of four state
lawmakers the night of the shootings with the intent to
kill them, and of course he ended up not getting

(09:14):
to all those places, I guess to execute what he
wanted to execute. But just I mean, yeah, to go
back to what we talked about yesterday, Scott, I thought,
you know, if you're somebody that does know this individual,
and you you are completely you know, jaw on the
floor because you just I mean again, I don't even
if you know somebody that's that's somewhat troubled or somewhat

(09:36):
overly into politics to the extent that they let it
consume them to where they just are you know, versions
of themselves that you really know it's not really them.
Even if that's the case, there's no scenario, under any
circumstance where this news comes out you realize you know
the person and you think, oh, yeah, checks out.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Makes sense. I mean, I would hope not.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
But going back to what but yesterday, if you do
know this person, you would always wonder should I should
I have seen a red flag here? Should I have
maybe realized when this comment was made that there was
something to it that I shouldn't have just brushed off,
you know, and then everybody should feel blame. But I
can I can imagine if I was somebody that knew
someone even casually, and they were to do something heinous

(10:21):
like this, I would always wonder could I have maybe
picked up on something and helped?

Speaker 3 (10:26):
And you know, if you're that person sometime, look if
you feel yourself getting too close to the edge, pull
back and reach out for help.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
There's a lot of help out.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
There, and most of us can kind of feel and
we're getting a little too close. So that's that's a
great story for some day.

Speaker 5 (10:39):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
All right, We've got Rory o Oneil going to join
us coming up at five point forty five. We'll get
more on this this Minnesota gunman, as well as what's
going on with Donald Trump heading back from Canada early.
But next we've got sports coming your way. But first
it's another update of traffic and weather right here on
news radio eight forty WHAS.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Thank you, John.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
It is five thirty five here Kentucky in this morning
news with Nick Coffee on News Radio eight forty w
h as. The crew is here, my friends, Scott Fitzgerald,
John Alden, John Shannon, I need I need bios on
you guys, and let me explain myself. So I mentioned
earlier yesterday was my son. I didn't say this, but
it was this last t ball game of the season.

(11:19):
But we were leaving the game yesterday and he said, Dad,
did you make any new friends? And I said what, No, why?
And he was like, well, you started a new job.
Didn't you make new friends? And I was like, well,
I guess I did. They were kind of always friends,
but now we worked together. And he said, well, you
told me when I go to kindergarten this year, I'm

(11:40):
going to make new friends. So I thought you made
new friends too, and he was asking about you guys,
and I fell Also, I could tell you, I could
tell him who. His name is Mason, but he goes
by Moose like it or not. He just that became
his nickname when he was a big old baby. But
you know, I told him, I've got Scott. He's he's
a good he's been a part of this specific show
for a long long time. He's met John, but that

(12:02):
was a long time ago. He was probably too young
to remember.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
So, yeah, I've got friend. I got new friends, I mean,
but we're always We've always been friends. So it's not
like it's a new thing.

Speaker 5 (12:11):
But that's a thought.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah, well he's real receptive stuff. So yeah, what position
does he play?

Speaker 5 (12:17):
Baseball?

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Wherever they need him?

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Right?

Speaker 1 (12:20):
He he likes being the pitcher, but it's T ball,
so he doesn't actually pitch. But it's an important position
because you know, you're the one who's if they don't
get enough contact on it, you're running up to grab
it and either throw it to first or of course
make the play at home. That's usually what I mean.
There's a there's a lot of you know, there's a
lot of more often than not, they get seven runs
and then there's maybe one out or no outs and

(12:41):
they just say, okay, seven runs is enough. Now we're
gonna now we're gonna move on.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
So yeah, he's.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Uh, he's he just turned five at the beginning of
this month, and he's already played every he's played baseball,
flag football, in basketball. And when I was I don't
feel like it. When I was five, I played I
think five with the year I started playing you sports, Yeah,
I don't remember it, right, I remember it being something
you could do so young. But he's he's certainly he's

(13:07):
certainly loving it.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
So that's awesome, dude, that's that's awesome that he's into that.
I mean, I will never forget my days of playing,
you know, baseball. And in fact, I had a conversation
with my mom because we grew up in a day
where parents didn't go to every practice. My mom maybe
went to one one of my games all year, and
I'm like, Mom, you kind of missed out. I mean,
it was when my son played baseball. He was a lefty,
so everybody wanted him to pitch. And then he had

(13:29):
one great game and I remember that because I took
a screenshot of this.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Well that's something you remember exactly, dude.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
And so and then he took up hockey, in which
I did. I did not encourage at all. I was
very careful to not encourage the hockey.

Speaker 1 (13:42):
You don't want feel like you were forcing it on
him being go because he knew that you liked hockey,
and he didn't want to feel like he had to
do it because of you.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
I got you.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
And but it was fun watching him nerve wracking mind
you a couple of times he took a couple of shots.
My wife literally she already had anxiety, but she said,
my anxiety went to, like eleven when we went to
hockey games.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
What year or do you start playing hockey around here?
Because there's not nearly as many leagues for that as
there is all the other.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
Spill you're round here.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
Yeah, you're right, but boy, they do and you can
tell a big difference when the kids. Surprisingly, bro Owensboro
and Northern Kentucky are the big.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
They've got some presents for youth hockey. Owensboro is huge
because they have that nice ice arena they have there nice.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
But but anyway, I'm glad your son's being a part
of this. Do you start to see a favorite of his, like,
does he lean one way or another?

Speaker 2 (14:28):
Is he just kind of in the mix for everything?

Speaker 4 (14:30):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (14:30):
Man, he he loves. I mean, I'm trying not. I mean,
I guess I'm gonna try to follow what you did
and not make it seem like I want him to
be a part of I want him to follow basketball
more than others. But I mean it has kind of
worked out naturally to wear in basketball, and he enjoys
all the sports and he's he's you know, I feel
like he's he's certainly competitive and everything he's played for kids,

(14:52):
his age. But in basketball, he had his first summer
league game this past Saturday, and there's just a level
of confidence and aggressive that's just not there. He's a
little bit more passive in football. Although flag football, this
is just my opinion, nobody else's, so I don't want
to act like it's some you know, I'm only speaking
for myself here. I think flag football can be counterproductive

(15:13):
for football with kids because you're what you're teaching them
to do when playing flag football, like you can get
you can get down some some the basics and and
really I feel like his first season of flag football,
it was really just understanding what it's like to go
to practice and be a part of a team. I
mean he was four when he played that, But like
what you're teaching them to do both with the ball
and when they don't have the ball, offense and defense.

(15:33):
It's so much not what football is when you get there.
So there's no real harm in it. But I think
sometimes maybe it could be a little bit counter productive.
But baseball, he's it comes natural for him, but he
doesn't love it. Yeah, football he just he's eager, he
wants to learn more and he wants to hit, but
he can't hit yet. Basketball. He's just I mean, he's
out there clapping it up. He's he's I mean, he's
he's doing forward a little bit of everything, you know,

(15:56):
good for him. So it's being being a dad is
is awesome. And and now that my son's old enough
to play sports, it's it's a.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
It'll be a lot of money too, I'm sure as
he continues to grow up. But you know, it's gonna
be a lot of fun, that's.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
For sure for you. So I'll let him know.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
I'll let him know I talked to my friends about
about it.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Right, that's right, all right, We've.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
Got another friend coming our way in just a few minutes.
That's Rory O'Neil, who set to join us of NBC.
We've got another update of trafficking weather coming your ways
well right here on news radio eight forty whas. It
is five forty six here Kentucky had his morning news
with Nick Coffee on news radio eight forty whas, and
it has time to bring in Rory O'Neal of NBC News. Rory,

(16:38):
what can you tell us about the latest when it
comes to the conflict with Israel and Iran? Obviously, that's
been a developing story in the lat well for quite
some time. Now, what's the latest here, Rory.

Speaker 5 (16:51):
Yeah, for decades, I suppose. Yeah. President Trump just returned
to the White House a few moments ago. He cut
short his trip to the G seven summit in Calgary.
He said he needs to be back in Washington in
order to address this developing situation. The President put out
a warning on truth socials alerting people in the city

(17:11):
of Tehran to evacuate the city, which is caused mass
panic really with big traffic jams of people trying to
get out of the city. But the back and forth
seems to continue with the ballistic missiles being lobbied by
some by the Iranians, along with drones drone strikes by
Israel as well. But they've also got the air power

(17:32):
that with a considerable air force that Israel has, they
seem now to have no threat from Iran almost across
the entire country. They almost seem to be able to
fly at will, with many of the air defenses in
Iran already taken out of operation.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
Trump claimed that Aron would like to talk about de escalation,
and he added that they had sixty days and now
on the sixty first day, they want to they want
to talk about de escalation, and his response is they
don't have a deal. And he also went on to
say that they're they're not they're not winning this war.
Is there, I mean, do we do we expect there
to be any any leniency here to to to maybe

(18:13):
help with the escalation. Does it seem that that could
happen here?

Speaker 5 (18:17):
Well, look, Israel feels it is its very existence is
on the line if Uran is able to develop a
nuclear weapon, and Israel, Israeli intelligence believes that Israel that
Iran is much closer to getting that weapon than the
American intelligence operations. So Israel says, look, we're doing this
to save our country. That's why they're taking these more

(18:41):
aggressive actions, also taking out the nuclear scientists, the military
leadership in Iran and directly attacking some of those facilities
where uranium was being riched enriched. So they feel that
this is really a defensive move in the long run.
Of course, President Trump is just trying to get both
sides to back down and get Iran to agree to

(19:04):
stop its nuclear ambitions.

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Royal Nail of NBC News is with Usero Kentucky in
his morning news news radio eight forty whas Vance Bolter.
He is the suspect in the shooting that killed the
Minnesota state legislator and her husband and wounded two others.
Vance Bolter was in court on Monday afternoon. What have
we learned in the last day or so since he
was captured as far as maybe what was going on

(19:27):
with him leading up to this heinous murder and attempted murder?
And what are we learning I guess maybe more so
as far as motives here?

Speaker 5 (19:37):
Yeah, you know, it's still a bit of a gray
area on the motive itself. According to prosecutors, his whole
life is a series of contradictions, and it seems that
the motive in this case may be as well. You know,
we saw the four note kings flyers in his car,
But at the same time we know he has a
long record of the conservative causes, but he was appointed

(19:58):
to these state panels by Democratic governors, so it does
seem to be a lot of conflicting information in his background.
We now know, though, that he is facing both state
and federal charges. The state charges will likely be upgraded
to murder in the first degree once a grand jury
in Minnesota can be seated. He's also facing federal charges

(20:18):
that include murder and stalking. The Feds have said they
have not ruled out the idea of pursuing the death penalty,
although the state of Minnesota itself does not permit the
death penalty.

Speaker 1 (20:28):
So I saw that there were some text messages that
were sent, I suppose after he had committed this awful
murder and was on the run. Briefly, do we know
exactly who he was communicating with via text message at
this time?

Speaker 5 (20:44):
Well, we know he was texting his wife, some family members,
and some friends he had been staying with when renting
a room, different messages to them. One text to his
wife said, quote, Dad went to war last night. So
that's one of the messages he put out there. You know,
we know he had this list of people, whether they
were potential targets. He had at least five firearms in

(21:07):
the vehicle that was abandoned there, and it seemed that
he was ready to go on some sort of a spree.
Still not exactly sure who was being targeted. We know
he was a staunchly anti abortion. Some of his writings
and some of the posts he had online showed he
was also disappointed I was putting him politely with some

(21:28):
of the sexual orientation issues that were being or sexual
permissiveness I suppose being allowed in the US. So a
lot going on there and they're still trying to unpack him.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
Rory, you are the best. Thank you so much for
your tom. Enjoy the rest of your day, my friend.

Speaker 5 (21:43):
Thanks Nick.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
All right, that's Rory and Neale NBC News.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
We will take a quick time out lets you get
caught up with weather traffic. We've got sports coming your
way with Scotty and of course another news update with
John Shannon just eight minutes away right here on news
radio eight forty whas
