(00:39):
Welcome. We're the L and KMorning Show. I'm Mellen Morning,
I'm Ryan Man, I'm Social QueenDarlene, and we are eight years old
today it's eighth Giving Tuesday broadcast.I just want to say thank you Ryan
and thank you Darlene, because wecome together every year for the kids at
CHLA, and it's so important. It's important to our city. It's important
(01:02):
to the families who need them,it's important to the people who don't even
know that they're going to need themone day. And the jewel of our
city. That's what we say.Darline. I know that you've, you
know, been through those doors manytimes. I get my body shakes inside
when I talk about the hospital becauseI before working here pulled into that garage
(01:27):
many times as the mother of apatient and not knowing like I had no
more answers, I didn't know whatto do. I didn't know where to
go. I was the first timemom and then to a child with special
needs, and not knowing that allof the specialists we needed were there.
And I remember it specifically, remembergoing one time through as an emergency patient
(01:49):
because my daughter was in a lotof pain and she's nonverbal, so she's
not able to speak to me andtell me what's wrong. And all I
knew is that she kept hitting herselfin the face, and I knew I'm
like, I'm feeling like she's inpain, and so we it was the
middle of the night. I couldn'tget her to calm down. We drove
her in the garage is the entryto the er there, and I just
(02:15):
remember feeling nervous, like I don'tknow what's going to happen. I hope
they can help her. And thennot only did they calm me down,
but more importantly, they calmed herdown and they found ways to work around
her not being able to share howshe felt. And not only did we
leave with a knowledge of this isgoing to be okay, but she was
(02:37):
no longer in pain. And they'reone of the few people or few places
around here in southern California that hasa specialty dental clinic, so all along
she needed emergency dental work, whichis why she was hitting herself. And
you know how painful that is.Yes, anyway, it's been one thing
after another. But for years now, bella sixteen, and I always told
(03:00):
myself, like anything I could do, even prior to me working in media
or doing this special broadcast, it'smy favorite thing to do because I always
remembered that moment and it feels sogreat to give back to a place that
gave so much to me. Yeah, my god, and I do want
to kind of walk it all theway back to the origin. Zellen.
(03:20):
You know you ended up there andunfortunate circumstances in an emergency surgery situation with
your son Calvin, who took atough hit, dirty hit in football,
and I will never forget. Ithink you actually said it from the lobby
while you were waiting for him.You said, guys, this place is
incredible. We have to do abroadcast. We have to do something to
help and me and Darr looked ateach other and we're like, let's roll,
(03:44):
let's do it. Yeah. Fromday one, you guys have been
like, yeah, we're doing this. And then we asked and guess what
they said, yes, Yes,they said yes. So we want to
be in your lobby, We wantto be about this place, we want
to help and they said yes,And that's formed a beautiful relationship and friendship.
And I don't know, it's justit's just I can't imagine not being
(04:09):
a part of the CHLA family. And we will be here helping them forever,
so we can't help them without you. Thank you for being here.
I'm giving Tuesday and you can giveright now. Coast one O three five
dot com slash CHL. I've saidit before, I'll say it again.
Paul for President, and then haveto remind myself. He is the president
(04:30):
of Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Heis the man who oversees all things CHLA,
not only here in Los Angeles, but also on a global level.
World leaders, life savers right hereat CHLA in our city, led by
this man, Paul Viviano. Thankyou so much for coming on with us
like we have for eight years. Now we're so honored that we can be
(04:54):
here to help support. Yeah,I know you always do. We can't
thank you enough for all your support, wonderful work you do on our behalf.
It means so much to us andit's just wonderful to have your your
support and you're so just an advocatefor us and we're so grateful, so
thank you, Thank you both, and it really it really means a lot
(05:15):
to thank you for the for thevisibility and the advocacy. Oh my gosh,
Well this is one of our favoritedays ever every year, Giving Tuesday,
and it's all for ch l A, the kids, the families,
all the caregivers, just everything thatyou do, this magical jewel of a
place and you lead it all.Paul, And I've oftentimes wondered, because
I, you know, I seeyou work. What is it that you
(05:39):
love the most? Like when yougo home at the end of the day,
you must feel really really good aboutwhat this hospital provides. Well,
I'm just so proud to be partof this organization and to uphold the legacy
that is Children's Hospital Los Angeles. This is gratifying and satisfying work. And
(06:00):
that the fact that we are sohighly ranked number five in the United States,
number one in California, number onein the Pacific region. That we're
here to serve everyone. On topof all the incredible accomplishments that CHLA is
recognized for every year, the factthat we are the safety net, that
(06:20):
we provide care to every single childand every single family, regardless of their
financial status, is really what distinguishesus world class care and we're the safety
net, and that's enabled because ofthe generosity of this community. And so
this is a very very very gratifyingand satisfying work that we undertake every day,
(06:45):
and it can't be done without thecollaboration and the support of this fantastic
community. Well, let's talk aboutthe fun aspect. So we know that
you provide critical care to all levelsof care, from you know, like
my son with an emergency surgery ona broken bone and all the way to
transplants. But the hospital also isvery warm and fun. It's not like
a hospitals. It's amazing that weyou know, just can't call it like
(07:08):
the magic capsule or something. Yeah, but you know, Ryan and I
come over, as you know, and sometimes we'll see all kinds of celebrities
walking through the hallways. There's VinScully, There's Justin Turner, oh all
of the La Kings. Are youever starstruck when you are just walking the
hallways and you see someone unexpected?Yeah? Completely. I'm a star tuk
(07:30):
literally every week when we're blessed tohave visitors come and inspire our children and
and and to support those who arein need and just provide that glimpse of
hope and optimism that a celebrity canbring. And the vast majority of celebrities
(07:51):
who come here who grace us withtheir presence, don't want any publicity,
don't want anybody to know. Youknow, you bump into them, bump
into them, and we thank themso profusely for their support. But they
do it because they care about thesechildren and want to want to support them
and be there to nurture them. And so it's a it's it's an act
of selflessness that that you know, that that that we see literally every week,
(08:16):
where we see celebrities here spending timewith children, reading to them,
walking with them, speaking to theirfamily, just supporting them is such a
such a fantastic aspect of our community. And I'm star truck all the time
because because I'm so impressed with theirselfless nature. Yeah. One of the
things too, Paul, that thatmaybe you left off that list is board
(08:39):
games and Ellen and I have donethat before. And Ellen we were playing
go fish with this sweet little girl, just the cutest and Ellen knocked over
the board and all of the littlefish and pieces were flying everywhere, and
I think she was winning. Yeah, she told everybody you guys were cheating.
I don't know, but there isa warmth about your place, Children's
(09:01):
Hospital, Los Angeles. Paul Vivianawith us now president of the hospital CEO.
There's just a warmth. We hearthat the imagineers designed the lobby and
when the minute you walk in,and that's how I felt the very first
time that I ever walked through thosedoors, and I went through the emergency
room doors, and even there, there's just this sense of we have you
(09:24):
don't worry, And it's so comfortingfor families to know that no matter what
comes across clinically, we're prepared.Everything we do is built for and around
children and your families. I lovethat. Paul Viviana, President's CEO,
Children's Hospital Los Angeles, here withus kicking off giving Tuesday. Are you
(09:45):
ready for this amazing day? We'reready and I can't believe it's here.
It happened so fast, but we'rehere and we're ready and so grateful to
you for your support and to ourcommunity. We can't thank you enough for
your generosity and supportive Old Hospital LosAngeles, and you can give right now.

Morning Show on Coast one oh threepoint five plot point I'm Giving Tuesday,
Brian Darlene, Who am I obsessedwith? Well? Your son? Yes,
and I guess coming up next year? On Giving Tuesday on Coast one
on three point five. Calvin onhis way, you're a mean one,
mister grinch. Look who's here onGiving Tuesday? Calvin? Hello, Mom,
(10:28):
how are you doing? Welcome?H good to be here, Calvin.
Eight years? Can you believe italready? Yeah? Eight years?
I mean, I feel like everyyear we do it, I see it
in a different light. But theone constant is I'm just very grateful to
be doing it. I'm grateful it'shappening. I'm very grateful for Children's Hospital
especially, it's a wonderful place.Well you know, Calvin, it all
(10:50):
started with your broken elbow that gavebirth to this coast broadcast all day for
Giving Tuesday. We were in thehospital you had emerged see surgery. It
was scary. Any surgery is scary. And while we were in there,
we saw we saw serious stuff andI just don't want to thank you for
(11:11):
breaking your elbow. But because ofthat, thank god it wasn't a life
threatening situation. We saw how muchgood CHLA does for the entire community.
And then you know, every yearnow you've come back wherever you are in
the world, and you know, really gotten this started. Yeah, no,
And it's it's funny to see somethingthat was like, you know,
(11:35):
so bad at the time, butyou know, it turned out to be
a very good thing. And Ilook at my injury. Mine compared to
what else is happening at CCHLA,mine is very very not too bad,
you know, But with the stuffthey treat there is I mean, it's
life and death. But that's whyit's just such a wonderful place. And
(11:56):
I'm, like I said before,I'm I'm very happy to be a part
of it and being a part ofall the good that they do there because
it's just a really special place.Yeah. I know, you were just
a teenager when you were first atCHLA, and now you are a man,
and things change, you know,in perspective as the years go on.
I know, we toured the hospitalrecently and we saw corners and parts
(12:18):
of the hospital we'd never seen before, and it really was emotional for me
to see, like the helipad forinstance, that is some serious stuff landing
on that rooftop, and cla isoffer so much hope for people who are
critically injured or in really really abad way waiting for transplants. You know,
(12:43):
we've had double transplant patients on whogo on to lead these beautiful,
normal lives because of CHLA. Yeah. Well, and another thing for the
tour of those could see was allof the you know, like the library
and the toy room and stuff likethat. And you realize that anyone can,
i mean, no matter how muchyou can help, you can volunteer,
you can donate even just a littleamount, and you realize that you
(13:05):
may seem i mean, you know, maybe volunteering there once might seem like
not a lot, but to thosekids and to everyone it is the world.
It really is yeah, you know. In case you're just tuning in,
this is my son Calvin. Yes, he has a man voice,
and he is here on Giving Tuesday. We are raising money for c CHLA
(13:26):
all day long. Will be hereon this broadcast. And Calvin, we
know that you have to get offto school to finish this first quarter.
But I just I'm just so gratefulthat number one, you're my son.
I love you so much, butalso that you are the reason and a
part of this Giving Tuesday that youalways come back to give. I'm just
(13:48):

yeah, no, exactly. Andthis past year actually I met someone of
its school whose sister was in Children'sHospital, and we got to talking and
(15:01):
she found out that I do this, you know, we do Giving Tuesday
at CCHLA every year, and shethanked me for doing it, and I
said, obviously, I love it, but it's I feel like there's many
people at the hospital who do muchmore work than me, and doctors and
the nurses and everything like that. But then she said, thank you,
because you know, anyone who helpsCHLA is a part of it, you
know, no matter how big orhow small, it's just being there,

being supporting for them and doing anythingyou can really for such a great place.

know it's one of the gifts ofyour life, just being able to be
there and see all the magic thatthey create on a daily basis. So
(16:33):
many people they say, you know, oh, I can't imagine going there.
It must be so depressing, itmust be so sad, and it's
like, no, it's actually theopposite. That place is filled with so
much hope, so much inspiration andjust getting to walk through those doors you

(18:00):
all for the kids and the familiesat CCHLA Children's Hospital, Los Angeles,
the jewel of our city. CBSis the way that Matt LeBlanc found his
way to CHLA. He was working. They said, hey, come on
over and you've never turned back.Matt LeBlanc. Were so happy that you
are back with us. You alwaysshow up for the kids. You are
(18:22):
such a great friend. Oh well, I'm happy to be a part of
it. I really am. Andcongratulations, that's excellent what you guys are
doing for a really great cause.Well, Matt, we feel about the
place the way you do. Wewill never stop. And this is the
kind of place CHLA that I woulddrive by it so many times, Matt
and I would be like, oh, there's Children's Hospital. And I never
(18:42):
knew what was beyond the doors ofCHLA until I needed them. I needed
them for an emergency surgery for myson. It was a football injury.
And when I walked in there asa mother who was freaked out, probably
more than my son, I wasjust so struck by the call I felt
and how wow, these this placereally truly is so different. Yeah,
(19:08):
you know, I got the Igot an opportunity to go when I was
working for CBS for on men witha plan. We went down and we
visited some kids and kind of tooka tour and gave some toys. CBS,
you know, has been a longterm partnership they've had with Children's Hospital
(19:29):
LA and they've done some you know, they've created a lot of awareness for
the hospital as well, which isgreat. But I got to see firsthand
just the kind of care that's givenand also just you know, just the
the part of my friends, thehand that some kids get dealt in life,
and it's just was so heartbreaking andjust anything people can do to help.
(19:55):
I mean, it's such you know, I think sometimes we take our
health for granted, and to seethese kids just get such a disadvantage at
the beginning of their lives, it'sjust it's really really hard for the families.
And the one thing I did. That stuck out most to me was
how the hospital puts the kids first, not like other hospitals. It's they
(20:17):
it's really about the child and what'sbest for the child. And you know,
they make it really they're really accommodatingand make it easy on the families
as well, Like there's a bedin the room for the kids, for
the parent to stay or or thecaregiver, whoever it is, and they
just there. It's just a reallyinspiring place. And I was really moved.
(20:40):
So I decided to sort of getinvolved and help wherever I can those
people can. If people can goout of their way a little bit to
help some kids that are really inneed and a place that really helps them,
I say, go for it.Yeah, I want to hunt it
down. You know what we learned, you know this morning talking to everybody,
(21:03):
the range of what they do thereis just so tremendous. You know,
you think of a hospital, butyou don't really think about everything they
can do and treat there in thisplace as at all. Matt. We've
talked to four year old heart yeah, heart transplant, double double transplant patients
and then also broken arm with pinsin it and all the families and the
mothers and the fathers, and thedoctors and the specialists that come on and
(21:26):
it really is truly you know, they win these awards in the nation.
They're the world's best, and we'reso fortunate to have them here and that
they open their doors to everyone.Yeah, and like I said earlier,
the really the most impressive thing ishow they put the kids first. They're
fantastic. I can't say enough goodthings about the doctors there, and just
(21:47):
even like the nursing staff, they'rejust care. You know. It's not
a place where it's like oh yeah, everybody just seems to be communicating on
a team. And I witnessed itfirsthand when I was when I was on
the floor and I was looking atsome of these some of these kids that
really needed outstanding care, and boy, they were getting it. The care
is outstanding. Matt LeBlanc with uson giving Tuesday. We can keep you
(22:12):
forever. I could just like sithere and listen to your voice. He's
gotta go, he's got to gohunt down the people. Yeah, I'm
coming. I'm coming for you.Thank you, Matt Levelanc. Lots of
love to you, Thank you. Thanks for the blessing of what you do.
Thanks you guys, keep up thegreat work. I really appreciate it,

(25:00):
bring us so much joy. Wethank you with all of our hearts.
Tell us run how you first gotinvolved with CHLA. Well, I
was at a an event hold manymany years ago, and there's a doctor
there who did the surgery, andI casually said you know, I don't
you like to see a surgery somedayAnd he said, well, why don't
you come and join me tomorrow. So, anyway, long story short,
(25:21):
I had an opportunity to go thenext day stand by him when he was
doing the surgery, and right byhim, I watched this young man when
they opened him up, prepared hisheart, took his lungs to put him
aside, and then they put himon sustained and then when they sewed him
back up again, they tried tosew him up, the lungs wouldn't work,
(25:41):
and they finally after fifty eight minutes, got them to work. So
it was quite a traumatic thing.I thought, my gosh, that I
watched a young man who could havedied but they saved his life. And
so obviously you see something that changesyour life. We had so we had
unopportunity to visit some hostels, thestaff from our restaurants, and nobody was
(26:02):
signing up to go, and Isaid, guys, you need to go.
You may not see a surgery, but I want you to know that
you need to go through the hospital. It'll change your life. And they
came back. They thanked me overand over again. It was a life
changing moment just to run the hospital. Yeah. You know, they always
say thank you, and we saythank you to them. Yes, yes,
And congrats on your one hundred yearanniversary launching your million dollar charitable campaign
(26:26):
to support pediatric cancer research. Imean, Ron, the world needs more
givers like you. Well, well, thank It's easy. You know,
we've been very fortunate and blessed inmany ways. Someone's been hard work on
our part and the rest gist ofmonful support and great things happened to us.
And it just seemed like a greatopportunity to highlight something special and get
(26:49):
attention to it. And my sonsaid, why don't your rate half of
meeting? And I said, itdoesn't have the same same thing that a
million dollars has, And it justseemed like a chance to draw attention to
and raise a you know, substantialamount of money for something that's really very
special. So special, absolutely, and there are so many ways to support.
(27:10):
You can become an El Cholo vipRyan. This is definitely you know,
well for all of us, makea one hundred dollars donation and get
a VIP card to enjoy free Carmen'snachos. Through the end of the year
and more specials to come next year. Well, well you have an awesome
also, if you've been to ourrestaurant, you know the high back wooden
boots are kind of iconic to whowe are and they're kind of special.
(27:30):
But I thought what we will dois auction off permanent naming rights to one
hundred booths, meaning one hundred years, and for five thousand dollars you can
get a big brass pack with yourname forever in one those boots. And
that's been red be well received.Nice. Ron, You know you bring

so many families so much joy throughall you do for c CHLA and we're
so grateful for you. Well, thank you. It's a it's been an

the work that they it's it's unbelievableand especially if you're one of those families
that benefits from it, it's youknow, it's one of the most amazing
things in the world. It reallyis. Rob Thomas mash Box twenty.

Thank you also to El Cholo matchingdollar for dollar to twenty five thousand

Love that place. How many timeshave you driven by CHLA. Maybe you
are a patient or a patient parentor family touched by HLA, maybe you
work there, And we're just sograteful that we have this place here in
(31:41):
the Southland and with us right nowDoctor Alan Wayne, pediatrician in chief,
the Big Cheese, Senior VP ofAcademic Affairs. So not only dos CHLA
serve the Southland, but also kidsfrom around the world. We do and
last year alone more than seven hundredthousand visits of kids. So it's a
(32:01):
huge enterprise with major impact, notjust here in La County where we are
clearly the dominant provider of pediatric specialtycare, but as you say, around
the globe. We run a massiveclinical trials program to provide access to our
populations, not just here again, from around the world to the latest and
(32:24):
greatest, cutting edge therapies, mostpromising new therapies across all conditions diseases from
birth all the way up through youngadulthood. And I will be frank thanks
to you and our community. Wecan do this here despite the fact that
this is really expensive therapy and thepopulation we serve, more than three quarters,
(32:47):
are on state funding. So weare providing high quality, high technology,
advanced cares to populations that previously didnot have access to the sorts of
therapies and philanthropy makes that possible.Oh thank you, doctor. And I
saw the most beautiful statue, theone outside of the rabbit when you walk
(33:08):
into CCHLA, and this was givenby the Zapata family. They donated this
beautiful, big iron statue of ared bunny, stuffed bunny, and the
bunny is all hunched over, notfeeling well. That's when you go in.
When you come out, the bunnyhas his arms in the air and
he's chest in the air and hisears and he's the happy bunny. And
(33:30):
that's what happens through those doors, when you come in and when you leave.
Well, I appreciate that you recognizethat. And of course all it
takes is meeting one child and familywho've been through our doors and have gone
through transformative care that you're describing. It happens every day here, and it's
an inspiration. I think Doctor two, there's an element that maybe we haven't
(33:52):
touched on yet. And in additionto the medical advancements, there's also the
happiness advancements. And every time wetalk to a patient, the first thing
out of their mouth, their parents'mouth, is how much they love the
staff. The doctors love them aspeople and as adults. I don't think
we say that. It's not likewe go to the doctor and are like
(34:12):
in love with our doctor. There'ssomething magical about you guys as people.
Well, thank you for that.I will give credit where credits due.
First of all our nurses. They'rein the trenches twenty four to seven,
no question. Our docts are spectacularand they bring compassion and dedication. But
I want to give credit to thenurses who literally are working twenty four to
(34:35):
seven, through holidays, nights, and weekends to provide that kind of compassionate,
loving care. But thank you foracknowledging the love that is shown by
our care teams here at COCHLA forChildren and Families Well, Doctor Allen Wayne,
Pediatrician in Chief CHLA, we arein awe of you and all you
(34:55):
do every day. Can't thank youenough. We are in awe of you
and all of your listeners and supporters. We are grateful to the entire community
that comes together, not just aroundthe holidays, not just around Giving Tuesday,
but year round to allow us todo the things we've been talking about
today. The kids that come hereare looking for hope. They're looking for
(35:19):
therapies that previously didn't exist. They'relooking for a life of good health without
pain and suffering, and we're ableto bring more and more of that to
the kids we serve thanks to thepartnership with you and the philanthropic community that
helps support the mission of Children's HospitalLos Angeles. So thank you all,

(36:30):
thank you. I just want tosay I've never seen so much publicity
for facial hair and short shorts asyou have been receiving. No, thank
you. Some people do politics,I do. I do short shorts.
I'd love your answer. They're shorts, They're supposed to be short. That's
so greaty, come and thank youfor giving us. Wish we all get
(36:53):
to see it over the holiday breakand here we are on Giving Tuesday,
so it's like a game watching withall the hidden Easter eggs. Yeah,
there's a lot of fun stuff inthere. And you know, it's under
year one hundred years of Disney, and I love the fact that it's all
about wishes and wishing on a starand uh, and there's a lot of
(37:15):
fun stuff in there for the DisneyDiehard. Do you know every morning as
I'm driving to work in the dark, there's always like that big bright north
star. I always make a wish, like just for I always every morning
I make a wish. I can'tit's stuck in my mind. So I
believe in that. Do you dothat? Yeah, I mean I definitely.
Like a buddy of mine has ahouse out in the desert where you
(37:39):
can really really see the sky,and when you're out there, you it's
incredible when you look up and yousee the shooting stars and satellites passing by,
and you know, sometimes there's areally bright planet and just to realize
how how small we are in thisyou know, infinite infinite universe, it's
(38:00):
pretty pretty special. I do think, you know, either wishing on a
star just kind of meditating on thegreat expanse and the great mystery of it
all is a nice way to relativizethings. And thank you for all you
do for Children's Hospital. LA.You always come through, and I just
(38:21):
think that, you know, thebest thing about any relationship is just showing
up for each other. And weare so grateful for you. Absolutely.
I mean, I think it's niceto know that no matter who you are,
where you come from, there's certainthings that I think can unite us,
and the health and well being andsafety and joy of children is certainly
(38:44):
a way that we can all cometogether. Yes, I was just there.
Have you ever been up on thehelipad? Yeah, they've invited me
up on the helipap But usually whenI go, I'm gonna, I'm going
to time constraint is I got toread. I got to read books to
kids. So it's either reading orheliport. I went up on the helipad.
(39:05):
It was it was just amazing. You think of all the life saving
landings that have happened there. Andthen went to the nick you and they
showed me a Premie diaper and itwas so tiny and there's so much love
there in the baby cuddlers, andthen I hung out with the therapy dogs.
I kind of did the gauntlet ofeverything that they had to offer and
some things I had never done before. And now I love the place even
(39:29):
more, if that's even possible.Yeah, it's just extraordinary what they're they're
able to do, and all ofthe life saving procedures and the difficult cases
that they get, and the factthat they treat not only all of Los
Angeles but some of the hardest casesin the country. It's a really,
really wonderful place. Every time Igo there, you know, I think
(39:52):
I react sensitively to the you know, you know that kids are going through
hard stuff, so it can bepretty emotional. But to see the overwhelming
joy and positivity of the people thatwork there, I mean, they are
really the warriors we should we shouldbe patting on the back because they're in
there day in and day out.Well, now you can bring your Disney
(40:14):
character into life and walk the halls, you know, and give them a
wish live. Yeah, yeah,I'll work. I'll work on dying my
go to and fluffing those eyebrows. All right, Chris, Well, thank
you so much. Thanks for beinghere on Giving Tuesday, I know you're
(40:34):
there for the kids all the time. My pleasure. Thank you again for
all the work that you do,and everybody out there, if you have
any money to spare, this isabout the best thing you can do between
children and animals. I think it'sa no brainer. They need all the
love and all the support that wecan give. And if you have a
couple extra dollars to help the greatpeople down at CHLA do what they do,
(40:57):
please do. It's the time ofyear to do it and you'll be
better for it. So well said. Lots of love to you, Chris.
All right, back at you,Chris Pine, given a CHLA.

We cannot thank you enough. We'reso grateful. You're on Giving Tuesday
and every day. Today morning showhost one oh three point five. Well,
(41:40):
you're going to meet someone like thatcoming up. Her name is Kyrie.
She's a special friend of ours hereon Giving Tuesday. It's Coast one
of three point five. Well lookwho's here on Giving Tuesday? Our good
friend we haven't seen for four years. I guess you've been too busy.
But Kyrie is back. Kyrie, welcome, Hi, nice to see you
(42:02):
again. We saw you when youwere eleven and now you're fifteen. Yes,
and we hear you're still sassy.I'd hope so. Yes. Now,
Kyrie, as you may recall, was a sassy young thing who had
a rare double organ transplant procedure,a new kidney and a new liver.
(42:23):
How are they treating you? Now? They're very good. I go to
my nephrologist or my kidney specialist oncea month and my livery team once a
year, so they're very good. And we know that you named your kidney
and your liver that have been transplantedinto your body. Now they're part of
you. Could you refresh us onthose names? Yes, I named my
(42:46):
kidney after my nephrologists. I namedit Diva, okay, yeah, and
then my liver I named it Georgeafter my livery specialists, Yeah, Diva
and George. And when you arehanging out with your other teen friends,
do you feel like a normal teen? Last time I saw you were just
(43:07):
a little kid. Yeah, Ithink so. I think it's like it's
definitely like a big change for mefrom like going from like weekly hospital visits
to like being able to hang outwith my friends and everything. So I
think it's definitely like a really bigpositive change in my life. And bless
(43:28):
the donors, you know, Imean really life saving donors. I'm so
grateful for them. I I Iactually often think about them. I think,
like, wow, like if ifthere was a chance for me to
like like I don't know, Ijust thank them so much. And yeah,
they gave you life. They did, they did. Oh my gosh,
(43:52):
Kyrie, thinking back to those daysin the hospital and now with you
know the benefit of little age andwisdom, talk about how much Children's Hospital
Los Angeles meant to you and specificallygetting through that time with your family.
I think that like Children's Hospital LosAngeles has done so much for me and
my family, not just like healthwise, but just being there and being
(44:15):
a part of my family in away kind of like being able to take
us in and take care of usemotionally and physically and provide us with like
so much support. And I thinkthat's just really important, especially as like
growing up. You know, itwas definitely like a very weird time for
(44:37):
me. So I think that Children'sHospital is just amazing and all their doctors
and their entire team is amazing.Well, you're amazing. You have double
organs that were you know, transplantedinto you, Kyrie. Now you're living
this healthy, vibrant life and yourbig time going to DC for ad bea
(45:00):
se day. So what was thatlike in front of Congress? It was.
It was very enlightening in a way. I think that just being able
to be in front of such influentialpeople and being able to make a difference
in you know, other people's,other families' lives and being able to provide
a voice for them was very empoweringto me and very powerful in general.
(45:22):
O Kyrie, you are so mature. You've been given the gift of life,
and now you're giving the gift backwhen you become an advocate like this
and and show people, look,I have a double organ transplant. I'm
a survivor. And I'm I'm athriver. And you know, one day
we'll be turning on the TV andthere you'll be just making laws. That
(45:46):
sounds very interesting. If I madea law, that'd be very interesting.
What would your lobby? Hmmm, probably something something good, Yeah, something
good to help people. Yeah, all right, Kyrie, We love you
so much. Thank you so muchfor stopping by today. Thank you.

here all day long. We're gonnabe the L and K Afternoon Show and
the K Evening Show, and it'sall about giving to c HLA Children's Hospital,
Los Angeles. All right, Thesedoctors are rock stars. Doctor Paul
Canter, chief of Cardiology, theHard Institute, co director at CHLA,
(48:00):
and Paul, thank you so muchfor coming on tell us about what you
do from the womb to early adulthood. Really, yeah, that's correct.
I'd like to emphasize for all ofthose who are listening that this has been
a long time coming. We startedwe started doing heart treatments for babies and
children nearly ninety years ago in thecenter part of Los Angeles where the old
(48:23):
Children's Hospital first started out. Wehad a heart clinic start in the nineteen
thirties. We've come a long waysince then. We now have a multifaceted
Height Institute that, as you said, diagnoses and provides treatment for unborn infants
who have been identified to have aheart problem all the way up to children
(48:45):
and young adults up to the ageof twenty six. We continue to provide
multiple different kinds of care for differentareas of specialty that the heart and the
blood vessels require. And so we'revery, very thankful to being able to
develop that over these years for thecommunity in Los Angeles. Doctor Canter,
(49:06):
I have to tell you baby Sawyercame in here to the studio and we
were able to play and cuddle him, and I to tell you he's one
of the most active babies with hisbrand new heart. What a mirror.
He's hard to strap down all thembsall the time. He's a real character.
(49:28):
He really love Lawyer. We seequite a bit of him. And
I've been a real success story andjust wonderful for this family to have a
Thanksgiving with their healthy child at homethis year, you know, considering where
it was last year, I thinkjust received his transplant at that time or
around that time. We're so thankfulfor him to be able to receive a
(49:49):
donor heart and to see him thrivingas a real joy. More than eight
hundred surgeries performed annually on children atCHLA, and you lead that department with
all your specialty programs. I knowthat they learn a lot from you because
you have so much knowledge. Butwhat have you learned from your heart patients.
Honestly, I would say that humilityis the most important lesson that we
(50:13):
as doctors and surgeons, and Iwant to emphasize it. As a very
big team, over five hundred peoplehere, specialists in almost every area,
and learning that we are still learningfrom our patients, We're still learning from
their experience and from their courage isa very humbling thing. You're a miracle
worker and c HLA performs so manymiracles for the first time ever, and
(50:37):
it makes me emotional. I wentto the helipad, and I can think
it was all the people who arelanding on that helipad, and especially when
you are receiving an oregon, whichyou know, to receive one you had
to have someone give one, andthat's right. I just felt that,
(51:00):
I just really felt being up inthe sky like that and seeing that made
me feel the I guess the grandnessof the place because I've always like kind
of worshiped it in my own waysas jewel of the city, but to
go up top where so many emergencylife saving acts are happening, it just
(51:21):
really brought me closer. That's awonderful thing to say, and I think
of it as a beacon of hope. You know, we're right here in
the valley and we've been here along time. We're not going anywhere.
This place is where the buck stops. You know. If children have a
problem that cannot be helped anywhere else, we're going to be there for them.
(51:43):
We never turn anyone away. Wealways try to do everything possible humanly
possible to save lives and to makea difference in the lives of the children,
the precious children that are entrusted toour care, and we take that
incredibly seriously, and we're so thankfulfor the support that we get from the
community, from people like yourself, from everybody around us. You feel nothing
(52:07):
but love when you walk through thedoors here, and I think everybody realizes
that when they come to work everyday, for sure. Paul Cantor,
Chief Division of Cardiology, Heart Institute, co Director, we're so grateful for
you. Thank you so much. You're very kind, and we just want
to give a shout out to allthose families out there. Thank you all
for your support. We couldn't doit without you, for sure. Doctor
(52:30):
Cantor, Oh, does anyone elsethink he sounds like Pierce Brosn and he
did right. Yeah, he doesso much at CHLA. Paul Cantor Cardiology.
I mean, you know, we'vemet Sawyer the Baby. Paul helped
him get a new heart, andhe's so active and thriving, and we
(52:54):
just can't say enough about CHLA.And you can go to Coast one of

so we'll be here. This isour thirteen hour broadcast. We start
at five am and we're going allthe way to six pm. And it's
an honor to be a part ofCHLA and the Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
Family, another miracle here with us, Mommy, Caitlin, Daddy, Robbie,
(53:45):
baby, Sawyer, Sawyer the Warrior. We just met the doctor who
saved your son's life. Doctor PaulCanter told us that the condition Sawyer has
was so rare, only three casesin fifteen years. Remarkable. So take
us to the day you knew thingsjust weren't right. Sure, so he
(54:06):
actually he was sixty years old andhe just spiked a fever and in the
nick you they said, he's fine, he just has a fever. But
then within an hour his heart ratewas in the mid three hundreds, and
so we were transferred to one children'shospital where we were told to kiss him
goodbye. They didn't know what waswrong. And then eventually his heart rate
(54:30):
came out of the three hundreds afterabout three days, and then we were
transferred to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where they told us the only way home
would be a heart transplant. Ohmy gosh, and you waited for that
heart eight months. Eight months,so every day you're just living on glass.
(54:51):
Yeah, they really don't know howhe survived on the heart he was
born with because of the damage fromthe heart attack. He's a strong survivor.
He is a warrior. Yeah,he's got that strength. And you
know, all the patient families we'vetalked to who have had babies starting on
a rough way, their kids growup to be that same fighter. In
(55:15):
all areas of life is what we'vediscovered. And he sure does look happy
and he's so cute. Okay,so tell us about as a family unit.
So you have your firstborn son andthen Sawyer. All your attention,
I'm sure had to be on Sawyer. So how did you guys balance life?
(55:38):
No kid was ever alone, sowe split our time between them,
and COVID restrictions made it so thatbig brother couldn't come in didn't meet till
he was nine months old. Oh, so we would stand outside the hospital
and brother would look up at himthrough the window and say, Hi,
Sawyer. But we really just triedto keep life normal, as normal as
(56:00):
possible for our five year old becausejust because Sawyer's physical heart was in danger,
it didn't mean Hunter's emotional heart wasn'tin danger. So we worked really
really hard to live as normal livesas possible and just living on a prayer.
Yeah for sure. So tell usabout the doctors who saved your son
(56:23):
and really your family. The doctorsat HLA are literally angels on earth.
I know you're not supposed to lovethem, but we do. We consider
them aunts and uncles of both ofour children, and they are the greatest
(56:44):
people that we've ever met. I'mhonored to call them Sawyer's doctors, and
we just love them. We lovethem so much. Oh well, CHLA
brought us together and they're performing miracles. Ever so we're just so grateful that
we get to meet families like yourselfand that we get to see the result
(57:06):
of what all of these doctors andadministration and nurses and everyone there does.
So we're blessed. Thank you,Thank you so much, Baby Sawyer.

at your sister I of course,Bennett is doing great. His heart is
(01:02:21):
looking fantastic. So for those ofyou don't know, my child was born
with four heart defects congenital heart defects, the most severe being a TGA,
which is called transposition of the greatarteries. It's when the two main arteries
that go in the heart are bothin the wrong chamber. And then he
(01:02:43):
also had an a order that waspretty much completely closed. He had a
hole in his heart, and thenhe only had one coronary artery not too
and it was in the wrong place. So he had a major overhaul on
his heart. He's had three heartsurgeries at Children's Hospital Angelus, and you
know, his first heart surgery wasjust such. It was such a remarkable
(01:03:06):
heart surgery. It had never beendone before in the way that they wired
him in that moment. And thething I love, one of the thousand
things I love about HLA, isthat the doctors were able to share that
information with other hospitals and other doctorsacross the country. So should they come,
you know, face to face witha child whose heart looks like then,
(01:03:29):
it don't know how to save him. And he is doing fantastic.
He's just bouncing around. You wouldnever know that this kid has had three
heart surgeries. Never and you know, you hear those stories all the time.
I'm gonna share one quick story.I was at this Christmas convention we
do, you know, I doa lot of Hallmark movies and holiday movies
(01:03:50):
and it's so fun and we dothese Christmas conventions where we get to interact
with people who are big fans ofyou know, Hallmark and all the holiday
movies. And this woman came walkingup to me with her daughter already in
tears, and I was like,Oh, they're going to have a good
story. And so she comes upand she goes So, I just want
(01:04:13):
to tell you a little story aboutbought my daughter thirty one years ago.
She was born premature, twenty twoweeks up in Stanford, and she was
born with a congeneral little heart defectand at the time they had not done
heart surgery on a baby less thantwenty five weeks and a man that was
working on that team, so essentiallythe doctor said to her there's nothing more
(01:04:39):
that we can do. We're sosorry. And this woman, they were
basically saying to her, you haveto say good bye to your child.
And there was this one surgeon whowas on that team, and he stepped
up to the mother and said, listen, I would like to try.
I would like to try and doheart surgery on your daughter. At this
(01:05:02):
point in time, what do wehave to lose, But I think I
can save her life. That surgeonwas doctor Vaughn Starns, and it was
the first heart surgery he ever did. And that was thirty one years ago.
And that young girl, now thirtyone years old was standing in front
of me. Just life saved abeautiful, incredible young woman. And it
(01:05:30):
was just such a beautiful moment. And those are the stories that just it
just makes you really understand how incrediblethat hospital is and all the people that
work in it. It was sucha beautiful moment. We all cry.
We're crying now. Oh my god. I know Nikki Deloache, you are
(01:05:50):
so beautiful inside and out and weare lucky to know you. Thank you
guys. Happy Giving Tuesday point fiveor eighth year. We are raising funds
for c h L, a Children'sHospital Los Angeles, and I have here
in my hand a pre me diaper. It's a tiny diaper. C h
L a home to a level four. Nick you, they see the most
(01:06:14):
critical babies in the world and theytreat them, treat them so well.
So you're giving really matters. Dialpound two fifty on your cell phone,
say the keyword c h l Ato give. Thank you so much.
We just got a really, reallygenerous donation. Amy Dwarty lives in Canoga
Park. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Jamie Lee Curtis is
(01:06:44):
coming up Haaren Giving Tuesday, asshe does every year she shows up.
It's giving and giving. I can'twant to catch up with our friend,
Jamie Lee Curtis. Barren Coast Nextproud to be here with you on Giving
Tuesday. All day long. We'regoing to by the LAK Morning show,
midday show, afternoon and evening show. Let's get right to her Oscar winner,
(01:07:10):
actress, supporter, friend, mommywife, Jamie Lee Curtis, you
created my hand in yours, yourcompany just for c HLA and we are
so grateful. Thank you. Imean, we're going to get to two
very quickly. For those who arelistening, this is tis this season to
(01:07:35):
start giving, and Giving Tuesday isa chance to do something for your local
children's hospital. We here in thecity of angels. We all know what
they do, how they do it, why they do it, and the
fact that they do it regardless ofa patience family's ability to pay, which
(01:07:57):
to me, Ellen k is thegreatest essence as an institution is that they
will not turn a patient away. They are the hospital that people turn to
when people have run out of options, and this is a chance to give
(01:08:17):
to them. And you don't haveto be an Oscar winning actress to get
the same treatment everyone else gets atCCHLA. Everyone who walks through those doors,
not only do they take care ofyour child, they take care of
your entire family, and that isone of the most comforting things to me
as well. Jamie. Yeah,we're at that point where we are all
(01:08:40):
looking for connection. The world feelslike it is very unstable. There are
so many angry people, there areso many hurting people, There's so many
hurting children, and we all feelit, and I know from my own
personal experience. I'm trying to focuswhat can we do, and what can
(01:09:02):
we can do is support the institutionin our own home that deals with families
of every nationality, religion, ethnicity. We are a community. We are
the world. I mean not touse the song. But we are the
world here in Los Angeles, andwe can help critically ill and injured children
(01:09:30):
and help them recover. And theway to do it is you can on
Giving Tuesday give money to Children's Andfor every thirty five dollars or more that
is gifted on Giving Tuesday, mylittle company that I started called My Hand
in Yours. We have these wonderfulwarming puppies from this wonderful company called warm
(01:09:51):
Buddies. And if you make athirty five dollar gift, a child in
the hospital will receive one of Mypaw in Yours puppies. We call it
my paw in Yours and it's awarming puppy. You can warm the little
packet inside it in the microwave andthen it itself is warm. And we
(01:10:15):
know with children who are critically illand injured, warmth and animals and it
does help. And so that isan offering from Children's Hospital. As an
incentive, thirty five dollars donated, one of those little puppies will be given
to one of the patients at thehospital. That's just one way of connecting
(01:10:35):
with your gift going to help immediatelya child. Jamie Lee Curtis, Where
did you get your giving gene?I feel like we are born with it,
all of us. We are bornwith the miracle of life. And
I've always been raised to make surethat my good fortune becomes the good fortune
(01:11:01):
of someone else. It's just it'syou know, it's the pass it on.
How many people have seen those passit on billboards. We are so
grateful for you. We're so gratefulfor our friendship and our partnership and our
partnership because that's what it takes, partnership, and every person in the city
of Los Angeles is a partner inhelping the children at Children's Hospital Los Angeles
(01:11:24):
because we are los Angelina's and Ino'sand we can do it together. Happy
Holidays everyone, God bless you all, and to you too, Jamie Lee
Curtis. Every dollar it does goodin the world. CLA and Coast one

(01:11:47):
K Midday Show, the ellen KAfternoon Show. Maybe you're just about to
go into work. When you leavework, we'll still be here. We
love it. Thanksgiving Tuesday and weraising money for Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
I called the Jewel of the city. How many times have you driven past
her and not needed it? That'sgreat, but just know that when you
(01:12:09):
walk through those doors is a magicalplace. Did I ever tell you that
my mom when she was a babyhad to have ear surgery and they didn't
have insurance and CHLA took care ofmy mom. She still has like the
scar near her ear. And mydad when he was a little boy,
broke his arm and they fixed hisarm. You see that my son,
(01:12:30):
Calvin broke his arm. They puthim back together again, some rods and
some screws and things like that.Shout out to CCHLA. We love you
and we really do. We hopethat you never need them, but when
you do, they come through. Also, one in five kids here in
the Southland have been or are beingtreated at CCHLA. So every dollar counts
(01:12:55):
from five dollars to ten thousand dollarsand more. Lynette Leone of Thousand Oaks,
thank you for your donation, alongwith Christella Hernandez of Southgate, Janelle
Melendez of Canyon Lake, Craig Grahamof Pasadena, so many names here.
Ashley Brooks Sherman, Oaks, verygenerous of you this morning, Patricia Pomposo,
We see you in Rosita, Thankyou so so much. Catherine Steins
(01:13:17):
of upland Nancy Hymen, Simi Valley, Ashley Brooks. We see you in
Sherman Oaks, So Diana Harada,Guadaloupe, California. All right, should
I say her name? I thinkyou have to because this just came in
and this is this just came inbecause we're getting live updates of the giving
that you're giving Rancho Palace Verde's Candaceto Caita ten thousand dollars. Wow,
(01:13:48):
I mean that makes me want tocry. Thank you. Candace Children's Hospital,
Los Angeles home to a Level fournick You, which oversees care for
the most critically ill infants who needspecialized medical intervention for complex neonatal conditions,
(01:14:10):
including extremely premature babiescome Doctor Rachel Chapman, medical director of the nick You Now
Cchla's nick You is ranked second inthe nation according to US News and World
Report. Many of the babies treatedour premature births, so they're premies and
really arrange the most complicated cases inthe south Land and also the nation,
Doctor Chapman. Before our little oneseven enter the world, you're already there
(01:14:34):
for them. Thank you. Yeah, that's absolutely true. I think you
bring up a good point is thatone of the one of the things I
love is that through our Fetal MaternalCenter, were able to often connect and
meet with families before the babies areeven born, so that we're able to
make a plan and families are ableto meet the sub specialists who will be
(01:14:54):
caring for their babies before they evenget to us. Things like that are
so important, and particularly when you'retaking care of babies that have many have
multiple issues and are going to needservices and support for often their lifetime.
Yeah, thank you, doctor RachelChapman. I have to just say real
quickly before we let you go.When my son was born, and thank
(01:15:18):
god he was born healthy, eightpounds three ounces, the doctor came to
me multiple times and said, Ellen, you can put him down. So
we know how important it is tohave that closeness right after birth, no
matter you know, if your baby'sborn underweight, prematurely, you know,
whatever it is, or healthy,it's always great to just be right there.
(01:15:41):
It's so important. The uh yeah, I can't imagine. I can't
imagine. I was also fortunate tohave my baby's full term. But I
can't imagine the situation that our familiesare in, and so we try as
best we can to do all ofthe things to make certain that they can
establish their role as Yeah, that'sall good. Well, thank you,
(01:16:02):
Thank you doctor Chapman, Thank youRachel. We love you so much.
And thanks for coming on with usfor giving Tuesday. Oh you're very welcome.
Thank you for having me. Andit's so easy to give coast one

cell phone and then just say CHLAto donate. Thank you. He's coming
(01:16:26):
up next. He knows firsthand thatmiracles happen every day at Children's Hospital,
Los Angeles. Kimmel on approach hereon the L and K Morning Show,
Kimmel showing up here with us,I'm giving Tuesday, and Jimmy, we
call it the jewel of our city. And you know how special CHLA is.
(01:16:49):
It really is. And as muchas I've done and my wife is
done for Children's Hospital, they dida lot more for us. People probably
know, if they know anything aboutme, that our son has had a
couple of open heart surgeries there andhe's very healthy and he's doing very well.
And none of that would be trueif it wasn't for the great doctors
(01:17:12):
and nurses and technicians and staff atChildren's Hospital LA, which is one of
the great hospitals in the country,if not the world, it truly is.
I've been spending a lot of timewith our little warriors, our patients
and their families. And you know, the thing that I noticed about some
of these super famous, smart, amazing doctors, they don't even know that
(01:17:34):
they are such rock stars, soto speak. They because they're just in
it to help. They don't realize, you know, how much good they
put out into the world and saveso many lives. They're just there grinding
every day. Thank god, thereare people who paid attention in high school
and then studied in college, becausewithout them, we would be we would
(01:17:58):
be in a world of trouble.I mean, they're not just saving lives
like they're they're saving whole families. They're you know, to have something happen
to your your child, or somemoney in your family or someone who's close
to you, it can be devastating, and they turn a lot of very
sad stories into happy ones. AtChildren's Hospital, And not only they do
(01:18:20):
it for kids in LA, butthey train doctors and nurses and send them
all over the country, all overthe world, and so it's it's really,
as you mentioned, a very veryspecial and important place. Oh,
for sure. How's Billy doing. He's doing great. He's really turned into
a little nut. He's six anda half years old now, and he
(01:18:44):
does he's just he is a clown, he really is. My father said,
you know, goes, we gota lot of kids in the family,
between my sister and my brother andme, and he goes. My
father's looking at him when day hegoes, this is the weirdest one?
Is this one's he's the weirdest one. That's a big cup of it.
Billy should wear that with pride.Oh he does, believe me. There's
(01:19:06):
nothing he likes better than to tendto entertain a room. So tell us,
due, do you have any moreholiday surprises coming up? I love
the way Mariah Carey woke you up. Yeah, I mean it's funny because
they shot that for the show.Mariah Carey barged into my bedroom and woke
(01:19:27):
me up in the middle of thenight. And the next day I watched
the video of it, and Iwas like, wow, I don't remember
that part at all. I don'tremember that part of all. I had
my mouthpiece in my dental mouthpiece, and I had to put some clothes on
to go see her out, andI wound up putting on my wife's robe,
not realizing I was wearing a woman'srobe, and so it was a
(01:19:48):
big mess. I hope there areno more surprises like that, but I
can't guarantee it. Oh, Jimmy, Well, we're so honored to have
you on the air with us everyyear for CHLA, and we're going to
raise more money than ever this year. And you know, every time that
you come on and you talk aboutthe miracles that happen at Children's Hospital Los
(01:20:10):
Angeles, the phones ring, thedonations come in, and then there's more
good in the world. Well, what they're doing there, I'm really I
hope that people listening never have togo there. I hope that you don't,
but if you ever do, youwill be amazed at what you see
because they help people of not justtalk show hosts. It's you know,
(01:20:32):
any financial situation, it does notmatter to them. They will take your
kid and they will do their best, which is pretty great to fix your
kid and we need that. Andobviously there's a lot of good ways you
could spend your money, but there'sno better way than this. Yeah,
(01:20:53):
Jimmy, love you so much,Thank you so much. Thank you for
all you do. Ellen. Iknow you. You are at every event
and you do this every year andyou're at the hospital and it really is
amazing and we thank you for that. Oh. Thanks, Jimmy, have

did that and I think a daylater she had nine hour surgery. Oh
(01:25:43):
my gosh. Okay, well, let's talk about the good news. It's
been two years, more than twoyears, Florence has been cancer free thanks
to the great staff at CHLA andall the hope and all of the great
doctors there who made it happen. And now Florence wants to give back.
Yeah, yes she does. Weare so thankful to her oncologist, doctor
(01:26:04):
Tom B. Davidson. She assuredus and helped us navigate the best treatment
option for her. So we arejust celebrating that every day. And Make

her preschool played a big role inour healing journey. So her wish is
to give back to the school andKidspace Museum is partnering with us to refresh

Florence could have wished for anything,Yeah, this little girl was shown so

much abundance at such a young age. She loves to give. She loves
to contribute, and she's a reallyspecial girl. Well she saw what La
did for her, and I'm sureit kind of planted seat in her to
want to give back. And also, you know, look it comes from
you too, Mama. Oh,thank you so much. But you're absolutely

(01:33:46):
Lorenzo. Oh bridget We would loveto hear it. Yes, well,
my daughter and son in law, their youngest one, their son Lorenzo
is a patient in a neurology departmentand have been so good to him.
But not only him, They've beenwonderful to his older sisters Charlotte and Lilia,
(01:34:06):
and they've been going there for fiveyears now. And they felt so
giving this year that they took theirwhole allance for this year and all the
money they raised this year doing arecycling drive in their neighborhood and they bought
two tickets for any two random childrenat Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Charlotte and
(01:34:29):
Lily I have a brother that's apatient at CHLA, and they've been just
so touched and feel so much lovefor everybody at CHLA. They did a
recycling drive to raise money so thatthey could give back. How did the
recycling drive work. They put flyerson each of their neighbor's doors. They
live in an apartment complex, andthey told them that they were raising money
(01:34:55):
for CHLA. They asked everyone ifthey could put out their bottles and cans
every Friday, and they went withtheir mama and they picked them up and
they took them over to the recyclingcenters to catch them in and it went
right into a savings account. Andyes, and this weekend they pulled it
out. They bought two tickets toDisneyland, and they dropped those off at
(01:35:18):
CHLA yesterday and they just wanted togive the tickets to no one in particular,
just as a gift. They mindedto make sure though, that they
were in the neurology department, sincewe were there so often with my grandson.
I know your grandson, Lorenzo isfive years old now and he's going
to be at CCHLA for many years. Oh yes, he is a lifelong
(01:35:39):

Ellen, thank you, Carrie, thank you, Sandy. Let's get
to you Matt LeBlanc. Every yearyou show up here on Giving Tuesday,
and you're such a good friend toCHLA and such a good friend to us.
Oh, well, I'm happy tobe a part of it. I
really am. And congratulations, that'sexcellent what you guys are doing for a
(01:37:31):
really great cause. Well, Matt, we feel about the place the way
you do. We will never stop. And this is the kind of place
CHLA that I would drive by itso many times, Matt and I would
be like, Oh, there's Children'sHospital. And I never knew what was
beyond the doors of CHLA until Ineeded them. I needed them for an
emergency surgery for my sign. Itwas a football injury. And when I
(01:37:55):
walked in there as a mother whowas freaked out, probably more than my
son, I was just so struckby the call I felt and how wow
these this place really truly is sodifferent. Yeah, you know, I
got the I got an opportunity togo when I was working for CBS for
(01:38:16):
on Men with a Plan. Wewent down and we visited some kids and
kind of took a tour and gavesome toys. CBS, you know,
has been a long term partnership they'vehad with Children's Hospital LA, and they've
done some you know, they've createda lot of awareness for the hospital as
well, which is great. ButI got to see firsthand just the kind
(01:38:39):
of care that's given and also justyou know, just the the part of
my friends hand that some kids getdealt in life, and it's just was
so heartbreaking and just anything people cando to help. I mean, it's
such you know, I think sometimeswe make our health for granted, and
(01:39:00):
to see these kids just get sucha disadvantage at the beginning of their lives.
It's just it's really really hard forthe families. And the one thing
I did that stuck out most tome was how the hospital puts the kids
first, not like other hospitals. It's they it's really about the child and
(01:39:21):
what's best for the child, andyou know, they make it really they're
really accommodating and make it easy onthe families as well, like there's a
bed in the room for the kids, for the parent to stay or or
the caregiver, whoever it is,and they just it's just a really inspiring
place. And I was really moved. So I decided to sort of get
(01:39:44):
involved and help wherever I can thosepeople can. If people can go out
of their way a little bit tohelp some kids that are really in need
and a place that really helps them, I say go for it, ye
down. Yeah, but you knowwhat we learned, you know, this
morning talking to everybody's like the rangeof what they do there is just so
(01:40:08):
tremendous. You know, you thinkof a hospital, but you don't really
think about everything they can do andtreat there at this place as at all
Matt. We've talked to four yearold heart yeah, heart transplant, double
double transplant patients and then also brokenarm with pins in it, and and
and all the families and the mothersand the fathers and the doctors and the
specialists that come on and it reallyis truly you know, they win these
(01:40:31):
awards in the nation, they're theworld's best, and we're so fortunate to
have them here and that they opentheir doors to everyone. Yeah, And
like I said earlier, the reallythe most impressive thing is how they put
the kids first. They're fantastic.I can't say enough good things about the
doctors there, and just even likethe nursing staff, they're just care you
(01:40:53):
know. It's not a place whereit's like oh yeah, everybody just seems
to be communicating on a team. And I witnessed it firsthand when I was
on When I was on the floorand I was looking at some of these
some of these kids that really neededoutstanding care, and boy, they were
getting it. The care is outstanding. Matt LeBlanc with us on Giving Tuesday.
(01:41:14):
We can keep you forever. Icould just like sit here and listen
to your voice. He's got togo, and he's got to go hunt
down the people. Yeah, I'mcoming. I'm coming for you. Thank
you, Matt Levelank. Lots oflove to you. Thank you, Thanks
for the blessing of what you do. Thanks you, guys. Keep up
the great work. I really appreciateit, and I know the hospital does
(01:41:35):
too, So thank you so much. Thank you, and you can give
right now. Coast one of threefive dot com slash c H station on

to talk about this puppy in mylap for so long. Let's do that.

Jamie Lee Curtis. This is hercreation from her company, My Hand in

so it's a it's like a warmhug. Donate thirty five dollars or more.
We're not limiting you to thirty fivedollars, but a minimum thirty five
dollars donation and a child at COCHLAwill receive the mypaw in Yours puppy.

Hand in Yours dot Com. Okay, I am being flagged by Ellen.
Okay, they're ready for us.They have another very special guest. This
is a patient who has such arare condition diagnosed in utero. Now he's
sixteen. To hear this story,Ellen, Thanks Carry, Thanks Sandy.
(01:43:02):
We are here with Loyola high schooljunior and CHLA Ambassador. Cayden, you're
sixteen years old. Tell us howand why you got involved with CHLA.
Well, the hospital is super importantto me because when I was there and
another kids are there, they havea whole team working with you, like
(01:43:24):
nurses, specialists, and doctors, and they make the hospital experience a fun
place for their patients. And Kayden, you were born a patient. Basically,
I had surgery at four days oldand then they successfully removed the tumor,
and then I began four rounds ofchemotherapy at three months old. And
(01:43:49):
look at you now you're sixteen,You're healthy, you're giving back to the
hospital. Yep, your mam mustbe so proud of you. Candice,
way to go, mom. Thankyou. Ellen. I know you understand
too. I think your son hadan experience at Children's Hospital, so I'm
sure you know what a special place. Yeah, ours was emergency surgery,
(01:44:11):
but yeah, we fell in lovewith that place that second we walk through
the er, which is a reallyweird thing to say. You know,
you're there, you're kind of traumatized, and then you just all of a
sudden feel calm, And I knowthat's how you felt. Yeah. You
know, my husband and I usedto say, you never want to be
there, but if you need tobe at a hospital, you don't want
to be anywhere else. And thiswas super rare of this fast growing tumor
(01:44:33):
while in utero. So how didthat, like, at what stage of
pregnancy were you? I was justunder you know, four months pregnancy,
and that's usually when they sort ofyou know, deliver the news of your
child's gender, and they discovered asmall sort of tumor. They weren't sure
(01:44:56):
what it was. We began seeingspecialists at that time and kind of continued
monitoring it. We were lucky enoughto find Children's Hospital with that multidisciplinary team
that just was such a lifeline forus. Well, Caden, sounds amazing.
How are you liking Loyola? Yeah, so far. I like it
a lot, like the experience andlike all like the kids. It's really
(01:45:21):
fun and like you feel like you'rea part of everyone's there's like a part
of one like big community. Yeah. Well, Cayden and Candace, thanks
for all you're doing for Chla.Thank you for coming on. We know
that head and neck tarratomas occur veryrarely, and Cayden you are a survivor.
You are the lucky one out offorty to fifty thousand births, and
(01:45:44):
you got it and you've survived it, and you are showing others that there's
something to hope for. Thank you, Thank you, Ellen, Thank you
for all you do for hospital aswell. Hier good afternoon. It's Carrie
you Steal along with Sandy Stick thewhole crew here on Tuesday, Global Day
of Giving Back. I started thinking, Sandy, maybe we should give the
backstory about Giving Tuesday. We keeptalking about it. Maybe people don't know
(01:46:08):
where it all began. It actuallybegan in twenty twelve, just a real
simple idea, a day to encouragepeople to do good. And over the
past ten plus years now it's kindof grown into this global movement. It's
inspiring hundreds of millions of people, inspiring them to give and collaborate and celebrate
generosity. Yeah, so we're allhere today raising funds and awareness for a
(01:46:29):
Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Thisis the eighth year for US, Yes,
and what an honor to be collaboratingwith Children's Hospital Los Angeles. And
we here at Coast one three pointfive, all led by Ellen k who
wasn't going to try to get myattention. She's got Chris Pine on the
line and we'd love to hear fromhim. Take it away, Ellen here
on Giving Tuesday. Thank you,Carrie, thank you, Sandy, thank
you chris Pine. Thanks so muchfor having me. Oh no, thank
(01:46:53):
you. I just want to say, I've never seen so much publicity for
facial hair and short shorts as youhave. I've been receiving. No,
it's ridiculous. Some people do politics, I do. I do short shorts.
I love your answer. They're shorts, They're supposed to be short.
That's so great. I know.Come on and thank you for giving us
(01:47:15):
wish. We all get to seeit over the holiday break and here we
are in Giving Tuesday, so it'slike a game watching with all those hidden
Easter eggs. Yeah, there's alot of fun stuff in there. And
you know, it's a hundred yearone hundred years of Disney, and I
love the fact that it's all aboutwishes and wishing on a star and there's
(01:47:36):
a lot of fun stuff in therefor the Disney diehard. Do you know
every morning as I'm driving to workin the dark, there's always like that
big bright North star. I alwaysmake a wish like just for you.
I always every morning I make awish like I can't it's stuck in my
mind. So I believe in that. Do you do that? Yeah,
I mean I definitely. Like abuddy of mine has a house out in
(01:48:00):
the desert where you can really reallysee the sky, and when you're out
there, it's incredible when you lookup and you see the shooting stars and
satellites passing by, and you know, sometimes there's a really bright planet,
and just to realize how how smallwe are in this you know, infinite
infinite universe, it's pretty uh,pretty special. I do think, you
(01:48:25):
know, either wishing on a staror just kind of meditating on the great
expanse and the great mystery of itall is a nice way to relativize things.
And thank you for all you dofor Children's Hospital, LA You're you
always come through, and I justthink that, you know, the best
thing about any relationship is just showingup for each other, and we are
(01:48:47):
so grateful for you. Absolutely.I mean, I think it's nice to
know that no matter who you are, where you come from, there's certain
things that I think can unite usand the health and well being and safety
and joy of children is certainly away that we can all come together.
(01:49:08):
Yes, I was just there.Have you ever been up on the helipad.
Yeah, they've invited me up onthe helopath But usually when I go,
I'm gonna I'm gonna time constraintuse Igot to read. I got to
read books to kids. So it'seither reading or heliport. So I went
up on the helipad. It wasit was just amazing. You think of
(01:49:29):
all the life saving landings that havehappened there. And then went to the
nick you and they showed me aPremie diaper and it was so tiny and
there's so much love there in thebaby cuddlers, and then I hung out
with the therapy dogs. I kindof did the gauntlet of everything that they
had to offer and some things Ihad never done before. And now I
love the place even more, ifthat's even possible. Yeah, it's just
(01:49:54):
extraordinary what they're able to do,and all of the life saving procedures and
the the difficult cases that they get, and the fact that they treat not
only all of Los Angeles but someof the hardest cases in the country.
It's a really, really wonderful place. Every time I go there, you
know, I think I react sensitivelyto the you know, you know that
(01:50:17):
kids are going through hard stuff,so it can be pretty emotional. But
to see the overwhelming joy and positivityof the people that work there, I
mean, they are really the warriorswe should we should be patting on the
back because they're in there day inand day out. Well, now I
can bring your Disney character into lifeand walk the halls, you know,
(01:50:40):
and give them a wish live.Yeah, yeah, I'll I'll work on
dying my go to and fluffing thoseeyebrows, all right. Chris, Well,
thank you so much. Thanks forbeing here on Giving Tuesday. I
know you're there for the kids allthe time. My pleasure. Thank you
again for all the work that youdo. And everybody out there, if
(01:51:02):
you have any money to spare, this is about the best thing you can
do between children and animals. Ithink it's a no brainer. They need
all the love and all the supportthat we can give. And if you
have a couple extra dollars to helpthe great people down at CHLA do what
they do, please do. It'sthe time of year to do it and
you'll be better for it, sowell said lots of love to you,
(01:51:26):
Chris, all right back at youfree steal along with Sandy Steck and of
course Ellen Kay and the morning crewin the next studio and Sandy. I
just saw Kyrie walk in. Haveyou met Kyrie. I haven't had a
chance to meet her, but Ihave heard her story. Incredible, the
maturity level, the inspiration. She'sso composed. And that's the thing about
(01:51:46):
patient stories too. Some of thesekids who are at CHLA from a very
young age, they don't know anydifferent, so they have a different life
experience and a much broader perspective onreally what matters in life. Kyrie definitely
does. And you're going to hearher story. I see them getting Ellen's
ready. Okay, Well, lookwho's here on Giving Tuesday? Our good
(01:52:09):
friend who we haven't seen for fouryears. I guess you've been too busy.
But Kyrie is back. Kyrie, welcome, Hi, nice to see
you again. We saw you whenyou were eleven and now you're fifteen.
Yes, and we hear you're stillsassy, i'd hope so. Oh yes.
Now, Kyrie, as you mayrecall, was a sassy young thing
(01:52:31):
who had a rare double organ transplantprocedure, a new kidney and a new
liver. How are they treating younow? They're very good. I go
to my nephrologist or my kidney specialistonce a month and my livery team once
a year, so they're very good. And we know that you named your
(01:52:51):
kidney and your liver that have beentransplanted into your body another part of you.
Could you refresh us on those names? Yes, I named my kidney
after my apologists. I named itDiva, okay, yeah. And then
my my liver, I named itGeorge, after my my liver specialist.
(01:53:15):
Yeah, Diva and George. Andwhen you are hanging out with your other
teen friends, do you feel likea normal teen? Last time I saw
you were just a little kid.Yeah, I think so. I think
it's like it's definitely like a bigchange for me from like going from like
weekly hospital visits to like being ableto hang out with my friends and everything.
(01:53:36):
So I think it's definitely like areally big positive change in my life.
And bless the donors, you know, I mean really life saving donors.
I'm so grateful for them. II I actually often think about them.
I think like, wow, likeif if there was a chance for
(01:53:57):
me to like like, I don'tknow, I just think them so much,
and yeah, they gave you life. They did, they did.
Oh my gosh, Kyrie, thinkingback to those days in the hospital and
now with you know the benefit oflittle age and wisdom, talk about how
much Children's Hospital Los Angeles meant toyou and specifically getting through that time with
(01:54:17):
your family. I think that likeChildren's Hospital Los Angeles has done so much
for me and my family, notjust like health wise, but just being
there and being a part of myfamily in a way kind of like being
able to take us in and takecare of us emotionally and physically and provide
(01:54:41):
us with like so much support. And I think that's just really important,
especially as like growing up, youknow, it was definitely like a very
weird time for me. So Ithink that Children's Hospital is just amazing and
all their doctors and their entire teamis amazing. Well, you're amazing.
(01:55:01):
You have double organs that were youknow, transplanted into you, Kyrie.
Now you're living this healthy, vibrantlife and your big time going to d
C for advocacy day. So whatwas that like in front of Congress.
It was. It was very enlighteningin a way. I think that just
being able to be in front ofsuch influential people and being able to make
(01:55:26):
a difference in you know, otherpeople's, other families' lives and being able
to provide a voice for them wasvery empowering to me and very powerful in
general. Oh, Kyrie, youare so mature. You've been given the
gift of life, and now you'regiving the gift back when you become an
advocate like this and show people, look, I have a double organ transplant,
(01:55:49):
I'm a survivor, and I'm athriver. And you know, one
day we'll be turning on the TVand there you'll be just making laws.
That sounds very interesting. If Imade a lot, that'd be very interesting.
What would your lot be? Hmmm? Probably something something good? Yeah,
(01:56:13):
something good to help people. Yeah, all right, Kyrie, we
love you so much. Thank youso much for stopping by today. Thank
you, it was very nice totalk to you. Guys. Three point
five carries you. You can't helpit feel good, right, Sandy?
On Giving Tuesday, When you hearall these stories and people make incredible donations,
make a life changing impact, givea gift to the young patients at
(01:56:34):
CHLA, and I know we've gottena couple of very impressive donations. Kerry,
we just got this email and Iactually misread it because there was one
more zero than I thought there was. Sienna Morris of Los Angeles Jared Dowd
of Sherman Oaks each donated ten thousanddollars. Oh my goodness, thank you,
thank you so much. Gosh,do what you can to change a
(01:56:55):
child's life forever. It's gonna makeyou feel good. You are going to
save a life. And speaking ofchildren, Ellen's going to talk to her
child although he's a man now,and I just love this kid. He
is the reason and inspiration that we'reeight years deep in this Giving Tuesday,
raising funds and awareness for Children's Hospitalof Los Angeles. Harry, Sandy,
love you so much. Giving Tuesday. It's all about love and giving and
(01:57:20):
we would not be doing this showall day if it weren't for the reason
we're doing this My boy, myson, Calvin. Hello, Mom,
how you doing? Welcome're good tobe here, Calvin? Eight years?
Can you believe it already? Yeah? Eight years? I mean I feel
like every year we do it.I see it in a different light,
(01:57:43):
but the one constant is I'm justvery grateful to be doing it. I'm
grateful it's happening. I'm very gratefulfor Children's Hospital especially, it's a wonderful
place. Well, you know,Calvin, it all started with your broken
elbow that gave birth to this Coastbroadcast all day for Giving Tuesday. We
were in the hospital. You hademergency surgery. It was scary. Any
surgery is scary. And while wewere in there, we saw, we
(01:58:06):
saw serious stuff and I just don'twant to thank you for breaking your elbow.
But because of that, thank godit wasn't a life threatening situation.
We saw how much good CHLA doesfor the entire community. And then you
know, every year now you've comeback wherever you are in the world,
(01:58:29):
and you know, really gotten thisstarted. Yeah, no, And it's
it's funny to see something that waslike, you know, so bad at
the time, but you know,it turned out to be a very good
thing. And I look at myinjury. Mine compared to what else is
happening at CCHLA, mine is veryvery not too bad, you know,
but with the stuff they treat thereis I mean it's life and death.
(01:58:55):
But that's why it's just such awonderful place. And I'm, like I
said before, very happy to bea part of it and being a part
of all the good that they dothere because it's just a really special place.
Yeah. I know, you werejust a teenager when you were first
at CHLA and now you are aman, and things changed, you know,
(01:59:15):
in perspective as the years go on. I know, we toured the
hospital recently and we saw corners andparts of the hospital we'd never seen before,
and it really was emotional for meto see, like the helipad for
instance, that is some serious stufflanding on that rooftop, and CLA is
offer so much hope for people whoare critically injured or in really really a
(01:59:42):
bad way waiting for transplants. Youknow, we've had double transplant patients on
who go on to lead these beautiful, normal lives because of CHLA. Yeah.
Well, and another thing the tourof those could to see was all
of the you know, like thelibrary and the toy room and stuff like
that. And you realize that anyonecan, i mean, no matter how
much you can help, you canvolunteer, you can donate even just a
(02:00:04):
little amount, and you realize thatyou may seem I mean, you know,
maybe volunteering there once might seem likenot a lot, But to those
kids and to everyone, it is. It's the world, it really is.
Yeah, you know. In caseyou're just tuning in, this is
my son Calvin. Yes, hehas a man voice, and he is
(02:00:24):
here on Giving Tuesday. We areraising money for c CHLA all day long.
We'll be here on this broadcast. And Calvin, we know that you
have to get off to school tofinish this first quarter. But I just
I'm just so grateful that number one, you're my son. I love you
so much, but also that youare the reason and a part of this
(02:00:45):
Giving Tuesday that you always come backto give. I'm just happy to be
a part of c HLA. It'sa great place, great people, and
let's have a great Giving Tuesday andyou can give right now. Coast one

whatever. Yeah, it doubles fromfour to five. Thank you squirrelled School's
first federal credit Union. We'll betalking to the pres of that coming up.
Jessica got an email. This isso cool. It's from him Bomba.
He said, good morning. Athought on combining you're giving Tuesday at
(02:03:05):
CHLA and last week's theme of whois a fountain? So we talked about
on the morning show, who's yourfountain and who's your drain in terms of
your fountain fills you up, yourdrain kind of sucks your life. Yes,
yeah, came from Travis Kelsey's coach. He said, stop being the
drain, you know, beat thefountain. So who is your fountain?
Well, CHLA is a fountain. So Tim Bomba writes, at CCHLA,
(02:03:28):
donate blood, give blide, theyneed it. Walking through those halls,
you will see kids in their familiesgoing through the unimaginable. These are the
people whose strength is a reminder tothe rest of us. Tim from Venice
Beach Bamba own negative donor. Soyeah, they need blood as well.
Thank you for giving anything everything helps. Special guests coming up next. He's
(02:03:56):
a friend. It's Your Hint withDylan k Afternoon Show and it's Coast one
of three point five. Our guestis a friend. He's the host of
the Oscars. You see him everynight Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC. Jimmy
Kimmel, your family knows firsthand thatCHLA is a magical place. It really
(02:04:23):
is. And as much as I'vedone and my wife has done for Children's
Hospital, they did a lot morefor us. People probably know, if
they know anything about me, thatour son has had a couple of open
heart surgeries there and he's very healthyand he's doing very well. And none
of that would be true if itwasn't for the great doctors and nurses and
(02:04:45):
technicians and staff at Children's Hospital LA, which is one of the great hospitals
in the country, if not theworld. It truly is. I've been
spending a lot of time with ourlittle warriors, our patients and their families.
And you know, the thing thatI notice about some of these super
famous, smart, amazing doctors, they don't even know that they are such
(02:05:10):
rock stars, so to speak. They because they're just in it to help.
They don't realize, you know, how much good they put out into
the world and save so many lives. They're just there grinding every day.
Thank god, there are people whopaid attention in high school and then studied
in college, because without them wewould be we would be in a world
(02:05:30):
of trouble. I mean, they'renot just saving lives like they're they're saving
whole families. They're you know,to have something happen to your your child,
or some money in your family orsomeone who's close to you. It
can be devastating. And they turna lot of very sad stories into happy
ones at Children's Hospital. And notonly they do it for kids in LA,
(02:05:54):
but they train doctors and nurses andsend them all over the country,
all over the world, and soit's really, as you mentioned, a
very very special and important place.Oh for sure, how's Billy doing.
He's doing great. He's really turnedinto a little nut. He's six and
a half years old now, andhe does. He's just he is a
(02:06:17):
clown. He really is. Myfather said, you know, because we
got a lot of kids in thefamily, between my sister and my brother
and me, and he goes,my father's looking at him when day he
goes, this is the weirdest one. Is this one's he's the weirdest one.
That's a big cup of it.Billy should wear that with pride.
(02:06:38):
Oh, he does, believe me. There's nothing he likes better than to
tend to entertain a room. Sotell us, dude, do you have
any more holiday surprises coming up?I love the way Mariah Carey woke you
up. Yeah. I mean it'sfunny because they shot that for the show.
Mariah Carey barged into my bedroom andwoke me up in the middle.
(02:07:00):
And the next day I watched thevideo of it and I was like,
wow, I don't remember that partat all. I don't remember that part
of all. I had my mouthpiecein my dental mouthpiece, and I had
to put some clothes on to gosee her out, and I wound up
putting on my wife's robe, notrealizing I was wearing a woman's robe,
and so it was a big mess. I hope there are no more surprises
(02:07:23):
like that, but I can't guaranteeit. Oh, Jimmy, Well,
we are so honored to have youon the air with us every year for
CCHLA, and we're going to raisemore money than ever this year. And
you know, every time that youcome on and you talk about the miracles
that happen at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, the phones ring, the donations come
(02:07:45):
in, and then there's more goodin the world. Well, what they're
doing there, I'm really I hopethat people listening never have to go there.
I hope that you don't, butif you ever do, you will
be amazed at what you see becausethey help people of not just talk show
hosts. It's you know, anyfinancial situation, it does not matter to
(02:08:09):
them. They will take your kidand they will do their best, which
is pretty great to fix your kid, and we need that. And obviously
there's a lot of good ways youcould spend your money, but there's no
better way than this. Yeah,Jimmy, love you so much, Thank
you so much. Thank you forall you do. Ellen. I know
you're you are at every event andyou do this every year and you're at
(02:08:35):
the hospital and it really is amazing, and we thank you for that.
Thanks Jimmy, have a good one, you too, have a great one.
Take care, it's been a greatday. Coast one three five dot

(02:08:56):
Eleven years old, orthopatient born withamniotic band syndrome. That's a difference,
but you're also a gifted singer andyou look amazing and healthy and happy.
Welcome, Hello, thank you, well, thank you for coming to
tell your story of first of allbeing diagnosed and then being healed with hope.
(02:09:16):
So when I was born, myparents they didn't know what happened,
what I was born with, Sothe doctors didn't know either. So doctor
Lightdale she recommended CHLA. Yeah, because they can. They take all the
cases no one else knows what todo about, and then they find the
(02:09:39):
solution. What a magical place. And so tell us about your journey through,
you know, finding out what youhad and then how to deal with
it. Well, I've basically knownall of my life yeah. So my
parents if I needed something that Icouldn't reach and people would try to get
it from me, they were like, no, no, no, just
let her do it. So I'veI've learned how to become like independent.
(02:10:01):
Oh nice, like grabbing stuff.Yeah, of course. And now that
you're eleven, oh my gosh, you're gonna be teenager pretty soon. How
is school and life? Oh it'sawesome. School, I really like it,
except for math, say your sister, math is okay, but it's
(02:10:24):
in my first period, so Ijust get that out of the way.
Yeah that's good. That's good. What do you want to be when you
grow up? I want to beon Broadway. Bay is so amazing.
Tell us about your singing career sofar. Well, I've basically sang ever
since I popped out of the womb. I'm mostly just sang gibberish. I'm
(02:10:46):
just like opera. My parents alwaysare like, oh my god, really,
you just sing about anything like mashedpotatoes. I really like mashed potatoes.
Potatoes are good. Did you eversing about your condition? Oh?
I haven't ever sung about that.Well I think that should be your next
song. Yeah. Yeah, Well, we are loving getting to know you.
(02:11:13):
And getting to know so many patientsand gifted doctors and the staff at
CHLA. And here on Giving Tuesday. This is very special. This is
from my paw and yours. Andwhen someone gives thirty five dollars or more,
a child will have this soft puppyput in their arms. Oh it's
so awesome, isn't that cool?Yeah? Yeah, So tell us about
(02:11:37):
some of the experiences that you've hadat CHLA. They're very comforting, aren't
they. Yes, there's so manycolors and like there's like little animals and
colors and it's so awesome. Itmakes me so happy. Not like any
other scary doctors. Those are weird. I really like the Catch program.
(02:12:00):
They can tell us about Catch.Yes, the Catch program is where they
just have a lot of people withlike differences like me, and so we
just all get together. We havefun. There's lots of arts and crafts
too. Oh that's so good.Well, Melody here with us. Eleven
years old. You've basically grown upas a part of CHLA, and it's
(02:12:20):
so good to have you here becausenow you're giving back. That's awesome.
That fills our hearts. Thank you. Oh, you're welcome. You're a
great singer. Do you know howthe Coast jingle sounds? Yes? Okay,
can you sing a press of course? Yeah? Coast one oh three

(02:12:41):
head. Well, we benefit.Thank you so much. Melody another great
example of someone who's thriving after beingtreated at CCHLA on our way to Broadway.
Oh my gosh, can't wait towatch her on stage. And you
can give Coast one of three fivedot com slash CHLA k morning show in

(02:13:28):
for being here today with us.We're here all day. Tell us about
your experience with CHLA. H Well, thankfully, I haven't you know knock
on Wood had to use chl Aservices. As a patient in high school,
I actually went to Camp CHLA.I'm not sure how many viewers are
(02:13:52):
aware of this, but Camp CHLAis a five day immersive camp in the
summer for high school students thinking aboutgoing into the healthcare field. This must
have been, yeah, this musthave been over fifteen years ago, and
it was one of the most incredibleexperiences I ever got to have. You
(02:14:15):
know, we were able to actuallytour some of the ICUs to see you
know, and if you've never beenin an ICU before, it can be
pretty brutal. You know, youhave to steal yourself because you're you're walking
into possibly one of the worst momentsof a parent's life. And yet these
(02:14:35):
I remember how generous the parents andthe doctors were with allowing us to see
up close and personal what the doctorsand nurses at COCHLA were able to do.
And we were able to get handson experience in some you know,
robotics in CPR. And so whatI would say for this Giving Tuesday is
(02:14:58):
please, of course donate, butalso give up your mind. That was
the experience that I took away fromthat is that even if you know,
you don't go into the health carefield, you're not associated with the health
care Filter's so many just little thingsthat you can learn about how to give
to someone, give to even theparents who are just going through so much
(02:15:22):
at the hospital that you know youdon't know what someone needs until you ask.
What a beautiful life lesson you havelearned and shared with us. Thank
you? Yeah, I just wantI felt when you know when you were
going to be going there all day. I tell you know, I just
brought back so many wonderful experiences, and you know, I prayed that the
(02:15:46):
patients that I was able to seethere that they all had happy endings.
But I know that they were inthe best care possible. Definitely are Selly.
Thank you, You're an angel.Thank you so much. Giving Tuesday

Thank you for matching every dollar thatwe bring in. Is so generous of
you. And you know the impactyour money is making. Oh yeah,
I do. I know firsthand.I went to the event called Walking Play
(02:17:20):
Los Angeles, and I ran intoit. If somebody hadn't seen a long
time a childhood friend and I askedhim, I said, why was he
there? And he said that hisdaughter was born with a rare medical challenge
and the only facts that could helpthem with CHLA. And if you met
her today, she was smiling andplaying just like every kid should have the
opportunity to So you're literally, whenyou're supporting Giving Tuesday, you're literally saving
(02:17:45):
lives and family. And Kevin, what's your message to somebody maybe driving right
now considering giving somewhere for this holidayseason? Why CHLA? Well, CHLA
treats some of the rarest and mostcomplex injuries and illnesses, a brain tumors,
complex heart defects, and childhood cancers. So they have the experts that
(02:18:05):
tree kids and their families, andthey put the family at the center of
everything that they do. Can youimagine you have a child who's born with
something that you don't know how tofix yourself. They help to alleviate that
pain and burden by creating a safespace not only for the child, but
for the family to stay locally,to visit regularly. I've gone to visit
(02:18:28):
many locations, and let me justsay it's I've been in many hospitals.
It's nothing like a children's hospital.It's a very different magical play. And
we see here this holiday season, school's first Federal Credit Union giving members a
special butterfly plush when you donate tendollars or more to CCHLA. That is
another generous thing you're doing and weappreciate you. We're so grateful for you.
(02:18:50):
Kevin. Yes, yeah, Soit's called the Bugby Butterfly campaign,
and so for maybe folks don't allknow, but the logo for CSLA is
a butterfly, and so we've turnedthat logo into a flush toy and so
you can donate ten dollars and we'llgive you that plush toy any of our
Los Angeles, San Bernardino, andRiverside County branches. And we also got
(02:19:13):
eight other credit unions to support allhere in the southern California area. How
cool is that, Kevin. Weknow that Schools First is rooted in the
philosophy of giving and helping people thrive. Is that what drew you to them?
Or did you become this way whenyou started working there? No,
that's exactly what drew me to schoolsFirst. I mean everyone, I'm sure
(02:19:33):
everybody that's listening right now has goneto school and there was somebody at that
school that did something special for them. It might have been a teacher,
it might have been a coach,it might have been a janitorial worker.
And the fact that schools saved mylife. I grew up in the inner
city here in Inglewood, California. The opportunity to help school employees to fulfill
(02:19:54):
their financial dreams is what drew meto schools first, and I've been doing
it for ten years now. I'mvery proud of the work that we do
and our ability to help our membersachieve their financial goals. Kevin, thank
you so much from the of allof our hearts. Thank you, and
thank you, and I appreciate you. Having a happy holidays everyone, Yeah,

for the morning show in the afternoon, and now we're bringing you home after
(02:21:03):
school. Wow. I thought thatwhen we were in the cars afternoon we
heard you this morning, I thought, how that's a long day. No,
yeah, it is a long day, but it's a great day.
It's giving Tuesday, Yes, itis good and Tuesday. So we were
calling because my daughter wanted to tellyou that she had open heart surgery at
CCHLA when she was six months old. Well, put her on go ahead.
(02:21:24):
Hello, Meila, you're in fifthgrade now, but you had open
heart surgery as a baby. Doyou have a scar? Yeah? I
call my star, my superstar star. Oh you are a superstar, Meila.
That's so great. We talked toyou before, just in the morning,
maybe on the Q and A.I had no idea that you had
had open heart surgery at HLA.Yep, I did. Does your mommy
(02:21:50):
tell you about it about those days? Yes, I've told her it was
it was a scary time, butHLA definitely made a huge difference, and
our follow up here has been wonderfuland she will require some more surgeries in
the future, but that they madethat otherwise very scary experience. You know,
Actually it was an enjoyable time atthe hospital. It was at the
(02:22:13):
care that we received was amazing andthe support staff and you know, she
was in and out in three days, which is unbelievable for open art surgery,
but it was it was because ofthe team that we had and you're
so blessed to have to take careof her with who's as the baby.
ATLA, they performed more than eighthundred heart surgeries every year on patients all
around the country and the world, and Meela, you're one of them with
(02:22:35):
that superstar scar. Yes, andwe're very thankful to doctor Starns. There
was doctor von Starns who did hersurgery, and she has a condition called
technology of below and so we're verythankful to doctor Starnes and his scheme for
the work that they did so manyyears ago. Yeah, Jimmy Kimmel was
just on with us talking about Starns. This guy's a rock star, had
his Yeah, Jimmy Kimmel's son hasthe same condition that Neila has and yeah
(02:23:00):
he had Starns as well, andso yeah, he's an amazing, amazing
person. There are a lot ofhealthy, beating hearts out there because of
c h l A and Starns.Yes, so we just learned to Sharah
how grateful we are with your listenersand with KHLA. We're just so grateful
for all they did for our family. Ah, we're grateful you're listening and
(02:23:22):
that you could call in and connect. Thank you guys for all this you

Sawyer the Warrior, sixteen months crawlingall over our studio, got a new
(02:24:07):
heart eight months ago. He waitedfor eight months. Sawyer the Warrior a
bouncy boy. He'll hear him herein the studio. But that wasn't always
the case. Was it, Mommy, Caylene, take us back to that
day. Sure, so he actuallyhe was sixty years old and he just
(02:24:30):
spiked a fever and in the nickyou they said, he's fine, he
just has a fever. But thenwithin an hour his heart rate was in
the mid three hundreds, and sowe were transferred to one children's hospital where
we were told to kiss him goodbye. They didn't know what was wrong.
And then eventually his heart rate cameout of the three hundreds after about three
(02:24:54):
days, and then we were transferredto Children's Hospital Los Angeles, where they
told us the only way home wouldbe a heart transplant. Oh my gosh,
and you waited for that heart eightmonths. Eight months, so every
day you're just living on glass.Yeah, they really don't know how he
(02:25:15):
survived on the heart he was bornwith because of the damage from the heart
attack. He's a strong survivor.He is a warrior. Yeah, he's
got that strength. And you know, all the patient families we've talked to
who have had babies starting on arough way, their kids grow up to
be that same fighter in all areasof life. Is what we've discovered.
(02:25:39):
And he sure does look happy andhe's so cute. Okay, So tell
us about as a family unit.So you have your firstborn son and then
Sawyer. All your attention, I'msure had to be on Sawyer. So
how did you guys balance life?No kid was ever alone, so we
(02:26:03):
split our time between them, andCOVID restrictions made it so that big brother
couldn't come in. They didn't meettill he was nine months old, so
we would stand outside the hospital andbrother would look up at him through the
window and say, Hi, Sawyer. But we really just tried to keep
life normal, as normal as possiblefor our five year old because just because
(02:26:26):
Sawyer's physical heart was in danger,it didn't mean Hunter's emotional heart wasn't in
danger. So we worked really reallyhard to live as normal lives as possible
and just living on a prayer.Yeah for sure. So tell us about
the doctors who saved your son andreally your family. The doctors at HLA
(02:26:50):
are literally angels on earth. Iknow you're not supposed to love them,
but we do. We consider themaunts and uncle of our both of our
children, and they are the greatestpeople that we've ever met. I'm honored
to call them Sawyer's doctors and wejust love them. We love them so
(02:27:15):
much. Well, CHLA brought ustogether and they're performing miracles every day.
So we're just so grateful that weget to meet families like yourself and that

you give every dollar to CHLA.My hand in yours and you've already raised
(02:32:20):
a million dollars. I mean we'regoing to get to two very quickly.
For those who are listening, thisis tis this season to start giving,
and Giving Tuesday is a chance todo something for your local children's hospital.
(02:32:41):
We here in the city of Angels, We all know what they do,
how they do it, why theydo it, and the fact that they
do it regardless of a patient's family'sability to pay, which to me,
ellen k is the greatest essence asan institution, is that they will not
(02:33:03):
turn a patient away. They arethe hospital that people turn to when people
have run out of options, andthis is a chance to give to them.
And you don't have to be anOscar winning actress to get the same
treatment everyone else gets at CCHLA.Everyone who walks through those doors, not
only do they take care of yourchild, they take care of your entire
(02:33:26):
family. And that is one ofthe most comforting things to me as well.
Jamie. Yeah, we're at thatpoint where we are all looking for
connection. The world feels like itis very unstable. There are so many
angry people, there are so manyhurting people, there's so many hurting children,
(02:33:48):
and we all feel it, andI know from my own personal experience.
I'm trying to focus what can wedo, and what can we can
do is support the institution in ourown home that deals with families of every
nationality, religion, ethnicity. Weare a community. We are the world.
(02:34:13):
I mean not to use the song, but we are the world here
in Los Angeles, and we canhelp critically ill and injured children and help
them recover. And the way todo it is you can on Giving Tuesday
give money to children's and for everythirty five dollars or more that is gifted
(02:34:37):
on Giving Tuesday, my little companythat I started called My Hand in Yours
we have these wonderful warming puppies fromthis wonderful company called warm Buddies. And
if you make a thirty five dollargift, a child in the hospital will
receive one of My Paw in Yourspuppies. We call it my paw and
(02:35:00):
it's a warmingpy. You can warmthe little packet inside it in the microwave
and then itself is warm. Andwe know with children who are critically ill
and injured, warmth and animals andit does help. And so that is
an offering from Children's Hospital. Asan incentive, thirty five dollars donated one
(02:35:24):
of those little puppies will be givento one of the patients at the hospital.
That's just one way of connecting withyour gift going to help immediately a
child. Jamie Lee Curtis, wheredid you get your giving gene? I
feel like we are born with it, all of us. We are born
(02:35:46):

are so grateful for you. We'reso grateful for our friendship and our partnership
