Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hi.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
This is Bill I list from Whistle Onanam Xellison Brownie
Show during the month of February, Gilstrap Family Dealerships are
proud to sponsor another whistle Land Cares initiative. The month
is dedicated to our good friends at Miracle Hill. I
sat down with Susan Pottberg to talk about the cold
winter months ahead and how we can all help Miracle Hill.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yeah, we have had a few warm days, but don't
let that fool you. The cold weather is going to
be right back upon us and we have a lot
of needs. Normally every night we help around six hundred
and fifty people. That's average every day of the year.
And when we do have severe weather, whether it's forty

(00:41):
degrees or below or ninety five degrees and above, we
open additional beds or additional space where we put cuts
in addition to our beds, and we house about two
hundred extra people every night that that happens we do.
So that's about eight hundred and fifty people a.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Night when the weather's the most severe. Yes, now you
think about this, folks at night when you lock your
doors and put your family to bed. There are those
in our communities here that are finding shelter at a
place like Miracle Hill. Otherwise they'd be under a bridge
or somewhere in a box of finding some kind of

(01:21):
shelter the best they could find. And that's why Miracle
Hill to so many is a blessing. And again we're
talking about when temperatures like during the winter months drop
to forty or below, normally six hundred and fifty people,
but when the very severe weather strikes an additional two hundred,
so that is a lot of people and a lot
of need. Tell me what Miracle Hill needs right now

(01:44):
that we can help in your efforts to help the
homeless through this cold snap we're about to hit.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Again well during the cold whether as some of the
things that we have found we really need to just
really help keep people alive, to be honest with you,
is twins size blankets, some hats, gloves, socks, those things
just really help those that are you know, going right
back out into the cold who choose not to come

(02:10):
into our shelter, you know for various reasons. Non perishable
food items, you know, we can use canned anything, really,
canned meats, canned veggies, canned soup. When you're feeding eight
hundred and fifty people a night or three meals a day.
That adds up a lot, So those non perishables are

(02:33):
really valuable to it. We we could use personal care items.
I mean you just imagine your household and how much
toilet trees and things you go through. So we could
use a lot of you know, toilet tissue, toilet paper, paper, towels,
those type things.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
So are you thinking about it? I now, My wife
and I just recently went through our house and we
bundled up a good deal of items that we no
longer need. And you're think, well, I'm going to donate,
Well think specifically about who to donate to. You just
heard from Susan Pottberg and Miracle Hill that right now
they need twin sized blankets, hats, gloves, socks, non perishable
food items, can veggies, soups, meats, coffees and condiments, and

(03:15):
toilet trees and personal care items. We have a tremendous
amount of that at our house. Laurie just yesterday went
through her what basically a closet where she's kept a
lot of toiletries because I didn't realize I had so
much that I don't need here and we were talking
about donating to Miracle Hill. So that's what we'll be
doing this week. Now, let folks know, as far as

(03:37):
these hard goods are concerned, what is the best way
to get these items to you in communities all over
the Upstate? Would we start with your website on locations
or give us some guidelines on that if you could.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah. Absolutely, you can drop them off at any of
our shelters, our rescue missions, or our addiction recovery programs anywhere.
You can find all of those locations nice and neatly
on a map on our website at Miraclehill dot org.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
I noticed when I was there the other day and
I read about the Lamplighters program, and this is a
monthly giving program. If you don't have the hard goods
to donate right now, your dollars go a very long way.
Would you explain the Lamplighter's program please?

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah. Lamplighters are monthly supporters. They're really kind of the
heart and soul that carries us through the lean times
here at Miracle Hill. It doesn't have to be a lot.
I mean, nineteen dollars is a great amount to really
help a person through the whole month. I mean that
provides in itself ten meals and care for one person.

(04:48):
But even if you can't afford that, even five dollars
a month is a long way to help someone in care.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
I have a two decades history with our good friends
at Miracle Hill, and I've seen how cost efficient they
are with your dollars donated, and I can tell you
the lamp Lighters program is a wonderful way if you're
looking to help someone out, certainly the homeless in our community,
to survive with dignity during this cold weather season. Simple

(05:14):
nineteen dollars a month will provide ten meals in care,
And like Susan said, if you can't afford that, just
give what you can and that's a good way to
share your blessings, and that's essentially what we're asking you
to do, especially when the weather gets hard. Now again,
you said we just had some very mild weather, and
maybe that was not top of mind, but if you
look at the forecast and the days ahead, we'll be

(05:35):
back into the forties and cold rain and maybe even
a wet snow, and there are going to be people
in our community who are without shelter. And that's what
we're here is to look out for our brothers and
sisters out there, Susan, while I have you here, is
there anything else top of mind that we need to
get out there before we close out here?

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Just want to thank everybody for how they do take
care of the gifts and care here at Miracle Hill.
Land has the best listeners everywhere. They have always supported
us and we just love and appreciate them.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
That's sweet. Well, listen again, let's review twin size blankets, hats,
gloves and socks, non perishable food items, can veggies, soups,
meats and what have you, chilet trees, personal care items.
If you go to Miraclehill dot org, you will get,
as Susan pointed out, very specific mapping all over the
Upstate and nearest donation center place where you can take

(06:28):
these goods to so make it maybe a family project
or maybe a church project, something that you guys can
do together to help our homeless. During this season. You
hear these stories all the time. I guarantee you they'll
be in the news again in the days ahead because
we're not done with winter yet. You can be a
part of the solution and again, the Lamplighter's program with
Miracle Hill is a great way to do it, and

(06:48):
once again remind folks of your website, Susan, where do
we find you, Miraclehill dot org, and all over social media.
They're doing God's work. They surely are, Susan. Thanks for
being on Carolina Conference.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Thank you for having me.
