(00:00):
First election in Nebraska with a voterID requirement. What issues, if any,
are you aware of? Very few? There are very few issues.
Our voters were well informed about whatthe requirements were, our poll workers were
well trained. Our election officials acrossthe state did a marvelous job. You

(00:21):
know. There were three hundred andthirty three thousand plus ballots cast yesterday,
and out of that there were lessthan one hundred provisional ballots were filled out
based upon ID problems. So itjust went very closely. That's good to

(00:42):
hear. And I know, BrianCruz, Douglas County Election Commissioner, I
was looking into this. We werecommunicating last night. I saw I saw
one that and this guy apparently, according to his ex post on we used
to be Twitter, apparently works fora news channel Nebraska, and he said,

(01:07):
here's his post. He says,my attempt to vote this morning failed.
His name is Dan Swanson. Hesaid, despite assurances by several election
workers, the poll worker a districtPrecinct III would not accept the photo ID
issued by the Supreme Court. AndI don't know if he followed up on

(01:30):
that. I'm not aware of aSupreme Court ID. Bob are you,
and would that be a problem ifyou presented that. Well, he had
a media as I understand it,he had actually a media credential ID issued
by the Nebraska Supreme Court that hadhis photograph and his name on it,
right, And that's a very unusualID to use. I mean, you

(01:53):
have to ask him why did hechoose to use that as opposed to,
for example, the driver's license. It was probably in his hip pocket.
I don't know, that's up tohim. That's it was. It was.
It was a valid ID under thestatute. The problem was really not
the ID. The problem was thatthe name on the ID was was kind
of ambiguous, and that there wasanother name just like it on the voter

(02:15):
rolls. There are two names onthe voter rolls in that county that were
very similar, and that was thatwas the discussion, as I understand it.
He could have, even if therewas ultimately a problem, he could
have voted a provisional ballot and clearedit up with the county clerk later.
But he chose not to his Iunderstand, and he chose to just leave.

(02:37):
Huh. Yeah, I would thinka provisional would be the way anyway.
That's another Yeah, that would explainthat if it's an unusual idea and
there are two identical names, youmight say you better do a provisional.
Apparently he decided not to. Wellthat's good, I would help everybody.
Now, you and Rosie were onhere approximately every twenty minutes for the last

(02:58):
month telling everybody you know, well, I'm sure that's the reason Gary things
went so smooth. Exactly, wemade it clear anybody who doesn't have an
ID will be shot on site.Yeah, that's what the Actually we didn't
say that, but we left theimpression that that was a possibility. I
want I want your radio listeners toknow we did not say that. No,

(03:21):
no, we didn't say that.We made that up. I can't
maybe, but uh it was ActuallyI thought it was very well done at
my polling place, because you hadsomebody there to check the ID. That
took five seconds, and then youwalked over and it was just like the
good old days. You signed thebig book at the ballot the being but
a mom by the way you goand well the person, the person who

(03:42):
checked mine was the same person atthe big book, so you had a
different a different person. Yeah, okay, Yeah, that was very said,
and I like your website too.Your website is as easy to navigate
as any election night website I've everseen. And this is why because you
talk about reporting but not complete,so you know exactly what's happening in real

(04:04):
time for all of the races. The only thing I couldn't find there were
these battled initiatives in Omaha the citycharter on your website. But that's okay
now that that will be on theon the on the Douglas County website,
but not on the state website. And I have to say that the election
officials across the state did a reallyfine job yesterday and and the election officials

(04:30):
in the Elections Division of the Secretaryof State's Office really did yeomen's work yesterday.
And I congratulate the members of theelections in the Secretary of State's Office,
and I congratulate our election officials acrossthe state in Nebraska for the really
outstanding job that they did yesterday.Yes, no doubt, but one question,

(04:54):
Secretary of State at evonon some onyour website, some of the race
this is where there was only oneperson running are shown and others are not.
And what I'm thinking about specifically isOPPD There were a couple of subdivisions
where there was nobody running against theperson, and they're not on your website,

(05:16):
but in some of the legislative districtsthey are. All of the legislative
districts they are. Why is that? I can't answer that, but I'll
be happy to look into that andlet you know. All right, all
right, well so far, sogood, smooth sailing, Robert, Thank
you always, good to have youon, good to be with you.
Thank Rask. The Secretary of StateBob Evnon here on kfab's Morning News

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
