Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're trying to make contact with Congressman Bacon here. I
want to talk to him about this flap about him
helping a Trump person with a visa, and Pro Publica
decided that that was the story because he and Uh
and Donald Trump had their differences and so this is
(00:20):
an unusual thing. And Don Bacon says, well, we'll get
him on here. See what he says. But basically his
position is, and this is right by the way they
do this all the time. It's called constituent services. If
you ever have occasion to have an issue with with
some function of paperwork type function with the federal government
(00:44):
or anything, you can contact your your representative or your
or your senator or whatever and they'll help you with that.
So anyway, we're having a little trouble getting they getting
the connection made with Don Bacon here, So I apologize
for that, but uh, that's that's his position, and I'm
my position would be uh even if it were political.
(01:06):
So what I mean if it's if if you do
something that you don't normally do that, then you might
have a story or something. But this guy was a
Nebraskan and they asked for a little help from Congressman
Bacon's office now, but would there be a potential political
(01:31):
benefit there Don Bacon helped the Trump personal maybe, but
so so what's he supposed to Well, I'm not going
to do it. I think we have Don Bacon on
the line. Now, are you there? Okay? All right? I
thought maybe we miscommunicated or something. No.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
I was getting ready to catch a ride.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Okay, cool. Well, I was just kind of laying out
the basics of this. Am I missing something here? Is
this anything other than what you would have done under
any circumstances if somebody reached out to you for help
with a visa.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
If Tony Bargus would call me asking for a visa
hope for a family or whomever, I would have done it.
We do the same thing for anyone any constituent to
ask us for visa support. Well, put a request into
the the Executive Branch, and we asked for a status
of that visa. That's all we did here. You know,
(02:30):
Andrew is a constituent, and we talked about made sure
we were doing everything by the book. But we decided
to treat that request like every request we do, and
we do hunters, and we do them the same way.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Okay, Now, it may be it may be that that,
and I don't know what any connection might have been
from the Trump campaign, but it's possible. I suppose that
the Trump campaign wanted to help you out a little
bit or make a connection there. But again, so what
it's election season. But to me, yeah, you know.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
He came he came after me two or three months
later in the visit here, so it didn't obviously impact
uh but what was it too? They had nothing to
do with it. Andrew is a constituent and I wanted
to treat it just by the book, nothing more, nothing less.
So we took that request and handled it exactly the
way we handled the other ones, and not expecting, you know,
(03:23):
President Trump to do one thing or the other. In fact,
he attacked me two or three months later. They have
really had nothing to do with that. This what this
is is a Democrat hit piece. This newspaper is a
front piece for the Democrat Party, particularly the you know,
at the national level, and it's a tool for the
Democrats to attack people that they're going after it.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
And you think they could come up with something better.
I mean, the constituent service thing is a little weak,
just quickly before, because we got a short time here.
It looks like we're in for a replay, doesn't it?
Of district too? When it comes to a presidential election,
you're going to be right on the edge here. How
do you see things now?
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Well, it looks very smart at twenty twenty uh and
it's for me, you know. I one's the one, but
are at the top of the ticket. We've had two
polls with President Trump down with a pretty fair margin,
and that's the that's you know, and this could be
the deciding district. I really do think though, if we
focus on Kamala Harris's policies and her positions and the
(04:27):
results of the previous administration, President Trump could do very
well here. But he's got to stay on message if
he wants to take this district. This district's not into
the name calling, not into the into the I would say,
the more juvenile campaign tactics. But you can beat Kamala
Harris with the position. I mean, she wanted confiscation of guns,
(04:47):
she wants price controls, she wants to go into your
bank accounts and take money that that you've not actually
realized that because you haven't cashed it in I mean,
you could go up and down the line, and she
has a she was more liberal than Bernie Sanders, she
was in the Senate. She is very beatable. But we
got you got to run the right campaign and beat her.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Oh, we got to get away from price gauging, which
is what the Vice President says. We're talking about it.
It's about getting Republicans out on Do you think that?
Do you think that the Nebraska Republicans can really rally
and hold their nose if they're not Donald Trump fans
and come out in district too, because you still have
a registration advantage.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
We do. And again I would say, if you focus
on the results of the Trump administration, the bust economy
in forty years until COVID, there was no international havoc
like we have now with Ukraine, Iran and stand Humas,
and I can just go on and on. If we
can focus on results of four years ago versus Kamala
Harris's record as the most she'd be would be the
(05:44):
most liberal Democrat we've ever had. She was to the
left of Bernie Sanders. That will bring Republicans home. That's
got to be a very focused message, and you got
to I learned in the Air Force. It commanded five times.
You got to communicate the same things repeatedly to get it,
to get it and printed in people's minds. And if
you wander and start doing name calling and or just
(06:07):
I call it juvenile stuff. It takes away from your message.
In this district, suburban America, if you focus on the issues,
you can win. You know's remember Jim Pillon won this
district over Carrol Blood And I know, of course I've
wanted you know, four times in a row. You can
win in this district, but you gotta be focused.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Gotta gotta move. I got a roll here. Don. Thanks,
I have a good Labor Day weekend. Appreciate the time,
Congressman Don Bacon
