Speaker 1 (00:00):
It was officially yesterday. We got heads up early in
the morning that Anne Ashford, widow of former or second
diister or Congressman Brad Ashford, would be endorsing Don Bacon,
the incumbent Republican in the second district race this year.
And this is I think very significant given the fact
(00:21):
that Anne, I think it's fair to say you're a
proud Democrat, right.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Good morning, Good morning Gary. I am a proud Democrat.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Yes, And in fact you ran for this you ran
for this seat some years ago. So what went into
this decision?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
So I've been watching Don and getting to know him
over the years through Brad and things. But I've been
watching closer and closer the race and the attacks that
have been levied against Don that I think are totally inane,
and seeing what his results are. And the final step
(01:01):
was when I and I was getting closer and closer
to saying, you know, if you want it, Congressman, I
would love to endorse you, because you have to make
that offer too. He may not have won it, but
the final step for me was when I saw his
postings about his experience in the Ukraine recently and standing
(01:21):
there with President Zelensky, and the thought that immediately entered
my head was, oh, my gosh, we have to have
done continue in his role because we need adults in
the room.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
What is your biggest issue with Tony Vargas.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
I try not to go where my biggest issues are.
I think that the reason I've endorsed Don is because
character is more important than party. Integrity is more important
than party. I do think Tony has an issue with
not voting. I think that he has not voted in
(02:01):
his eight years in the legislature approximately twenty percent of
the time. And there's a thing in the Nebraska legislature
where you can vote not voting, vote present, not voting.
Brad and I would have conversations about this over the years.
It's just wrong. You're sent there to represent people, and
(02:22):
they elect you for a reason, and that's to make
those tough votes. In every legislative body, there are votes
where they try to get you. They got to vote,
and so if you do vote for it, or you
don't vote for it, your subject to criticism. You still
have to take the tough votes. And when I see
(02:43):
Brad and Don acting in a similar manner of they
take those tough votes and they're awful and sometimes they
come back to bite you. But I don't think it's
right that you are elected to represent people and then
don't show up to work twenty percent of the time.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
You will be I assume a blue dot person when
it comes to the presidential vote, I am okay, what
can you? Can you characterize a relationship of a lot
of Republicans wandering in this district? Can you characterize a
relationship between Bacon and Donald Trump?
Speaker 2 (03:17):
You know, I choose not to do that. I think
that's to each person's I have a family of Avid
Trump supporters, and that is their right. I happen to
be an Avid Harris supporter, and that's my right, and
so I just I'm not going to get involved in
(03:37):
presidential politics and trying to tell people how to vote.
I know what I will vote, and I will be
a proud Harris Bacon voter.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Any particular reason why you prefer her, I yeah, that's
the same problem the rest of the country has Anne.
You don't know anything about her. You don't know anything
about her, you don't know what she's going to do.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
That's not true. I'm trying to think of it. I
know that the majority of your listening base is conservative.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Kfab goes out many, many, many miles to many political persuasions.
There it's today, and.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I happen to listen to you guys every chance I get.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Thank you, God bless you.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
I think what it comes down to is again it's
character over politics, and for me, Kamala Harris's character is
more in line with what I'd like to see in
the oval office.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
You have, I'm sure many many friends. I know you're
politically plugged in. And in the second district, Anne Ashford,
where do you see this presidential race going? The polls
seem to indicate that Harris has a big lead. We've
been surprised before. What do you think will happen in
the presidential part of this race?
Speaker 2 (04:58):
My guess is that we will see in this district
Harris Bacon, that it will be a similar result as
to twenty twenty when it was Biden Macon and in
two thousand and eight when it was Obama. Terry.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Well, that may well be. Do you think it'll be,
my guest, do you think it'll be to seventy Do
you think should the number two in Nebraska will be here?
Two hundred and seventieth vote.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
No. I always think it's funny when people start voting
like that, because anybody could say it's there, you know,
that's the foinal vote that puts you over. I don't know.
I don't know. I really seriously, after years of being
in politics and being around politics, I am probably the
most poll adverse persons that exist.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah, well that we were just talking about that earlier,
how you can't trust the pulls. Uh So, what what
will be your role before we go here? And what
do you think what will be your role now helping
Bacon going forward? Does he want you out actively campaigning
or what?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
The campaign has asked me to be very active, and
I've said, of course, I think that when you make
a commitment to something, you should live up to it,
and so I will be doing as much campaigning as
possible between now an election day to make sure that
Don Bacon is reelected, because you'll.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Be evangelizing democrats I assume in the second district.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Yeah, well, anybody, it doesn't matter who you are. I
just think you should look at a person and look
at their character and integrity and their record. And he
has a bipartisan record. He's done plenty of things that
I as a Democrat like, he's gotten plenty of things
that Republicans like, that's independence like, and so I just
think that we need to keep him in office.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Well, your late husband is one of my favorite people
in the world.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yes, you guys were some of his favorites. I mean,
my goodness.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Well, just go ahead and put a large life size
cutout of Brad out there, and that's that gets Tonkie
Bacon some votes.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
There you go, and thanks for the time this morning.
Always good to chat. Appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Thank you. Take care.
