Speaker 1 (00:00):
You got the bell ringers bundled up today and for
a couple of days there Tree of Life campaign kickoff
always with the lighting and a beautiful tree there at
ninetieth and Dodge. Do you track it as you go?
I know you have a goal every year. How's it
going so far? We do gary.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Our goal this year is three point two million dollars
and we are running about on pace, maybe a nickel
or two behind. That's why the kettles are so important.
But you know, we feel good about it coming out
of COVID. We actually had some momentum during COVID, believe
it or not, when people were so generous, and then
we've had a little bit of a lull both with

(00:35):
volunteerism and with contributions the last couple of years. You
need bell ringers. We always need bell ringers. We had
a report came out the other day that said that
volunteerism across the country is down nearly fifty percent, not
only within the Salvation Army, but really across all nonprofits.
It's amazing how all of us have gotten a little

(00:55):
bit more comfortable on the couch.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Now, is it still frowned upon to reach into.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
The Jim, I heard you at six oh five or
whatever it was this morning asked that question, and I
waited until I got hurt.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Jim.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
That's not acceptable.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
I mean, there's no sign or anything.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
I mean, Jim, they have a padlock on it for
a reason, and that reason is you.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
That's just a slight obstruction.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Jim.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
You talked about some stories about kettles. There are some
classic stories about people who tried to get away with
kettles too.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Yeah, that's a Rosie di GENOZI next week.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
They don't end well when you try to take it.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
I know. You know, Lucy made an interesting point the
other day, and I hadn't thought of it. There are
fewer and fewer people that carry cash that anymore, you know,
And it was always a tradition, still is with me
because I'm one hundred years old. But yeah, whatever cash,
you know, loose change or whatever, just every time you
pass one of those buckets, put it in. But fewer

(01:49):
and fewer people have cash. Are you seeing that impact?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
We are? And what I noticed when I ring on
evenings and weekends once in a while is people will
go into the store now and get cash and come
back out and put in more often, but there's still
there's still a generation that does seem to carry more cash.
And you know, we're dealing with fewer shoppers, less cash
and pockets, but people are still finding ways to give.

(02:13):
You can give online. We do have a couple of
places where you can tap to give. That's a little
more user friendly. You could tap your credit card or
doubit card. But for the most part, we still see
people digging deeply into their pockets and into their car
councils or wherever you store your change in cash.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Well, you know, Jeff, we do the Hope for the
Hungry radios on every year for the Open Door Mission,
and I heard generate. The generosity of this audience these
people is amazing, So I know they are going to
be people hearing this. You need volunteers. You're going to
be hearing from some what's the best way to do that?
How do you reach out?

Speaker 2 (02:48):
You can just go on to register to ring dot
com or just google you know ring ringing in Omaha,
Okay or whatever, and it'll take you there. It'll give
you sites where you can go to and pick some
hours and location. Yeah, yeah, and you can also you know,
get groups together. We love to see it when families
come out, when school groups come out, and if you

(03:08):
bring some cute kids or if they're allowed pets, it's amazing.
If you can play an instrument or sing, Jim, yeah,
you know that really enhances the gain.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Just break into song there the target parking lot.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
Have you ever thought about the possibility, and I know
it's not easy of creating some sort of a card
scanner at the Kettle's so that people can give with
a credit card.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Thanks for listening, I did.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
I just a'm trying to get clarity on whether it's
a possibility anytime soon.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
It's a tap to give in Jim, I shouldn't know
where we have those locations. I'm not certain, but we
can get that back to you. But yes, there is
something where you can go simply tap your credit card
and you don't have to enter all the information, all
the detail. Now, there are some securities built into some
credit cards doubit cards where you can't do that. The
challenge we have you gentlemen, have lived in Minnesota, Nebraska
most of your lives. It's the weather elements that create

(03:55):
some challenges for that.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
I remember the tradition and maybe not the only City.
But in Minneapolis, at least when I was a kid,
a lot of the ringers would be dressed up like
Santa Claus, and her parents will always have to find
a reason why there was more than one of them. Well,
Santa's helper there, you know. But I love that ringing
the bells and collecting and and you can also do

(04:19):
it online easily right the Salvation Army dot com or org,
or you can go.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
There's some site called Omaha Redkettle dot Org Omaha Redkettle
dot org.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Very easy to do it there. Thank you, Jeffrey, You're welcome.
Merry Christmas. Always good to see it in Jimber.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
You're helping out the most vulnerable people in the community
when you're putting money into the kettles or writing out
a check to.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
This Indeed Army. Indeed, jeff Beck, when the Salvation Army
