Speaker 1 (00:00):
Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hans And joins us here for
a few minutes from Washington, d C. Aaron, good morning,
go to have you back.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
That guy made it pretty easy for you.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Uh yeah, and I think he, you know, unfortunately for him,
he kind of typified what the current public policy is,
and that is, Look, if you're a law abiding member
of an immigrant community and in our nation, you really
don't have much to worry about. But if you're a
criminal element and you're trying to blend into the immigrant
(00:30):
communities and you're victimizing innocent people and businesses, you probably
have something to worry about.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, you're in DC. You had, along with other sheriffs
from around the country, face to face with Tom Holman yesterday, right,
tell me about that.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, we did. It's a really interesting group. So this
is the kind of smaller nucleus group of the largest
sheriffs in the nation, and it's they did the math yesterday.
It's a fifty to fifty split Republicans Democrats. But I
got to tell you, we agree. I'm probably ninety percent
of things and almost one hundred percent of us agree
on this issue that we need a stronger border. We
need to fix immigration, We need to stop criminals that
(01:06):
are in our country illegally. And we also all understand
that we need immigrant and immigration, legal immigration to help
replenish our workforce. So, Tom Holman, the borders are met
with us yesterday really refreshing. What you see on TV
is what you get in person with the only differences
you don't get the you don't get the snippets and
the selective news clips. And so what the message to
(01:28):
the sheriffs was, he wants our partnership. He doesn't want
us to be immigration officers. He wants to partner with sheriffs.
And here's why. Again, like we started this with legal
individuals not breaking the law and immigrant communities nothing to
worry about. They want to go after quote the worst first.
(01:50):
They want to prioritize public safety and national security threats,
and so there are three priorities. Are secure in the border,
which now was ten thousand people streaming across the border
every month is now down to a trickle the southwest border,
I think under five hundred this month. They want to
aggressively deport known criminals, so trendela Agua gang cartels, known terriffs,
(02:17):
and they want to save the three hundred this was staggering,
three hundred missing children that came over the border over
the last four years that were released by the federal
DJHS into our community and no one knows where they are.
They're at home and is terrified they're being sex traffic.
So it's really Phase one, seven hundred known convicted criminal
(02:39):
illegal aliens in our country. They're going after them. They're
going to get them deported as soon as they're done
serving their sentence, or deport them like the gentleman we
had in the lobby of thugas Kenny Sheriff's office. Phase
two one point four million asylum seekers who lost their
asylum hearing. We know percent of people do not need
(03:01):
the criteria of legal asylum. And so after they go
over the criminals, they're going after the one point four
million that lost their asylum hearings. And then Phase three
is whoever's left and that's gonna he even have mets
that's going to require legislative solutions. So very very good
to hear. And I'll tell you one thing, he's asking
the sheriffs not only for partnership, but he's asking for help.
(03:22):
They need detention bed space. And unfortunately, in Douglas County,
I don't run the jail. It's the county board that
runs a jail. But the numbers that he was given
sheriffs a majority of which two who do run a
jail in that room, the numbers that he was thrown
at him indicates that for every one hundred detention beds
that they're willing to contract with the Feds on per year,
(03:42):
and they're looking at giving that local community around five
point five million dollars per one hundred beds in federal revenues.
So a lot of real opportunity to partner to make
our community safe and offset local taxes.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah, although he has been at pains to say, and
this may be messaging to folks are here illegally, but
he's been at pains to say that, yes, if you
are in the country illegally, you're on the table for
deportation too. And if we happen to come across you
while we're going after criminals, away you go. Did he
address that part of it, because you mentioned a minute
(04:16):
ago that those folks here don't have anything to worry about.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Well, he did, and here's what he said, And this
is the message of the sheriffs. He goes, look, and
he spoke directly to the communities in the room that
are sanctuary cities. He says, Look, would you rather have
ICE in your jails or in your communities? He goes,
because if you don't let ICE cooperate with the jails
and vice versa, then we had no choice. Ice has
no choice then to look to these same criminals in
(04:40):
the community. And he indicated that as they're looking for
criminals in the community that other illegal immigrants that they
find are obviously going to get swept up in that
net too. So his choice is help us focus on
the criminal element that they want through the easiest confluence points,
that is the jails. If they do that, if the
sanctuary cities will do that, then that'll mitigate the need
(05:03):
to be looking for these individuals out in the community.
The other thing he clarified, which is really good, ICE
did change a policy lately allowing them It used to
be hands off, they couldn't go into schools or churches
or hospitals. They changed that only because ICE was the
only group that had that limitation. But they do not
plan on doing any sweeps or checks in schools or
(05:26):
hospitals or churches. The only reason why they did that
is because down on the border you've got some churches
from schools and hospitals that have been co opted and
being utilized by the cartels as essentially a safe haven.
And they said, if there's a national security risk, public
safety risk, we don't want to ever hands tied by
our own policy. So a lot of good clarification from
borders our own.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Just good common sense. Coach, Well, you're probably a coach.
You probably coach a youth league too, But I meant
to say I share it.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Here's here's all. Here's I'll tell you. Gary. If you're
in the country and your status is questionable, but you're
not a criminal. You're not a criminal, go talk to
an immigration lawyer. Please help find a legal pathway to
be a full fledged, contributing member of our community. We
want you for our workforce, but the criminal element. It's
clear that everybody is focused in on you right now.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Good advice, Sheriff. Thanks
