Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks to Fox News Radios Jonathan Savage for joining us
for a few minutes here on this Monday.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Jonathan, good morning, Good morning to you.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
I wanted to get the latest on the US slash
Russia slash Ukraine negotiations. The Special Envoy Whitcoff was on
with Shannon Breeam on Fox News Sunday yesterday morning, and
he's a sharp guy, and he sounds about as optimistic,
I guess as you can be given the situation. Where
does this go now? They're meeting in Saudi Arabia, right.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, in Saudi Arabia. There's a delegation from the United States,
a delegation from Russia, and a delegation from Ukraine. The
Americans and the Ukrainians met yesterday and the Americans and
the Russians are, as far as we understand, meeting right now.
If you are thinking there's going to be an end
of the war this week, I think that you will
be disappointed. As much as Steve Witkoff is optimistic, he

(00:53):
says a lot of progress has been made, that the
presidents have had very productive phone calls in the last week.
It appears as though what they're really working towards at
the moment are technical talks how to safeguard energy facilities,
how to reach a deal for a maritime ceasefire in
the Black Sea allowing the free flow of shipping. The

(01:16):
Ukrainians are quite cautious because they say that Vladimir Putin
is the obstacle to peace.

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Cross bordered drawn attacks. The violence continues, of course, at
least three civilians killed in Ukraine, and Zelensky's calling for
more pressure on Moscow and greater foreign support. I guess
his big push now, Jonathan is a security guarantee, right

(01:44):
where is he on the on the territory that Russia
already controls?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, vlober Zelenski has always said, look, we could sign
a piece steal, but what's the stop of Vladimir Putin
coming back again and again and again. He's broken promises
in the past, and we don't trust him. So he
wants security guarantees. He wants either a peace keeping force
on the ground or the US or other countries promising

(02:10):
to step in should Russia invade once again. But of course,
Russia occupies about twenty percent of Ukraine at the moment,
and it Russia says that it wants those parts of
Ukraine for keeps. It says that it's held referenda in
these regions than the people there have voted to join Russia.
Although these claims, these referenda, they are hotly disputed and

(02:34):
discredited in the international community. So Ukraine says, sorry, We're
not giving up any of our land. This is a
red line for both sides and could be a major
obstacle to a peace deal.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Well, that's the obstacle, isn't it. I mean, and if
that's the case, that they stand by that, then this
war goes on forever or I don't know about fever,
but as a stalemate.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Basically arguably so. But what the White House is saying
is the reality on the ground has to be reflected.
Ukraine's not going to get back every inch of land,
and the public pronouncements, of course, the two sides will
have their absolutist positions. All this needs to be sorted
out at the negotiating table if there's going to be

(03:12):
a lasting piece.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Indeed, we cough is pretty good, isn't he He's uh,
do you know his background?

Speaker 2 (03:20):
I know that he's I think he's a real estate guy,
golfing body of President Trump. I think that's his background
as far as I know, and you know, he's clearly
hugely trusted by President Trump. He's sent him to talk
about Ukraine with the rights of President Putin. He sent
him to the Middle East to access an envoy there
to strike it, try to strike a deal. But of

(03:41):
course Steve Wikoff, I think some of the things he's
saying are causing concern in Ukraine and Western Europe because
a lot of what he's saying over the weekend and interviews,
saying that Ukraine is a false country, saying disputed things
like Ukrainian troops are surrounded when that's not backed up
by open source data, and also going to a lot
with the Russian line of these referendums in Ukraine, indicating

(04:03):
that people there want to be Russian rule. So I
think that Steve Wikoff perhaps huguely trusted by President Trump,
but looked on, perhaps with a bit more weariness by
the Ukrainians right now.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
Well, his family has a history. I believe his grandparents
are from Russia, and I think he speaks a form
of Russian which is helpful. And you're right, he got
connected to Trump because he was involved in major real
estate deals in New York.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
But this looks like a career diplomat, Woolworth.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Building, daily news, building some of the big ones. But
because of his family connection Jewish family connection to Russia
and to the Eastern Europe, he's a perfect fit.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Well, I'm sure that Donald Trump has confidence in him
because he's probably negotiated with him before.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Yeah, real estate lawyer, Hell yes, yeah, no doub right.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Jonathan, Thanks always good to have you on.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Thank you
