Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gary, Sadlemayer, Jim Rose, Lucy and Craig and Courtney helping
you ease into this Tuesday. Pleasure to welcome Nebraska State
Senator Kathleen Cauth to the program. You remember the vicious
at times debate last session and the Nebraska Legislature over

(00:20):
a couple of issues relating to transgenderism and what was
at that time called the Sports and Spaces Act, and
now and the sponsor, Senator Kathleen Cauth, promised to be
back this session, and indeed she is, and today is
the day that the Stand with Women Act goes to
the floor for debates. Senator, good morning, Good to have

(00:41):
you on.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Good morning Gary.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
So are you girded up and ready for what will
probably be an ugly day?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
You know, we're always ready to take the hit, sometimes
literally because we have had people throwing things at us.
But this is a necessary bill. We need to get
this pass right.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
So vote counting is important. Thirty three is a critical
number because that's what it takes to end debate because
this will certainly be filibustered. What are you seeing relative
of the vote count now?

Speaker 2 (01:18):
I am cautiously optimistic that we've got our thirty three.
So I don't want to jinx it, but you know,
I've had discussions with everyone, and a lot of the
senators have helped me work on the bill. I've had
great support sitting down and walking through the bill, figuring
out you during the process and the menu. The AM
seven oh one is what came out of committee, and

(01:38):
that incorporated changes from not just the hearing where some
of the Democrats make suggestions that actually were really thoughtful
and very good. So we made those changes. But a
lot of my fellow conservative senators walked through the bill
with me, line by line and explains how things impacted,
you know, the rule senators, and figuring out exactly how

(02:01):
to make this bill very very good. So I've been
so very pleased with my colleagues on the floor, even
those who I disagree with, they there have been thoughtful suggestions.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Right. This has to do with not only sports competition,
but also with locker rooms and restrooms, right.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Correct, Okay, it also has to do with state agencies,
which would include our prison system. And that's that's what
we're This bill is about women's right to privacy, safety,
and opportunity. I think you saw in the Omaha World Herald.
There was a half page ad from the ACSU with
a bunch of faith leaders saying, you know, don't vote

(02:42):
for this, it's mean and unkind. Well, it is unkind
to women to tell them that they have to accept
a male in their restroom, or in their locker room,
or on their sports team or in a prison cell.
That's what's unkind. And women are being discriminated against by
allowing men to be in their spaces.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Last year the two holdouts were merv repe and Tom Brandt.
Repe is quoted in the Nebraska Examiner is saying he's
now leaning toward a Yes. Have you had conversations with Brandt?
Did you ever identify why it was he was opposed
to it a year ago and what's changed?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yes? And actually, you know, he was very helpful explaining
why he is on board. It's it's again. It's been
a process this session of really reaching out to everyone
who had concerns and working with them. So and I
was able to sit down with Senator Reaping on Friday
going through a lot of just questions he had about it.

(03:38):
So I feel we're in a good place.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Okay. Chatting with District thirty one, State Senator Kathleen KAlP
what do you expect in terms of resolution? Will this
be a multi day debate?

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Well, so today will be a general file debate, and
because of the intensity of this issue, Speaker has advised
that this will be a four hour debate. So on
general file it's usually eight hours, but this one will
go four hours, and then on Select file two hours
and then final reading one.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
So we've we've.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Had the debate time for this bill. Because we've had
this this is the third year for this debate, the
issues have been have chewed over. It's in the national
consciousness continuously. You know, this is something eighty percent of
people nationwide, including Democrats and independents, are saying this is

(04:34):
reasonable to say boys should not be girls' sports teams
or in their locker rooms or bathrooms. And that was
a New York Times poll that came up with that.
I think it was like seventy nine point seven percent.
So this is something that is very much in the
consciousness of our community. Everyone understands what at stake, and
so it's going to be a four hour debate, so

(04:55):
by seven tonight will be done. We start today at three.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
The SAMs like such common sense to so many people,
uh this legislation. So it's hard for me to imagine
that all of the Democrats, and I know it's officially
a nonpartisan, but we get it that. It seems hard
for me to believe that all of the Democrats are

(05:18):
opposed to this on principle. Is it your sense that
they are all true believers or that there's some vote
trading going on here.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
I think there's quite a few who are real true believers.
You know, you have that very progressive liberal leachis mindset
in the Democrat Party where you know, they know better
than everybody else, and what they think is that men
should be allowed to be in women's sports and spaces.

(05:49):
It's I don't know that there's gonna be any vote trading.
I think that there are some people who probably would
be a little bit more moderate, but feel very compelled
to say to the party line the Democrats in our
legislature hold very very tight. You know, we are officially
non part of that, but there's very very seldom do

(06:11):
Democrats across the aisle.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
That's too bad. Well, good luck, we'll follow this carefully.
A senator appreciate the time this morning, of course.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Thanks so much for bet.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Senator Kathleen Kauf
