Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pleasure for us here on kfab's Morning News to welcome
back Colonel Tom Brewer to the program. Just happily back
from Ukraine. I say happily because Tom, I'm always relieved
when I hear you came back in one piece.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
I was at this time, Good morning, great. It was
probably the most violent trip that I've taken this time.
When we arrived in Kiv, which Kiv, you know, that's
their capital. It tends to be a little safer there.
So we arrived on nineteen April and that night ninety
five drones or missiles impacted and I mean it rocked,

(00:38):
the city, rocked in the hotel we were at. So,
I mean, you knew you were in a combat zone
when you arrived, but it's under a lot more pressure
than it's ever been. And you know, it's hard to
have enough missiles to intercept the volume of drones and
missiles are shooting.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Okay, lots of things to get to here. And I
know that you and I have have some differences on
how this looks. But we keep seeing President Trump trying
to get peace over there, and he's trying to get Putin.
Do you think Putin's just playing him for time.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
I think he is. And you know, one of the
questions I'd ask folks here is is what does Russia
have that we want? I understand that they want to
have a big deal, but who wants to drive a
Russian car? Who wants a Russian refrigerator? I mean, finds
something Russian that people want? And I could see why
we might want to have a deal of some type.
But they have oil and nuclear missiles that that's kind

(01:37):
of their calling in life. And you know, I'd like
to see it end too. I mean, it's brutal to see,
especially the surveillans that are dying on the Ukrainian side.
It's just, you know, it's heart wrenching. But the other
part of it is even the people you talk to
that have been impacted by these attacks tell you that
they do not want to live under the Russian thumb,
that they've done that and that if it means dying,

(01:59):
then they'll die. And you know you got to respect
them for that.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, you have, you have noted you believe that the
Ukrainians can prevail in this conflict, but they need a
lot more from us. Is that true? And if that
is true, what does prevail mean? Does that mean they
can drive Russia out and reclaim their original borders that
Russia has occupied well by.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Their constitution, That's that's what it calls for. But I
think if you step back and take a deep breath
and you're realistic, there's part of the East that they're
not going to reclaim. I mean, from one, it's been
pounded into obliviation. The cities are leveled, the land is
full of brand mines and unexploded shells. So you know,

(02:45):
the idea of having aligned that cuts through the East
somewhere and a demilitarized zone is probably realistic in a
solution that the Ukraine could live with, depending on what
the line is. But I really don't believe Putin once
he is in a better position right now because that
front line on the Ukrainian side is mighty thin. They're

(03:09):
living on drones. The drones are fighting the war. Those
foxhols are not full of many soldiers because they're struggling
to find the numbers. They can't stay with Russia man
for man. Russia is willing to sacrifice a thousand and
fifteen hundreds a day. Ukrainians are losing about one hundred
to one hundred and fifty a day, but they can't afford

(03:29):
to lose that.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
From Nancy on email, she says, since our country has
soured so much on Zelensky and Ukraine, would you ask
Colonel Brewer briefly touch on why he still has such
passion for Ukraine. It might help me and others have
a different perspective.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Well, a good question. I guess what I would say is,
don't hate the country because of the leader. I don't
think Zelenski's been a perfect president. He's done his share
of things that that I don't think he probably should
have did. But if you could see the people over
there in the country, it is very Nebraska, Iowa like,

(04:10):
and a lot of small towns and a lot of
just farm people, good people. And so you know, when
I hear people hating on Ukraine, I step back and
just say, you've got a country that lives on agg
For the most part, there is as basic as you
could ask folks to be. They were invaded by Ukraine

(04:32):
by Russia, they didn't they didn't do anything to provoke it.
Now they'll say, well, yeah, but they talked about becoming
part of NATO and all that. If that's the grounds
to invade a country, then you know, that's that's a
pretty sad, you know, criteria to use the want to
invade your neighbor, and so yeah, I just think that
the more people understand about Ukraine. I mean, this trip

(04:55):
we had, we had submissions, and one was an ag
mission to try and get a partnership with Nebraska because
at some point this war will end and there will
be hundreds of millions, even into the billions of dollars
it's going to be spent to reconstruct the agg sector,
and we're just wanting to make sure that if they
need irrigation or whatever they need, Nebraska would be available

(05:17):
to help them. But you've got to build a relationship.
You've got to have folks that know you and trust you.
And that's part of what we did over there, just.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
A minute of our soul left here with Tom Brewer.
You say, if we do, if we provide the Ukrainians
with the weaponry that they need, they can prevail. Suppose
that's true. I don't know, but suppose that's true. Give
me some kind of a time window when are we done.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Well? And of course that depends on the weapon systems
we give him.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
I've been one there, give them everything, give them everything
you suggest.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Uh, well, I think you'd have to be a little
bit careful there because he still has nukes and he's
still a little bit a lot crazy. So what I
would do is look at strategic weapons that can end
the war because it makes them hurt so bad they
have to end the war. And I believe the Tomahawk
missile is one of those. And you know, there's there's
a lot of folks say, well, you're a war mongered
all that. There's a difference between you know, being a

(06:11):
warmonger and being realistic and understanding the complexities of how
to fight a war and how to win a war.
And and the Tomahawks would be huge because right now
the airfield's deep into Rusher, are launching the bombers that
are dropping the guide bombs that are taking off the
front lines. You take them out and you take over
there the ability to logistically resupply the troops in the front.

(06:32):
This war comes to an end because they hurt too much,
they can't continue. But that that's a big commitment. And
I don't know if the President's ready to do that,
but those are the weapons systems that could make a difference,
and I think bringing into the war, I don't think
you'll see the war end until because I think there's
both sides are just gonna have to hurt a lot
more before this thing's going to come to a close.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Tom, good to have you back, Thanks for the time.
Always good to chat Tom Brewer here on afab's morning
