Speaker 1 (00:00):
In the middle of baseball fever here in Omaha College
World Series Arkansas Murray State. An elimination game today and
the winner's bracket later LSU U C l A. That's
the schedule for Monday. And it's so good to have
a baseball immortal join us in the middle of the
College World Series. Who had a championship here with Texas

(00:22):
in nineteen eighty three, Roger Clemens. Roger, good morning, Good
morning man. Great to have you on. Thanks so much
for taking the time here. Do you get back for
the series once in a while.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I do, obviously if the if the Longhorns are part
of it. I played this calendar to get up that
way and just love Omaha. I mean, I love the
support from the fans. Even when a few of the
home you know, your teams that you follow get knocked
out and eliminated the draw and the fan base is
still there. The people in Omaha come out and support us.

(00:55):
And as a player, that is you know, I still
you know, like you just said, eighty two eighty three,
going back to back years into Omaha and finally winning
it in eighty three. Is the crowds we played in
front of back then were tremendous. It was a tremendous
stepping stone on a young player that you know then

(01:17):
once gets drafted and goes to the major league. So
this is a great deal.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
You were Justice sophomore. You pitched a complete game to
bea at Alabama for the championship. There aren't that many
complete games anymore.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Roger, there's not. We always tease each other, some of
us when we play in the American Century, the golf
tournament out in Tapo I usually played with Greg Maddox
usually one of those rounds, and we tease each other
about it. He looked at me, he said, Rock, I
think you could go four innings right now game these days,
so I'd have to ice for about three days.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
But maybe you're also involved. We lost two great local
baseball men and John Stella and Bill Olsen this past year,
and you're involved now with the Stella Olson Foundation, which
sounds cool.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Tell us about that, Well, it's again, it's it's Uh
it deals with kids, and when anything deals with what
you know, what they're working on and and what they're doing. Uh.
It was a you know, the guys contacted me. I
we have the Roger Clemens Foundation. We celebrated what our
thirty fifth year. We deal with that risk children and
uh so we we get involved in a lot of things.

(02:26):
I still do stuff with the four teams that I've
played with. Obviously with the Red Sox, I'm tied pretty
tight with the Jimmy Fun. We have a really cool
package we do there. But yeah, it was great. I
got to meet a lot of the uh personnel when
I was there for the College Baseball Hall of Fame
deal and uh, you know, off the a little side note,

(02:46):
trying to strike up the Roger Clemens of work to
try and they name different awards gives these college kids.
So hopefully I can get the uh Roger Clemens pitching
the and that'd be fun. And but yeah, we love it.
It's uh it's real special that people really put their
heart and soul behind it. So we're thankful for that.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Did you happen to no Greg Olsen. You guys were
kind of contemporaries, weren't you.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, as Bell's son, I did you know him very well.
But yet I had an opportunity to visit with you know,
different you know, different guys and again my you know,
I have a personal service contract. I do with the Astros,
my local team here in Houston, but it doesn't limit
me when one of the other teams after young players.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Talking here with the Rocket Roger Clemmons with us on
news radio eleven ten kfa B. I want to ask
you about a couple of things that had some significance
over the weekend beyond the College World Series. Happy Father's
Day yesterday. What was it like to be up there
watching your son Cody hit a home run for the
Minnesota Twins just a few weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, you know special, You know I have that We
all gathered up and got to Boston. We knew he
probably would get a start, and he did. So it's
pretty cool to see the kid running around the stadium
that you know I I poured my heart and sweat
and tears into for thirteen years and then wanting to
hit a game winner was was was just really special.
And it's been fun watching the Twins. You know, they

(04:11):
got a nice pitching staff, had an opportunity to visit
with some of their pitchers and bed a nice little run.
They need to get going again and find a little mojo.
But you know, Father's Day special, especially when you got
the boys. You know three of my four boys played professionally,
and I continue to tell them how special that was
to be able to play at that level.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
What's more, what's more nerve racking for you standing there
on the mound looking at someone like Bo Jackson or
Ken Griffy Jr. Or Or and having the ball in
your hand, or being there in the stands watching your
son and there's nothing you can do about it.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Oh exactly. They my biggest thing I tell people. I
wanted to make it to the major League so I
could face Reggie Jackson. And I had the opportunity to
face Reggie. We've become great friends over the years, and
he was a California Angel and that was the only
time I was felt a little nervous. It wasn't too
far off of the College World Series that I got
the faithing, and it was like I didn't even want
to make eye contact with Reggie. But you know the boys,

(05:04):
I think if they pitched, I would be a little
more edgy. They're playing the position and hitting. I'm pretty
pretty comfortable with it. Anytime the boys or their teammates
asked me a pointy question about the game, I'll give
him a pointy to answer. Other than that, I just
kind of stay away from it and I sit and
watch and see how pitchers or for that matter, the
catcher really calling the game is trying to break down

(05:27):
break down that hitter. So a lot going on, and
but yeah, I love it. I just try and say
as calm as I can.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
All right, pointed question for you. Any thoughts on no
Kings Day protests across America this weekend.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Yeah, I don't know what's going on there, so we
you know, my whole theory on that is, I've always
been a you know, obviously, and you know, I really
enjoys Donald Trump and what he's been able to do.
And you know, we can handle his late night tweets
or whatever, but he'll he'll go back as people that way.
And you know, I said, I'm an American. I love

(06:02):
the American flag, and I think that no matter ever
who's in charge and running this country, you should get
behind him, and whether you voted for him or not,
get behind him and root for him to do well
and and keep us safe as a nation.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
That's great, Roger, But back to the important stuff here
for just a second. I'm I'm in Minnesota. Made have
been a big Twins fan. And I'm suffering right now.
I'm hurting. Tell Cody whatever it takes. I know they
lost Lopez for twelve weeks. That didn't help, but come on.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah they had a nice little run. I was excited
for their throwing it well and get in time to
hit him and and but yeah, he's a he's a hybrid.
He likes the guys. They have the arms to do it.
So he's thinking sneak in there somehow in that wild
card that would be a be a thrill. So uh,
you know, like I said, I enjoyed watching these guys.
Now that Cody's there, I obviously watched closely my friends

(06:55):
that are on other teams, but you know, we're watching
Minnesota close and I can't wait to get back up there.
We've been on the road quite a bit catching the
team when we can on the road in between my
foundation work and my appearances. But yeah, we're rooting hard
for him.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Great, Hey, so much appreciate you taking the time this morning.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Thank you, Roger, you got it man. Good luck and
again a big tip of the hat to the people
there in o.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Mall Amen the great Roger Clemens. Here on kfab's morning news,
