Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good to welcome Senator Pete Reccot's back to the program. Senator,
good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Good morning, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
Been a while you are gracing the Penthouse studio.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well, you know, I got this day job in DC
kind of keeps.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Meah the time. I've heard a recess now for Russha Shana.
Then you're back next week, right, Yes, to resume this
ridiculous dance that happens every year with the government shut down.
Schumer wants what health care for? Illegal? He said, I'm
not doing anything unless we get that.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah, hippo hypocrite. That's why I was going to start
Chuck Schuber was a hypocrite. So last year January twenty
twenty four, when he wanted to pass a clean CR,
he said, oh, it's important to pass the clean CR
so we can do.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Our appropriate that's continuing resolution right, right.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Continuing resolution right. So he was all about it last
year when he was in charge. Now, I might point
out we passed eleven appropriations bill last year. He brought
up exactly zero them to the floor to get done.
So now when the shoe's on the other foot, he's like, no, no, no, no,
we can't plass pass a clean continuing resolution. We've got
to have a trillion dollars more in spending. And by
the way, I want to act the fifty billion dollar
(01:01):
Rural health Care Fund, and I want to put in
the put back to regulations the Republicans took out they're
going to you know, that would require all this owner's
stuff on our rural healthcare that would end up closing
them and you know, all this sort of stuff. It's like, dude,
the hipocrisy here is stunning. So but be that as
it may. We need Democrat votes to pass the continuing
Resolution and appropriation's budget. So we're going to be going
(01:23):
through that process when we get back to try and
keep government open.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
So where is the negotiating room and the things that
he wants as far as the Republicans are concerned.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Well, we'll see what happens here. I'm going to leave
the negotiation up to Leader thuon right and see where
he wants to go with it. Look again, Chuck should
just passed a clean cr give us a chance to
start passing these appropriations bills. That's the only way we're
going to really get a handle on the spending. And
it's the way that we're supposed to do it, not
this short term stuff that. Frankly, this is really really
damaging for our military because I think what a lot
(01:53):
of people don't realize. When you just pass a continuing resolution,
you're just taking up last year's budget. But it doesn't
allow them, the military to make long term commitments. And
you know, our weapon systems are big long term projects.
We live in a really dangerous world. Chuck is undermining
our security by continuing to have these continuing resolutions. We
need real appropriations bills allow the military to plan by
(02:14):
weapon systems that will tour China, Russia, Iraan.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
North Korea.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, but he's more afraid of his base than Iran
or Russia or China because they roasted him after he
so called caved on the last time.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Did he lose a bunch of the polls against AOC
or something.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
So he's afraid of getting beat by his own base
in New York City. This is how they operate. Now, Hey,
wait a minute, what are our chances in the next election?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Sattlee Rose. I think that's exactly it. He's being driven
by his own politics, and frankly, the Democrat leaders that
the rules of Democrats have for their caucus give Chuck
a lot more power than the rules that we give
John Thune, so he really can punish people who step
on the line.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
So he wants to go back to COVID nineteen medical subsidies, Yes,
Obama subsidies, even though there isn't any COVID. He wants
to put the five hundred million for public broadcasting. That's
really expensive too. Yeah, it's like you're like six hundred
million out. And then there's he wants that five hundred
million back for friend PR and PBS. That's got to
come back. Now, what is it that he doesn't want?
(03:15):
Whole thing was a trillion dollars. You know, so far
this year we have not really seen Schumer be able
to compromise. So remember we're trying to get these appropriate
the president's cabinet members put or subcapinet members put in
place a million members, and typically you pass him on
a voice vote or you know, as consent. Even Biden
(03:36):
got like fifty seven percent of has done that way.
We've got exactly zero because Chuck Schumer won't allow him
go through. So we said, well, let's negotiate. Can we
come to some negotiation where we can get some of
them through. And you know what, blah blah, Chuck can't
can't be seen even negotiating with us and coming to
a deal because he's afraid of his own shadow or actually,
as you point out, his base in New York. Well,
(03:56):
John Thune was on with the Cuddler the other day
and Cutler said, what, what's his excuse? He says, well,
they're all incompetent. Okay, the reason we're not going to
pass these people through is because they're just Trump cronies and.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
They're so bogus. So here's the thing. Yeah, he said, oh,
we got to scrutinize all these very contracts. You know
how much time they've spent scrutiniz I think they make
us go through two hours for every one of these nominees.
They've spent on average two minutes and twelve seconds talking
actually about the nominees, really two minutes and twelve seconds
on average. Now, and some of them actually, like I
think like sixty percent of they're not even talking about
(04:27):
it all. So they're actually loading up on some of them.
But it's like, guys, you're again hypocrites. You're not even
talking about the nominees when you're getting you floor time.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Right, I just think for the first time a Republican's
not going to get blamed for sutting down the government.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah, because we're all going to vote to keep it
open and the Democrats are going to be the ones
closing down. This will be the Shumer shutdown. And you know,
I think it's just part of what Chuck thinks he
has to do to show he's fighting for his you know,
radical base in New York. And at some point, hopefully
other members of the Democrat CAUs because there's a bunch
of Democrats who actually do want to know, say hey,
(05:00):
let's find common ground. We're not going to green on
a lot of stuff. Let's find the stuff were on.
Let's cut deals. There are a bunch of his people
in his caucus. Hopefully those more sane heads will eventually
convince him you can't just keep the government shut down.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
You have made an official Now you're running again. Not
a surprise, but for a us centator after run every
two years, that's been.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
A little different, a little different.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
So what are you looking for here? I think it
was Channel seven round out and put a camera in
Dan Osbourne's face. And he said, you know, you're just
a bazillionaire who's you know, you're worried about the one
percent and he's the man of the people and all
of that. What's this campaign going to be?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Like do you think, Well, the first thing is that
fake Dan Osbourne is not an independent. Right, Look, the
Democrats are have already endorsed him. I think when I
came out and called fake Dan Asbourn yesterday, Jane cleb
came out and defend him. She's the Democrat part, Like,
what what do you need to know? Right? Like the
Democratic Party share rushed out to defend an independent. Really
is he really an independent?
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
In ninety five percent of his money comes from outside
the state. He's fighting for out of state coastal Democrats,
not for Nebraskas.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
You know, he won't tell people. He won't tell people
what he is, right, He's like, was asked about should
boys play girls sports? And he said, well, that's a
tough one.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Left to Nebraska.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
He wouldn't tell people where he's going to vote, but
he ended up voting against Trump. Right, that's a big one.
He won't tell people who's gonna cauc us with. He's
got to caucus with somebody, and all his moneys come
from Democrats, So he's basically trying to hide that. He said,
if the guy's a total fake, So part of what
we're gonna be talking about is just fake dan Asbourne
letting people know he's really a Democrat. And then the
flip side is, look, I've been serving the people in
(06:38):
Nebraska and elected office for over ten years. We got
a record as governor delivering tax relief, of cutting taxes
for seniors, for our military, for families. We went through
some tough times like the flooding of twenty nineteen, we
turned around and worked hard to get rows and bridges
back open so people go see their families and get
their jobs. We went through the pandemic where we were
ranked the number one best pandemic response state. So you know,
(07:01):
we've been some tough times. And now I've just voted
for this one big, beautiful bill which is gonna deliver
additional tax leaf, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime. Now,
eighty eight percent of seniors will not pay federal income
tax now, so we're passing legislation is going to continue
to help Nebraskans just the way we did when I
was governed.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
The bigger question is how many playoff games are you
going to get in?
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Well, that's a great question because the first wild card
games are right, we're about the time we're gonna be
fighting over the government shutdowns, so they're not going to
need Yeah, probably will well, and that's a great point though. Look,
we can't have a Democrat like Damn Osborne sitting in
that Senate see voting with Chuck Schumer on this stupid
stuff that they're doing. Right, he will vote to make
(07:43):
Chuck Schumer the leader. And we've seen what terrible leadership
Chuck Schumer delivers.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Well, well, now you have.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
I stopped what you guys are both quite on that one,
Like you can't imagine what's a race? Think through my
head now imagining him in that scene.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Oh my god. The big question is everybody knows that
you have you've been fortunate the financially in life. Are
you ready to contribute to the buy out of Matt
rule now? Because he has clearly got to go, there's
no doubt.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Actually, you know what, we played good on Saturday, right,
We gave Michigan a good game and we still got
along a bunch of games left ahead of us. So look,
give the team some chance.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Here you need to worry about baseball. Football will be
around through November, but I mean the playoffs are a
week away, man.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Right, I know.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Actually, thank the Cubs have got to get it pulled
around here. We just like lost a bunch of Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
But that they've.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Had, as you know, Rosie, it's all about getting hot playoffs.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
They've got turns around. That'll be fine as a Twins
fan discussion. Senator, thank you for coming and my pleasure.
Thank you very much. Senator Pete records here
