Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Caps have a farm league team that's been doing
something pretty incredible up the road in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where
there's lots of chocolate, lots of smiles. It's ninety seven
point one WASHINGFM. We're tell me in Chili in the morning.
One of the things they do is they throw teddy
bears on the ice, I guess to raise awareness for
a certain cause. And well, ChIL they broke a record.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
They sure did their Teddy bear toss. They got one
hundred thousand teddy bears during their game. And we're fortunate
of right now to have their in game announcer Bob
Howard on the phone. Bob tell us about the origins
of this amazing event.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Well, turns out people like to throw things, and I
think that's one of the first things to come back
to is like, give them an opportunity to throw something
people are all in. Secondly, you give them the right cause.
As you kind of alluded to, we talk about supporting
Children's Miracle Network and our local children's hospital are in
Central Pennsylvania. So you have those two things. And then
the final piece and every Caps fans aware of that

(00:56):
Hershey Bear's connection. This franchise, the Heritage France, Ariage France
with an awesome fan base. It gets behind things like that.
So they decided, well, we'll do a game where we
score a goal. The first goal we score, they start
throwing teddy Bears out of the eight and then within
a short span of time, we've now exceeded one hundred
two thousand Teddy Bears in one game.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Wow, and you were there for all of it? What
was it like?

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Sweet Cudley Mayhem, as our play by play guy Zach
Fish would say too, I mean it is. It's such
a fight and it becomes an event. People start planning
now for the next year, Like they start collecting teddy Bears.
We had one fan who was personally responsible for forty
thousand teddy Bears that we're talking about, bringing two or

(01:42):
three tractor trailers they back up to the back of
the barn of Giant Center here in Hershey. So, I
mean they get into it. They love it. And I
mentioned the players too. We talk about a lot of
the Caps who've been part of this, you know, Dylan McElrath,
John Carlson, Mirashinko, these guys coming. It's a big deal
for them to be the one score the teddy Bear
toss goal and to trigger this, I mean, it becomes

(02:04):
something that is so special for them. They have their
families out on the ice of part of it too.
It's become such an amazing, i mean, world record breaking
event that it's amazing to be a part of.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
I'm reading here. Since two thousand and one, you've collected
over five hundred and sixty six thousand teddy Bears for
these kids and the different charities. I mean, that is remarkable.
What are you guys gonna go for next year?

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Probably one hundred and fifty thousand. I mean, at this point,
it almost already is like Cuckoo Banana's numbers, right. It's like,
I can't imagine how many more we're going to be
able to get. But if you had talked to me
five years ago and you said, hey, I think maybe
we'll get fifty thousand teddy Bears, like fifty thousand, so
our building, think about this. Our building holds right around

(02:47):
ten thousand, seven hundred people. I'm not good at math.
Toby might be worse than me, but that math breaks
down to a lot of teddy Bears per person. To
show up. They bring it through security, their city they're
with it in their seats the whole game next year. Yeah,
one hundred and fifty thousand. I mean at this point,
like there's no limit, it could just keep growing.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
That's awesome. Well, thank you so much for joining us today.
That certainly does make us feel good going into the weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
How can you not feel good on a Friday about
a great cause? A lot of teddy bears to cuddling
Mayhem and Hershey kisses to boot Bob Howard, the Prince
of Pennsylvania, thank you for letting us talk to you
about this story, because it just is one of those
that takes our mind off of all the snow we've
had to deal with this week.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Hey, it's the sweetest place on earth, and chocolate makes
everything better.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
That it does. However, out in California right now, this
has been a really tough week for so many people
affected by these wildfires. Complete homes, family memories gone. Coming
up in just a few minutes with Toby and Chillian
in the morning, we're gonna talk about it.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
If you had to evacuate immediately, what are you grabbing?

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Think about it and give us a call. Let's talk.
