Speaker 1 (00:00):
Great to welcome this bloke back onto the country. We
first started yearning I think in the late two thousands
when he was a tab A bookie, should I say
for the tab Karen mcinnulty, Local Labor List MP and
the Wira Rapper Golden Shares Week. Karen, I know you've
had a long involvement with that event. How excited are you?

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Very excited, very excited, Jamien, Thanks for the chance to
come on and have a chat about it. I mean,
it's the excitement is building. The shops around town have
got their signage up and whatnot, and the school kids
have been getting into it all week, so it's a
good feeling in masterd and the week leading up to
the Shares, everyone's just sill of getting a vamped for it.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Put on your bookies hat. Who are you picking for
the Open final?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Well it's you know, it's interesting because last year, of
course everyone was talking about Roland Smith getting his ninth
title and then he pulled out late to injury, which
was disappointing news for everybody. And then of course we
got a new winner in Leon Samuels. So I mean
all the talks so far is about four guys Roland Smith,

(01:09):
Leon Samuels and Tory Henderson, who was the favorite last
year and unfortunately dipped out. But David Buick, as long
as he is competing, will have the full support of
wided Upper And last year he came third and the
place erupted, so everyone'll been cheering him on again.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
We've never had a local winner of the Golden Years. Yep, Tavi,
this is the year.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Yeah. Toya Henderson is kind of the form sharer going
in there. He's been cleaning up on a lot of
the shows, hasn't he He.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Has, he has, And look, I mean, you can't discount
the form, but the thing is the way that it
works and leading into this, there's so many competitions around
the country.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
All of these guys are clicking up wins.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
They've all got that experience and it just meant it
just depends on how you go on the day.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
I mean, look at David Burerck.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
You know he came third last year and then turned
around and won the National champs. And so Roland Smith
obviously coming back, all the talk is about can he
get the night clicking up those titles now for becoming
a legend of the sport, himself and then the two
newer guys, one from the far North and one.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
From the far South.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I mean you couldn't get more of a wider spread
than that.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
So sorry, just I'm desperately trying to find the odds
at the tab for the Open Final. Who's the guy
from the south you're talking about.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
I'm talking about Leon Samuels.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Oh yeah, of course Leon. Yeah, he won it last year,
didn't Hey.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
That's right and fully deserved to as well.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
It was fantastic. God, it was such a great final
last year. The place is absolutely abrupted. So I checked
the TV website this morning and they didn't have odds there,
And I just checked before you run and I see
they've got odds out on a national circuit now, so
I assume later on in.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
The day will have odds available.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Well, poor ol Mishall's been searching desperately for the odds
and she keeps passing me a piece of paper with
Nathan Stratford on it, and I'm saying, no, he's not
the fine favorite for the Open Final. He's the favorite
for the national circuit final. And what a great share,
a great Southland, a great man. Nathan Stratford is curance.
It's a huge boon for the wire wrapper economy. The

(03:11):
Golden Shares, a lot of activity, a lot of people
coming into town, and this is a bit of a
dry run for the World Champs next year.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, well, that's what's exciting, isn't it is that the
number of competitors that have been signed up is inching
to last year, which was the highest number in a
long long time. And so I'm pretty sure that people
I've been speaking to that it's going to exceed there
and that bides really well for next year where the
competition extends by a few days and we have competitors from.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
All around the world.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
I mean, the thing with the Golden Shares is that
does attract overseas competitors especially, which is really encouraging to see, especially.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
In the lower grades and the junior grades.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
They had a strong Welsh contingent over the last few
years and Uses are coming over and a few others
as well. But next year with the World Champs, every
team has competitors and Sharing will essentially come and to
have it in mask it and again alongside the gold
Shares a big massive so you know, this will just
only get people more excited about next year.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
The Big Open Final on Saturday night in the War
Memorial Hall. There's the absolute pinnacle. But you had like
the speed share I think on the Thursday even again
Jack Vegan's becoming an expert in that field. That is
such good spectator sport.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
It is.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
But it's the thing is that people often overlook with
the speed chair is these guys have still got to
maintain quality in that as well. This isn't just about
ripping through as quick as you can. You've got to
have a certain quality standard otherwise you get to qualified.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
And so for those.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Guys to keep the stand and keep the quality of
the wall, which are courses as a core component of
how sharing is judged, and do it as quick as
they do, it's extraordinary. I don't know if anyone has
ever seen it. They should make an effort, maybe look
it up online or even be able to come along
if you've got a local competition. These guys are at
there is no question about it. They are the best

(05:02):
of the beast when it comes to the sport and
seeing it live there is nothing better.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
How's life on the opposition bench is, Karen? It must
be a bit frustrating for you. I was in the
house the other day when it all erupted over Chloe
and the lunch and Seymour and his tractor driving and
all that, and I saw Chippy in there. And sometimes
I think Chippy is a bit like a deflated balloon
in some of his media interviews. But I'll give him

(05:27):
credit where credit's due. In the house, he's a good performer.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
It's a good performer all over the show.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
I guess it just depends on how things are cut
and edited on the news extratra. But he's as good
as you can get in terms of a debater in
the house, and he's a pretty clear communicator outside of that.
And I'm already trying to book some time and his
calendar for next year to get him along to the
World Champs because for New Zealand's to host that it's

(05:54):
a big deal. I remember when it was done down
at Southland and they really put on a fantastic show
and it was a great expose of the sport but
also the region.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
And now it's our to end.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
So anytime he's done gets the host that it's.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
A good deal.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
So I'd love to see if many high profile people
come along next year.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
To promote it because whether.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
We're regardless of what side they're on the house, we've
got a raw of the Golden shoes that politics stays.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
At the door.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
We just are there to enjoy the sport and promote
the competition, and that's how we've always run well.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Nice nice pivot away from Chippy's performance back to the
Golden Shares there Karen Hey, as a bookie, what odds
would you have given the Highlanders were thirteen men at
the end of that game to get home against the Blues.
That's one of the great upsets.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
To be honest, it would have to be. I mean
the Blues were read whole paper.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
It's at least a couple of scoring things ahead of
the Highlanders. But this is always the thing that the
first two rounds of a rugby competition are always the
hardest the price, and correspondingly they're always the hardest to
bed on. They'll be exactly the same in the Heartland
Championship if anyone reckons want to get a better value,
couple of weeks and always the hardest price because you've only

(07:03):
got a little bit of information a couple of preseason
games and they don't really mean anything because people try
new combinations and all that sort of stuff. And I
suppose you're only asking me this question, Jamie, because then
you want to go on and tell me how you'll
get with which I presume were Yeah, and.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
I took I took the Highlanders unders and I did
throw out Finn early on my Saturday morning show, so
I'm I'm claiming a glory for that one. But I
reckon the bet for the NPC this year is the
Southland Stags. You see, they'll be captain by Shawan with
you another up and comer in New Zealand rugby. So
go and put the house on the Stags to win
the NPC. If you're an optimist at a little bit,

(07:39):
I don't put the house on. Good on you, mate,
Thanks for your time. Karen mcinnulty there who is mad keen,
no other word for it on the Golden Shears very
knowledgeable on sports betting as well.
