Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're off to Colloton School in the man or A
two region. There we find Phillin country host Hamish Mackay.
He's on the tools today for the Rabobank Good Deeds promotion.
Lots of Rabobank people and Hamish only you, I think,
representing the country. I hope you're doing the hard yards
on our behalf.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Well, I'm just doing what you would have done if
you were here, only just muscling in and giving it
everything in between, partaking in smokeo and a bit of
bed and it's just fantastic. Well in a great atmosphere.
We don't need a little rowboat to Childer. Actually the
range finest date away building this it's an old fashioned
BMX track and part of the RABA Bank Good Deed.
About one hundred and twenty groups and organizations wanted to

(00:41):
win this day and Coleton School will be the lucky way.
It's just fantastic.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Hey, Hamish, you need to help me with my man
Or two geography. Where is the Colton School? Sorry? I
should know so cold in school?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
You just take you go up the big main drag
of fielding towards Cheltenham, you know, up towards the ram
country and Keywa tea and the beautiful dairy farming of it.
And just as you take the first turn to your
left to heat the wolves sheelting them, you take a
quick right and you're about three ks along the road.
So you know, demographically the school probably has a good
chunk of tawny children who like to get the rural experience,

(01:14):
if you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Hey, homish, that's Sam strawn country.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Isn't it Sam?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
If you carry it on up the roads, you end
up at Ian and Steat Strawn's farm up there, Sam's
where Sam made his name as a farmer and a
footy player. Exactly not too far away.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Okay, So, because I like these days if there's like
a bit of planting a native trees, you're not doing
any of that today. It's just hard Yard's building the
BMX track, is it?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Look, looks you'll catch me out if you ask me
what trees are being planted. Much wiser than man than
me might know that as we continue on this interview.
But there are trees, lots of planting, lots of tracks
being made. It's just yet so it's an all round day.
I mean there's probably you know, there's a huge group
of rather ban seen here and a lot of locals

(02:00):
chipping in, and it's going to look magnificent.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Okay, just before I get Todd charteris on, I want
to talk to him about some challenging head ones at
the moment for farming Blues Highlanders tonight. I'd love to
pick my Highlanders. I'm not sure I can. They're going
to get that one. I think that the game of
the round is obviously going to be the Chiefs Hurricane.
So what do you think?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, well, I risk getting I've got a bit of
a fat lip from another thing at the moment, I
risk getting another one if I don't pick the Highlanders
against the Blues. But I think the Blues back to
Full Street will be hard. But Chiefs Hurricanes, you know,
I think the Chiefs will love to hit them. I mean,
I think the Hurricanes have been playing this beautiful rattle
down in front foot sorty, you know, and ruber love
has to be our tea and that's beyond argument. But

(02:42):
you know, I think the Chiefs just across the board,
there aren't too many weaknesses out there, and they tend
to start turning the screws about this point of the season.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
It'll be a beauty. You know.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
That's as good as it gets.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
And you've got to be keen if you if you're
a Crusaders follower like Big stew Low, they're on tomorrow
night at eleven fifty five pm, five.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
To midnight on a you'd have to be a very
staunch Crusaders see yet one of those that the horse
is running around the stadium to be up at eleven
fifty five night.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Good on your Hamish, you keep doing the hard yards
on behalf of the country. Let's just pass the phone
over to to here we go right to Todd charteris
the chief executive of Rabobank's never afraid to get his
hands dirty. He's an old sharer in a past life.
Hello Todd, you've got a good turnout as Hamoush doing
the Country Proud. I'm talking about our radio show.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, good Jamie. You know Hamers is definitely doing country proud.
Is I think he's done more work this morning than
you've done better?

Speaker 1 (03:40):
All right, Okay, I cracked the jokes on this show, Todd.
You've been you've been busy on the spade. So I
called it a BMX track. I've got that wrong. Is
it just a bike? Sorry I should know more about this,
but what are you actually doing there?

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Well, I would call it an old fashioned BMX track,
but apparently they've got more modern names now, Jamie. But
you and I would call it a be next track.
It's going to be a fantastic facility for the kids here,
and it's great. We've got about twenty five of our
crew here mustling in and it's great what you can
do with a lot of people in the community. Engagement's

(04:17):
just great. It's going to be really good to come
back in a few years time and see what they'
chief you've think.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Yeah, and in interests of close for twenty twenty six
next year, this time next year we'll have ten winners.
Well obviously just do the Field Day or the Good
Deeds Primo winner at one place, but they're going to
be ten winners next year getting ten grand each.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Yeah, we're super excited by that and you hopefully we
can announce that in the next next couple of weeks.
I know the judges have had a tough job again
and obviously I don't get involved in that, thankfully, but yeah, look,
it's it's really looking forward to doing that and up
in the ante really because there's some great rural communities
out there that we can just make a difference.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
So yeah, and I guess the work day, the working
b day will depend on the winners, whether it happens
later this year or early next year, Todd, I just
want it while I've got you. This is a report
that came out from a n Z I'm going to
quote them another bank to you, but they're saying the
war in Iran has fundamentally changed the twenty twenty six

(05:20):
outlook for New Zealand agriculture sector or for the New
Zealand agriculture sector, creating a difficult and uncertain environment for
New Zealand farmers. It really has, hasn't it.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
Oh. I Look, the whole world's changed as a result
of it, So no one would be surprised by that.
And you know the impact and ongoing impact on fuel
and energy costs, fertilizer without a doubt that it's going
to have an impact. Fortunately, majority of businesses well pretty
well positioned to manage toe that. And you know, as

(05:53):
a bank, which we work with our clients, absolutely it's
changed things those for sure and certainty that exists and
we've just got to manage to try and manage within
that and it's pretty challenging, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Are you getting farmers climbing and at the moment on
fixed straights or have they missed the boat there?

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (06:10):
Look, I think we've seen over the last few months. Yeah,
some farmers fixing out a bit longer term perhaps have
been short termed up until that point. So and obviously,
you know, there was a lot of cash flow come
through this week with two payments from Fonterra, So a
lot of our clients are still working through actually what
they're doing with that in terms of maybe breaking some

(06:33):
fixed rates or looking at some other investments on farm Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
What is the old saying the best for them investment
is to repay debt. Well, it's a guaranteed return.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
What's that?

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Sorry, that is a guaranteed You get a guaranteed return.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Oh, that's right. But some of you know, some are
also taking the opportunity to invest in other things which
are also pretty good on returns as well. So the
good thing is people have got options and that's what's
it's all about.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Yeah, there's a lot of uncertainty around the world, but
the good news as you alluded to. Tight is the
fact that a Fonterra alone injected five point four billion
into the New Zealand economy this week. So you know,
rural New Zealand is in good heart and thank Evans
for it. Places like Colleton School.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Eh yeah, I couldn't agree more. And you get reminded
on days that Jamings War. It's about we're here with
farming families and out there working and also great to
see our local MP from here. Sue's Redmain out on
the shovel too, helping us. So everyone's here. It's the
place to be well.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Good honor Susan is a good farmer. There you go, hey,
thanks for your time, tired and enjoy the rest of
your day.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Thanks Jamie, cheers and support of us through the country.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Looking forward to announcing the winners for this year's Rabobank
Good Deeds Promo, ten of them getting ten thousand dollars each.
What a great contribution from Rabobank to the rural economy
of New Zealand as well.
