Speaker 1 (00:03):
All right, it's Way Up. I'm here and Tabari Banks
is back again. Let's go back again on Way Up,
but also back again on Bellier. Season three is premiering.
I got a chance to get the first three episodes.
You know, did you see it?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
I haven't seen it yet. What do you think?

Speaker 1 (00:17):
It so funny that we get to see it.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Before we do?

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yeah? Man, First of all, you know, I love the show,
and our producer was telling you before we started the interview.
Your interview up here on Way Up was one of
our biggest interviews. So thank you for that.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Oh yeah, of course. I mean that's that's shocking to me.
That's beautiful. Really. Yeah, shout out to the fans. I
mean it's all love. That's why we're still here.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
I think, personality wise, people like you also.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, thank you man. Try to be just myself. You know.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
How's it feeling for you on a show that you
know we all saw when you first got the call
that you got the roll in here? We are ready
for season three? How do you feel?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I mean it's crazy that it's like we're two years
in almost going on a third year now, you know,
I say thank you to the fans all a thousand
times over, you know, I mean a million time over
because we wouldn't be here without them. But it feels
really good. You know. It feels like we're stepping into
our own era, our own shoes, and we're taking the
story like, you know, somewhere else with this. So it's beautiful,
beautiful feeling.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
How long has it been since season two ended? It
feels like a wow for some reason.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Yeah, because you know, we went through a strike, you know,
to act this strike and strike, so it's been a year.
It's been a year.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Oh wow?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, yea.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
So did you have to be like okay, because I
know I had to go back and be like, what
happened last sears? You know they give the recap. Yeah,
but I was like, let me go watch the last
episode from season two before I get into season three.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah. I always watched. I always watched the before we
start filming. I watched the seasons just to get in
the mode, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, And there's some good topics this season coming up,
and you know, I'm not going to give anything away,
but entrepreneurship is also a big topic I can see
for this new season. Big Mensa's on the show.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Oh, shout out to big mensa bro who's a pleasure
to work with.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Yeah, yeah, talk to me about that because there's a
lot of guest appearances there always happened, but this season
it feels like a lot more than usual.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Absolutely, yeah, I mean it's a blessed Excuse me, I'm
gona take one drink real quickly.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
It's not ta kila, guys.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
It's just coffee. No. It was a blessing to have
the many appearances. You know, people love the show, you know,
blessing in itself, but you know, like people wanted to
go and be a part of it, you know. So
we had the We had the honor to have Vic
Vinca on the show, and he brought his energy to
it. It was amazing. And we also have a beautiful appearance

(02:21):
by Joseph Marcel, the original Jeffrey. So I think that's
gonna be very, very shocking for people.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
To watch Jeffrey's going through. He kind of a gangster.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah well yeah, well and we'll see how the old
Jeffrey plays it to It's honestly gonna shock you. I'm
not gonna lie when when I when I read the script,
I was like there's no way to doing this, you know,
and so I'm I'm very excited for that.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Do you read this script like, uh, you know, episode
by episode or do you get to see what's gonna
happen throughout the season.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
So we're upside by episode so we have no idea.
So why by the time we got episode eight, I'm like, yo,
there's an episode eight is crazy? Like you know what
I mean, because we don't know where it's going, you know,
And somehow the writers on the show shot up to
Carla Banks, Waddles and all the whole writing team. You know,
they're so tapped into the story. But also it feels
like they're so tapped into our lives and they know

(03:10):
where we are in our lives and they intertwine that
with the show. And that's why I like it feels
so authentic. You know.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I'm trying not to ask questions that will give anything away. So,
but we do know Marlon Wayin's and we saw that
last season that's your father, You're a stranged father on
the show. There's a lot of different topics on here,
and I'm wondering which themes you relate to, you know,
because I know we see rich people problems. And then
we see Will's problems on the show, right, and his

(03:37):
problems are so different. But I think we also have
a tendency to believe that just because somebody grew up privileged,
they don't have issues. And Carlton has a lot of issues.
But so do you know Phil and Viv.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, yeah, it's true. I mean, you know, it's like, yeah,
we see people in these privileged positions and we don't
think that they're going through the stuff that they're going through.
And even for the courage to Carlton, like you know,
like growing up rich black kid in bell l Air,
Like you know, he's a fish out of order in
his own regard, right, Like Whereas to Will, it's like
coming from Philly to bel Air, He's a fish out
of order and his own regard as well. And so

(04:09):
like everyone has a story and and so I think
we have we do a great job with highlighting the
different perspectives and the different the different paths that black
people have, like you know what I mean. Like we
always say, you know, black people are on the monolith,
you know what I mean, And so we really try
to highlight that with this show.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
It's also hard being a black person growing up around
rich white people.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yeah. I could never imagine that.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yeah, you know, because I didn't go to private school.
I went to public school first and then I went
to private school. Yeah, and it's definitely tough, I think,
making that transition from you know, relating to a character
like like Will coming from Philly and then go on
to bel Air. I know, for me, like I was
in a program where we had to go from public
school and it was quote unquote underprivileged youth going to

(04:50):
a private school where all these kids families have money
and things like that, and it's a culture shock. You know.
It was a culture shock for me absolutely being able
to try to to fit in in some way and
never really feel like you belong to.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yeah. And I think a lot of people go through that,
and that's so many different people's experiences. That's mine as well. Like,
you know, I grew up around all black people, you
know what I mean. I went to school with all
black people my whole you know, elementary school, middle school,
high school, and then I went to college and there
were so many privileges, like you know, white kids around me,
like you know, and I had a great experience like
getting to know them and also like trying to find

(05:24):
out where I fit in within this world, this new
world that I'm in. And I think a lot of
people can relate to that.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
So did you feel like they were any type of
like because there would be certain things that would happen
to me, They'll be like, oh, you know like the
rest of these black people, it's like hold on, slow down, Yeah,
you know, I am a black person. Did you experience
certain times yeah, you know where you felt like, I
don't know if I feel comfortable.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, absolutely, at.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
The times when you feel like maybe I should have
said something.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Sometimes it's hard to be exceptional, you know what I mean,
Like you know, like especially as a black person in
a world that like doesn't really accept you, like they
regard you in a way that like how they view
like others, you know, other black people, and so like, yeah,
I definitely experienced that for sure, Like you know, just
being a guy that you know is really really cares
about my craft, really really like intentional with how I move,

(06:10):
you know what I mean, and that they didn't really
like understand, you know, they didn't really see that a lot,
they didn't have an example of that, and so like
you know, the way that they would interact with me
was interesting.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
But even being an athlete, because sometimes there's a stereotype
yeah you know, yeah, or all of those things.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
All of those things.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
And I also feel like you've been living at your
music dreams.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Too, Yes, ma'am, Yes, dam I have a single coming
out It's called Weekend Drive on the sixteenth of this month,
August sixteenth. Yeah, so well go get that and listen
to that.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Yeah, I say, you're doing You're at the champion Oh man, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
That was aaz no. No, that was like, you know,
that was very very last minute and you know, shout
out to Peacock. They hit me up. They did'ted some
talent to sing on the Macy's Day parade.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
That's what he was doing. You know how many people
were watching. You see so many videos.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
I'm like, I can't turn that down. That's crazy. Like
I was living on my wildest dreams. It was wild
because you know, we're taking a float, you know, through
the streets in New York and there's thousands of people
like that go out and watch, and it's super cold,
and like, I'm smiling the whole way. Do you have
to smile the whole way.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Through in space said you got a smile, smilling.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Way the whole way through. By the by the end
of it, it was like an hour. By the end of it,
my mouth was hurting. It was crazy, but it was
a great experience. I'm not gonna lie.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yeah, and you played metro booming.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yeah yeah, man, So you got that call.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
So twenty one Savages movie is a biopic.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Right, well it was a it was a it's a trailer,
but it's a music video, okay, So it's like, you know,
the music video was the trailer for his project. It
was a great rollout.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
I thought it was. It was I was like, is
he doing a whole full feature movie?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, so basically, so it was crazy. So that was
last minute as well too. I get a call from
my manager. He was like, Yo, Donald Glover wants you
to be in this twenty one Savage music video. I
was like, Yo, how can I say no to that?
Like I love both of those artists, and you know,
I filmed it. We did. It was one day shoot
and when it came out it was a trailer and
I'm like, Yo, did they shoot the whole movie?

Speaker 1 (07:55):
I'm like confused, When is the full length feature.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Because I didn't shoot anything else, you know what I mean,
So it was just that. So yeah, but it was
it was a trailer. It was actually a music video trailer,
but it was dope the way they rolled it out.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
So it was Donald Glover to hit you up for that.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, he my team. Yeah that's dope.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
So did you know it? Like, did y'all know each
other prior to that? Or is it?

Speaker 2 (08:13):
No?

Speaker 1 (08:14):
No, it's not even an audition process for you anymore.
It's just a call and come do this.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
It depends on the project. It depends on the project.
But that was that was super dope because I you know,
I grew up loving Donald Glover, childish gampino, you know,
and you know I got a chance to really sit
down and talk with him and getting this kind of
getting his head and during that shooting it was like
it was he was super dope, like super down to earth.
We rolled in the car together. It was beautiful.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, how has life changed for you? Because you know,
we saw you years ago up here, well not that
long ago because the show's only eve been around for
like a year and a half, but early on when
I started way up and you came on the show,
and now it's just like everybody and some people are
just discovering the show too, while some people have been
watching it from the first season. You know, it's also
nice when people are like, I'm just now getting up

(08:56):
on this. It's really dope. That's why streaming is so
amazing for people to be able to catch up on
past episodes. But what has life been like for you, Like,
how has that adjustment been because you've been getting other
roles at the offers.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, I mean it's been a blessing. It's literally a
dream come true. You know. You grow up, you know,
having these dreams of like you know, I want to
do this, I want to do that. For me, that
dream was you know, telling stories, and I get the
opportunity to do that every day, Like you know, I
get the opportunity. And sometimes it's hard, you know, sometimes
you have to wake up at four or five am.
But like it's all worth it in the end, you
know what I mean. When you see the final product,

(09:27):
it's like this, this is what I do it for.
You know.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Now I want to know your personal opinion on certain
things that might happen on the show, Like you see
his relationship Will's relationship with his father, his father, who
is this strange and then he does actually end up
going to talk to him. What are your personal thoughts,
And this is just for me seeing like, you know,
the first episode of this of the new season, what
are your personal thoughts about in real life? What you

(09:51):
if that was your friend, if what was your friend
and his father was kind of absent from his life,
didn't do much for him. What would you say to
somebody if they were like, I don't know if I
should go talk to my dad and his dad is
kind of an ass.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, for sure. I mean I think it's important to
rekindle any relationship as far as like when you have
your parents here on this earth, like you know what
I mean, it's it's important to like, you know, try
to mend that relationship if it's broken. And I felt
like that's what that's what Will like, you know, there's
like a lot of people that I know, like you know,
who have like absent fathers, and and it's not a

(10:27):
like for a lot of people, I've realized that it's
not any animosity towards like this person. It's just like
I don't know this person, you know what I mean,
and so like, I think that's where Will was in
the moment, was like, I really don't know you, and
I would love to get the chance to know you
since you're hearing you know, bel air, and so I
think that was what's most important to him. And I
feel like, you know, getting past all the animosity and

(10:47):
all the hurt and all the pain forgive and for
being able to forgive. And then once you get past that,
like those moments are so rewarding, Like it's like, oh, okay,
I can see you more as a person now.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
I wonder how a father could not want to be
in there child's life. You know. That's always been crazy
to me.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, I mean that's that's that's the concept that I'll
never understand.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
But have you have you been watching the Olympics?

Speaker 2 (11:07):
I have? Yeah, Yeah, I was actually out in Paris.
Just stop yesterday.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
Talk to me about Paris and what that experience was
like while you.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
Were out it was two live, it was it was
Paris is like one of the most beautiful cities in
the world. It's one of my favorite cities now, Like,
I definitely want to go back asap.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
I got to go to a wedding there in a
couple of weeks. I was like, thank god, it's after
the Olympics.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Yeah, you've ever been there.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
I've been a long time ago, but only for work
when I used to work for Wu Tangtcha. I've been there,
like to the venues where they have shows, but I've
never had a chance to really just chill explore.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yes, you go to South of France. Beautiful, beautiful.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Okay, I've been to South of France. Okay, I forgot
about that. I've been to can and I've been to
San Chope. I went to Magic Johnson's birthday party.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
So when I tell you, I was feeling real fancy. Yeah,
but I did feel a little bit like a fish out.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Of water too exactly. But you know, Paris is parents
is beautiful. I was like riding bikes around the whole city.
It's a very like walkable city. But I also feel
like very comfortable riding bikes around there, like in New York,
Like I don't know if I'm a hop on that bike,
you know what I mean. Yeah, it's too much going on,
but in Paris is beautiful.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
You know, I feel like I'd be more comfortable here though,
because I know my way around. I feel like in Paris,
I don't know where I'm going. I might ride my
bike and end up someplace I'm not supposed to be.
They do have hoods in Paris.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Absolutely, yeah, once you get off that circle. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
but you know that it was It was interesting because
a lot of people, a lot of the locals in
Paris had left due to the Olympics, you know, because
they were like, we don't want no smoke with the outsiders,
and so it was interesting like viewing Paris like kind
of empty in that way.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Who would you go with?

Speaker 2 (12:36):
I went with me and my manager, and then my
two of my homies were out there as well, and I.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Don't know, yeah, you know that's when people everybody goes
to get engaged and stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
That's the city. Yeah, city of lights, but yeah, city
of love for sure.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Do you feel like it was a romantic vibe for you?

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Absolutely? I mean, like, you know, the view, like the
view is beautiful, Like you know you're on the balcony.
Like my view, I could see the Eiffel Tower, like
on it's nighttime, the lights are up. It's just like
it's really it's a gorgeous vibe, you know, and the
architecture out there is gorgeous.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
You know what's hard about Paris too is knowing where
to stay, like what hotels because there you think New
York hotel rooms are small. Yeah, Paris is, like I
think it's worse as far as like how much money
you have to pay for a hotel and how small
the rooms can be.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
It's a blessings and one and another thing about like
the my new life, you know what I mean, maybe
hooking me up, you know with the hotel room. So
I had a smooth had a small little sweep you
know what I mean at the living room and the bedroom.
So I was you know, shout out to Peacock for
that at the NBC, you know that was beautiful.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
How do you feel now seeing how well everything has
worked out? Because anytime a show starts, you never know
if it's going to be like a season two, a
season three, how it's going to continue. But for you,
like if this is a dream come true honestly, because
a lot of shows don't make it.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's a blessing to get to
do what I love, like you know what I mean,
And that's that's the thing like I can't say like
thank you to the fans enough because like they're keeping
us going, Like you know what I mean, Like we're
here because of people were against us in the off
the jump, you know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Because you know what, it's also hard because that's the
show that existed that was so popular, exactly, and so
everybody had their coming. They come in with preconceived notions
about what it's going to be. They come in like
wanting to hate exactly.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
But I understand it because when I heard that they
were doing their Fresh Prince reboot, I was like, there's
no way they're really doing that, you know what I mean.
But when I read the script, I was like, oh,
I understand it now, and it's just a whole different take.
And I think people can see that, you know, once
you get over like the fact that it's like a
fresh Prince reboot, they're like, oh, this is Lokey, a
whole different show.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
And you have Will Smith's blessing. That's important too, because
if it would have been done without that.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
Yeah yeah, man, I don't know if it would have worked,
I'm for sure, yeah, but it was amazing to get
his blessing too. And you know, big ups to Big
Will too, like he definitely like you know, he gave
us all the tools that we needed to succeed.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
I saw y'all pranked him too, So that was interesting.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
Money we did.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
We did a reboot of that up here may know,
and we got him. He was the last one and
he didn't realize till the end, but it did very well.
Think you always help us go viral?

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Oh gotcha, got you, got you. It was not my
idea at all, but I enjoyed doing it.

Speaker 1 (15:05):
Now. Another thing that's happening on the show is Uncle
Uncle Phil and their marriage, and it looks like there
might be like some little issues there. But I feel
like every marriage is going to have times where it
goes through like some hums and some certain things happen.
There's a situation where there's a little kiss that happens

(15:26):
where Uncle Phil. Do you think that's something he should
tell his wife? It wasn't. Uh you know, let me
see where your morals are.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
No, so check it out, Like no, I mean for sure,
I mean, honesty is the best policy. Like you know
what I'm saying, Honesty is the key to any relationship
and trust. You know what I'm saying, And once you
break that trust, it's hard to gain that back. You know,
it's the easiest thing to keep, but it's the hardest
thing to get back, you know what I mean, once
it's broken. And uh, and so yeah, I think it's

(15:59):
important to be honest in any relationship, you know what
I'm saying. But it's it's that's a tough one, you
know what I mean. It's a tough conversation to have,
but I think it's it's worth having. You'll see how
I can't wait?

Speaker 1 (16:09):
Yeah, this is all things we don't know, Yeah, exactly,
you know, and even when you watch the trailer, you
get a little bit of an idea of certain things
that are going to be happening. Open marriage, Yeah, conversation.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
That is insane. They know. I'm telling you. The writers
went crazy this season. It's a very spicy, hot season.
I'm not gonna lie, very sexy.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Can you see being married to like one person for
the rest of your life?

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Yeah? Absolutely, Okay, absolutely.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
I feel like you could do it.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
Yeah, just the vibes that I get from you, I
could see that being you know, seems like a nice
person still even in the midst of all this.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
I appreciate it. Yeah, that's what I'm not trying to
keep that, you know what I mean. But yeah, I
mean I want a big family. I want like eight
nine kids, Like I'm trying to have like a family
like you know what I mean, eight or nine kids,
like I'm trying to have like a family.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
Yeah, that's a lot of work.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
I'm trying to have like a compound, you know what
I mean. Like I want that family treat to look crazy, Like.

Speaker 1 (16:59):
Yeah, job as a mom is going to be the
job that she's going to have to have because I
can't see how you can have eight or nine kids
go to work.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
You gotta be that's a strong woman. That's a strong woman.
But yeah, I'm gonna hold it down to you know
what I mean.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
Well, now that you've gotten here, where do you see
yourself going? I know you have other movies Bad Genius.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
Bad Genius coming out October eleventh.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
October eleventh. What are some other things that you're working
on that we should know about?

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Well, yeah, I got my music project coming out in
October as well.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
Oh that's good time.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Yeah, you have a good time, you know what I mean.
I got a single coming out August sixteenth, So it's
all good that the music is happening as well. And
