Speaker 1 (00:01):
It's Night Side with Dan Ray. I'm telling you Boston's
news radio.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Thank you very much, Al Griffin. We head now into
what we call the twentieth hour here on Nightside, and
this is an actual twentieth hour. I only worked three
days last week. I had a couple of days off,
and so well, it worked no days last week. Actually
the week before I had Thursday and Friday, the third
of the fourth offs. We called it the twelfth hour. Look,
(00:29):
my favorite twentieth hour is Brushes with Celebrity, and it
was funny. Last night. We had on chaz On Palmonary,
an actor who had a one man show tonight at
the Chevalier Theater in Medford. As I think all of
(00:49):
you know that's such a great facility. He's a one
man show on what's called the Bronx Tale. So I'm
sure some of you are on the way home listening
to the show and probably enjoyed that show. So I'm
just going to open it up tonight. I thought earlier
that I might say, well, this is the halfway point
(01:11):
of summer, and it really is. It's frightening to think,
but if summer goes from Memorial Day until Labor Day,
which I think it does you know Labor Day, back
to school fall has started, even though summer lingers until
the twenty first of September, most years the mid weekend
(01:32):
of July, which this is it when you think about it,
it's you know, today's July eighteenth. I guess you could
have argued maybe last weekend was the mid weekend, but
summer's half over. So I was thinking about doing something
on have you accomplished what your goal was for this summer?
(01:56):
And if you haven't, what is the goal left? But
that's too complish. I want to know everyone has met
a celebrity of some sort. I have met my share,
and most of them are pretty nice people. Every once
in a while you run into somebody who's not great.
So what I'm going to ask you to do is
(02:18):
join the conversation. Who have you met? Doesn't have to
be like you met someone and had dinner with them,
or that would be great if you did have that
set of circumstances. Who was the celebrity that you met?
And I'd like you to focus just on one who
either impressed you the most, maybe someone who treated you
(02:42):
not as well as you would have hoped. Basically, they
aren't all positive experiences. I don't want you to go
out of the way and trash anyone, but I want
to know who have you met and what would the
circumstances where you on a plane sometime and someone say
next to you, he said, I know who that person is.
(03:02):
Were you walking down the street in Boston. I've heard
many funny stories about people who literally bumped into celebrities
and in some cases actually pumped into them quite hard
coming around the corner. So one one person. I remember
one bresh for celebrity a few years ago talked about
meeting the actor Forrest Tucker. He was best known for
(03:26):
F Troop. When We're All Young, He and Larry Storch
are in F Troop. That was the story about the
Cavalry Force Cavalry Unit. So so I just want one story.
One celebrity could be a politician. We're likely going to
be a sports star. I mean most of us have
an opportunity to meet someone from the sporting world. Maybe
(03:48):
you met an actor. Maybe maybe you went to the
play tonight at the Chevalier and you met the actor
who we spoke with last night, who did the one
Me and Show a Bronx tale Chaz Promontary. Again, he's
not Robert de Niro, but he's worked with Robertsonniro. So yeah,
(04:10):
and maybe for you the celebrity, the biggest celebrity you
meant was a mayor, or a congressman or a senator.
I know people who have called in and I've talked
about meeting we One person met Prince well now King Charles,
formerly Prince Charles. So that's that's the rules. It's pretty easy.
(04:30):
Your your recollection is what's most important. And I like
to call it the good, the bad, and the ugly.
And if someone treated you well and was kind to you,
post for a selfie, maybe gave you an autograph, spent
a couple of minutes with you and chatted, I think
that's pretty cool. So that's the challenge. Six one seven,
(04:53):
four ten thirty triple eight nine to nine ten thirty.
Also again six one seven, two four ten thirty is
these is the way to get through. I would tell
you those lines are packed, okay right now, however, six
one seven, nine three one ten thirty, don't tell anybody,
but both those lines are open. And if you dial
(05:15):
right now six one seven, nine three one ten thirty
you'll you'll be probably number four, number five. So let
me start it off with I'm going to go north
of the border. I'm going to go to Paul in Ontario. Paul,
who is your celebrity?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Well, Dan, this prop the Boston but my all top
hockey player and he he performed defeat in nineteen seventy
six February seventh. I believe it was scoring six bolls
in the forests the Boston Bruins and all school then
(05:55):
the three or eleven to four, and Paul.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
You're breaking up us, up on us here? Can you
get near a Windbury? That would be really helpful?
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Sure, much better, much better. So who's the player that
scored in seventy seven against the Bruins? What team? Give
me a team?
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Well, he plays for the Toronto He played for the
Toronto Maple Leafs, and he was played against the Boston
Bruins that night. He scored six goals and four a
fifth for ten points, which is still an NHL record
six and probably a record that won't be broken.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Who was the poor goaltender? You said? This was in.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Seventy seven, seventy sixth February the seventh of seventy seven,
who was the.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Poor goaltender Ross Brooks or someone.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
He played one game for the Bruins. His name was
David Reese.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I might have remembered that game. He
was a call up. Uh and and yeah, okay, uh
he gave up eleven He he didn't play the whole game.
If he gave up eleven goals, I'm sure they must.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
He actually did. Jerry Cheevers, I believe, had just come
back from the w h A at that time and
he was on the bench Lee Don Cherry, who was
coaching the Bruins. Sure Severs get his gin to take
over from Race and Chievers looked the other way. He
(07:32):
wanted no part of it. So it was a very memorable.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Okay, and again I don't know what you're doing here.
Are you walking around, Paul or are you in a car?
Speaker 3 (07:43):
I'm I'm right by, I'm right by a window.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
But okay, well you broke up on us again. Give
us the player's name because I'm dying to figure out who.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
It was who scored the ten goal ten point. Yeah,
Darryl Sittler. Oh yeah, good player number twenty seven. And
I had the opportunity to meet him in a work function. Function. Rather,
I was a sales rep for a newspaper and there
(08:11):
was a function that he was honored to be at
and got a chance to speak to him, and he
was the most humbled, down to earth human being you
could imagine. He grew up in a small town in
Ontario called Saint Jacob's which is where the Mennonites are,
(08:32):
and he just turned his family values. And he's still
an ambassador for the Maple Leafs and he's quite frequently,
you know, interviewed, and he's still still that same down
to earth guy. And you know they stay never meet
your heroes. Yeah, I was very fortunate in that I
(08:53):
did meet mine, and I was not in any way
disipployed it.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Boy, I'll tell you you were right. It is. It
was February seventh, nineteen seventy six. Played for the Maple Leafs,
scored six goals at four assists. They won eleven to four.
He literally had a season.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
The sixth goal, believe it or not, he scored from
behind the net.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
It could happen, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
And you know he made a joke about Dave Rees
and I hope this isn't considered in bad taste. But
he actually said that Dave Reese was so struck up
by the by the by the game that he actually
stood on that train track, but the train went between
his legs.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Oh, yeah, that's a that's a joke. I get it,
I get it, but.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
I know it could be taken in only game.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
I remember Reese, was that his only game?
Speaker 3 (10:00):
It was Yep, it was And the two of them
met later in years later and became good friends.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Yeah, and that was good to hear.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Yeah, yeah, he's he's Reese is still alive. I'm checking
him out right here. Yes, no, but he he did.
He had an NHL record of seven wins, five losses,
and two ties, two shutouts.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
So let's then, I'm then I'm mistaken about that being
his only game. Perhaps it was his last.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
It's best known for the Sittler game. But he uh,
he would. He had a college career at the University
of Vermont. Uh and he he had a few He
played in the in the NHL with the Bruins, and
that year he was seven five and two and he
(10:56):
goes against a three point two two say percentage eight
seventy seven, and then he went on he had a
minor league career as well. So yeah, he played with
the Boston Braves, the old AHL team, and he had
he had two NHL shutouts, so he you know, you know,
fourteen games, two NHL shutouts. That's not bad. So we're
(11:17):
resurrected Dave Reese's reputation as well. He lives in Wilder, Vermont. Wow,
that's where he lived for a while. Later he's living
in Greenville, South Carolina, so he's living the good life.
That was a great one. That was an absolute great one, Paul.
I'm gonna let you go, but you started us very strongly.
Thank you so much.
Speaker 6 (11:38):
Well.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Dan, always a pleasure to speak to you. You have
an outstanding weekend.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Thank you you to Paul. That was a great one. Wow.
Darryl Sittler ten points, six goals and four assists. A
nightmare game for Dave Reese, but a game of a
career for Darryl Sittler. Great player only line six, one, seven,
ten thirty. Coming right back on night Side, more brushes
with celebrity ladies. Don't let the men dominate, Okay, coming
(12:04):
back on Nightside.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
You're on night Side with Dan Ray on Boston's news radio.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
By the way, just as a final footnote to Paul's call,
that was Dave Reese's last NHO game. He uh, He
stayed in the net for the entire game. Took one
for the team as it were giving up eleven goals.
That's a lot. It's a lot of goals for one game.
(12:31):
Let's keep rolling here. We're gonna go next to Joe
and Belmont. Joe, you're next on nightside. Go right ahead, Joe.
Who's your brush with celebrity.
Speaker 7 (12:38):
Birth Today's my birthday. I got two years of wisdom.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
On your Happy birthday, Joe, Happy birthday. Another another July
baby Joe kids.
Speaker 7 (12:48):
With Bill Scharmon at the Boston Goten.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Oh, Bill Charmon, Great great Boston Celtic, A contemporary of
you must have been a young man when you did that.
Speaker 7 (12:58):
I was a and I'm also a friend of mine.
The Minneapolis Lakers in fifty eight or fifty nine, the
NBA Championship. We got all the Celtics autographs except for
one guy, Ben Swayin.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Wow you got you got Bill Russell's autograph too.
Speaker 7 (13:21):
Bob Colcy, Frank Ramsey, Tommy Heinzn, Bill Sharman, All the
players except for Ben Swayne.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Wow, I hope you kept that program or whatever wherever
you got those those autographs.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
I lost it. Dan. Oh no, so you wereth something today.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Oh I'm talking that's big money. That's big money. Joe.
Look down the basement, check the attic. You never know. Okay, Yes, Dan,
thanks buddy, Happy birthday.
Speaker 7 (13:50):
Joe, Thank you, Dan, Bye you soon, good night.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Let me go to matt in Brighton, matt next on nightside,
Go right ahead, matt Hey.
Speaker 8 (13:58):
And happy birthday and Joe and uh, surely that program
would be worse some than Russell. Great player wasn't a
big signer. Yeah, I've definitely had my brushes having worked
in baseball. I think you know a little bit about
you know, oddly enough, I used to live in the
Florida Keys, and on a whim I was able to
(14:18):
be in a movie and that was with a small
scene with Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill.
Speaker 9 (14:24):
And those are those are the two biggest ones.
Speaker 10 (14:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (14:30):
Yeah, And you know, I'll say very quickly McConaughey and
it's not a brush and what I'm gonna say about
Jonah Hill, but Matthew conaughey is such a gentleman. You
know five people in the scene came up, introduced himself talk.
You know, is it's high on Matt? You know, okay, wow,
the elephant in the room. Everybody knows who that is.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
Jonah Hill.
Speaker 8 (14:51):
I can't say it was as uh, he would not,
not not at all to.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
What was your in the movie, Matt, I was a.
Speaker 8 (15:03):
Background, just on the background essentially. It was filmed along
the water. Yeah, and it was to be like a
quote unquote tourist.
Speaker 9 (15:12):
Eating ice cream. It was a little more heavy set
at the time. And to be honest, typical tourists look
in person, and that's what they wanted. And I was
perfectly fine to take the money and enjoy my time
and have quite the experience doing so.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
Did what was the name of the movie beach Bums?
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Beach Bums? And did that movie do well?
Speaker 6 (15:33):
Oh no, no.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
No, no, no, mohonna. What year was this? Would you say?
Speaker 8 (15:41):
This would have been twenty eighteen after it was probably
released in twenty nineteen, but it was filmed at least
that said of the scene in twenty seventeen. I want
to say, toward the end, you know, Snoop Dogg was
in it. I actually did get a chance.
Speaker 9 (16:00):
Just say hello to him.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
Martin Lawrence.
Speaker 8 (16:03):
Zach Efron is a fresh direct.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
The movie is called The Beach Bomb.
Speaker 9 (16:10):
The Beach Bumbs.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, the Beach Bomb. Uh.
Speaker 9 (16:14):
And it's quite the it's a funny movie.
Speaker 8 (16:21):
But no, no, this was not a movie that was
going to win any Academy Awards.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Yeah, I know you got a zach Efron was in
that movie. Jimmy Buffett was in.
Speaker 9 (16:30):
The movie Struggle before he died.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yeah, yeah, wow, this is uh. Now have you ever
gone and checked out? Are you an I M B
D You know, I am dB. Did you get a credit?
Speaker 8 (16:50):
Probably not in the I M D B. I never
To be honest, I've never looked. They made a book
about the background of the whole filming, and there's a
photo or two of me in that. They sold the
book for like somebody selling it on eBay for eighty bucks.
Speaker 9 (17:07):
I don't really want to pay any books, and I'm
not going to.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Yeah, you know what you look like. But McConaughey was
a good guy. He's pretty laid back. He's from Evalde,
Texas where they had that school shooting.
Speaker 8 (17:19):
You know, yes, and he spoke really you know, he
did a press press confidence in you know the office
where the president gives his briefings and so does his
whatever her name is, you know when they ever when
they have the dating briefings, And he did that and spoke. Really,
(17:40):
he really is a gentleman. He just period stuff. He
does a lot of charity work. He really just over
all that aside. I can't speak highly enough about him,
want to.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
So, so, Matt, I got to ask you this as
an extra in a major movie, because that's a major movie. Sure,
how much did you.
Speaker 9 (17:57):
Make for that eight and sixty presidents?
Speaker 2 (18:00):
No? Really?
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Yes, yep?
Speaker 2 (18:04):
What what was? How did they figure that out? I
assume you did not have to remember of the SAG
after guild.
Speaker 8 (18:12):
No, so, if you're in three productions or more background
or not, you can apply for SAG and then you
have to pay something like one thousand dollars a year,
and then you would be able to get paid somewhere
in the several hundred dollars range. However, one of the
five other people who were four other people who were
(18:35):
with me was a SAG and he asked the ad
assistant director, you know, I'm SAG And he said, well,
we're not accepting any sag.
Speaker 9 (18:46):
It's just paid per hour.
Speaker 8 (18:47):
If you want to be in a movie with some
well known names. Oh you know, look, I would have
done it for free.
Speaker 9 (18:54):
To be honest.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
You fell around eight dollars and sixty what'd they do?
Give you a check or they give you cash?
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Give me a check.
Speaker 9 (19:01):
That's my credit right there.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
Yeah, okay, well, you know what, here's the thing that's interesting.
You're in a movie. It's as simple as that. Sure,
next time I get a chance, I'm gonna rent the
beach Bumb and see if I can see you. And
of course I was in a movie way back in
the day called Reversal of Fortune. I got a credit
and a speaking role. Uh, and I am I am
(19:26):
db'd in that cast. So you you rent Reversal of
Fortune somenight and I'll rent the beach Bumb Okay, thanks man.
Speaker 8 (19:35):
Yeah absolutely, I'll send you a photo of my scene,
just a still shot. I did have a speaking role,
but they do not put it in, so I did
not get paid the extra noun but I would have.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
All right, Matt, thanks man, good night. Okay, let me
get one more in here before the break. We got
to kind of move a little bit. These are three
good stories. Darryl Sittler, Bill Sharman, The Celtics, Matthew McConaughey
and Joan the Hill. Yikes, Steve is at Fall River. Steve,
you were next on Nightside.
Speaker 10 (20:04):
Welcome hey, Dan and Steve from Steven Lee.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
How are you hi, Steve? How are you absolutely that
this is yeah? Okay, I didn't know you has Fall River,
but you must be driving. So who's your brush with
celebrity Steve.
Speaker 10 (20:21):
I'm gonna just be a quick three. The first one
is my wife and I went to France one one
year after we had our two daughters, and we were
walking around Mamar in Paris, which is the artist colony,
and I spotted Jack Ballance, who used to be a
star on television. Oh yeah, sure, yeah, the Greatest Show
(20:42):
on Earth.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (20:43):
So I pointed him out to my wife and I said,
let's go over and say hello. Tell him how much
we enjoyed.
Speaker 2 (20:49):
Was it he like had Gun? Wasn't he have gun?
We'll Travel or something like that.
Speaker 10 (20:54):
He was in a number of different movies but at
different shows, but the only one I can remember is
graded Show on Earth.
Speaker 7 (21:00):
But he went over and I.
Speaker 10 (21:02):
Introduced myself to him and told him how much I
enjoyed it, and he couldn't have been more degrading to
us and mean, and he basically just wanted us to
get out of his way. He didn't want to talk
to us about anything. So these things happen.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
You just never know.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
What was he was he what? Let me ask you?
Was he just sitting there or was he in conversation
with other people? Was there any reason?
Speaker 3 (21:26):
No?
Speaker 10 (21:26):
I believe he was walking by us, and I was
walking by him and I saw him, and I just
excuse me with the glance. Could I just say hello
to you? I am, you know, very very happy to
have watched it and the shows you were on. And
then I got just basically, So that's number one.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Number two is a.
Speaker 10 (21:46):
Guy that I worked with and I'll tell you in
a minute what it was about. But he's probably one
of the finest gentlemen, the most charitable person that I've
ever known, and he is basically a true legend and
he does it no, sir, okay, So this is Bobby
(22:09):
Orr with him in the roy Foundation. Yeah, we worked
year the year trying to raise money and having golf
tournaments and Bobby would come every single year, and he
was so kind to everyone. He would give you the
shirt pop of his back and it's just the nicest,
one of the nicest people.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
I've known Bobby for many many years since his playing
days with the Bruins, and UH the best, the single
best professional athlete in terms of the way he can.
I've got a lot of friends or athletes, but but
Bobby is his head and sholders above his player and
also as a human being. And who's the one more sure.
Speaker 10 (22:48):
One more so? This is just a regular guy, hard working.
UH made a success out of himself, has had several
different jobs and life and actually at one point in
this life actually gave up probably five or six years
to do something that was very important to him. And
(23:10):
I would say, this is the one celebrity that if
I had to emulate anyone in the entire world, this
would be the person. So who is it?
Speaker 2 (23:21):
We say?
Speaker 10 (23:23):
His name is Dan Ray?
Speaker 2 (23:25):
Oh man, you are too kind, you are too kind. True,
we have worked we have worked together. I know exactly
what you're talking about. You you are in music, someone
was involved heavily in music. And we have worked together, Yes,
But the.
Speaker 10 (23:45):
Things that you have done for me, and it's the
things that you've done for your listeners. And it's also
the fact that you gave up years of your life
to try and get that man released from prison. This
is something that most human beings wouldn't take the time
to do. And you're the guy.
Speaker 7 (24:01):
So Steven, you have the guy.
Speaker 10 (24:04):
You have the celebrity that I would want to have.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
You league.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
That I've never been. I've never been more honored and
more embarrassed simultaneously. But even if you mentioned within, yeah,
well you've done great work too, and people you know
know Stephen Lee and Steven Lee, Jewelers and uh and uh.
We were able to collaborate a couple of times, and
(24:29):
I wish we had more opportunities to collaborate. Steven, You've
done me great honor. Thank you, my friend.
Speaker 10 (24:34):
I really do appreciate a great way to end the week.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Thank you A fabulous way for me as well. Thanks, Steve,
appreciate you very much. Well, let me tell you I'm honored.
We got a news break and I got a couple
of open lines. I got one at six one, seven, two, five, four,
ten thirty and I got one at six one, seven nine.
We'll be back on night Side right after this.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
You're on night Side with Dan Ray on w Boston's
news radio.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
All right, let's keep rolling here. We're going to go
next to try to get everybody into who we will.
I promise if you're on the line, stay right there.
Tom and Middleborough. Tom, you're Brushwood celebrity. Who would that be? Tom?
Speaker 1 (25:18):
Him?
Speaker 11 (25:18):
Dan?
Speaker 4 (25:19):
It's Tom. I'm a first time caller.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
All right, welcome, Thank you. You never know what it
prompts people to call. First time.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
Welcome, Thank you, Dan, honor to speak to you. Longtime listener,
Thank you, Matt And interviewed Ted Kennedy two thousand and four.
Speaker 6 (25:37):
He had gotten a ton.
Speaker 4 (25:40):
Of money for the city of Brockton. I've done some
radio on and off over the years.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Yeah, you sound like you have a radio You got
a deep radio voice. I wish I had the voice.
Speaker 5 (25:50):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (25:50):
I wish I had your brains. So Ted was there
talking to the media about a ton of money that
he brought in for a building very close to city Hall.
It was designed to help immigrants and low income people
(26:11):
to get an education to become citizens. As far as
I know, it is still an agency there. He met
us all at the library. I was selected first as
the news director. I was so surprised to see how
he looked. He was a lot shorter than I thought.
Terrific gentleman. Sat with me for fifteen minutes. I recorded everything.
(26:35):
He was just how immaculate of a speaker he was.
I ran up to the station after talking with him,
put it on sound bites, and I had it on
the air before the newspaper he's published.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
So you're a good competitive journalist. I like that.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
Yeah, And it was a great honor.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
I've interviewed Senator Kennedy, you know, while he was alive
in Boston, many times in Washington, in his office in
Washington during the campaigns of nineteen during the campaign of
nineteen eighty in Illinois and Pennsylvania, and I got to
know him very well.
Speaker 12 (27:18):
And I didn't disagree with I didn't agree with everything
that he said, but he was always gracious and kind
to me, and we had a pretty good relationship, pretty
good relationship.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
And so absolutely, yeah, Well, you know, Tom, thanks for calling.
And as a radio guy, A doubly honored that you
would call, and a doubly honored that you're a listener.
I mean that serious.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
Thank you I have learned so much from listening to you.
I still do some radio and Attleborough today. I do
a talk show there. Do you really in Providence?
Speaker 7 (27:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (27:50):
I know some folks from DZ from years ago and
originally from Upstate New York. A Yankee fan. Please don't
hate me.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
No no, no, no no. We're about to Upstate New York.
Speaker 4 (28:02):
Was just up there for a big birthday bash in
my family. Broome County, Bingham to New York.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
New York used to be a Yankee Yankee had a
single a farm team there for many.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
Years they did Yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
No, absolutely. And what station are you working on? Let's
give you a little plug here?
Speaker 4 (28:20):
What are you in the air war and Attleborough? You've
interviewed a lot of folks there, Jim Hawkins and Paul
Herrou who's.
Speaker 2 (28:30):
The mayor down there.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
So I've had all them on and we continue to
entertain and inform Bristol County and surroundings.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
So w are and when'd you talk to? When'd you
talk to?
Speaker 4 (28:44):
AM thirteen twenty. I'm sort of a fill in guy.
I was on every day, but I'm also a medical
blood courier, which I'm doing now. I carry blood the
six different states. There is not a hospital from Cara Bou,
Maine to Albany, New York that I haven't been in
at least forty times. Wow, caring blood.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
Well, thank you, that is that's very very important work. Tom.
I hope to hear from you more often. Okay, I
mean that serious? Sure, hope we do. Thank you, Dan,
appreciate it. Tom, thanks so much. Honored by your call.
Thank you. Let's go next to Dave in Boston. Dave,
You're next on Nightside. We're talking about brushes with celebrity Dave.
(29:27):
If Dave's not ready, let's put Dave on hold. We'll
come back to him in a moment. Cheryl in Arlington, Cheryl, welcome,
next on Nightside, Cheryl, how are you tonight?
Speaker 13 (29:36):
Good Dan?
Speaker 14 (29:37):
How are you time?
Speaker 13 (29:38):
I have been called I'm the one that lives in Boca,
but I'm up here in Arlington.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
Oh absolutely, I know who this Cheryl is. Sure well, welcome,
welcome back.
Speaker 13 (29:48):
Ye. Thanks.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
So.
Speaker 13 (29:51):
In January I went to the LPGA golf tournament put
on by the Hilton Sure Company. Yeah, and I was
so excited to learn that some of the Red Talx
players were going to be playing and also Dylan Dry
but I didn't get to meet her, but we got
(30:13):
to meet my girlfriend and I. We got to meet
Derek Low and he got off of his golf cart
and took our phone, gave it to his drivers and
took pictures with us. They were so kind to us.
Oh my gosh, I'll tell you it was.
Speaker 9 (30:32):
It was awesome.
Speaker 13 (30:33):
I was like I for months, I was walking on
the air. I said, I should die happy. But the
even better one was Kevin Mala. Oh my gosh. Oh
he was so great and like I talked to him
like I'm talking to you, like it was. It was incredible.
(30:56):
I said to my friend, I was like, you never
thought I'd ever get to meet these guys, because I
said to him, I said, oh, you know, we're such
big fans. I was there for the World Series and
blah blah blah, and you know, and he was just
so gracious. Again he took my phone and you know,
took a picture with us and just he said, that
was quite a ride, wasn't it. I said, yeah, it
(31:18):
was fun, you know, I.
Speaker 15 (31:20):
Mean, they were just so nice.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
Oh my god. I think his phrase was cowboy up,
wasn't it right? Well, he does a lot of media.
He's a pretty personal guy. I've never had a chance
to meet Kevin.
Speaker 13 (31:35):
He is he is. I mean, he had such a
crowd around him and he took so much time, and
I thought that was just so nice, you know, because
you never know how these people are now golfing. I mean,
but he was having more fun than he was interested
in the game.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
I think, well, a lot of a lot of those
A lot of those guys are smart. They I mean,
you know David or He's as someone who I think
is very outgoing.
Speaker 13 (32:03):
I met him too. I went to a meeting great
couple of years ago in Cambridge and again Big Puppy
was so nice and took my phone, took a picture
of me and my son with him, and I was
just like that was amazing.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Yeah again, you know, look some of the guys, you
get him on a bad day, but most of them
are pretty decent people. I mean, you don't want to
approach him, you know, you know from you know, before
they get up to bad or before they're walking out
to the mound. But I remember being being in the
diagout at the Red Sox Pedro Martinez's first year. My
(32:41):
son was probably ten years old and Pedro you know,
walked out of the clubhouse and up the runway and
happened to be probably the first people who met him
that opening day morning, and he could not have been
more gracious to my son. So, Cheryl, great to hear
your voice. Glad you're back into and please keep in touch.
Speaker 13 (33:02):
Okay, I'm misser his well, Dan Well, you have a
good fun. Okay, take chairs, good.
Speaker 2 (33:08):
Night, good night. We got to take a quick break.
I'm gonna get everybody in. Chris, David, Steve and Carol.
You are all set. I promise we have one line
opened six one, seven, two, five, four, ten thirty. What
a nice group of people tonight, except for Jack Palance.
As Steve said, from my friend, uh Steven Lee. We'll
(33:28):
be back on Nightside right after.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
This Night Side with Dan Ray. I'm b Boston's News Radio.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Gonna get everybody. Everybody gets in. Let's go to Chris
in Wakefield. Chris, you're next on Nightside.
Speaker 9 (33:42):
Welcome, Hey Dan, how you doing doing great?
Speaker 2 (33:45):
Who's your brush with celebrity?
Speaker 6 (33:47):
Chris Well?
Speaker 5 (33:48):
I was fortunate enough to have an uncle who worked
on the Bowl Gang at the Boston Garden.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
Oh yeah, that's gonna open some doors.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
Yeah, back in the day when you could do some stuff.
The first two were a Bruins playoff game against Montreal,
and I left just to get downstairs to get a drink,
and coming at the opposite way was Woody Harrison and
Michael J.
Speaker 11 (34:12):
Fox.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
Wow, that's good.
Speaker 5 (34:16):
That could not have been nicer. You know, they were
there for Cam Neely. I think they were both in
Neely's wedding and vice versa. Yeah, stopped and shook my
hand and said, go Bruins and just the nicest guys
you could find.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Yeah, Michael J. Fox married a girl from the Cape,
from the Vinyard mother's vinyud Oh.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
Okay, And I didn't know that, yes, yes, yeah, yeah,
ye anything. And the other one, when we were much younger,
probably about ten years old, was Andre the Giant. Same thing.
We went to wrestling and my uncle said, you know,
the place is cleared out an hour before and he said,
you know, stand here, and this is where they coming to.
You know, it was back in the day. They went
(34:56):
out down the back of the building, down the ramp
and uh, he come over and I was a little nervous.
I was still a little kid. And uh, he was
the nicest guy you could ever meet. You know, it
took time to talk to me and my brother Sugar.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
What year, what year would have that been? Oh god, well,
what what year were you born?
Speaker 5 (35:19):
You said you intend I was, I was seventy four,
So eighty four.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Eighty four? Okay, Uh, well, good for you, good for you, Chris.
I gotta I gotta keep rolling. But those those are
three really good ones. And they all circle around the
old Boston garden.
Speaker 5 (35:37):
Did thank you getting back there for a day.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
Huh, I would.
Speaker 5 (35:41):
Give I have a great weekend YouTube.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
I appreciate it. Gonna go next, Steve and lambister, Steve,
I got four or three behind you. You go right ahead, Steve.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
All right.
Speaker 6 (35:50):
It's it's kind of a double uh. Back in I
was twelve years old too, uh, nineteen sixty seven family,
our buddy families we went to for the summer. We
(36:11):
were traveling. We were in Europe and in France, leaving France,
and we were leaving out of Nice. And we're my
friend who was my same age as in the other family.
We're just you know, twelve year old delinquents and running around.
(36:33):
It was just a big boy warehouse that wasn't and
have gates and things, okay and so and you know
short attention spans and I go, Dave, looked, that's that,
said Sullivan. So I went up to my mother and
I said, we said Sullivan, can I get Can I
get his photographs? She was like, whatever you do, leave
(36:57):
me alone?
Speaker 5 (36:58):
Oh sure.
Speaker 6 (37:00):
So we went up to I well, I had like
a year of French from junior high. And I went
up to there was like a restaurant bar and I
asked for could I take the bar nap and le
crayon pencil. So we both went up to at Sullivan
(37:21):
and he was with us woman who I found out
later was his sister. She was nagging him. But so
I said to mister Sloman, could get your autograph?
Speaker 9 (37:34):
He goes sure.
Speaker 6 (37:36):
So he says, what's your name, said Steve, And when's
your birthday? Said ab alertieth. He says, he writes down
the dear Steve, Happy April thirtieth, say hello to the
boys in Atlanta. Farmy said thank you, And I went
back to my mother. I said, wow, it's like, yeah,
(37:58):
look I got his autograph. What's the means? Say hello
to the boys in Atlanta? We're from Newton and uh
he's drunk.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
Hey, Steve, I I love the story, but I got
three more. I want to give them a shot too.
Thank you, my friend. That was a great call and
a great a great memory. I can remember Ed Sullivan absolutely,
Thank you so much. Big. That's a big name. David
and JP. David, he gotta be real quick for me
because they got two more behind you.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
Go ahead, David, Yeah, yeah, real real quick.
Speaker 11 (38:29):
It was Joe and he's not a big guy. He's
not a big celebrity. But I kept asking him, I,
what are the five what are the five tools that
a baseball player had to have it? I kept going
over to him because I couldn't remember, because I had
too much to drink and I couldn't remember.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
You gotta hit, you gotta hit the power. You gotta
be able to run, you gotta be able to throw.
Speaker 11 (38:49):
And as I'm being shuffled out the door with the
guy with his hands unleast my shoulder pushing me out,
the dog going hit for power, hit forever, Frank Inde
has the ability and he don't love your body.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Thanks Thanks Dave. That's that's a different Freshwood celebrity. Thanks
you much. Good night. Let me go to Carol and Randolf.
Carol want to get you in one more and go ahead.
Speaker 15 (39:13):
Carol, Hey Dan, how are you doing.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
I'm doing?
Speaker 15 (39:16):
Oh liked one of your callers just mentioned one of
the guys I ran into. It was probably in the
late eighties, early nineties. I was up in Albany working
with a colleague of mine. We went to work, came
back to the hotel, stopped for a drink. I sat
down at the bar and it was the eighties, a
sunken bar, and the girl that I was with, her
(39:36):
face just was like in horror and she's nudging me.
She's like, look look. It was Andre the Giant, sitting
right next to me. He was Youngers didn't know who
he was. I was a huge wrestling fan when I
was a kid, and I had a conversation with him.
He was just delightful.
Speaker 2 (39:57):
True friends with the Giant. Leads to night.
Speaker 15 (40:01):
He was judging a beauty contest. Oh my god, he
had a gin and tonic in his hand. You could
not see the glass.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
All right, Hey, Caroly, I got to get one more in.
I love your stories. That one of the best of
the night. Thank you so much. Thank you great all right,
Kate and Valley Forge. Kate, I've never heard from you

it me quickkay.
Speaker 14 (40:46):
Mickey Mantle got him. He was grouchy, but he signed
it for me. And what was that Christmas? I was
waiting for friends by the tree at Rockefeller Center. I
saw President Nixon walking with some aids and I walked
up and I said, Merry Christmas, mister President.
Speaker 2 (41:00):
