The Warriors have returned from their much-needed bye week.

They’re now preparing to take on the North Queensland Cowboys this evening in round 14 of the NRL.

Piney caught up with assistant coach Stacey Jones to discuss how they spent their week off, and how they’ll continue the form they found beforehand.

He told him that picking up two wins before the bye week set them up well, and they were able to get some players well rested, and get some of their more experienced players back in action.

EDB Go to Brighter Things. The Warriors back in action tonight.
They faced the Cowboys in Townsville, looking to extend their
winning streak to three matches.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Last train out for the Dolphins.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Now, let's just spread it right, no and bet cats
tis come for.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
The spiral bomb?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
What it is?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
A listener for one minute to play want to cats water?
Cats has to play fullback for some time. Walker were
ten seconds to play?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Well, this is a catch. He went just like last week,
Eleven players out.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
And the Warriors win. Incredible, really, the Warriors betting the
Dolphins twenty four to twenty off the back of the
you want to have the Panthers the previous weekend in
Magic around twenty two twenty. They've had the buy now
to try get some players back, which they have for
tonight's outing against the Cowboys. Assistant coach Stacy Jones is

(01:12):
with us out of Townsville. Stace, thanks for joining us.
Did the buy come at a pretty good time for you?

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Jason? Yeah, you know it did, and we we get
a few players back on board, so you know, we
pick it up two ones before the buy really set
us up to have a good break and get some
players well rested and and some players it will be
back in action for us, some experienced boys.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
The wins over the Panthers and the Dolphins heading into
the buy both achieved, as you say, with with an
undemanned squad. How pleasing were those two victories.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Yeah, they are very pleasing and we really needed it.
We've been disappointing for for a month there of footing
and Newcastle away and then the Roosters away as well.
You know, a couple of disappointing losses there. And to
be able to go to Magic and pick up I
went against the you know, the benchmark team and the Panthers,

(02:10):
was was very exciting. And then coming home and we
had quite a few players out playing against the form
team and the Dolphins and picking up a one there
was really good. And then heading into the bi so
they they were pretty important ones for us.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, with so many players out and a lot of
them seemingly as well, you know, quite late in the piece,
what did you see from your roster in terms of
the depth that is available to you.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
That's quite interesting really because the players that came in,
might have been only one or two were very limited
in our experience. But you know, the players that actually
came in and they had had some decent experience on
their side, so you know, we were confident, you know,
that they would do a job, an adequate job, and

(02:56):
they knew their roles and they knew clearly what it was.
And we sort of looked at the little things a
lot of our game, them all the standards that were
probably letting that stif out, and these are the things,
you know, able to the other boys coming back into
the team that they've got to and they live up to.
So yeah, even though we had players out, we had
players that, you know, we were confident that could do

(03:18):
a job because they've done it before.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
And I did you talked about that windless streak before that?
What were you starting to dig pretty deep to try
and find some solutions.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Not really, I don't think we had to do too deep.
You know, we've got a you know, we've got a
few key parts of our game that we look at
and go, well, you know, if we get this right
and get that right, we know we'll give ourselves a chance.
And in a couple of those areas, we know that
if we get them right, we win. Games are footy,
you know, And it was really just going back to

(03:49):
that part of our game. And I won't gather too
much what that is, but it's pretty simple stuff, but
it's it's not easy to do, but it's easy when
you look at it, but it's but it's hard work
and we probably just fell away in those parts of
the game. Just simple thing like like, you know, woman
kicked the ball? What does our chase look like? You know,
when we make contact on a player? How does how

(04:11):
how's our rout control? You know? So so simple things
but they're hard to do.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
How have you assessed Timarty Martin's performance in the in
the Seven Jersey last couple of games.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
He's been really good. It's been really good for Mighty
to get that that experience of being without Sean there.
And you know, I thought he had a really good
combination with Shanelle the other day with Sale being on
our left and riding on the right where he's a
bit more comfortable. So look, he's handled the job really

(04:45):
well of being our main half on ball, and you
know it's given him some really good confidence. So yeah,
he's done a really good job for us.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Have you got any any sort of broad ballpark of
when Shawn Johnson might be might be back and available
against days.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Look, I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I don't
think it's too far away. You know, he's very close
to the team at the moment with as far as
training goes. He didn't didn't travel with us, but you know,
I'm guessing he's not too far away. So it's been
good for Sean to be able to fishen up a
little bit with his body and also the way he

(05:21):
plays a bit. And that comes back to us as
coaches helping Sean out and taking pressure off him and
watching to Marty and shanew do what they do. You know, certainly,
I know Shawann's pretty excited to get back into the
team and being able to look at players like to
Marty and Chanelle that can take a lot of pressure
off them.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
And what about Roger two of us as sheik. We
haven't sent him since the night's game. I don't think
any any update that you can give us.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Again, Roger is training closely with the team. He didn't
come away with us, but you know, I don't think
he's too far away. Roger. I know he's he's chomping
at the bit to get back in the side. So
you know, all going well for us. It's going to
create a really good headache for so we better pick
a team when when you know all these players are available,

(06:11):
So it's you know, it's a healthy position to be
and you know what we were, you know, a few
weeks ago. So yeah, Roger again, he he, I don't
think he's too far away.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Good to hear. And the man who is back, your
captain tall who Harris. I know, no man's bigger than
the jersey or bigger than the team, but how good
to have you have your skipper back.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
Ah, really good, really good for us. And it's been
a really good break for Tau who you know, he
struggled a bit with his body and carrying injuries into
games and and you know us expecting him to play
big minutes in the middle was a big job for him.
So there's a lot of pressure taken off off to
coming back into the side. And you know, he actually

(06:50):
looked really good at training during the weeks. So we're
excited to have him back and know that he's going
to add some real value to the to the.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Team wells, appreciate your time, Stace. Thanks, indeed, all the
best against the Cowboys tonight.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
All right, thanks Jason chair, No, thank.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You, Stacy. Stacey Jones, then assistant coach of the Warriors.
Seven thirty tonight they take on the Cowboys in North Queensland.
