Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks edb.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Huge piece of football news during the week Wellington Phoenix
goalkeeper Alex Paulson securing a move to Premier League club
Bournemouth and.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Brilliant stop times of you that don't know Alex Paulson
steers forward.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Toulson the Natis Dixon.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Again.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Unbelievable man three off his tops this season.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
The incredible last season for Alex Paulson and a huge
reward for him. I moved to the Premier League with Bournemouth.
Shortly after this was made official. During the week I
caught up with Alex Paulson asked him first of all,
how long this had been a goal of his to
move to a top overseas league.
Speaker 4 (01:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Well, most aspiring young footballers have had the dream to
actually go and play in the Premier League and it's
and it's fantastic for me to get this opportunity to
one day play in the Premier League as well. And
I'm just fortunate enough to have Bournemouth, you know, invest
the time resources towards me to give me into an
(01:23):
opportunity to play and have that action plan.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
So that I can you perform my best.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Tell us about the conversations you've had with Bournemouth, what
it is about them that you like, and what they've
kind of laid out for you as far as an
action plan is concerned.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Yeah, so it was the intention.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
I discussed myself and my agent discussed the plan with
regards to where does my future lie with the Premier
League with Bournemouth as as well, and that's why they
signed me with a four year deal so that they
can organize a idea about where my play development will lie.
And I think it's just fantastic because they really showed
(02:00):
a lot of intent and that's what kind of drawed
me towards Bournemouth.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
And in terms of that action plan, what will the
next four years look like?
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Have they given you an indication that they really want
you to be pushing for, you know, a spot on
the Premier League squad? Is this what we're talking about
over the next four years.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, So ideally we haven't actually discussed too much yet,
but I think the fact that they're signing a four
year deal has given me a hope that they actually
intend to put me out and push me towards being
a number one goalkeeper at the Premier League.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
But obviously it's a line process.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
It's a long journey, so I'm trying my best to
make sure they I'm putting myself in the best position
possible to learn, adapt.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
And develop as much as they can.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
How do you reflect on the last twelve to eighteen months,
you know, a year ago, say in the off season,
in the last a league season, to now where this
amazing news has come. How do you reflect on the
last year?
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Also surreal it's been.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
It's been a rollercoaster of emotions, going from the start
of pre season where we're playing in the Alien Cup
as well, all the way through to you know, arguably
one of the biggest crowds in one is the Phoenix's history.
So it was a long journey and I'm proud of it.
I'm proud of the boys as well to go along
that type of journey with them as well, and it's
(03:20):
it's just fantastic to go from moment extremity to the next.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Your family, can you tell us about their reaction when
this news sort of started to float around and it
has been confirmed.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Yes, No, it was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.
As well.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
My family were e static. My brother was over the moon,
and then my mom and dad just couldn't believe it.
So I'm so happy to give them back the sacrifices
that they made for me and I'm really appreciative of that,
and I'm proud to officially now sign with Bournemouth and
they can be proud of that.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
How much has Wellington Phoenix Football Club being a part
of your development? What have they done that's allowed you
to get to where you are?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Well at the age of fifteen when I moved down
to Warrington from Auckland. They've given me a lot of
invest with regards of the resources, the time, the effort,
and I'm really appreciative of that. And it's great because
they've actually seen my progress coming from the academy all
the way through to the reserves to sign in my
first contract now seeing me sign with Born within the
(04:20):
Premier League, and it's just fantastic. I wouldn't be in
this position without all of their help, their sacrifice, the
resources that we have at insaid as as well, it's
as fantastic and it's just great.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Have you thought about what you're about to embark on?
You know some big stadiums around the place, the Premier League,
A lot of people call it the biggest league in
the world. Is this a bit of a not a
pinch me moment necessarily, but a really exciting time for you?
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
No, as you said, it's very exciting. Sometimes you kind
of have to take a step back and take it
all in. But at the same time, I'm just really
appreciative to you take this opportunity, and I kind of
want to make sure that now I can start to
work harder. And like I said before, and as I
was speaking with my fam as well, it's almost like
a restart button for me. It's kind of going over
(05:10):
there now to still have to prove myself. So I'm
just fantastic. I'm just grateful for that opportunity.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Have you replied to all your messages?
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Still going on, so I think I might chuck my
phone away for a day or two so so that
I don't go my socials.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
But at the same time, I'm very.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Grateful for, you know, the support and the constant.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
The constant talking and the.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Just the support that the show throughout the whole season
and throughout the whole journey. I'm just so appreciative for
so I'll make sure that I can try my besticket
get back to as much as I can.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Congrat really speech to day for you.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
No, thank you, Bone, I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
That's Alex Pulson I spoke to during the week on
confirmation of his move to Premier League side Bournemouth. Just outstanding.
Use this and he is a player with a mass
of Ceilinglex Paulson, Ray says on text bying a young
Paulson is an awesome goalkeeper. He reminds me of Peter
Barnetti from Chelsea. I remember Peter Barnetti. Well, I've seen
(06:15):
footage of them is but a little bit before my time.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Ray.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
They called him the cat, didn't they. Peter Barnetti didn't
get as many games for England as perhaps people thought
he might have. Gordon Banks was there around about the
same time. But yeah, I can see the comparison you're
making their Ray, And yeah, there are high hopes for
Alex Paulson become just the seventh player from New Zealand
to play in the Premier League. Yes, there's a wee
way to go. This is just the first step for him,
(06:40):
but it is an important step and to go from
basically not playing at all a year ago, playing second
fiddle to Olie Sayle at Wellington Phoenix, to having an
absolutely outstanding season and earning a move to the Premier League.
It's just a meteoric rise for Alex Paulson.
