Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Let's get you across the Tasman are Australian correspondent Adam
Peacock is with us as always.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
How are you mate, good tiny yourself?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'm very good, thanks mate. I want to talk some cricket.
But before that, State of Origin two Wednesday night, Queensland
convincing thirty eight teen winners in Game one, what chance
New South Wales square up in Melbourne on Wednesday night?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Oddly enough their favorites. I don't know how they've come
in after the teams were selected, and I think everyone's
fallen in love with the seventeen that New South Wales
have selected on paper. And this has happened so many
times in the history of Origin that people look at
New South Wales and go, wow, what a team, what
a bunch of players, and then Queensland come out and
(00:53):
act as a unit and get the job done. So
I'm not calling it either way, but I think it's
a borderline ridiculous that New South Wales are favorites in
this game, despite the fact that they brought back players
like the treill Mitchell Murray, etc. I think Queensland. I
think it's a fifty to fifty call, with maybe the
tipping towards Queensland.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
The home advantage, I mean, home advantage is certainly a thing,
isn't it. But but they're thirty eighteen loss that was
in Sydney, wasn't it. So the New South Wales has
got beaten soundly beaten at home, didn't they?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Yes, But everyone's kind of wiped that result and how
it happened on the basis of New South I was
playing for seventy two minutes with twelve men, which I
can get. But Queensland didn't play that great and still
won the game convincingly in the end. So okay, they
scored a few late tries through fatigue, but just how
(01:47):
the game was played. The strikeout that Queensland have is
quite frightening. They're on again. They look a quicker, more
nimble side and if they can control New South Wales
through the middle third of the field. I think you
said I was going to have some issues, but the
game's down in Melbourne Neutral Venue allegedly. I don't know
who's going to be supporting who down there. I think
(02:08):
a lot of people will travel but yeah, it's a
really tough one to call, and I can't say with
any confidence at news soth well' justpite being a news
soth Walshman that they're going to get it done down there.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Before we move on. Will they fill up the McGill
Will it be full?
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah? I don't know yet. They're saying that one hundred thousand,
but that's without any real intel on the ticket sales.
I reckon they'll fall a little short and maybe they
might make a drive late to I think they did
it in Sydney actually to give two for one away,
which would be stoked about if you bought your tickets
early and pull payful freight. I don't know where the
advantage is and all of that, but things are changed.
(02:43):
I don't know what it's like over there, but with
everything in life after COVID, everything's changed, but to the theater,
the movies, to a sporting of it. People buy tickets
really really late now, So we'll wait and see what
rolls up. Either way, it's going to be a great occasion.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, looking forward to it as always. Over here, Let's
move to the T twenty Cricket World Cup. Five ones
from five for Australia, most recently via Duckworth Lewis spungled
Is yesterday usual suspects to the Ford, Travis Head, David Warner,
Marcus storn Is, getting your runs atam Zampa as your
top we could take a Afghanistan tomorrow, then India before
the Seames. You're in pretty good shape, aren't you.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, yeah, it was. I wouldn't say nervy. It was
just not quite there until the midnings of bangladest they
could have posted a decent side and made a score
and made it difficult for us, and then we lost
two quick wickets. But then the rain came and we
were always ahead on the Duckworth Lewis whatever they call
it now system, so we're ahead on runs and that
(03:40):
stayed that way when the game was called after Australia
batted eleven overs. But yeah, we're in good neck. In
Afghanistan they're going to be tricky, they're a good side,
and then India, so I'll have to get a bang on.
As we saw overnight, England had a fantastic first up
winning the Super Eights over West Indies and then get
rolled by South Africa. So nothing's given in these Super
(04:02):
eights games and yeah, Australia will have to be right
on their game to get Afging to stand in the
next twenty four hours.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
You don't have to tell us how tricky you get
us down are over here, mate, you don't have to
reinforce that to us. We're well aware.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Slapped you, didn't they.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Thanks make the jo I'm glad, I'm glad. I referenced that.
Speaking of cricket, Marnus Labashane isn't in the squad. He's
playing for Glamorgan and the Vitality Blast in the UK.
Did you see that catch he took yesterday?
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Incredible, wasn't it? At the ground level and it's hard.
It's impossible, not hard. It's impossible to do it justice
with words and painting a picture. But I'll try the
ground level action of it. And fair play to the
cameraman to being on Marness just happen to be on
Marnus at the time, is near to him, and Martus
has seen it. It's a T twenty game. He's in
(04:52):
the deep at mid off, deep mid off and he's
spotted it off about straight away, so his reaction time
is like an Olympic swimmer, bang straight out of the
blocks and then he's sprinted like, not ran hard, not
like he sprinted at full peal for about fifteen meters
and taken the right number of steps and then at
(05:15):
the right time so full scratch one arm out and
caught it justice it's about to hit the deck and
it was a flat shot as well. It is a freakish,
freakish bit of play. And I mean it justifies how
much work Martus puts into his craft because he just
loves cricket and loves perfecting his fielding. And you guys
(05:37):
felt it, didn't you. At the World Cup? I remember
laid on in the game against New Zealand when it
was looking a bit dicey for Australia, Martus came up
with something ridiculous in the deep and not turned the
game but kind of rested back momentum towards Australia. And
you did it there. It was just amazing, wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah, it's it's such an important part of the white
ball game. And then if you're like me, you often
see this stuff. Did you have you seen Martus's catch?
Just one of the best catches you'll see. And you
hear that, say, ok, it's probably one of those you know,
on the boundary it is, but it is actually one
of the best catches I've seen in my forty odd
years of watching the game. And you've done it just
as really well. It's a remarkable piece of outfielding.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, and the first thing that came into my head,
and I'm probably you're the same as well. Find the
first word that I thought was chira attractor, because if
I did that, that's exactly who I'd be calling, because
I wouldn't catch it, i wouldn't get near it, I'd
try and dive and I'd hurt myself.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
So yeah, more and more, the first word that comes
into my mind and situations in my life now was kyropractor,
I must tell you. But you've done it well, all
right mate, Well that I think our work here is done.
Go and have a great weekend and we'll catch up
again next Saturday. A.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Finally, guess what it's doing in Sydney.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I know it's not golf weather by the sounds of it.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Mate, we have dead set and transported Sydney to the
South Island of New Zealand. It's ridiculous. Every Saturday it
turned into dun Eden We've got a few respected dun Eden.
It hoses down and it comes down sideways.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Anyway, this is not helping your golf game. I wouldn't imagine.
Good on you, matey, always always great to catch up
