Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks, EDB Talks HEB.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
This time every Saturday afternoon, we have the pleasure of
the company of Australian correspondent Adam Peacock. Today's no exception.
How are you, mate?
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Good? Piney yourself?
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Oh, very good, thanks mate. We've been talking a bit
over here today in the last forty eight hours about
Leon McDonald's departure from the All Blacks coaching set up.
You reckon Wallaby's coach Joe Schmidt might have been on
the phone to.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Him, possibly, It depends what Joe needs. I mean, if
it's a tack coach or attack minded coach they need, well,
it seems like a pretty good fit. They know each
other pretty well. McDonald's still remember him covering us up
on more than the odd occasions for the All Blacks.
So yeah, and the Wallabies are still kind of forming themselves,
(00:57):
especially with the ball. As we saw in there's two
matches so far against South Africa that the ones that
really count. I mean, obviously there was Wales and Georgia
before that, but the the heavy hitters, which South Africa
definitely are struggled to kind of find some cohesiveness. So
it could very well be an option, and I think
a lot of people in Australian rugby will be well
(01:18):
open to the idea because any knowledge that can value
add the set up over here. And I don't know,
maybe it's something that they could look at to help
out the underage teams as well across the board and
maybe he can have a remit there. But if he's
all of us Hadden available thanks to the butting of
heads with the AB's coach at the moment, well it's
(01:38):
worth a look from my perspective.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Anyway, did those make headlines over there? It was huge
news over here? Did it sort of make headlines over
your side?
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, not huge headlines. It's more about the Wallabies. But
it certainly came up in the last couple of days.
Obviously not to the degree over there because it's so
all black like, which I'm sure more than a few
people have mentioned over there that a coaching team midstream
breaks up kind of weird and you don't hear of
(02:08):
it that often anywhere, and rugby, especially not with New Zealand.
But yeah, caused a few ripples and that's where the
idea came up that maybe Joe Smith putting two and
two together, maybe we're getting five so that he might
reach out to it.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, it's an open market, that's for sure. During the week,
South Sydney and Rooster Ziicon Ron Coot announced as Rugby
League's fourteenth Immortal one hundred and forty eight premiership games
for South Sydney, hundred and nine for Eastern Suburbs. He
won four Grand Finals with South and two with Eastern Suburbs.
Was he a popular choice as the fourteenth a mortal?
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Yeah, very because he's obviously getting on of it. Ron.
He's now eighty and he's had a few cracks at
possibly getting in and this award goes back to nine
point eighty one they constructed it. He's the fourteenth, so
they don't let him in every year, but you know,
they elevate who they see fit and had a good
look at who absolutely deserves it, and there's no one
(03:01):
since the other night, since Wednesday night saying that this
guy doesn't deserve it. It was just a matter of
where he placed, who he was up against when other
people got inducted. And I think they've had a bit
of a turnover in the judging panel, and I think
some fresh eyes have looked at it and gone, well,
this guy, what he's done. You mentioned your CV there,
what he's done in the game, good human being. Everyone
(03:22):
has a good word to say about him. It made
sense on so many levels. So yeah, a lot of
people have for it and have you throw him on
Wednesday night, So.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
They don't induct somebody every year. It's just as and
when they see that it's suitable.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, And I think now the debate is how they
set some parameters around who's eligible when you should be
up for it. I personally think with because they go
Hall of Fame and then Immortal, which is the kind
of you know, the highest accolade you can get. But
Hall of Fame is still pretty good. I personally think
(03:58):
ten years if you're Hall of Fame to be becoming
an immortal, it's at least five years, ten years a
wait because going up Cameron Smith as a possible as
an immortal, but I think it was the first year
he was eligible for the Hall of Fame, so it's
like I was jumping ahead and yes, he's definitely going
to become an immortal one day, but I don't know.
(04:20):
I'd like to see them maybe go every two or
three years is going to be an immortal, and you
have to have a ten year split from when you
stop playing or when you get into the Hall of Fame,
so when you become an immortal, but you know it's
by the bye, they're going to be people overlooked all
the time, and people up for debate that should be
there shouldn't be there. So yeah, it's a hard.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
One indeed, and we're reaching the business end. In fact,
we're at the very end of the regular season in AFL,
so obviously everyone in Victoria will be all over this
and others around the place too. I made of mine
who actually lives in Melbourne, is a Sydney Swans fan, Adham,
and I spoke to him yesterday on message. I said
Swan's going to win it all and he said, we're
on fire in the first half of the season, clearly
(04:59):
ahead of the rest, but a falling the way lately.
If they can play at their best, then they'll go
all the way. But I'm not that confident at the moment.
They've too early. But like us, when we get together
for a beer, so does that handlight that does that
hand like the Sidney Swans. Has he summed it up well, he.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Summed it up very well for us at middle age. Yeah, yeah,
they did definitely had a like a three quarter season
dip where they just I mean they went to Adelaide
one night and got absolutely pummeled by Port Adelaide who
an hour on a bit of a run. They're probably
the form team going into the finals. Port Adelaide exciting
last weekend because yeah, the Swan should still finish top.
(05:36):
Something disastrous that have to happen for them to miss
out on that. But positions two, three to ten are
still open for debate. Collingwood can't make the finals after
last night. Now they won but not well enough. Freemantle
in the last game of the weekend can jump into
the eighth. But yeah, the form lines going in. Port
Adelaide are probably the best team. But Sydney on their
day are the best team because you may right, they
(05:59):
were dynamic in the first part and they just it
was really weird. I think they've turned the corner. But yeah,
they're game tonight against Adelaide, who are going to miss
the finals, will tell a lot about what they're going
to do in the finals. But the one big thing
is Piney that you got the massive chance of a
non victorian all the non Victorian Grand Final. The top
(06:22):
four part, Geelong should get into the top possibly get
into the top four, top fours, non victorian. So there's
not gonna be a lot of finals game in Melbourne,
which is.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Interesting, very interesting. Yeah, they won't like it. I won't
like it down there. Good to chat as always, mate,
thanks for taking the time. We'll catch up again next Saturday.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
That's good, Thanks Manne.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Thanks mate. Adam Peacock our regular Australian correspondent here on
