Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from newstalk 'b.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I'm just getting word that Jason Ryan is ready to
chat to us. Jason, thanks for taking our call so
soon after the final whistle? Can we start with your
overall assessment of the Test match and the All Blacks performance?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Yeah, it was pretty messy, wasn't it.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
To be fair, I thought we were, you know, we
lacked a lot of probably quality in our skill sets.
To be honest, I think there was some areas of
the game that we were good, but I think, you know,
I just don't know, we got off to a good
enough start and we weren't really where we needed to
be and which could have been potentially a little bit
(00:49):
of a reflection of a big fourteen test year calendar
by no means an excuse, but probably a little bit
of reality.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
So, yeah, it has been a big year. Not every
All Blacks team plays fourteen Test matches in the calendar year.
But as far as the cohesion, the execution, the rhythm
with ball on hand, why do you think that was
so hard to come by? At times?
Speaker 4 (01:10):
It was extremely wet, a lot wetter than we've probably
prepared for but you know, and we we just we
put our put our skills under pressure with silly passes
or offloads when they weren't needed, and just didn't really
respect the ball as well as we could have, and
we found ourselves not been able to get through the
(01:31):
defensive line because our carry height was far too high,
especially in the first half. So it was probably a
little bit of mix of everything, and you're just a
little bit messy all around, really, But I guess the
positives are.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
We found a way and we still won.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
But it gives us a little bit of stuff to
think about over summer.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
But we'll worry about that then.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
It doesn't become or does it become a rock under
the beach towel for you?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Oh no, not at all.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
No, I think we you know, we can be pretty
satisfied of I think the performances that we've together for
this whole test calendar as a whole. We can be
pretty satisfied that we've introduced probably more new all blacks
to the test arena than normal. But yeah, we've definitely
got some completion stuff that we will need to work on.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Heading into next year.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
But you know, the boys can be so pretty proud
that we found a way like, let's stated nothing out
of Italy like they were immense and they you know,
it was a big test for them at home.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
They had a lot of hurt from probably the World Cup.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Game, and it was our prep as genuine as it
could have been.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
I think it definitely could have been a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
In what way.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
I'm not just getting up for probably the mental challenge.
You know, we've come off three huge test matches and
the likes of you know, when you when you go England, Ireland,
France and then the Italy Test might have.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Been just a a bit of an.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Awakening for some of the guys that are getting used
to that test arena and how consistent you have to
be in your preparation every week.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
How happy were you with set Piece in particular the
scrum dominance that you had.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Yeah, it was all good.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
I think that we you know, we probably got ourselves
out of what could have been a real hole if
it wasn't for some of our scrum penalties that we won.
Line out was a little bit messy again for both
teams because it's just so wet. The you know, the
hookers were struggling to get that ball dry in time
for both sides, you know, I think it was I
don't know what the stats were for both sides of
(03:41):
the ball with the ball in the air, but the
catch was you know, it was going through hands or
it was a late late, little tip off and it
just wasn't as clean as it could have been. But
again due to the condition conditions. I don't know what
it looked like on the telly, but the ground.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Was just so wet.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Ye, No, that wasn't obvious from watching on TV. So
that's that's interesting to hear a couple of yellow cards, Jay,
do you think either of them were a bit soft?
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Yeah, I think the yeah far out. The crock roll
one from Scooter I thought was interesting. You know, like
we were told that if you if you, if you crockroll.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
And land on lower limbs and.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
It's clear and obvious, that's that's, you know, dangerous play,
which I'm not sure that was, but I understand that
they want to remove the crock rolls out of the game.
But that was more of a twist of the upper body.
So and Anton's one was yeah, probably little bit messy
as well, Probably don't need to stay in there as well.
So we'll look at that. But again, like you know,
(04:45):
if we're going to be honest about that and some
of our accuracy and cards and that sort of thing,
it just hasn't been as good as it could be.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
But we'll learn from it.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
I've got no doubt the boy's got a lot of
care and they want to want to do well.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
So in a wide of sense, Jace, you've used six
props and three hookers across the fourteen test matches this year,
how do you assess the All Blacks front row strength
at the moment.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I think it's right where it needs to be.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I think it's actually an Honestly, I think it's a
bit of a point of difference for us.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I think we've got some good depth there.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
You know, Simmosony is not here as well, so I
think that's going to add some good competition next year.
You know, Cody Taylor's had an our standing year and
Suffo has really come on to the Test arena which
has been awesome. And you know, a Tyre Lomax right
up there. You know, he's best tidy in the world
in my eyes, and I think we can be pretty
impressed with how to Mighty's come on as well. So
(05:38):
I think I think the competition overall is healthy and
we're probably seeing the awards with that with with our scrum.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
To be fair, how.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Have you assessed Wallace to Titi's growth in the All
Blacks Jersey?
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Ah?
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Yeah, in all honestly, I don't think there's been a player,
particularly a loose Ford, arrive on the world stage.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
I like it for some time. He is an immense
young man, so young, he's had a big season.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
We'll have to look after him and make sure that
he has a good plan around resetting himself. Got a
lot of leadership qualities in his own way. He's he's
a rugby player. He's instinctive and he's clear on what
he wants to do and it's a real credit to him.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
He's he's been amazing. You feel we would be surprised
if he doesn't.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
Win that will Breakthrough Player of a Year like he's
obviously been nominated for that tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
So yeah, pretty special mate.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Yeah, it feels it feels like he should win that one. Okay,
I was going to say, your fair well, your fair world.
Sam Kaine and t J Pitt Andada tonight both have
been All Blacks for over a decade. Can you give
us Jason insight into their influence on this team?
Speaker 4 (06:48):
Yeah, been really good on the experienced side of it,
both of them. I guess it's probably a little bit
easier for me to comment on Sam Kine because I
have more to do with him as a forwards.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
But look, I think he's been an amazing All Black.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
A lot of a lot of criticism probably through his
career in different stages, which is just you know, from
people that have probably got no lack of knowledge of
what it really requires to be in All Black seven
and they consistent All Black seven in such a physical
and demanding position. You know, he's obviously broke his neck
(07:25):
many years ago, He's had a little bit of back issues.
He's been resilient, he's been tough. But the leadership that
he shows in this team on and off the field
has been amazing. And you know, he'll go down in
my eyes and a lot of people's, I'm sure as.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
A great All Black. You know, to play one hundred.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
Plus tests, kept in the All Blacks in World Cup,
and you know he's given back, you know, everything that
were needed for him to do on this tour and
you know, we had a few injuries where he just
kept playing and being on the side, you know, But
you know he's been immense, as he keeps saying, really
proud of Seemi and pretty emotional in the shed seeing
(08:03):
him take the jersey off for the last time.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
But he's left his mark, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Is that number seven jersey one of your big live
selection conversations for next year.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
I think it'll be healthy, won't it.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, it will be, It will be.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Yeah, I think a wall I think when you look
at you know, obviously adults who're not can't forget about dots.
He's never got his hemi right and to come back
and was not going to make it over for this
tour and his plans and good foot he probably started
not quite out of the blocks as he would have
liked to in the Test arena, which he knows, but
you know, he's you know, he'll be he'll be targeting
at and I know that. You know, we've obviously played
(08:40):
Artie there as well, and Wallace is an eight and
and so Ddie can play there too. But Peter Laker
is going to be pretty good as well. He's pretty
dynamic for a young man. So I think it's exciting
to be fair.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yep, they can all wait. So have you warmed up yet?
It looked bloody cold mate?
Speaker 3 (08:58):
It was yeah, yeah, no it was.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
She was cold yet She's good. I'm looking forward to
keewy summer. It's for sure.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Good on you, Jason.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Thanks thanks for joining us.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Safe travels.

with a particular responsibility for the forwards, of course, with
some interesting
