Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from newstalk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
The are a number of New Zealand Golf Open Ambassadors
playing in the pro am. We've heard from Ricky Ponting.
Let's bring in another one double World Cup winning All
Blacks captain Richie mccare, who is a New Zealand Golf
Open Ambassador this time around. Good to chet here, Richie.
How are you enjoying your time at the New Zealand Open?
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Loving being here?
Speaker 4 (00:32):
My golf is yeah, certainly nothing to wright hang about,
but yeah it's a pretty cool event and yeah, very
very privileged to be evolved.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Is golf something that you have played a lot of, Richie?
Did you play much golf during your your rugby playing days?
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I did a little bit early on.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
I had a crew and the Crusaders used to get
out on the had occasion, but I was never very good,
so I didn't really get enthusiastic. But a bunch of
mates these days, I absolutely love the golf every weekend away.
Once a year I've turned up the too the worst golfer,
so I've tried to get a little bit to get
a couple of lessons those sort of things.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
But yeah, it's very.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Hit and mess, so I can can be on fire
for a couple of holes and then yeah, get to
bits pretty quickly.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
So but yeah, I do enjoy it.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
And it's one of those things that you know you're
gonna put a bit of time and differ better.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
You've just described every single goal for listening to the
show Richie. You know, on fire for a couple of
holes and then it all turns to Castard. You must, though,
enjoy being in one of the most beautiful parts of
New Zealand. How is it just sort of walking around
the course there down at Millbrook, I.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Was playing with the guys, just playing with see him
forgot his last name, but the pro from Aussie, he's
just every time a company.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I just can't believe this spectacular.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
Setting in view to play golf, and and I think
it's key with you preps take for granted, but it's
an amazing setting and immculate course and you know, you know,
having standing there beside these pros haven't hit your ball,
it feels it's very cool.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Yeah, And I I spoke to Ricky Ponting earlier and
asked him this question. He's been involved, obviously in massive
cricket matches. You've been involved in the biggest rugby matches
New Zealand's ever played, World Cup finals and such like.
I'm not sure if you've got nervous or not before those,
But do you get nervous on the first tea at
events like this?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah? Like people ask me that and yeah, I get nervous.
I got nervous for four games of rugby.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
But you kind of bet yourself you had some knowledge
and some skill to be able to handle it. When
you get those sort of feelings and you're actually not
sure what to do with a golf stick, the would
every thing goes tense.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
And today I'm the first tea.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
At least I made contact, but it wasn't the best shot.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
But Jesus, when it ever goes.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Quiet and standing over it, some funny thoughts.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Go through you.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Here to tell you, I bet and you're one of
a number of New Zealand Golf Open ambassadors down there.
I mentioned Ricky Ponting, Tom eber Crombie, Hayden padd and
Grant Elliott. Jeff Wilson. Is he dad who no doubt
has a bit to say? One of your former teammates.
Are you enjoying the friendly competition among the other ambassadors.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah, a great fun. And I got to play with
Ricky Ponting yesterday, who's you know, obviously a classic cricket
but a classic golfer as well, like he's on a
scratch handicap pretty much. And yeah, that was that was
very cool. And I give as he did Clina Stick.
He likes to back himself, but he's still He's told
(03:32):
me the day I beat him playing golf today gives up.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
So that's all we challenge for me to keep working in.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
That's great motivation to make Israel dare give up golf
on the on the course. In terms of the professionals, Richie,
obviously we've we've waited a while for a New Zealand winner,
the last one back in twenty seventeen. How good would
it be to see a New Zealand winner win the
New Zealand Open sometime tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
It would be awesome. It would be awesome.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
And you know, I don't follow golf enough to know
all the pedigree of all the guys, but if everyone
say is a pretty strong field, and you know, I
know John Hatton Organ eyss making sure they make it
now and they love to see a keep winning it again,
so yeah, it's I guess we'll wait and see. But yeah,
they're not going to be able to blame the course
(04:18):
or the brackets because it's absolutely perfect.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
And this must be wandering around a course like like
you are down at Millbrook, it must be slightly more
relaxing than doing the coast to coast as you did
in a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Well in a way, I kind of, as I say,
when you know what you're doing, you're sort of relax
a bit. So we're I'm on the bike. I sort
of don't mind. But this is quite stressful really when
you walk up. But yeah, a different sort of stress,
but it is.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
It is. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Now I've really really enjoyed it so far and you'll
just record the next couple of days.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Good on your Richie, Hey, well thanks for joining us.
Great that you're having a good time down there as
one of the New Zealand Golf Open Ambassadors. I appreciate
you taking the time for a quick chat to us
this afternoon.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Appreciation, No problem, thanks mate.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
That's Richie mccaugh of course, and it's a golfer, a
greaterst All Black, and enjoying himself as a New Zealand
Golf Opener ambassador by the Sounds of Things.
