Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from Newstalk SEDB with.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
A little bit of Super rugby because the Blues are
on the board. In Super Rugby twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Taken on the ground ten meter Mark bear it up
from fullback. Here comes a j lamb giving away to
Mark Teleia. The alarm bells are rigging for the canes
in and out Mark Tahlia.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Oh, here he goes. The alarm bells are rigging.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Mark Tahlia. Are sensational. Dry that gone from seventy meters downfield.
Barrett started it. They came across the field, the White
Master Tahlia. He set up and he went in out
around the parachute dive in the corner. Fantastic dry from
the all Black winger. They've gotten themselves back in front
the Blues League. The referee said we've had enough. The

(00:53):
Blues will take the points here. They have beaten the
home side by thirty three points to twenty nine.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Terrifix stuf from Ross Bond and the commentary box last night. Yes,
the Blues on the board in twenty twenty five after
two losses to open their season. They have come from
twenty nine to twenty one down in the second half
to beat the Hurricanes thirty three twenty nine at Sky
Stadium in Wellington. Were joined by Blues assistant coach Paul

(01:19):
Tetor Paul, thanks for taking our call. How important was
it for you to get on the board last night
with a win after going zero to two to start
the season.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah, big result that we needed that as a group.
You know, we've been struggling along and not hitting our straps,
not that we hit our strips fully less down on Wellington,
but that's definitely a big improvement. And when they will
look to bull from the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Which areas in particular, did you think you weren't quite
hitting the straps of early on and maybe even still
as you say, have some work to do.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
On Yeah, I just it's a clision based game, may
and we've you know, we've got a lot of guys
coming back and I shall be a little bit undercooked
to be fair, but you know we looked like at
times last night, you know, we looked like the Blues
of old where we were nice and physical and getting

(02:15):
up working hard for each other. So you know, he's
got to keep improving in those a couple of key
areas and and get back to work on Monday.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah. Vern kind of spoke after the game last night
about doing some of the things better that you've been
working a really hard in training. What other things do
you think you had better last night, Paul, You talked
about the collision areas with out other things that that
you Vern and the others were particularly happy with.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah, I thought the scrum was really good last night,
know of the challenge laid down to the group around that,
so it was good to see that operating well. You know,
still a line out to bit shaky from me for
my liking. We need to be better in that space. So,
you know, just a couple of areas that we need
to iron out. So we're so we're heading in the

(03:00):
right direction.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Late in the game, you're four points ahead, you're down
to fourteen men, you've got a second five on the
side of the scrum boat and Barrett's feeding the ball
and any nervous moments really late on last night.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
It's not the best spot to be, to be fair
in the coach's box that Yeah, Hey, you know, it's
just one of those things. Sam went off and you know,
I mean like he's got a pretty swallen eye, and
you know, like he's he's said a good knock and
they aren't all able to go hi A. So yeah,

(03:36):
that'll come out in the wash, I'm sure, but you
know it is what it is, and you've got adapt
and you know we managed to hang on and enjoy
the win.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Can you just unpack that a little bit for us,
because so Sam not got to got a whack to
the head. As you say, he's got a swollen eye.
So under HIA rules he can be replaced, and I
so often let Christy go on as an intended replacement
for him. But then what the independent doctor then said
that that's not an hi A? Is that how a
play out?

Speaker 4 (04:08):
That's what it looked like to me, you know, that's
all the kuffle was on the sideline around. Is it
an h i A or are we playing silly buggers
to get him back on? You know I can and
at the end of the day, the Mashday doctor made
the call and we couldn't replace us. We couldn't put

(04:30):
sim back on for Sam because he thought it was
an injury.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
So you weren't playing sy You went playing silly Buggers, No,
Mark Tala that.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Mark clear what a tray?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, I was gonna ask you, I mean, do you
do you even get surprised anymore when you see him
do things like that?

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (04:49):
That was that was right up there. I reckon great
to see him back and square of finishing off those opportunities.
It was a great you know, we caught that ball
in the twenty two Brady brought her back and got
the ball white Caleb and a couple of nice phases
and nice couple of touch just from a couple of
young guys, and you know, the world class finish of

(05:10):
that Markers. We've all seen it before and it was
a beautiful thing.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Boden Barrett has moved into into first five in the
second half scene crucial. Do you think we'll see him
start at first five at some stage soon?

Speaker 4 (05:27):
And we've got some quality tens stevieps not far away.
You know, they will get the opportunity, Harry and Stevie
and Body, they will get opportunity at ten. You know,
I just worry about the small numbers and make sure
that we're making sure that we're doing things better each
week so we can grow this team and be a
force to be written with in the next few weeks. Well.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
The biggest of the small numbers Hoskins STUTU late yellow card,
which was upgraded on field to a red. I've had
a couple of red cards and Super Rugby so far
this season. They've both ended up with three game bands.
Do you expect to lose Hoskins for that length of time?

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah, it looks that's the pretty standard procedure they're going with.
It looks like it. Yeah. I mean I haven't had
a real good look at it, but it didn't you know.
I mean they're looking pretty similar, aren't they. So he
might have a couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Does the game seem a lot faster to you this year?

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Yeah, I think the rest are doing a good job
in that space. I think it's just they're not allowing
the injured guy to be seen. You know, they're playing
on and it's created a lot of fatigue. I know
the boys that we're having to work hard and these
opportunity laden games, I reckon there's a lot of points
are being scored laden games due to this.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
You've had a really tough start to the season, Paul.
With the Blues. In fact, you're the only New Zealand
team who's had three New Zealand Derbies to start and
you've got a short turnaround now before you face the
Brumbies on Friday night back at Eden Park. How much
of a physical toll does three straight New zeal On
Derby's take on on, particularly the Blakes. You look after
the forwards, may.

Speaker 4 (07:14):
We don't make excuses where where the competition is the
competition that draws the drawer and that's all. That's the
cards that we're dealt. So at hand, we've got to
make sure that we recover well. We're smart at training,
We're doing enough at training, but you know, we're making
sure that the boys are fresh going into Friday night

(07:36):
and really motivated to represent the Blues and making sure
that we're performing on on the weekends.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Are they physically tougher games though? The Derbies?

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Oh? The Derbies crazy? You know you look last night
these I mean these injury wards everywhere from from us
to the Hurricane's got a massive injury told at the moment,
and it's just the next guy has got to be
ready because it's physical and it's demanding, and it's it's
tough work.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
And I know you've been gone for a while now
that you represented the Hurricanes with great pride for you know,
for close to a decade, started the two thousands. Do
you still like going back there?

Speaker 4 (08:19):
Yeah, I do. You know, I've coached a lot of
those guys with the Lions when I was down there,
so you know, there's a mess of respect from from
both teams, and hey, we're under the illusion that that
game could have gone either way last night, so there's
there's a lot of respect there and but definitely loved
getting down there and and taking home the points.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Better nights sleep last night than the previous two games.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Nice to wake up with a win. She's been a
tough couple of weeks, but it's footy.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Sometimes, Paul, thanks for chatting to us, mate. You're probably
gonna go watch the Warriors, so thanks for thanks for
taking the time for a chat. You too, Paul, Thank
you mate. Cheers Paul Title. They're Blues assistant coach in
charge of the forwards.
