Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from Newstalks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
So the Warrior is up to third on the NRL Ladder,
stunning the Brisbane Broncos twenty to eighteen and Golden Point
at Mount Smart last night.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Passing the bulldos te ten saloga looked clunky here and it's.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Kicked up here. Pik Curt take for Nick Cat take all.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I didn't know that Kurt Capewell could run that fast.
He tested out Luke Metcalf's hammies as he threw it
back inside, Metcalf grabbed it, went over for the try
and then of course Luke Metcalf was the main man
late on in the peace, nailing a fifty meter penalty
after they went to Golden point extra time and Broncos
fullback former Warrior Rhys Walsh somehow sent the Golden point
(01:02):
kickoff dead. What that does is give you a penalty
on halfway. Luke Metcalf stood up and said I'll take that,
and even though it had a rather unhappy night off
the kicking tea, he nailed it twenty points to eighteen
and the Warriors for the meantime anyway up to third
on the nrl ldder Let's bring it form a Warrior
and Kiwi's utility Motu Tony who joins us now he
(01:24):
watched the game close up at go Media last night, Martu.
Thanks for your time on Easter Sunday. First of all,
how important to win was this after the heavy loss
to the Storm last time out?
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Really important? But also it was just, you know, a
sign that now the Warriors had too much cleanly out
with Fisher, Harris Dylan was out, you know, Rogers out.
And yet you know, these these young boys really stepped
up and did a job in front of their home crowd,
in front of their families.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
How are you feeling when Luke Metcalf lined up that
shot at the end in Golden Point? Were you confident?
Speaker 1 (01:58):
I was?
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Actually I was confident because I could see where I
was sitting, you know, straight away I could see him
pointing to the post. I was thinking, you know, dis
pointing from the to the post, you know, so far out.
You know, I was thinking that he thought he could
you know, sort of back himself to get it. But
I always thought that the goalkick that you know, struck
the post. I was like, oh, that could come back
to haunt us, so luckily you didn't. In the end, it.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Says a lot about Luke Metcalf, doesn't it? That he
hadn't had a happy night off for kicking tea. He'd
had the chance to win it with that dropping near
the end of regulation time, but he was still very,
very keen to step up and embrace that moment. It
says quite a bit about him, doesn't it.
Speaker 4 (02:35):
It does, And it also just sends a really good message,
you know, to the club, and you know to the
coaches that they've got a half there who's you know,
he's got a bad memory, and when I have bad
memory too, this is an athlete. You've got to be
able to put some of the bad things behind you
that you know hasn't gone your way during the game
and step up when it matters. And that's what you
know Luke Metcalff done last night.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
He's obviously been given given the number seven jersey worn
by a number of illustrious predecessors. Have you evaluated his
first six games of the season in general terms?
Speaker 4 (03:06):
Luke, Luke's been building really nicely. And I think you
know the other part to Luke's game that's really helped
him as the form of she now has Tavida. I
thought he was outstanding again, just the way he's able to,
you know, take pressure of Luke but also step up
at the right times and come up with some some
players that you know, people don't recognize but the teammate
certainly does. And that's you know, Chanelle's you know season.
(03:29):
Today he's really stepped up and another fine effort from
him as well as you know, Eric Aeron Clark I
thought was massive again last night too, So you know,
all pointing well for the for the club with some
of these you know, younger players stepping up. Also, what about.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
This, what about like a hell of saver? The guy's
just a freak, isn't he in nineteen.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, Lequer's a freak, like you say, and that's why
he scored. It was just out of nothing. You know,
he got the ball and he had Jordan Jordan Ricky
in front of him, so you know, that's that's what
this kid can do. But you know, I was really
pleased on the defensive side, where you had Lecqua, you
had the metric my Mooma, you even had Jacob Leaven
when he came on. They were really getting stuck into
some of these bigger name forwards from the front goes,
you know, being harsh and carrigan. These young boys were
(04:09):
actually going after them. So it's a great sign for
the club going forward.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
We look at the way the game played out, how
to support it? Do you think they'll be in hindsight?
I know they won the game, but how disappointed will
the Warriors be letting the Broncos back what they were
eighteen six ahead? Back to eighteen or to force it
into Golden Point?
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Yeah? I think you know that's something that the coaches
wouldn't mind. Actually, you know, the coaches always need something
up their sleeve just to keep you know, they're squad
hungry and you know, not allow complacency to creep in.
But you know what, the Broncos, they've got too much talent,
you know, not to you know, feel comfortable. So even
though the Warriors got up by a couple of tries,
you know, there's always one player away because the Broncers
(04:46):
have just got too much talent across the path. But
in saying that, my old Keywis coach and Mike McGuire,
you know he would be feeling quite filthy. This morning
that you know his team weren't able to get.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
A result, all right, And just to finish more to
how should Warriors fans be feeling? Obviously, you're happy after
a win. Obviously you look at the table and you
see the Warriors tucked into third place. I know it's
early on, but how optimistic should Warriors fans be about
twenty twenty five here?
Speaker 4 (05:14):
I think there's a lot of reason to be optimistic.
You know, the way the Warriors played last night, that's
what they're trying to do. You know, every game, you know,
regardless of Fisher Horris is not there or Roger's not
there or Dull and you know that is the way
the Warriors are going to play all year. And you
know they've showed that when they do that, they can
win games against you know, quality side. So there's a
lot of optimism, but also the players that just need
(05:34):
to keep turning up with their same amount of intensity
and honesty when they take the field.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Fantastic great to get your thoughts. Thanks for taking time
on east to Sunday. Motu enjoyed the rest of your weekend.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Thanks Swane, you too, mate.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Thanks mad That is Mattu Tony with some thoughts on
the Warriors.
