Speaker 2 (00:13):
After the hooter to stun the Chiefs twenty nineteen and
they must win Super Rugby playoff match in Hamilton last night.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
The Blues porn's advantage against the Chiefs, killing the pill.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
They have another go, they get closes, will.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
A try, Bear's gonna try, just beerscort it. The big
Luck reaches out and dumps it down. It's nineteen eighteen
with the kick to come all the victory and it's
all over.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
And the Blues of one. They have one indeed minte.
The Chiefs lead for much of the game. They were
ahead by thirteen at the hour mark before the Blues
stormed back with two converted tries. The winner, as you
heard there coming three minutes after the final hooter, courtesy
of reserve locke Josh Berry. The Blues so now though,
(01:03):
we'll head to christ Yitch. They'll face the Crusaders on
Friday night. The Chiefs stay alive. They'll host the Brumbies
and Hamilton on Saturday night in the second semi final.
Blues assistant coach Greg Feek is with us on weekend Sport.
Thanks for your time, Greg. How was the drive back
up the motorway to Auckland last night?
Speaker 4 (01:20):
Oh yeah, it.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
Was a lot of smiles and excitement about the week.
Speaker 4 (01:27):
The boys are pretty chilled at the back by the
end of it and just couldn't wait to get into
their recovery and prep.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
So yeah, it's funny how things work out, and we
knew we just needed to get into these finals and.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
We were starting to build.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
It was the start of the season was an ideal,
but that's all in the past now, so we're excited.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Talk us through the final few minutes. From your view,
you're nineteen thirteen down attacking their line, the hood goes,
can you pick it up from there?
Speaker 5 (01:58):
Yeah, we looked we looked patient with a conference, we
looked physicol so we had the makings of of snatching that,
you know, and and we've lost a few games this
year around it, you know, like the same way, so
it was great to be able to get that back.
But you know, we just felt that, we felt the vibe,
could see it, and we were just wait until the
(02:19):
unfold and then there was penalty advantages going on, so
we had free we had free free cracks of the
line when that happens too. So I've talked about it
all year, but when we've got there, we don't need
to panic.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:32):
It's about being physical, but being controlled. So it was
great to see that come through and get us to win.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, that was so obvious from watching how how much
composure there was out there, how calm, you know, everybody
seemed to be in a pretty chaotic part of the game.
How crucial are the voices of your on field leaders
in moments like that.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
Yeah, I think the voices are crucial, but I think
it's backing ourselves, and earlier in there we're guilty of
probably a bit toy frantic and thrown passes that weren't needed.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
But when we when were like that, we've got a
game now to play it.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
We've been we've done this before, and it just seemed
to at that point everything to slow them. We're in
a we're in a real flow state, you know, and
in finals, that's what you need. You need to take
out the mental side of the game and just be
really clear and focused so that you can be composed
so that that's gonna you know, it would be awesome
(03:27):
for our confidence going down to which will be a
tough match against Crusaders.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Ye want to pick up on that in a moment
at nineteen six down with fifteen minutes to go, did
you did you have faith still that you could get
the job done?
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Oh? It was concerned, you know, it was.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Like fair enough.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
Yeah, yeah, yeah there all you know, to be honest,
and as a coach, you're thinking, but we didn't get that.
We didn't really get to far a shot, you know
in that first half. You know, you would have seen
the stats, territory position, we hadn't had any didn't get
into their twenty two.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
It also it was sort of like is this how
it's going to end?
Speaker 5 (04:03):
You know, we didn't really get to have a crack
at them, and then there's a couple of opportunities that
we missed, and then once we started going, it's like,
well five minutes is a long time. Ten minutes a
long time.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
You know. When when Damiens.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
Missed that cack, I was like, okay, well here we
go and the boys pounced on it and we're hungry,
so yeah, I mean, that's that's the beauty of the game.
And it was a I mean, as a spectator, I
suppose it was a great game to watch.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
It was. It was here for those of us with
no skin in the game. You're right, it's compelling. I'm
up off the couch watching that game as if I've
got some sort of investment in it, which i haven't.
Just on Damien McKenzie's miss penalty. You know, he kicked
well all night, but that would have taken them out
to watch twenty two thirteen? Were you kind of willing
that one white as he has he kicked it.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
I didn't even watch it, to be honest, love love, Yeah, yeah,
I'm not going to. I'm not going to, you know, paint.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
These beautiful pictures of all the things you want to hear, mate,
But I just didn't watch it. I was like, oh,
you know, and we've been there, We've seen that those
cats go out.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
We've missed some.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
But you know, and again, like I said, you know,
the game is when the whistle blows, when it's over.
And I just love the fact that the boys just
kept going, keep going. Hoskins got done for crawling, you know,
and it's like, who cares, let's go again. The boys
are out there. Apparently the chat was really good, Like
you say, the leaders store part stood up with body
and Rique Warson, Dalton Hoskins. You know they live well
(05:33):
and our bench was was energetic, you know, so what
more can the house for?
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, and provided the two tries, you'll be no doubt
reveling in the fact that too tight forwards scored your tries.
Have you been making that point today?
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Well, it was all backed last week. That's about. You know,
you can't have them score on them all the time.
That's good. That was good.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Cudy Cutie was he dived in at ankle height and
got his and then Josh was outstanding and just kept
his body hide and he's a big man, he's powerful.
And Georgie lay one of assist them to get out
of the line, and and those sorts of things are
you know, the boys will cherish and will.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
Definitely celebrate that maybe.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
Tomorrow when boys come in with a with a six
day turn around.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Now you mentioned the Crusaders. I'm sure you've heard the stats.
They've won thirty straight finals matches in christ Church, and
I'm equally sure you'll be undaunted heading down there, won't you.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
You You hear this stats, a lot of stats mentioned.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
You hear about you know that.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
I mean, that's a good one, but in the end
of the day, that's probably not going to be the
main motivator for us.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
You know.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
That's that's great, it's it's a for the Crusaders, that's great,
And for us, it's like, oh yeah, but there's more
at stake here than just breaking a breaking a record,
you know. So we've have a game to play, and
I think for us, it's about planning our game, having
a performance that that can win us the game, and
and there's still a few things that we can get right.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
You know, wasn't the perfect performance, So that's that's our
focused But yes, the hell of ste I.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Know it doesn't matter anymore, Greg because you're in finals
games now. But why do you think consistency was so
hard to come by for the Blues in the regular season.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
I think I think there's a number of there's a
few factors.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
I think.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
You know, we had a New Zealand a team and
an all black team that were away to feel our boys.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Isn't it.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
They came back and and didn't really get the probably
the preseason that I would have liked of them got,
if you know what I mean. Like, so there was
a little bit of a stagnated start there, and then
we lost a few games in the last minute, and
I think then we just like I said earlier, we
probably just played a little bit frantic at times and
tried a little bit too hard and.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
You can't it's.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
Hard to sort of like, I don't know, it just
depened the boys on trying too hard. It's just pulling
it back and and just going back to what works
well for us and keep getting better. And I think
no one's during the year has actually gone you know,
I lost confidence in what we're doing, and I think
VC has done a good job and resetting us and
coming back to what we're what we're good at, but
(08:15):
also growing our game at the same time. So yeah,
there's a few factors there. And we obviously lost a
couple of guys with Offer and Sam early on, but
Josh has stepped up, Laggy Louglan McConnell last.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
He stepped up, Josh Berry stepped up.
Speaker 5 (08:32):
And yeah, and I think also our health is pretty
good too now, so you know, to win games, you
need players available, and so that's that's all part of it.
So there's a few factors. There's not always just one
or two things, you know.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, And can I tell you about Josh Flusher Tour.
He's played all fifteen games this year, started the last ten.
You reckon he might be all black this year.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Oh look, I'm reluctant to talk about that stuff because
it's so you know, it's out of our hands, out
of my hands, and it's in his a little bit
more than mine, you know what I mean. So, and
I don't want to put any more pressure on the guy.
There are some good players knocking on that door. And
you know he's done enough this year to show what
(09:17):
he can do, show is shan massive potential? Well, his
potential is still there's no ceiling. I don't think, you know,
he can still get better. So I'm excited for his future,
you know what I mean, And for us to start with,
I'm excited for that any His professionalism has just accelerated
so much around his game off field, and yes, so
(09:43):
whatever happens happens for him. But he's had a great season.
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Well, you've all earned another Monday. I hope it's a
great week. Greg, all the best. On Friday night down
in christ Churches, you look to break that thirty match
Treek for the Crusaders. Thanks for the chat this afternoon, mate,
No pleasure, cheers, no thank you, Greg. Greg Seak there
scrum coach, assistant coach of the Blues. So they earn
another week they will face the Crusaders and.
