The All Blacks have reclaimed the Dave Gallaher Trophy with a dominant 43–17 win over France in Wellington. They bounced back from their scratchy first up performance in Dunedin crossing over for 6 tries in a far more clinical performance.
Assistant coach Tamati Ellison joined Piney to discuss where the All Blacks improved most from the first test.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks ed B.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Look to drive it away, I got down the left
hand light. What happened there, dem REI god sneaks away
from outside of twenty two and the All Black score
the first of the night. Yeah. The All Black stumping
France forty three seventeen and Wellington last night to reclaim
the Dave Gallaher Trophy for the first time since twenty eighteen.
Very comprehensive first half, A twenty nine to three lead

(00:35):
at the break that laid the platform for one of
the better wins of the Scott Robertson era. All Black's
assistant coach Tumoty Ellison is with us. Tumoty, thanks for
your time this afternoon. What were your first thoughts on
the game when you woke up this morning and had
given it the overnight test.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
I think we were probably started with better intent in
the collisions than we did last week. I think we
found some flow with our tech also similar to last week,
just probably completed more at first half.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
If we talk about the improvements that you were really
hoping for from the team and worked on during the week,
what were they and how happy were you with the
step up in those particular areas.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
I think on the defensive side of the ball again,
around our tent and our tackle height. You were seen
last week in Duned and we probably we wrote a
few too many tackles and against big sides, you know,
they can just eat the game lineup and continue to
play on top of you. So we were happy with
parts of that in the first half, which is then

(01:40):
a few more turnovers than that we could attack from
turnover ball.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Britan Evans has coming to the coaching group to work
on line out efficiency, and your first three tries came
from lineouts. He's earning his money already by the looks
of things.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yeah, it's got a good relationship with Healthie, with Jason Holland,
and it's great to see it to an area of
the game where from last year really have an emphasis
on our strike. So it's been nice for those men
to work together and give Jesse Ryan some time to
keep his eyes across other things.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
I think that cam royguard try the first one is
out of the Hurricanes playbook, so Brillivan's obviously going straight
from the Hurricanes into the All Blacks. And bringing the
same moves with the same same outcomes.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah, well they've got some hurricanes bones and that that
strike group with both Brendan and Alfie. Yeah, it was
a beauty.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Two paul vas try flowing move. How much of that
tumity has trained, you know, in terms of attack and
how much is that just the player's high level skill
sets in the heat of the moment.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
I think it's both. We have players that have high
level skill sets, some great footwork and ability to move
the ball, so that during the working week you have
to give them opportunity to continue to grow those skill
sets that they have. So yeah, it was nice to
see clear ear punching through and sighting the target and
the boys getting over there.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
How do you evaluate Billy Proctor's development in the number
thirteen Jersey?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah, I think it's new from some of the adjustments
and test footy.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
What sort of things in particular, I.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Think defensively just working at how much lines but he
needs to bring and how connect he needs to be
with his insights. You know, one of the best edge
defenders in super rugby without a doubt. So he'll continue
to grow and make some adjustments and as a player
who's hungry to get better, so it will become easier.

(03:40):
You're taking sight of the boys. He's great, nice offtset
a hand, So both those areas will continue to develop.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
A lot of kicking last night, as we knew there
was going to be, and it's always a bit tricky
and Wellington with the unique conditions inside sky Stadium. How
do you assess your kicking game in general terms?

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, I think Body mentioned that halftime. He just he
pushed a couple a week bit long, so they're able
to mark them a couple opportunities there to bring them
forward and then go into our tackle plans. But also
thought we kicked on top really well and Will Jordan
whiped a few back to back corners and we're able
to put them under and there's some pressure we put
the bouncing ball on a greasy, greezy night.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Do we need to get rid of this deliberate knockdown
yellow card rule?

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Oh yeah, I think you have to look at things
and work out how much time the player had to
make a decision and versus someone who's defensively in the
line coming forward. But I think I'm not sure that
the yellow card part. But I think you have to
read the situation, that's for sure, the context of when

(04:45):
it's happened.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Totally. Look, I totally get them. If he's knocked it down,
that's fine, but the yellow card part of it. Body
even said afterwards, Tommy, he might have hurt his comments.
You know, he doesn't have time to make that decision,
and if a player of his caliber doesn't then he can.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Yeah. Yeah, no, you're right.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, the chance to add another player to the All
Blacks family last night to Mathy Tava Tava, Nah, I
came on in the first half as a as a
at a replacement for Jordie and then had you know,
another fifteen twenty minutes in the second half. What did
you make of his test debut?

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Yeah, I thought he got on top. I thought he
was really keen, especially right at the end of the
game where I think he had multiple multiple touches and
carries on the same play. Today, he was hungry, and
I think the more opportunity's given them more he'll be
able to show what we're seeing jury super He's been great,
you know, he's really fit it into the group nicely,

(05:34):
and I think getting the first one under his belt
will really set him up.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
As a coaching group, ben as a playing group. I guess,
how do you best prepare a player during the week
leading into his test debut.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
I think the leaders do a really good job of
setting examples. Your field staff support the player and his
family and help them line things up, and you know,
so they can concentrate on what they're really good at.
And there's a lot more moving parts in a bigger
and a bigger machine, so we really want them to
to focus on what they're already good at and hopefully

(06:09):
that that comes easier to them. We've got great leaders.
That's a great example, so you know that's normally done,
and it must.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Be really cool to be able to celebrate that sort
of thing afterwards. I know, you know you've obviously much
better when you've had a good win, but it must
be really cool looking around at a shit afterwards and
seeing a new guy like him and welcoming him in
in that way.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
That's amazing. I think everyone remembers the first time and
the great job you know of field staff, and I
like to get families involved and make that moment really special.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
So we go to Hamilton now for the third test.
Does the victory last night Tamata and the series win
give you a bit more freedom when it comes to
team selection next week, given guys who haven't had a
game in this series yet the chance to have one.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
I'm not sure exactly. I think it gives us confidence.
It gives us some nice energy to go and build
a better week than we had this week. I think
that's important. We're really clear on where we can make
improvements in our structure. It's only week two, so I
think that's what it will give us more than anything.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
How much are you growing as a coach in the
All Black's environment.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
I'm not sure. You have to ask the players.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
How are you enjoying it? Then?

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Yeah, I really enjoy it. I enjoy the work. It's
not for everyone. You know, the late nights. We've had
Wayne Smith in this week and you know he said
to me last night about one in the morning the
back of the telly he never was comfortable as an
All Black coach. So it's one of those things if
you want to do it for a reasonable period and

(07:47):
be successful, it's every day it's turning up. And the
thing I really enjoy is is making others better and
you get up and get an opportunity to find something
in someone's game that you can help improve, and you
know that's really rewarding.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I guess we don't see any of that stuff, do we.
As you say the late nights, I'm sure you're on
your laptop a lot. You're probably you know, thinking about
rugby all the time. All we see is the eighty
minutes on a Saturday. It sounds like there's a heck
of a lot that goes into it during the week.
Letting into a test, yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
It can be, but but again it's it's what the
Jusey demands and we understand that commitment when when you
sign up.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
So yeah, good man, Tummody, congrats on the win last night.
All the best for the week. You hit as you
hit to Hamilton.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Thanks Poni, you appreciate the call.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
No, I appreciate you taking the call, Tummoty, Thanks indeed,
Tumoty Ellison assistant coach or one of the assistant coaches
and the All Black Setup.
