Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
So our men softball side still in contention to add
to their record seven world titles at Softball's World Cut,
the last of those they won in twenty seventeen. New
Zealand have a one win, one loss record in the
Top four Super Round that after pipping the United States
five to four yesterday thanks to Jerome Raimaky's walk off
(00:34):
home run in the very lasting.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Works swung God football.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
You should say, goodball, horborad Jerome robackie no one bigger
in the situation. He walks it off for New Zealand.
(01:07):
I said, how crazy. I do not believe it.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Incredible stuff from Jerome on Amaki.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
It means that New Zealand have to beat Japan this
afternoon to stay in contention for the.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Gold medal match.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
It'll also rely on the result in the other game
this afternoon between Venezuela and the United States of America.
Jerome and Aimaky is with us on weekends Port. Jerome
quite the finish to the game yesterday, bottom of the seventh,
one out your four to two down runners on first
and second. It is a massive at bat for you,
what's going through your head?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Is your step up?
Speaker 5 (01:44):
To be fair?
Speaker 6 (01:45):
I was just looking to pass the better non to
the next person, to be fair. But yeah, it was just, yeah,
really trying to get on base and just apply a
bit more pressure, but just managed to have a spot
where I was able to put a good swing on
a pitch and then the rest is history.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
How are the emotions as you see it sail over
the left field fence?
Speaker 6 (02:09):
To be fair, I didn't actually see it go to
the fence. I just kind of I kind of knew
there's a feeling, but I did have a little moment
between home plate and first base where I can't remember
too much.
Speaker 5 (02:22):
So it was.
Speaker 6 (02:24):
Just back to basics and make sure I touch all
the bases and do all the little things right.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
When you connect on a hit like that, you alluded
to it just now do you know? Do you know
that that's gone?
Speaker 5 (02:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (02:36):
There is a certain feeling and majority of the times
you can't feel anything, which is always a good sign
because if you can feel it in your hands, you're
either too far off the bed or too far down
the bed.
Speaker 5 (02:47):
So yeah, that one felt pretty good.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
And you're a left handed batter of course, so right
field feels more likely. Do you hit mainly to right
field or is left field somewhere you've had good success
as well.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
It's not well you try and hit the ball where
it's pitched, try and reverse it. So that's sort of
that's the way we're taught from a young ages to
hit the ball where it's pitched and don't try and
do too much with it. When it's coming out at
ay seven miles you don't really have to do too much.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
And you've been around the sport for a while, is
that among your best moments in the game.
Speaker 6 (03:25):
Yeah, there's definitely up there for sure, definitely the best
blacksocks moment, But I think the best ones yet to come.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
I agree with that because there is more to come.
So so far at the tournament, you've beaten Canada and Argentina,
lost of Venezuela, beat the US. As I say, how
do you evaluate the World Cup campaign and overall terms
up to this point.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
Yeah, it's hard to do it before it ends.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
But the way that we've been tracking currently is we're
on track for those little goals that we've put in
place throughout the pretty much since we started in Toronto
all the way till now. We've got a couple of
hurdles to get over, but it's pretty hard to put
a how did.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
I put it?
Speaker 6 (04:11):
Just to put a nail on how we're tracking at
the moment, because it's the final result.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
The sort of we always right off that.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
How did you feel coming in as a team? Did
you feel well prepped and ready for the for the
World Cup coming in?
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (04:26):
I think as a team it's always the hardest, especially
when a few of us were already over here in
the States and then a lot traveled from New Zealand,
so it's always sort of the first week in a
bit is just sort of jelling together. And I think
the first weekend we got together, we sort of hit
the ground running. So it's always the unknown, but the
(04:48):
preparation leaving from home there was a lot of hard
work put in. And they're showing at this letterage later
stage of this tournament.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
How formidable an opponent are Japan.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Oh, they're ranked in the top five in the world,
so they're always going to be difficult, very crafty, very fast. Yeah,
They've they've got all the tools there. But I think
the way that we're going that we're going to be
tough to stop as well.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Black Solks, of course have seven world titles, haven't meddled
in the last two, and you were at both of those.
How driven are you, not just personally but as a
team to have success here in Canada?
Speaker 6 (05:30):
Yeah, there's there's definitely a few from those last couple
of campaigns that have been sleeping with a rock under
the under the pillow for farewell.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
So yeah, it's not just us.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
The guys that maybe on their first one are also
pretty driven in that as well. So I mean it
starts at the top, through the coaching stuff and just
filters through to us as players.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
All right, well, look, we wish you all the best
against Japan. Can't wait to see how it plays yet,
just back to your head. I know you don't sound
too keen on talking about yourself, but did your phone
blow up afterwards?
Speaker 3 (06:00):
It's all over social over here.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
Yeah it did a little bit. I haven't. I've had
to put it down for a little bit last moment.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
So that was wonderful stuff. Made a great moment for
you and for the team. I hope it continues. Thanks
for taking the time for a chat this afternoon.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
Awesome thanks for having me, No.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Thanks for joining US, Jerome, Jerome Oramaki.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
There a walk off home run over the left field
fence to give New Zealand victory over the United States.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
So they played Japan.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
That game is underway very shortly actually, and a winner
is necessary for New Zealand to make it to the
gold medal match. It will also depend on the other game,
which is in the top of the seventh at the moment,
So getting towards the end, Venezuela lead the United States six'.
Four New zealand would be favored by The United states
winning that. Match they're going to have to get a
(06:48):
move on, though because they're two down in the top
of the seventh and trailing six to. Four so what
that means effectively is if they can't at least tie
the game with the one remaining out they have in that,
inning that's over And venezuela will win the. Game New
zealand can't do much about. That all they can do
is Beat japan and then see how the points differential
(07:08):
shakes down to find out whether they'll be playing four
gold or contesting the third and fourth place.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
