Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from Newstalks EDB in.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
The Wimbledon women's tennis final, that's up a way to
end it.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Higos Fiatek, a dominant display, is now a Grand Slam
champion for all surfaces, elation and also consolation for an
opponent who The datemare are out here.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
But this is Siatzback's moment.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
She made out of imagine it, Chrissy, but she looks
like she expected it today.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Eighth seed Eagers fion Tech blitzing Amanda and a Samova
six love, six love in less than an hour to
claim her first eb A Wimbledon crown. It's Fiontech's sixth
Grand Slam title. She is unbeaten in major finals. Only
once in Wimbledon history has a women's final finished.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
With the double bagel. That's what they call it, six love,
six love. That was all the.

Speaker 4 (01:05):
Way back in nineteen eleven. Craig Gabriel watched on at Wimbledon. Craig,
You've watched a heck of a lot of tennis. Have
you ever seen a more one sided major tennis final?

Speaker 5 (01:18):
I have, Actually, I'll get onto that in I'll get
onto that in one second. But you had to see
the international media racing for the record books and the
compendium that Wimbledon produced, which is like a doorstop trying
to find this sort of information as to the last
time and the last time what it was Dorothy Lambert

(01:38):
Chambers in nineteen eleven over Dora Brooksby. I can't say
that I know Dora, that she must have been embarrassed.
And that match lasted twenty five minutes. It was a
little longer today fifty seven. But it's the shortest or
the quickest final that has happened at Wimbledon on the

(01:59):
women's side since I think in twenty nineteen, when Samona
Halla beats Serena Williams. But to your question, yes I have,
and it was the nineteen eighty eight French final with
Stephanie Graft defeating Na Tasha Zvereva six love, six love
in thirty two minutes.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Goodness may so, yeah, there you go.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
Why and where, apart from everywhere, was Siontek particularly dominant.

Speaker 5 (02:31):
She went out there playing fast tennis, aggressive tennis, and
she got on top from the very very start of
the match, and you could see there was some the
nerves aspect was coming into play with Amanda Anisimova. She
but what she said was, yeah, there were nerves, but
it wasn't dramatic. Well, I think as the match progressed

(02:53):
and things were just not happening for her. I mean
shots there would have been bread and butter, shots were
going out or into the net, and the frustration was developing,
and the crowd was trying to get her going and
lifting her, and I think that would have added to
the nerves situation. But and then on top of it,

(03:13):
to counteract somebody like srion Tech, conditions were helping her.
I mean it was hot and sunny and just think
things just fell into play sport for srian Tech. It
was such a solid performance, it really was. It was classy.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
She is unbeaten in major finals that six yeah, grand
same title.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
So she loves the big occasion. Craig by the Sonds
of it.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
Oh, there's no doubt about it. You know, with any
of the big tour players, you know, the first couple
of rounds might be a little bit of a drag.
We saw so many upsets at Wimbledon this year, but
when they get into a rhythm, it's so hard to
stop them, and srian Tek was just able to avoid
any potential upsets and the draw opened up for her.

(03:58):
And as is saying, these conditions for a lot of
the time here at Wimbledon, they've been hot and sunny.
When I walk down to the courts this morning from
Southfield's tube station, which is the most convenient tube station
for wimbled for the All England Club, it was seven
point thirty in the morning and it was twenty five degrees,

(04:18):
so it was a hot day.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
Let's go to the means final tonight, as it was
at the French Open Annick Center against Carlos el Karez.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
We had a five and a half hour match that time.
Elkarez wedning in five.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
Might we see a similar battle at Wimbledon and the
means final?

Speaker 5 (04:36):
Wouldn't it be incredible if we did? I mean, I
mean we'll be there through after dinner drinks. It'll go
that long because the final only starts at four o'clock
in the afternoon London time. But both of them are
expecting a tough, challenging match, and rightly so. They know
exactly what to expect. It's nothing different. They've been through

(04:59):
these matches time and again and they head to head
his eight to four in Carlitos's favor. You know, it
was suggest asked for Alcaraz, will you have the mental
edge considering what happened at the French Open, and he
said absolutely not, definitely not, and that is the truth
as he put it. A sorry sinner feels that Alcaraz

(05:23):
is the favorite, and he probably is is right in that,
considering that Alcaraz has won the last two Wimbledon's and
is quite comfortable playing on grass. So we'll see how
this pans out. But I think we are in for
another humdinger of a match. For me, nothing against Carlos.
I think the world of Carlos. By the way, he

(05:45):
doesn't like being called Carlos. It's either Charlie or Carlitos.
And but I would like to see Annik Winn and
you know, he's a he's a wonderful guy. Both of
them are the heartbreak of Paris. I think, you know,
it'll be wonderful to see him get through. And also
there's an Australian connection in that one of his two coaches,

(06:07):
Darren Cahill, is an Australian and has done wonders with him.
As has his Italian coach Simoni.

Speaker 4 (06:13):
He's never won Wimbledon though, here's he Craig. He's never
even made the final Yanick Center before this year. But
he's obviously fairly handy on grass, is he well, he's more.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
Comfortable on it now. I mean it's taken a little while.
He admitted that, you know, he was a bit touss
on the movement. What I think has helped change things around.
And Darren Cahle is revealing this. He Novak Djokovic beat
Yanick on two occasions at Wimbledon. The first time they played,
Yanick was up two sets to love and lost it.

(06:45):
The final three sets were pretty handy in Novak's favorite.
Darren had just started working with Yannick and he went
to Novak. He said, look, don't tell me what you
don't want want to say, but what do you think?
And Novak gave him a complete write up on what
is failing Yannick? And that's when things really started. And

(07:08):
now in the semi final, that was the fifth straight
time he'd beaten Novak. Thanks nice for you know, if
you're in friends like that, seriously, but it's you know,
it's great to see him develop the way he has
of the world number one, and he's one of I
think what five or eleven players to have reached all
four off the major finals in the open era. But

(07:31):
what he has also done is the sixth player or
six man to win to sorry, reached the finals of
four consecutive majors. Started at the US Open last.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Year, quite in cribble, just to finish quickly.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
Craig Novak Djokovic, have we seen his last major wins?

Speaker 5 (07:51):
He was sort of asked that in a roundabout way yesterday,
and he says he expects to be back at Wimbledon, maybe,
as he put it, for one last Wimbledon, So we'll see.
But he admitted that ages catching up and the injuries
are there. He's a bit more suspect susceptible to injuries

(08:12):
because of the age factor. But he said, I change
anybody to match me for the way I take care
of my body and the work that I do.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
All right, We'll waiting and to see you what lies
ahead for Novak not to be at Wimbledon twenty twenty five,
Janick Center against Carlos Alcarez for the men's singles final.
Acquarez can make it three in a row. Janix Cinner
can win his first Wimbledon title. Craig Gabriel and Wimbledon,
thank you for your time as always, Craig, appreciate you
updating us on what you see on the grass courts
at Wimbledon, what you see all around the tennis world.

(08:45):
Always good to get your insight and your Analyson.
