Up next: Adelaide United. Last time the teams faced in March of this year, it ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw following late goals from both sides.

Auckland FC Winger Lachie Brook joined Jason Pine to discuss his mindset as he heads in to the match against his former club.

'Like I said, I am a fan of the club - not that it's going to make me play any less hard.'

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Full time here at Joe Media Stadium. Auckland f C one,
Western Sydney Wanderer is nil. Let's bring an Auckland f
C attack of lockey Brook. Bit of a quirk of
the draw, locky in that in consecutive weeks you'll play
your two former A League sides, Western Sydney last weekend,
Adelaide United this afternoon. How much you're looking forward to
coming up against the team that your debuted for what
seven years ago?

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yeah, funny draw that obviously, when the draw came out,
I had a look at that, and yeah, I think
probably no better way to start off the season, obviously,
But yeah, and I'm excited. Obviously I know a few
of the boys as well, so you've always got that
added a bit of motivation to do them over.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
But yeah, no, overall I'm just excited.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
You davoote for them when you were sixteen in early
twenty eighteen. How really did you feel for a league
football at that age?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
To be honest, at the time, it was quite a
shock because the game I wasn't even meant to start
at all, and then someone got injured in the warm
up and I sort of got thrown in.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
But I think that sort of worked out all right.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
I think sometimes if I knew I was starting all week,
you can let the nerves get to you. But I
didn't really have any time to let the nerves kick in,
so I just obviously went out there and did my best.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
But yeah, that was an awesome experience.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Obviously, I'm an Adelaide boy and I've touched on being
an Adelaide fan before, so yeah, for me, it was massive.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
And how do you remember your time overall with the
read You were there for two or three years. I
think you had time in the UK during that time,
didn't you.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, yeah, no, I loved it. I loved it.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Even in the off season while I was in the MLS,
I trained with that. They helped me to stay fitting
sharp in the off season, So yeah, I've got a
really good relationship with the people at the club, and yeah, overall,
I just obviously like I said, I am a fan
of the club, not that it's going to make me
play any less hard, but yeah, now I'm obviously very

(02:24):
thankful for the club and you know how they kicked
off my career and stuff.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
So yeah, very good relationship.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
How easy an environment has Auckland FC been for you
to fit into?

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Yeah, honestly very easy.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Like I said this in an interview the other day
that you know, coming here and stuff, it doesn't feel
like it's not home. Obviously when you've been living away
and stuff. Anywhere close to this side of the world
does feel like home. And just with the boys in general,
we're a really good bunch as well, and I think
that goes a long way, you know, when you've got
that camaraderie and brotherhood within the team and even within

(02:59):
the staff as well. You know, we're all quite close
and stuff. And I think you know, in a season
long season that is it's so it goes a long way.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
It'd be interested because you come into a team that
you know that last year as we all know they were,
they were new, they all sort of went through the
same things together of being this you know, this very
successful first season franchise only to fall short at the end,
there aren't really many additions to the side yourself and
a couple of others. There was no there was no clunkiness.

(03:28):
When you first arrived, they kind of welcomed you in
as one of their one of their own.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah, they did. They did.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
No obviously that there is that year that they had
and I think a lot of history that they'll, you know,
they'll remember forever. But there's still the team still, you know,
very fresh, and there's still things that they didn't do
last year that you know that hopefully I can contribute
for them doing this year. So yeah, I think that
the mission hasn't changed, and I think the mission is
quite clear that we want to do one better than

(03:57):
last year, and hopefully I can I can help out
in doing So.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
What is the role that head coach Steve Coricker has
specifically asked you to play.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
I think it's yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
I mean, if you watch the games, it's I think
it's quite clear. I'll do a drift inside a lot
and maybe people think I'm getting lost, but that's that's
all part of it. Yeah, it's I wouldn't say it's
a free role, but he obviously does give me a
bit of freedom to to come inside and link up
play and you know, try get on the ball as
much as possible, but obviously, you know, try to stay

(04:29):
within the structures and off the ball. Yeah, that's that's
a job that we all have to do, is work
hard and you know, plenty of running and plenty of tackling.
So yeah, I'd say that's mostly my role that Steve's
given me.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
And how does it link with the likes of Sam Cosgrove,
who's very much your traditional number nine, gives you my
Mai who who kind of drops off the line, he's
more of a ten. I guess, how does your connection
with those two players specifically work.

Speaker 3 (04:57):
Yeah, I think obviously it was Jomo's first sort of
game back last week, and I've obviously played with him
a bit in the pre season, but even within training,
we do like to link up a lot, and I
think we have a lot of the same ideas and
read each other well, and that's coming out more and
more in training and you could sort of see it
towards the end of the.

Speaker 4 (05:17):
Game that we started to link up a lot more
as well.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
So I think, you know, in the deeper parts of
the pitch to progress us forward, that's going to be,
you know, really important and obviously a part of my
game that I like to do anyway. And then obviously
once we're in the final third, is just trying to
find the Eiffel Tower, which is Sam in the middle,
and hopefully, yeah, give him some assists because he's a
great finisher, and yeah when he gets those chances here,

(05:41):
you know, he's quite clinical. So obviously that's a big
part of the game, as well as trying to feed
him as much as possible.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
I guess you can probably relate to, you know, a
new attacker coming into a new team. Maybe not so
much you, but I got like Sam Cosgrove. You know,
a lot of people thought he's going to come in
and absolutely feast on set piece delivery and crosses from
wide areas. Hasn't got his goal yet. Do you think
it's weighing on his mind at all?

Speaker 3 (06:02):
I don't think so. I think it's been two games
in pre season. He was scoring every game. You know,
seasons workout in different ways. I don't think he needs
to feel pressure, and honestly, I don't think he does.
You know, he's still he's still been massive for us
in the way that he holds up the ball and
tries to link play and he's always a threat.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
So in the end of the day, we haven't loss,
we haven't conceded.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
So yeah, I mean, obviously, I'm sure he probably would
love to get a goal, and even myself. But in
the end of the days, as long as the team's
doing well and we're performing, I think the rest of
the stuff will come out.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
One of the hallmarks of the team last year was
it water tight defense, and that's again proven to be
so this year. He as you say, you haven't conceded
in your first two matches, is to fence something lucky
that you have a role to play and even though
you are an attacking player.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah, big time, big time, I think. I think, honestly,
that's the way Steve sees the game. Is probably his
most important thing that he that he works on and
what we, you know, really strive ourselves on because I think,
you know that seeding goals is going to win, He's
going to win the championship is.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
Going to you know, take us further.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
So, yeah, we work a lot on pressing and whether
that's working back or and all that sort of stuff,
and you know, it's a part of the game that
I don't mind doing.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
I actually quite enjoy it sometimes putting in a tackle
or or working hard.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
And yeah, I think that's something that as I've grown
as a player, has gotten a lot better as well. So, yeah,
it just worked out well that it sort of fits
within how they want to play.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
And back to the front third. You alluded to it
before when we were talking about Sam, but just the
one goal for the team in two games, how do
you become more prolific? Is it just a matter of
continuing to do the same things and being a bit
more clinical creating the chances and they'll and the goals
will come. How do you How do you feel about that?

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (07:53):
I think so.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
I think, you know, with us, we've definitely got the
players to do it. And I think, you know, set
pieces for us is something that maybe that we need
to do a little bit better, and just with the
players that we have delivering the ball and obviously the
players that we have in the box, I think that's,
you know, something that I would say that we can
definitely improve on just over the last couple of games.

(08:16):
But you know, it's it's it's it's only been two games,
and I think like I said in the end of
the day, we haven't conceded with you know, we haven't lost.
We've got to win in a draw, and I think, yeah,
you know, the first couple of weeks of a season
are always a bit a bit different, you know. Obviously,
still players finding their feet or getting confidence to play

(08:37):
and stuff. So I think, yeah, I know, goals are
there to be had, so yeah, I'm hoping that. Obviously,
as the season goes along, things start to open up
and yeah, hopefully, yeah, get some goals.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
And I know you're only looking at Adelaide, but how
much are you looking forward to your first New Zealand
Derby next weekend?

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (08:57):
No, I've had my eye on that one for a while.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
I love a Derby, so yeah, I've got I've got
some stuff to prove for sure, but yeah, I'm looking
forward to that one.

Speaker 2 (09:09):
Yeah, we all are. Thanks indeed, Locky Locky Brook there
out of Auckland FC. They take on Adelaide United this afternoon,
five o'clock at go Media. You've got a couple of
spare hours on your hands and you're in the Auckland area.
Pretty good place to spend some time. The Fearrest Wheel
is up I hear at go Media and some great
football action as well from five o'clock.
