Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our get the
Leadout calendar. Forty years ago. On August fifth, nineteen eighty four,
now that David Gilmour's American tour was over, drummer Chris
Slade was back home in England. He had many prominent
drumming roles to his credit, including with ac DC, but
his next project involved a member of led Zeppelin. It
(00:21):
was Jimmy Page. Jimmy Page had booked studio time in
London under the assumed band name the mcgregors. Their band
lineup was a little more quote firm than their name
was at the time. Jimmy had selected the fretless bass
player Tony Franklin, along with Bad Company and Free vocalist
(00:45):
Paul Rogers. Jimmy was realizing his first band after led Zeppelin,
and they ultimately called the group the Firm. On August sixth,
nineteen seventy, led Zeppelin decided to start their summer tour
of the US. It was nine days earlier, and then
what they were actually able to do. Some of the
(01:12):
thrown away tour dates began at Crosley Field, a recently
vacated former home of the Cincinnati Reds. Zeppelin were unable
to make it, but it would have been perfect weather
for an outdoor summer concert. Four years earlier, in August
sixty six, Crosley Field managed to host the Beatles, just
about one week before they decided to stop touring all together.
(01:35):
Their opening acts all warmed up for a thunderstorm, and
the Beatles played at noon the next day. On August seventh,
nineteen seventy one, led Zeppelin's audience inside Montreue Casino was full.
Fans outside the venue could not get in to see anything,
but Zeppelin manager Peter Grant made sure they could at
least hear every note. Fans quickly recognized this guitar introduction.
(02:05):
One bended note was required to recognize Heartbreaker, but the
fans didn't necessarily have to recognize songs to appreciate them.
Black Dog was new to many fans in Montreue that day.
(02:29):
On August eighth, nineteen seventy one, led Zeppelin played a
second straight night at the casino in Montreux, Switzerland, on
the Lake Geneva shoreline. The two shows in Montreux were
led Zeppelin's last chance at warming up before a month
in North America. The song celebration Day was very new
to the live show. On the first night, Robert Plant
(02:50):
sang the first verse, but none of his bandmates initially
followed his lead to switch into the cars. Once they
got it all synced up again, it was all smooth
sailing from then. On thirty years ago, on August ninth,
(03:21):
nineteen ninety four, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant found themselves
inspired by the cultural music of the nowI Musicians, so
they joined a quartet led by Rahim l Bakani. Jimmy
and Robert were in the formative stages of a renewed
collaborative partnership fifteen years after led Zeppelin. The Canal is
(03:41):
his music is so melodically and harmonically it's moved. The
canals are bahilas as Smith's. If we can make the
most of that, it really brings out the best in
US too. US has writers instantly. Jimmy and Robert included
two songs recorded with the nowI Musicians on their Unlettered
video put only one of the songs on their album
