Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our Get the
Letout calendar. On October twenty eighth, nineteen seventy two, Led
Zeppelin played a sold out show in Montreux, Switzerland. Promoter
Claude Knobbs booked them at the Montreux Pavilion. Zeppelin's performance
impressed Chris Charlesworth, who wrote about it in The Melody
Maker for his UK readers. As he explains, Zeppelin capped
(00:22):
off their show with whole Lot of Love, which became
a medley quote a brief history of rock and roll.
Zeppelin are doing what they revel in. They proved themselves
with the complicated, sophisticated numbers, and here the fun starts unquote.
(00:51):
On October twenty ninth, nineteen seventy two, Led Zeppelin played
a second show in Montreux, Switzerland. The pair of shows
at Montreux Pavilion were a rare opportunity to play the
crowds of only two thousand apiece. Half of Zeppelin's forthcoming
fifth album was road tested. At this point, Robert Plant
had no album title to share. He called one of
(01:12):
the songs the Overture. That song title didn't last, but
otherwise the song remained the same. Fifty five years ago,
(01:40):
on October thirtieth, nineteen sixty nine, the James Gang opened
for led Zeppelin at Kleinhan's Music Hall in Buffalo, New York.
This was the second time those bands played together since
Joe Walsh sold his less pulse standard electric guitar to
Jimmy Page for five hundred dollars. This was only the
first time since led Zepplin two would come out with
(02:01):
Jimmy Page's number one guitar all over the album. During
the show, somebody launched a glass at the stage mid song.
It nearly hit Robert Plant, which set this off. If
you think you really very small. Fifty years ago, on
(02:29):
October thirty first, nineteen seventy four, Led Zeppelin's record company
welcomed members of the press and fellow musicians to a party.
It was Halloween night with a full moon, and where
better to celebrate than underground at Shizzlehurst Caves. Manager Peter
Grant arranged for partygoers to arrive in style Mercedes Stretch
limousines and rolls. Royce Phantoms Luxury Sedans provided shuttle service
(02:54):
from London to the tunnel entrance. The cost for celebration
was swan Song's UK album release, the first one because
Bad Company's debut album came out on the Island label
in the UK. Swan Song's first UK album release was
Silk Torpedo by The Pretty Things fifty five years ago.
On November one, nineteen sixty nine, Led Zeppelin played to
(03:17):
six thousand at an auditorium in Syracuse, New York, with
opener The James Gang. Terry Lee's review in the Syracuse
Herald Journal focused on both bands, saying, quote, the combined
psychedelic vibrations of the James Gang and the Led Zeppelin,
which is misspelled throughout the review blew the ears, mines
(03:38):
and cools of the Onondaga War Memorial audience on Saturday night.
The lead guitarists in both groups put on a show
that will not be forgotten soon. Uote, this is Karl Miller.
