Hi, this is Carol Miller. Welcome to our Get the
Leadout calendar.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
On December one, nineteen seventy two, Led Zeppelin played at
Newcastle City Hall for a second consecutive night. The two
shows there marked the beginning of Led Zeppelin's biggest ever
UK tour. During their second Japanese tour in October, Zeppelin
had debuted a song without a real title. Robert Plan
had been calling it the Overture at first, and then

(00:26):
the Campaign later on. As of these two nights in Newcastle,
Robert finally called it what we still know it as today,
the song remains the same. On December second, nineteen seventy one,

(00:54):
Led Zeppelin played for their one and only time in Bournemouth, England.
The venue was called Starker's Royal Arcade Ballrooms. Since two
thousand and nine it's been known as the O two Academy, Bournemouth.
The building originally opened in eighteen ninety five as the
Grand Pavilion Theater. Midway through Zeppelin show, audience members shouted

(01:15):
out their request by name. It was one from the
latest album. Eventually Robert Plant heard it and John Bonham
started the song intro. Fifty years ago on December third,

(01:42):
nineteen seventy five, John Paul Jones and John Bonham visited
the nightclub Beon's West Park. There they saw the weekly
gig played by Norman Hale, who had been the original
keyboardist for the Tornadoes in nineteen sixty two. Norman was

(02:05):
playing piano and singing, just like on his debut solo
album in nineteen seventy five, Norman Hale's rock House. Jones
and Bonham joined Norman on stage, and afterwards they promised
to return the following week with their other two bandmates,

(02:27):
you know who they Are. Thirty years ago, on December fourth,
nineteen ninety five, Led Zeppelin and Bad Company's former manager
Peter Grant was laid to rest in England. The members
of both bands attended Peter's funeral. As a direct result
of seeing each other that day, Bad Company ultimately decided
to reunite their original lineup, although it took a few
more years for it to happen. Led Zeppelin, on the

(02:50):
other hand, did not follow suit. For the most part,
things hadn't changed in a decade and a half. Peter's
funeral occurred fifteen years to the day after Led Zeppelin
disbanded following the death of drummer John Bonham. On December fourth,
nineteen eighty led Zeppelin had released their parting message, which
stated plainly that without John they could not continue as

(03:13):
they were. On December fifth, nineteen seventy nine, led Zeppelin
announced their first single and over three and a half
years Fool in the reigning promo copies labeled short version
contained only the first three and a half minutes of
the song and a premature fade out. The single was
also released in its entirety, which extended to longer than
six minutes. Led Zeppelin also announced that readers of The

(03:36):
Melody Maker had just voted them Best Live Act, Top Composer,
and Band of the Year, but not for Best Album.
Went to Zeppelin's In Through the Outdoor, Jimmy Page won
both Top Producer and Best Guitarist, and Robert Plant rechived
Best Male Singer. Led Zeppelin had become The Melody Maker's
most consistent award winners in the nineteen seventies.
