Speaker 2 (00:28):
Welcome, Vanessa, Hi.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Raman, can you hear me? You're right, I'm on speakerphone,
loud and clear. Okay, Well, I'm just bringing up about
my mum's I was adopted, so I had a booth
mom that gave me up and it was a real
good gift that she gave me. And then I was
(00:51):
adopted by the most more wonderful mother. Oh nice who
her wife take care of this day. She's eighty six,
you know, and yeah, she's the best. Moment. That is
very sal I've spoken to you before. I'm a bit nervous.
I've only rung the radio once.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Oh absolutely fine, No, take your time. We've got toll twelve,
so just you know, deep breaths. Yeah, So how are
were you when you were adopted? Vanessa?
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Teen days? Oh wow?
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Oh well she really is and has been your mum,
hasn't she.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah? Yeah, I met my birth mother before she died,
but my mum that raised me is my mom and
my dad. My dad was great as well. Yeah, so
they got to choose me actually, as far as I'm aware.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Oh, it's lovely. What was it like here? If you
don't mind me asking, I'll ask her. You can say
I'm not telling you go away, you're very noisy. But
what was it like meeting your birth mum?
Speaker 3 (01:54):
It was a bit scary to start with, but she
wasn't a nice enough lady. And I, out of all
her six daughters, was the one that looked like who
the most. She had five other daughters, and so I
met I met four of my sisters. No, I met
(02:17):
three of my sisters and I don't see them very
often now that because they live in Wellington and theo
my birth mother passed away. But yeah, no, it was
it was different.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
I can imagine what were some of the before you
met her and you knew you were going to be
meeting her, what were some of the things you wanted
to ask her?
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Why? Yeah, who my father was, which she wouldn't tell me. Yeah, anyway,
and she said the reason why was because the family
wanted her to do it. And so her sister didn't
even know that she had me until quite a long
(03:02):
time after. They kept it that they did a secret. Yeah,
because he was very shameful in nineteen sixty eight to
be pregnant and un wed.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah. Oh so you're the same age as me. So
was that a societal thing or was it more religious?
What was driving that? From her point of view?
Speaker 3 (03:24):
No, I think as her parents it was a societal thing.
I don't think they from what she said, I think
it was more like they were ashamed of her. Yeah,
so she always felt like she was not good enough. Yeah. Yeah,
her brother and her sister were put above her. It's
(03:47):
because of her behavior. But from what I understand also,
it wasn't actually that she went up and got pregant
on purpose. I don't know. I don't know what sort
of was a sort of a bit of date rape
or something like that sort of. I mean, I can't say,
(04:09):
but that's sort of what she said, that it was
forced on you.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Oh yeah, that's just terrible, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Well?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, and so beyond that, did you you did mention
she had other family, your aunts and uncles, maybe did
you remain in contact with them?
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yes, I say, I talk to her sister very now,
and then the uncle was passed away. I never meet him.
She's got a lovely sister and the daughters who my
sisters are lovely, good, good, good.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Well, Look, Venissa, I think it's very brave of you
to call, because this isn't for everyone to talk. But
you are just talking to me. If anyone else is listening,
then we don't know that to you, So I think
you're very brave.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Thank you, Okay, well, I thank you for talking to me.
It was lovely.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Oh yeah, no, it was an absolute pleasure. The pleasure
was all mine.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Once as much a drama far and I lifted up behind.
I had a friend. I heard that the ho a needle.
(05:18):
She was cruising about the man that when she is
a good I left it up behind a man, she
will up come come. I don't man taken charity from
(05:48):
those that I despise. Maybe I don't need to look.
I don't need dad. Maybe you can't shay me, but
you can't need my eyes. I don't need to.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
