(00:05):
Hey and welcome back to the A 24podcast.
For today's episode, we reunitedour favorite on screen
missionaries, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe E to talk Mormon lore,
being secret film Bros and the reception to their new breakout
hit, Heretic. We hope you enjoy the
conversation and be sure to catch Heretic now playing in
theaters nationwide. This is Sophie Thatcher and this

(00:28):
is. Chloe East and today we're
talking on the A 24 podcast. How many times have you seen the
movie? 6 * 6 Yeah, twice as much as me.
Really 3/3? I want to watch with like a big
group of friends. I went with my Mormon friends,
so I didn't. Was that yesterday or was that

(00:49):
the the Vista? That was no, I went to the
Vista. Wasn't Christopher Nolan there?
Yeah, I didn't see him, but apparently he was there.
It's absurd. That's when I was like, I saw
back in woods, yeah, they're Instagram post.
And I was like, oh, this is real.
Inject Peopleer. Jack Black.
When I think of Jack Black, he sings this like Elliot Smith
song in an interview. And the funniest thing, really,

(01:11):
I love him. Yeah, I know.
School of Rock was like one of my favorite.
Movies. Oh yeah, me too.
Yeah, you saw it with your Mormon friends there.
I saw that down in in San Clemente like it was.
So should we say this for the podcast?
I saw it down in San Clemente with all my Mormon friends and
not all of them, a lot of them. And it was such a Mormon

(01:31):
screening that there was a baby.Like a 5 month old baby.
Like baby baby. Too heretic.
So you do what you got to do. You got to get out of the house.
It's like, listen when you're onhousewife duties but you got to
see heretic. What did you think of the two
Whitneys doing? Oh, that was and.
What has the response been like from your Mormon friends?
Everyone has loved it. I can't even wrap my brain

(01:54):
around, like, how this happened. Not that I didn't have high
expectations for the movie, but it seems like it feels real.
Maybe everyone's in line, but like, everyone who's seen it.
Yeah, Yeah. I'm like Steven Spielberg,
actually like it. But it seems like everyone who
has seen it has sent me texts saying, like 100 out of 10,
Like, this was. I know there were people saying

(02:16):
this is the best movie I've everseen.
I'm like, this goes up hard. But it is like really, really it
is good. Like I know it exceeded my
expectations. I know.
And it keeps getting, I mean, but it keeps getting better each
time I watch it. Yeah.
And I do feel like the last timethat I watched it because we
didn't have AQ and a after and Iwasn't like, oh, I'm going to

(02:37):
fuck up. Like, oh, what am I going to
say? Yada.
Yada. Yeah, yeah.
I was able to, like, fully watchit and I finally was like, oh,
this, like the ending's heartbreaking.
Your monologue killed me. I look over to my mom and my
sister were both sobbing. Yeah, a lot of people were
crying at the. End.
And I wasn't, I didn't think it was that emotional of a movie,

(02:58):
but I felt at that time because I was like finally able to be
present. Yeah, I mean even shooting it
too. Like I thought I would hit a
wall of cries. And then when we got to that,
that part, I had like a whole nother wave of like emotions
just pouring out. I was so tired.
And then I like I realized of all the times I've read the

(03:20):
script, I never read it with thekind of maybe like the point of
view that you had when when you had the cry viewing, it's like
it meant something different than I always thought.
And so then I'm like. Be emotional now.
Oh. My God, like why am I crying?
And now and then Scott and Brianwere like, OK, wait, it's like
not you're like, OK, you don't really need a Tony.

(03:41):
I'm like wait, but now I'm like actually crying.
Action. I think it is emotional.
I think it's like very. I feel like the the movie
confirms whatever you go in believing in a very kind of
comforting way. I feel like it's different each
watch, and it depends on who you're watching it with in the
discussion after. Yeah, because if you're, I don't

(04:02):
know, and I watched it with Austin, we felt kind of bleak.
The first time, yeah. Then I watch it with my mom, and
my mom was like, yeah, just likesobbing and like, all emotional
and hopeful. Yeah.
So I think it just like, dependson who you watch it with, I
guess, or just your mindset before going into it.
Yeah. Which is so strange.
We know what's interesting is when because every time so seen

(04:25):
it six times, the five times Areyou going to?
You're probably going to see it more.
Because it's probably Will I Probably.
Will who do you need to see it with?
Like who's on your list? I have a couple more friends in
San Clemente I want to see it with and then just some like
hometown girls and those hometown girls and then there's.
Something about seeing with childhood friends.

(04:46):
Yeah, I had some childhood friends text me this weekend and
it like made me emotional that they.
I was like, oh, you, you care. I know you go out of your way to
see me in a movie. When the letterbox thing came
out, I mean, it was pretty edgy of me, but I said happiness.
Todd Salons is my favorite movie.
Yeah. And everyone was like, that's a
bold choice. That's pretty good stuff.
And then everyone was like, Sophie's a film, bro.

(05:06):
I was like, I just like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then they started like goingto like, oh, they're like trying
so hard to be. Protected because they're young.
Oh, I. Read all those comments.
Yeah, yeah, I did. Too.
And I was like, why should I? I did do.
I don't care. There was a dark day where I
went. I was like alone at a restaurant
having a glass of wine. And I was like, you know what?
I'm gonna go in letterbox because Chloe went on letterbox.

(05:27):
Yeah, yeah, I was inspired by you.
And that was like my one rule. I was like you cannot look at
letterbox rules. Wait, you never had?
I thought you had. I had one but I never looked at
the reviews and my God, I mean most of them are positive.
I know I was surprised because Iwas like.
Yeah, I didn't like really. Can't do that though and I'm
breaking all of my rules becauseI'm so bored.
I'm not working right now so I'mjust kind of like.

(05:49):
Scroll, scroll scroll. Scroll, scroll scroll.
Scroll. So you can't scroll.
It's yeah. Really obsessive, but it's kind
of, it's been pretty positive. And if anything, it's like
giving confident, like, yeah, I'm really happy for Scott and
Brian. And I'm like, I know extremely
happy for you because everyone has just been like, raving over
you. You know, kudos to Carmen Cuba,

(06:10):
the casting in this. Did you know her before?
Yeah, so she cast me in a show aday called Generation.
Oh, yeah, She told me about you.And I was like trying to look
everybody up. And then one of my friends who
like hadn't seen you in Fableman's, knew you from your
Disney show. She was like, yeah, the Disney.
Kid living Maddie it. Was just so strange to me.

(06:31):
I was like, Chloe's not a Disneykid.
Yeah. Does anyone know you as a dancer
beforehand? Because you were pretty,
actually, yes. Amazing seeing those videos it
was insane like you were prodigy.
That the movie I'm working on right now, there's a the
confidentiality girl who's on there every day putting stickers
on everyone's phones. She asked me, She's like, were

(06:53):
you a dancer? I was like, yeah, she's like,
yeah, I remember watching your YouTube dance, you know, show
stoppers finals or, or whatever.Like she.
Was. Yeah.
So you were. You danced.
I mean, if you scroll way back on your Instagram, it's all.
Dance, dance, dance, dance with my life.

(07:14):
I had somebody comment Tiffany, she did Broadway for A cause.
Oh yes. Did you do that?
Cadbury for a cause? Cadbury for a cause, yes.
I did it twice. Yeah.
Did you do it? Did you sing?
You did not. Yeah.
What year? There's a video 2012 I sang
thoroughly modern Millie no stoplife of me.

(07:35):
No. I there's a video if you look me
up and it's just full theatre kid.
And I'm honestly like, I watchedit the other day and I was like
damn. That was a little prodigy joke
about you. Like you were a theatre kid.
You were a theatre kid. Like belting.
I know. Are you gonna do it ever again?
Are you gonna go back to theatreor like musical theatre?

(07:55):
Musical theatre was the only I was like up for cabaret and I
feel like that's the coolest 1 you can possibly do is going to
be in London. Wait, Book a Mormon musical?
But sisters, it will translate. Oh my God.
Okay, so Cabaret. Cabaret.

(08:15):
You would have done that. I will do that at some point.
But it's funny to, like, think about where both of us came
from. You were a Disney kid?
Yeah. Slash dancer, insane dancer.
And I was just like a little musical theater.
Yeah, so funny how it's like started from very not not that
we've got gone to the dark side, but like very kind of like kind

(08:37):
of wholesome. Like I mean, I assume you're the
same way. But I feel like now I I like
want not nothing to do with. I think as a kid I just wanted
to be famous and as a kid I wantto be on Disney Channel.
Well, that's what you do. Yeah.
It's funny because I feel like I'm at a point where I'm craving
lightness. I mean, I love Is it have been

(09:00):
announced what you're doing right now or no?
No, I don't know if. It's OK.
We're not going to say really, OK, I'm not going to.
Say it might just like end up coming out.
I don't know I don't know it's like it's insane.
I like don't even know because I'm.
So bad at like keeping my mouth shut.
I'm always, I also have a very, I'm always jinxing projects
where if I get a call back, I'm like, yeah.

(09:21):
This is the one, Yeah, Yeah. Going to like my next project,
and I did that with this projectthat I thought I was going to be
doing. I just said it enough to enough
people. Yeah, where I was like, Yep,
something in the air. I jinxed it.
Yeah, I'm way too superstitious. And I was as a kid and I would,
this is like some crazy OCD stuff.
I would before auditions write like 3 pages of how the audition

(09:44):
was gonna go and be like I am going to book this, I am going
to. It was like some like.
Psychotic affirmations to yourself.
Or I guess it was. Interesting.
I've told somebody that and theythey said that and I was like, I
don't really believe in that, but it was kind of from an early
age. I would have these like tics
before going into an audition. Like I would have to write when

(10:06):
the shower was really like, I would have to like write in the
shower how it was going to go. And then I.
Had to say it right and I don't believe.
In that at all. But it was directly connected to
my OCD where it was just like little things adding up like
that. And if I didn't follow these
steps or take a shower before myaudition and write that down

(10:26):
three times in a row, screwed. I'm screwed.
Like I'm not going to get the audition and I've kind of calmed
down. But I had that where I would
have to do a prayer before everyshow.
When I was doing this play Diaryof Anne Frank, I had 200 shows
and I did a prayer before every show.
And it was just like our dear Heavenly Father.

(10:47):
Please bless that the show will go really well.
Please, I did the same thing with my dance.
I say these things, the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
I had had it memorized at that point that it almost felt like a
monologue. I remember there was one show
where I realized halfway throughthe show that I didn't do the
prayer and I was like, I just had this pit in my stomach.
Yeah, that pit was from not praying.
Yeah. Praying.
I was praying so much and it's just instilled in you.

(11:10):
Yeah, I know That's I don't. Is that, is that a Mormon
exclusive? I think it's, I feel like it's.
Mormon. Exclusive.
Exclusive. Yeah, no, I do the same thing
before dance competitions or. Do you still do it?
Yeah, I kind of still do like myown version of it.
Like I do it at least once a week.
Yeah, I'm like. Just I'm really nervous.

(11:31):
Or sometimes it's just like, please bless that I'm not
nervous, you know, just something.
Like it's sounds like journalingtoo, and keeping track.
Yeah, where it's just like putting it out into the world.
And again, I don't believe in manifesting.
Apparently you were a kid. Oh no, I was a man of the game.
But it was, I think it was just OCD and yeah, high anxiety.
Yeah, I definitely prayed beforegoing into the callback because

(11:54):
that was I think my first in person callback.
Yeah, it was mine too. Yeah, I remember just being so
nervous and it's crazy that we've grown up just having to do
self tapes. Right.
Because it's such a different experience on set, I personally
feel like I'm really bad at selftapes.
I mean, for a while I was reading with Austin and he just

(12:16):
has a really monotone fully. Same as Ethan, I do them with my
dad now. Your dad.
OK, Why is your dad kind of a stage dad?
Yeah, yeah, he is. He was a he like, he like
produced plays in London in his 20s because.
It's always the stage, mom. Yeah, that you have it reversed.
Yeah, my dad. Like he, he will read every

(12:38):
script within like 20 minutes. It gets sent to me.
Like my agents will call me like, did you read the script?
No, I'll call Howard. I'm sure he has like a debrief
on it. And you know, he gives the other
movies or plays. It's it's inspired.
By does he have he's good taste? He's great taste.
Yeah. You know, I feel like my my
taste. Grew up with good taste.

(12:59):
Owed to my dad. He had like a DVD of 7th Seal
and he's like, oh. Wow, like how?
Old are you got to get into Bergman?
I'm like 11. I don't think I watched it.
But Woman Under the Influence isone of your favorite movies?
Yes, one of mine, too. My dad, I was working in Canada
as a kid. I was like 14 or 15.

(13:19):
And for my whole life he was saying, like, oh, you got to see
a Woman Under the Influence. You got to see this movie, but
you're not ready for it. But when I was in Canada for
this job, he called me out of the blue and he was like, all
right, like you're ready for it.Like, you're ready.
Yeah. And I watched it I've.
Never seen any Cassavetes movie in theaters.

(13:40):
And there's something really, I know, I know, I know, I know.
When I first watched that, I waslike, 'cause I had to find a lot
of stuff on my own. My sister was in a lot of French
New Wave, but I was always like,oh, that's my sister's taste.
But I think for me, it was like when I was 15.
Have you seen Christina F? Yeah.
I watched that really early on. That's with like the Bowie.

(14:00):
Yeah, I was with Bowie. I remember the day that Bowie
died, I think I was like 15 or 16.
I slept in my mom's bed and refused to go to school for two
days as a protest cuz I was likeI love Bowie so much but
Christina was cool. I remember I would just like
draw her every day because I wasso obsessed with her and I would
just rewatch the movie over and over and I found that by myself.

(14:24):
I think through Tumblr, which islike the lamest.
Thing to say. Oh.
Yeah, I was a. Tumblr Back on Tumblr.
I'm still on it and it's still my the same username but I just
it's a great place to find art. I'm not even joking.
And the fact that it showed me like Christina.
I had a shoe gaze blog so I would just post a lot of just

(14:44):
music. Really.
Facts about music. Yeah, so is that woman under the
influence as well? I don't, OK.
I think Ellie, Ellie, my twin, had superior taste to me and was
just always on the Internet. And I think we had found Bo
Harwood, who died last year or ayear or two.
He does most of the cast of Eddie soundtracks, and Ellie

(15:06):
showed me a song from the soundtrack before I'd seen the
movie. Which movie?
A woman on the influence. It was the like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then I tried to learn that
on the piano before seeing the movie.
And then finally I saw the movieand knowing having the
soundtrack memorized and just like instilled in me, it's so

(15:30):
much more charring. That's cool.
And I feel like I've found that with a lot of movies like
Mysterious Skin, I loved the soundtrack to that.
Yeah. Soundtrack to That's great.
With Joseph. Gordon.
And Brady Corbet's in it. Am I crazy?
Yeah. Am I don't?
Yes. Brady Corbet's in it.
And he, he has the brutalist coming out this year, which is

(15:53):
like one of. And he's a kid actor in that.
You're right, Yeah. Oh God, I really I like walked
up to him because he was at the tiff after party.
Yes, and. I was like, I'm so excited for
the brutal and I was like, oh God, why did I even say
anything? No, I did too, yeah.
Yeah, I just feel like I was like, I don't even want to say
anything. Dude, that trailer is fucking

(16:13):
insane. So fucking awesome.
I cannot wait to see it. And they're doing 70mm showings
all around. There's a couple of theaters so
I'm gonna go. Maybe next time that Asia come.
Yeah, to see that would be amazing.
The score. OK, so mysterious skin.
The score to that, I'm trying tothink of other movies where it

(16:33):
was 20 Days Later. It was always the score that I
was drawn to. And then I would watch the movie
and be like, oh, this is an amazing movie.
But it's interesting that I always or not always, but
usually knew the soundtrack before going in.
I'm trying to think of other movies that I found by myself
when I was. Like on Tumblr.
No, it was, I mean, it was either through my sister or just
like I remember when I first gotmy own Criterion and it would

(16:57):
just get really high and like stay in bed and just try to like
watch every movie. Like the Criterion channel or
like they I like? Paid for the like a subscription
and I felt really adult and I felt really cool.
I watched The Double Life of Veronique and I remember drawing
Irene Jacobs. I was like obsessed.

(17:18):
I would watch these movies and then draw the characters and
just keep drawing them because Iwas so obsessed with their
faces. Betty Blue.
I remember watching that when I was in prospect and I went the
next day to Pedro Pascal and I was like, guess what movie I
just watched? And he was like, you're too
young for. Because I was one of your
favorites on Letterbox. Oh, it's my oh, you said.
I have a huge poster of it in mylike music room.

(17:41):
I saw Beatrice Doll at a Saint-laurent party.
That must have been really cool.I didn't say anything to her, I
just stared at her because I wastoo scared because I was like,
you're my eye. I know.
And then it's like once you talkto your idol, you kind of know
you're gonna say something embarrassing.
Oh, yeah. So I was like, I'm just gonna
stare at you from afar and let that totally.

(18:02):
So I'm glad I didn't say anything.
I live with the what ifs, the. What ifs because I've had where
I've met my idols and I had like.
Yeah, it's, I mean even or. They're just never, it's never
the connection that you expect it to.
No, because it feels so singular.
And then? It's I just start saying I love
you like I love you. I love you.
I love you so much. Like you don't understand how
much I. Love that for you.

(18:22):
That was Alfonso Quran at tiff Ithink ran.
For two madammons. Or no, for our heretic, because
I stayed a little bit longer andI saw a couple episodes of
Disclaimer. Yeah.
And then I went to the after party or whatever it was, and I
just went up to him and I. Wish I had stayed longer.
I just was like, I love you, I love you so much.

(18:43):
Like I just, I don't even know what to say to you because I
love you so much. Yeah.
Luckily he thought it was funny and I actually ended up talking
to him for a while. Something like kind of got past
it, but I was like, I'm just embarrassed because I can't
stop, I also told. Him it's good to be earner I.
Told him that he has the most like most attractive masculine

(19:04):
men in his movies. Like Children of men, E2, Mama
Tambien. Yeah, children.
Of like it was a movie that I grew up with.
Oh so I remember being like thisis peak.
Cinema, it's still so good. Watching it, it holds up so.
Well, I just don't know how he does those.
The the one takes, they're just, they're so good and they they
just play. Made it at the New Beverly and

(19:26):
seen it within. The New Beverly.
Dude, the new Bev does woman. They had a whole cast of Eddie's
Month like two years ago and theonly movie I didn't get into at
the new Beverly was, and I thinkyou'd appreciate both of these
was Jenna Rollins Q&A for Women Under the influence or might
have been shadows and faces, butJenna Rollins was in person.

(19:47):
I waited in line for three hours, got shut out and the
other one was Elliott Gould for Long Goodbye and I got shut out
of that one too. Couldn't get tickets.
Wow. Only two ones that I've gotten
shut out. I've never been actually.
Gotta go, I think. Have you ever seen any of Alex
Ross Perry's movie? Yeah, yeah.

(20:08):
I saw her smell there I think. Oh yeah, I remember when they
were doing her smell because he had.
A Yeah. And then I went because I was
like, supposed to be in his movie.
And then that fell through. I remember.
I think that was New Bed, right? It was New Beverly.
Yeah. So I have been.
Because they do. Yeah, I'm I'm pretty sure.
I mean, I don't know, I think Heretic, there's a chance might

(20:30):
go to the New Beverly if we can put it, put in a good word,
because they did it at the Vista.
So I feel like it only makes sense to move the print over to
the new bed. I don't know, I'm sad.
That I didn't see it at the Vista.
Is it done because? That was I, I don't know.
I actually don't know because I used to live a block away from
there. Literally a block away.
Oh yeah. And.
Now I'm really, I get that you're not in West Hollywood on

(20:53):
the East side. Yeah, that's right.
I mean more in like the. Canyons.
But every time I like come to West Hollywood, I'm like, ha ha.
Every time I pass Airwan and so we're like, I think of you.
I'm like the evil place the. Evil place we're Sophie goes,
ironically or not ironically, and it's not.
It became just like an everyday thing.

(21:14):
Oh yeah, I know. I'm like, why do I love Airwan?
It's so annoying. I'm like, can I just actually
hate this place? But I keep going back for sushi
and a lemon perfect water and which I don't know why they're
like it's like the cheapest. Drink.
I mean, they're the CBD drinks. Yeah.
Which is I feel like CBD is a mess.
Yeah. Was it the recess?

(21:34):
Drinks. Oh yeah, They're like really
sweet vanilla Recess, Yeah. Yeah, they have really cool
packaging. Yes yeah.
I love just going to air 1 and staring at the drink this way
and like this is like so beautiful.
I wish this. Was my friend.
Don't take a gummy before going in that air. 1 specifically
because you never. It's overstimulating, Yeah.
You never know who you're going to run into.

(21:55):
That's true. Never like the last thing.
I run into by air one the peopleyou don't want to run into air
1. Absolutely.
They just hide and like hide in a.
Different. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And what's your favorite Lana Del Rey song that isn't get
free? Are you a Lana Del Rey fan?
Oh, let's do it. I used to love Lana Del Rey, and
I would do well. I feel like this whole

(22:16):
conversation is just going to beabout karaoke.
Let's go. But this is when she was Lizzie
Grant, do you know? No.
Yeah, when she had heard like bleach blonde hair.
What you're saying Lana Del Rey?Was before she was Lana Del Rey,
she was Lizzie Grant. OK.
And it was kind of the same aesthetic, like very trailer
park, very like, yeah, I'm in the movie.

(22:37):
I drink Coca-Cola, whatever or diet or whatever the hell.
Pawn Shop Blues is my favorite. You should listen to it.
It's honestly really beautiful. That's your favorite?
Yeah. I love Lizzie Gray.
I haven't really listened to like recent Lana Del Rey, but
I've had people, which is a hugecompliment.
When people have listened to some of my songs that I've put

(22:57):
out, I think it's just because we both are very low.
Low and kind of. Smooth and my I'm always.
Like Melty? I don't know.
See. No, I love.
That gooey melty? I don't know.
And people have been really niceabout the cover.
Oh, it's so good. The cover is.
So good. It's been funny to hear the
reaction because I know that it is fade into you.

(23:19):
Yeah. And I've had people be like, oh,
you're gonna owe Mazzy Star somemoney.
I was like, no, that's the point.
Yeah, you should see me like I'mtalking.
Yeah. It's an iteration.
It's an iteration. Have you seen a movie?
So that has been a little, but then I also know like it works.
It's so clever in. The way that it's so.
Good. Did you know Mazzy Star fade

(23:40):
into you? No, I didn't.
But they're now listening to it.Yeah.
To back, I think it's the slide guitar.
Is that what Scott and Brian hadin mind, or did they?
Just I think it was Carrie. Really.
Because originally we had done it was interesting like I had.
Wait, where's? Carrie Coover, Stacy's husband,

(24:01):
who like worked on the OH. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, so I mean, he's done a lotof stuff.
Yeah, I love him. He had a bedazzled hat last time
I saw him. He's such a legend.
Nice. Yeah, he's so nice.
Such a sweet guy. But I'd like done it in the
studio in Vancouver and it was avery like finger picking guitar,
very like uplifting. And it was the opposite vibe.

(24:24):
And then apparently they didn't,they weren't totally into that.
So we just did Nazi Star. And I remember going into the
studio and I was like, Oh my God, it sounded gorgeous.
But I also think that it's just like it works so well for the
end of the movie. So you recorded it on your own?
I didn't record it or I like or did you?
Did it in Vancouver though. Yeah, they like sent me to the

(24:46):
studio. I remember responding within
seconds to their e-mail. I was on set.
And I was like, oh, my God, thisis like my dream just to like,
be able to collaborate in that way.
Yeah. And even just the, the more I
rewatched the movie, The more the guy who did our score does a

(25:06):
lot of stuff with Danny Elfman. And it all kind of made sense
once I looked him up. I met him at TIFF and he's so
good. But I love like, our original
songs in it. They're so they feel classic.
There's something timeless to it.
Yeah. Which I love that it doesn't
feel modern, right? Because I remember even within
that scene with the like other, when they pulled on your pants,

(25:29):
I was like, Oh no, I was. Like no, my pants.
I got pants. The pants.
Or your skirt. Don't worry about it.
I can't wear pants. You're not.
That's true. I got skirted.
I got skirted. I got skirted.
I'm sorry. It's so embarrassing.
But I remember that being, I remember that feeling off
because I was like, oh, this is like a timeless like it's not.
It almost doesn't feel that contemporary.

(25:51):
Right, right. Which?
Is what's cool about it. Yeah.
But then he mentions Londo, right?
And you're like, Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
We are here. Yeah.
We are here. Yeah.
No, I love your cover. It's so good.
I used to just tell everyone that my favorite cover all time
was Jerry Garcia's Knocking on Heaven Heaven's Door.
It's actually, I think it's a Grateful Dead version, not Jerry

(26:12):
Garcia Band, but have you? Seen the Grateful Dead anytime
recently? They I think they'll be back at
the sphere next year. We're going, you know, it's just
not even a question whether you like it or not.
I'm dragging you like it is justwill blow Fear this fear like
Sophie. You'd have so much fun.

(26:33):
It's not overstimulating. It's it's perfect.
I find like sometimes I like to be overstimulated.
Yeah, yeah. I'm like just going to have to
get some real estate in Vegas soI can just go to every single
show because I made it to five shows this past year during the
residency and I'm like 5 wasn't enough. 5 wasn't enough.
They have some like Cancun dead fest but my dad told me it's

(26:59):
really lame and I. Was your dad was a dead head,
right? Yeah, he was the dead head.
He's like the classic, like I'veseen the death 300 times like.
You like, you got most of your taste from your dad.
You were saying that kind of he's gonna be listening to this.
And he's like, I mean, like growing up I thought the
Grateful Dead was super lame. Like I thought it was, isn't
that? Funny how that turns around do.

(27:21):
You kind of. Discover it by it.
Is kind of old fart music, you know, but it's but I love it,
you know, I mean, he's so good. It like brings people together.
Yeah, no, I remember my dad would play Stop That Train when
it was a Jerry Garcia song in his car growing up on the way to
school. And I remember that song in
particular, I don't know why, was the only song in, like, the

(27:44):
dead Jerry Garcia universe that I liked.
And so that one just kind of sticks in my mind of like, but I
don't know, now that I've, like, been, I feel like baptized in
the school of the dead heads. And I'm sure my dad's like,
don't ever say that again. That's so embarrassing.
You play cool. You don't even talk about the
dead. One rule.

(28:06):
Yeah, he's probably going to be mad.
I'm even talking about the dead. He's like, no, you're such a
kook, but whatever. I am.
And now that I I've like, been to the show and, you know, it's
John Mayer. I'm like, oh, yeah, these are
some of them. Yeah.
Like John Mayer is one of the most talented people on this

(28:27):
planet. Like he's.
And then I'm listening to these Dead songs and now I'm that old
grandpa or dad who's like, listening to the guitar solos
during a Dead song and just like, oh, like that.
Yes. Like let's go guitar solo, so
awesome. Like a 12 minute guitar, so
awesome. Did you?
Ever see Freaks and Geeks? No, I know.

(28:49):
I'm sorry, kidding. I know I have a lot of holes,
no? Well, same.
I feel like you've seen all the classic movies.
I remember when we were first talking about movies, I was
like, oh, haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia.
Oh, it's so good, It's so good. But Freaks and Geeks, the last
episode of Freaks and Geeks, Lindsay, the main character, is
contemplating whether she goes to this what, like I think

(29:13):
college or something. Or with dead heads.
The song Ripple please. Yes.
So good. I love ripple.
I just. Remember watching that episode
as a little kid and sobbing. Yeah.
Oh, I got to see it now. Beautiful and it works so and it
was only one season and that's the last scene of the show.
Wow. And like talking about it now

(29:34):
I'm like. It's the last scene of the whole
show. Yeah, but that's, that was
always my I knew about Grateful Dead from that show and the Dead
heads, yeah, and the stereotypesabout it, but I always thought
they were just like it. Was a pretty funny South Park
episode. I'm not specifically dead heads.
But it's like South Park episodeabout everything.

(29:55):
So funny. I was just watching.
It's so funny. Watch that.
That's what I was watching in the hotel room.
That's like my, I said my. Yeah, yeah.
Hotel room. Yeah, every.
Time. That's the only thing that
centers me, is watching South Park in the hotel room.
I'm like OK. What was I watching?
Oh, I was watching the episode on Japanese toilets the bidets

(30:16):
last night and I was. You were just.
Such a random episode that just like usually they have some sort
of cultural meaning and I guess this one does too.
But like this one just seemed like just stupid funny.
Yeah. Like really made me laugh.
I was watching the one about musicals where he takes see
wicked and he's like if you see wicked, I'm not.

(30:37):
Even I don't think I've seen this one.
You should see it, it's very funny.
Yeah, classic. But I'm also musical theater
nerd, which. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sad to say, but it's coming out into the world.
You cannot hide it. I can't.
Hide it. I can't hide my past.
I also find it's interesting I've never had a press cycle
like this where I've had to talkabout my past so much.

(30:57):
Oh yeah. It's kind of a mind fuck and I
feel like feel like. I mean there never.
Oh my God, It truly feels like I'm discovering things because
I'm trying my best to be honest.Yeah, it does feel like, yeah,
first therapy, yeah, where I feel really raw after talking
about it. And I've never talked about
Mormonism so much in my life, right.

(31:19):
And now that it's such an open. Thing in the world, Open
discussion. Open discussion and then I'm
also trying my best not to offend anyone, right?
So it's. Just this really.
Weird line that I've never had to deal with during press.
I remember being horrified before this because I was like,
how the hell are we going to talk?
About. Oh yeah, me too.

(31:40):
I have a. Whole notes page of probably
like 10 pages of every possible question, yeah, that somebody
could ask me. I thought going into it we would
do interviews and they're mostly, it would be pretty
divisive. It was just how's Hugh Grant?
I was. Working with yeah.
Which is I have my like perfect memorized robot answer.
Like, he's a really funny guy. He's funny, genius.

(32:01):
Yeah, but it seemed like, I mean, the movie is accepted from
Mormons, ex Mormons, atheists. It seems so.
Yeah, I've seen some hate comments.
There's definitely some hate. Yeah, going back to you can't
read comments. But I'm like, does that say
something about your open mindedness when I started?
Probably also haven't seen the movie.
They probably haven't seen the movie exactly because it's like,

(32:22):
well, if you watched it all the way through, you would know this
is no personal attack on you. Yeah, but when I watched with my
in San Clemente with my Mormon crew, my last time I saw it, it
was interesting is in the beginning of the movie, there
was always like every other screening I've been to, there's
a lot of laughs in the beginning.
Oh yeah. When they're sitting on the park
bench talking about pornography, condoms and elephant trunk and

(32:46):
like all of that. There were no laughs and I oh
God, and they kind of trickled in later with like the Star Wars
and or even. Do you think they found it
offensive? I think they didn't know what
was going on. They were like this is an attack
or like this is and I think it'sreally smart of Scott and Brian
too, because you kind of have this crazy monologue start off

(33:11):
the the movie. It's such a good start and I and
I could see how like, you know, if you're a super faithful
practicing Mormon and watching it, you're like, oh, is this
gonna be a hate fest to my religion and my.
Beliefs. It's also uncomfortable.
It is, yeah. But what I like, what I realized

(33:31):
too, is like, even when we're about to go in the basement and,
you know, I'm like, thank you somuch.
Like, you know what? I.
Mean that honestly, you got the biggest laughs.
It does so flaps. Amazing because you read it on
the script. Thank you so much Could have
been read anyway, but you close right.
Thank you so much. You said it the.

(33:53):
Street Yeah yeah it's cuz it's it's like the nicety the it's
being nice to this sociopath I know but my it's every time the
last screening there wasn't a lot of laughs during that and it
usually. Gets a lot of laughs.
Always the. Wife.
Not that I'm, like counting laughs, but even when I asked.
Even when I asked Miss Reed. You're like you got a sheet.

(34:14):
I know. I'm like, OK, so volume.
Yeah, not I, But even like, you know, Mr. Reed, your house is
beautiful. It's like a church in here.
Did you build it or like so? Kind of.
What I realized with my crew waslike, oh, this is like they
don't see this as abnormal. Like they're they are almost

(34:38):
Paxton. Like you would be nice and you
would of course. You would say.
That yeah, you would say that and like, yeah, you leave
someone's house, you're always nice, you know, there's like
this nicety that like, it's not foreign.
And so I think when other peoplesee it and they're like, Oh my
gosh, like, how could you possibly like, you know, it's,
it's funny to, you know, speak to someone in that way who's a

(35:00):
sociopath and, you know, making you believe that, you know, you
might be in a lot of a lot of trouble.
Yeah. The laughs were always, you
know, kind of like other like someone did laugh during the
meow, you know, and I was like, thank you.
I love when people laugh at Hughes meow.
But yeah, it was definitely thatwas the most like eye opening
screening I I had. What has been the best screening

(35:21):
or the best audience? Because I feel like this.
Movie is very dependent on how your audience reacts.
I feel like the sound at the Vista was game changing for me.
Like it sounds so good and that audience was really did.
You get to meet people. Not really, I think I.

(35:42):
Recognize. You no, I mean, I I I did a
little intro, you know, I said like what's?
Up. Hey, guys, it's me going.
But I like, yeah, I said a couple of words, you know,
excited that they had this footprint and showing it and and
whatever. But no, I kind of like I was
wearing my hoodie. Like I look completely different

(36:05):
than Paxton, but like, I really don't think No, I, I, I no.
Do you think people assume that you're similar to Paxton?
I always find that with roles that I play.
Probably. That like people always assume
that I'm Natalie and I feel likeit's kind of like gotten into my
subconscious where I'm like, oh,this is what they think.
It's like they're projecting something onto me.

(36:26):
Right. And you're like, why do I start
to compensate for this for? Compensate and like try so hard
not to be or like sure, follow what they're thinking.
It's this whole like dilemma of like, who am I?
But I find that's interesting where you, like always play
religious characters. Yeah.
And you're not. I mean, you are.

(36:47):
But like then you talk, you listen this and you talk about
the grateful. You talk about like it's totally
the opposite. Yeah, I don't know if Paxton
would like the dead culture. What would?
Paxton, listen to do you think did you didn't ask that at all,
No. I got asked like music specific
question on like. Yeah, Paxton listen to Yeah,
What would she listen to? I.
Mean she probably went to like the Katy Perry concert and like,

(37:11):
honestly, she probably like loves Taylor Swift.
Totally. Sabrina Carpenter.
I can see very girly, girly pop like go with your friends, wear
your sparkles, make the sign. Yeah, I think that that's very
like. Pans out.
Yeah, I think that's Paxton adjacent, which is, that's not
me, I. Was like, that is not, no, it's

(37:32):
so interesting 'cause you're so far from the character, but I
think when you're a good actor, people just assume that you're
in the character. Yeah, when I went up for the
intro, my friend was like, I don't think anyones gonna know
that you're even in the movie because of the way I was
dressed. I guess I was like, yeah, I'm
set design. Yeah, I don't know, I'm like
similar. And I mean, I like Taco Bell and

(37:54):
talking about fast food for sure.
So that's yeah, that's definitely accurate.
I feel like it it's like a it's easy for me to play someone like
Paxton. I like, I feel.
Like it comes from. A real place.
Oh totally. You're channeling something
that. But it's not me.
I don't you know, it's it's. Not.
Me isn't. That.

(38:16):
But are you Barnes? You know.
No, I can be serious but I feel like she's like serious to
another. Yeah.
Extent. You're silly.
We have fun together. Like Sophie likes video games
and karaoke and like, you know. They're playing all these really
serious. Yeah, yeah.
Goals like even Natalie. I mean, Natalie.

(38:37):
Can we're goobers. We're true, and that's why we
get along, yeah. We're just a couple of goobers.
SpongeBob movie. Wow, that.
I want to rewatch that and cry. Yeah, you haven't seen the
musical. I would watch that.
SpongeBob Musical. Yeah, I've not seen SpongeBob
Musical, but I'm so down. I'm so down to see SpongeBob

(38:58):
Musical SpongeBob on Broadway. It.
Yeah, it is. It's real.
That would be legendary. OK, so you answered your
favorite Lana Del Rey song, which is a Lizzie.
Grant. Lizzie Grant and it's called.
Pawn Shop Blues. Pawn shop Blues.
It's very sad. Sounds really sad.

(39:19):
Is really. Sound.
I guess my favorite Lana Del Reysong, if I mean totally honest,
I don't know a lot of them or the names of them sometimes.
Oh yeah, yeah, I know that one. But I did a dance solo to a Lana
Del Rey song, Young and Beautiful.

(39:39):
I think that's what it's called.Yeah.
So I did a solo to that so. Let's.
Say that let's say it might thatusually might be star powered in
2013 walking to the stage dance mom style.

(40:01):
Yeah. Oh.
That's a good question. If you could star in a remake of
any movie, what would it be? I.
Don't I feel like I try to find?I've tried to answer this
before, I don't know. Do you have one?
Maybe I can think. Cabaret.
OK, Cabaret, there you go. The movie is, but the movie is
so good and it's so 70s. It's 70s, right?

(40:22):
Yeah, and it's just like, really?
Have you seen it? I haven't seen it's.
Strangely, like art house, really, it is shot in such a
strange way. But I would say that, or I'm
trying to think, oh, I mean, everyone had an obsession.
I had a obsession with Penny Lane, almost.
Famous. I've seen that movie probably
more than any other movie. And I remember just as a kid, I

(40:45):
was like, I need to be her like. You, you would be a good Penny
Lane. Thank.
You. I just want to.
Play a group manifest manifest. That's the groupie.
That's those are good ones. It's such a hard question.
It's a hard question, but like, maybe.
I mean, I do like I was going tosay maybe Phantom of the
Paradise. I guess it's not the star, but.

(41:10):
Or actually, I don't know. Hey, Kill Bill would be fun, I
guess. Yeah, we'll go kill.
They're gonna in 10 years. Tori Hanzo Sword.
Yeah, yeah, I'm down. I'm down for years.
Samurai sword. Sword moment.
Japan. Wow.
There's like so many aspects of shooting that that I would love.
So badly love Japan. Who would be your dream
directors to work with? I have like a pretty long list.

(41:33):
I mean, I do. I don't want to sound like a
complete film bro of like. Sounds.
To it. Honestly, I would love to work
with Tarantino. Oh, of course, I know that's not
super avant-garde, or I used to.Original.
You should watch him. Fiona Apple's like my favorite
person ever. Him and Fiona Apple have a lot
of funny interviews together. Really like a strangest duo.
No way. But you should.

(41:55):
And he's just like singing backstage to the Fiona Apple
lyrics. And it's so.
Funny. Wait, that's hilarious.
I want to go to like the Largo and see them or something.
Oh, that is funny. I would.
Love to who else is on your list?
I mean honestly Alfonso Quran, who I like already, told him I
loved him and a million. Times It's good you met him.

(42:15):
Yeah, maybe I manifest manifest.Just write it in your channel 3
pages of. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, Yeah, Exactly,
Exactly. Yeah.
I'll take notes from Sophie. I don't know, like, I I do like
kind of controversial Paul Schrader.
Are you? When does that movie come out?
Oh, oh, Canada. I don't know.

(42:36):
Paul Schrader, I feel. Like I don't know when that
comes out. He I don't know.
He has some like big swings and I like I loved first reformed.
I still haven't. Seen it.
That's the movie that people were shoving down my throat that
I have to just watch out on my own accord.
I really liked it. I feel like it's oh.
I've heard on your music, but I.I think it's it's awesome.
And in lieu of Heretic and and all, I think you know it it it's

(43:01):
yeah, on brand to like do a double feature of hair taken and
1st reformed. Yeah, hey, that could be a good
double feature. Let's do it.
Let's do it. Who are your directors?
I don't really know. I mean, I feel like all my
favorite directors are dead. Yeah.
But I think that with all my favorite musicians.
Yeah. Everybody.
Because Kelly Reichardt. Yeah, she's really cool.

(43:21):
Yeah, and I always, I still haven't seen her Michelle, the
showing up. So I haven't seen that.
But Wendy and Lucy is one of my favorites and I just want to
work with more female directors. Not to sound like, but it's
true. I just want to experience that
because I haven't really experienced that.
Yet right. Right.
I have. With TV.
But yeah, TV is such a differentbeast.

(43:44):
It's like you don't actually gettime to talk to the.
Director, right, right. It's like you don't.
Get to know the director at all.Yeah, that's a good one.
Favorite piece of Mormon lore? Food, I guess.
Food. OK, wait.
Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah is. That what we're talking about,
yeah. Frog eye salad yeah is my
favorite thing in the world. It's the most like random ass
grandma food. I've never had it.

(44:06):
Are you cute? Never had it.
And you told me this all you're shooting.
About me to be Mormon and I was always when I was younger I was
like 8 and I'd be like what's your favorite color?
Favorite food? Is it frog eye salad?
Favorite. Food and people are like, oh,
that Sophie girl's really quirky.
And I'm like, no, you guys. She likes it.
Frog eye salad. It's savory, it's sweet.

(44:26):
But. It's so sweet.
It's like. Like, is it jello?
It's like this tapioca pudding as.
Scam. I should make it for
Thanksgiving, We should make it respectively.
Also. Thanksgiving.
The jello pretzels, What is thatcalled?
So good I don't know what it's called.
Whipped cream with the pretzels and the jello laser.
Lee Mormon Food. Slaps.

(44:47):
So. Fire, it's Fuego guys.
Fire. It's slaps.
It's so good. Yeah, I love.
I don't even know what that's called.
Just called the good stuff the good Jelly pretzel, anything.
About Mormon underwear, I didn'teven really know what the lore
was around that, which shows how, like, disconnected I am.

(45:08):
Yeah, I was like, really? Because people always ask me
that. Well, even in in Heretic when I
get skirted pants, that was one moment where I was like
especially like when I last timeI saw it, I was like, this is
the one moment that is going to I think blatantly offend people.
Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because it's, you know, you

(45:28):
don't, they're, they're very sacred.
You don't show them. You know anything about it?
And I knew that was going to be controversial, but I'd
pleasantly surprised by the. Reactions by it.
I mean, like personally, I thinkit is important to show if
anything, like you feel bad for Paxton, you're not like you
build that. Look at her magic underwear, you

(45:50):
know, but also like what my friends who went on missions
were saying was like, dude, thisis totally something that would
happen. Like you experience stuff like
this and I shock failure. No, I think it's just truth.
Like it just shows what could happen on a mission.
And I do think a lot of people, a lot of practicing members
watch it and they do appreciate it and they appreciate the

(46:12):
honesty and and think it is not sacrilegious to to show that or
that have that moment. I mean, it's kind of up in the
air can go both ways, but I think it's done in a respectful
way. And I think it's it says
something to like Paxton and Barnes's mindset before they go
and and also you feel bad for us.
You're not like. TikTok roles.

(46:33):
Show those magic underwear like what the fuck no.
It's a different movie. Yeah, I guess we answered that
question. I don't know.
Should we wrap it up? Yeah.
How do we wrap it up? Nacho cheese or ranch Doritos?
I'm sorry, I'm just reading. OK, this is all right.
This is how we're going to wrap it up.
We're going to wrap it up. Nacho cheese or Ranch Doritos?

(46:54):
Dude I'm so conflicted because Iwas in Taco Bell yesterday, you
were and I asked for extra Nachocheese on my quesadilla and I
also got a Doritos Taco which isn't ranch Doritos I guess.
I'm gonna do Nacho cheese. Yeah, I think I'm gonna go Nacho
cheese, especially the Taco BellNacho cheese, which is.
My boyfriend's car exploded in the Taco Bell driveway, so we're

(47:18):
not allowed to go to Taco Bell anymore.
We don't talk about Taco Bell. Wait, when was this?
What? A week ago.
Dude, Taco Bell will forever be in our lives.
Like big moments in our lives. You know it, I can't escape the
bell. You know I'm going to get a talk
about tattoo. Just a Bob Blast tattoo.
Just out there. I think that's a good don't

(47:39):
jazz. That was kind of fun.
