Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Battleground Podcast. You'll play for all things.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Resting and exclusive interviews with some of your favorite wrestlers
around pot stop.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
It, What's up you guys? Welcome back into Rock ninety
four to nine, Omaha's rock station, as well as the
Battleground Podcast, iHeartRadio's official wrestling podcast. Now, we are very
excited because WWE Monday Night Raw is coming back to
Omaha c CHI Health Center this coming Monday for Raw
(00:41):
on Netflix and Today. We are very excited because we
recently talked to her not too long ago, and she
didn't have Tag Team Gold then, but we put it
out there in the universe last time she was here,
and I think maybe we had something to do with that.
But give it up for Raquel Rodriguez joining the show.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
A pleasure to be back as a four time Women's
Tag Team Championship.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Thank you absolutely. I remember last time we talked, we
tried to make sure that we could get you a
a certain menu item on the water Burger menu. We're
still working on that. We're still working on that. I
think now that you're the champ, we can kind of
make that even faster. Say hey, guys, look the champ
needs this thing.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
So it's make it happen to day Monday before the show.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
If I have to walk into Waterburger holding this and
speak to a manager or whoever is in charge of
your local water Burger, I will. I will let them
know I need to have my or this coming from
a Texas homegrown girl. Waterburger Texas homegrown, so I know
how it works, Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Right, absolutely, So we got to make sure and I
will go back to the video that we had last
time and send them and be like, this is the
burger she wants. Put it on the menu and call
it the Raquel, or we'll figure out a name for it.
I remember works, Okay, tell them we want the Raquel
with a side of fries and spicy ketchup. That's what
we're doing. Uh So, let's let's start off by saying
congratulations on reclaiming the ww Women's Tag Team Championship. Would Live,
(02:05):
how does it feel to be that record holder, like
you said, of the Women's Championship Tag Team Championships And
what does this accomplishment mean to you?
Speaker 2 (02:14):
H It feels so good.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
It feels really good because it just affirms everything that
you know live and myself have been saying this entire
time that we are the greatest tech women's Tag team Champions.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Of all time.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
So just to know that we, you know, got them
back and we made history by becoming the first every
three time tag team champions and then having that little
upset at WrestleMania, but getting them right back the night
after and becoming the history making record breaking four time
women's tag team champions, greatest of all time. It just
it feels really good, like I'm on cloud nine. Me
(02:50):
and Live are just history making and we're setting records
and we don't plan on stopping. We're on a roll
right now, and this truck is just going to keep
going and going and going.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Nothing's gonna stop us now.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
And we'll go ahead and say that you losing the
titles at WrestleMania. Will put an asterisk on that because
it wasn't fair to y'all because you were expecting Bailey
and Lyra and all of a sudden there's that wrench
thrown in and Becky Lynch shows up. But then the
next night, Becky Lynch turns on Lyra. So we're gonna
put an asterisk next to that loss for you guys
(03:21):
at Mania there was.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
A bunch of nonsense that was going on that obviously
didn't really involve us and our greatness. It still has
had no effects on us and our greatness, So we're
okay to just push that little incident aside and move
on to bigger.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
And better things.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Well, I have to say I was at the raw
after Mania in Las Vegas and I saw you guys
reclaim those belts. Is very, very exciting, So again, congrats
on that. So, you know, as a performer, you're kind
of well known for your size and strength, but I
mean really, especially in the last year, fans have been
able to see that the versatility, which is you balance
(03:57):
and power moves with you know, tying in more of
the emotional storytelling. How do you balance being the powerhouse
of the team while still finding ways to connect with
the audience from a storyline standpoint.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah, you know, I just tried to think to my
younger self and how I would have felt seeing myself
out there in the ring and seeing this big, strong
like kind of you know, I spoke about that. I
speak about Beth Phoenix a lot because she had such
a big impact on my style of wrestling, and just
as a strong woman in general, So like looking at
her as a little girl, I love to see how
(04:31):
she was able to balance the beauty with the brawn
and still have her sensuality on the outside kind of
like you said, in like these different character moments, but
still being the strong powerhouse while she was in the ring.
And so that's how I kind of see it. When
I'm in the ring, I know that I'm Raquel, I'm
the powerhouse, and I'm going out there to obviously get
stuff done, right, That's that's the move right there is
(04:52):
I know my role in my tag team, But outside
of that as well, I want the audience to know
that I'm a real person and that we can't connect
and that they can find things in me that are
in common with themselves and relatable. And even if they can't,
that makes it even better because that means that I'm
just even more unique of a person that they would
want to gravitate towards more on television as well. So
(05:12):
I just really tried to emulate being myself my same
goof yourself all the time, while still remembering that I
am big and strong and powerful.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
At the same time.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
So and honestly, it's just something that I feel like
has come with the time of being in the ring.
I've been with WWE for about nine years now, and
so those two have kind of had that amount of
time to melt together and create Raquel Rodriguez, and I
think they're doing pretty good.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Yeah, And I wasn't able to hop on the last call,
but I saw you on an NXT tour. This was
before COVID. This was in twenty nineteen, I believe, and
this was in It was in South Haven, Mississippi. It
was right outside of Memphis, and I think this was
still like blue jeans, kind of like a most cowboy
(06:00):
kind of rockcail. So it's been just very very awesome
to kind of see you evolve involving kind of grow
into this character.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Speaking of back to her too, you know, like she
was like all power and right strength, and you know
at that time too, she had the cowbell and like
you said, the jeans and the shorts.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
And I was really trying to find that inner beast at.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
That time, right, because of course I came from collegiate
sports and I came from group sports and stuff like that.
And yes, you have your beast, but you're also a teammate.
So you're working with a lot of people, whereas in
wrestling you're just there alone, you know what I mean,
And so you don't have people telling you to like
g up. You gotta find that within yourself. And so
that was kind of like my era of finding that
inner Beecet right and learning to use her a little
(06:42):
bit more.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yeah, that's awesome, absolutely for sure, and of course a
lot of people are excited about it. Ww making its
return this Monday night for Monday Night Raw Live and
Omaha Chi Health Center, of course, will keep all the
details for you. Rock ninety four to nine dot com
is where you can go for all the details about
the show. Now, I do want to kind of talk
about this because this is something really cool, and you
(07:04):
have been very outspoken and very talking about how important
this is for you and your Mexican American heritage and
how important that is to you and how you want
to represent that in WWE. How have your roots influenced
your entering style and your mindset and the way you
carry yourself as being a role model to young Latina fans.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Yeah, I mean they influenced me a lot.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
It was a big decision for me when I was
coming into the business that you know. I wanted to
try and keep my legal last name or a last
name of Hispanic heritage, because I want people to know
that that's where I come from and that that's who
I am. Yes, I was not born in Mexico. I
was born here in the States, in South Texas. But
I'm still from an area that was very much, you know,
kind of like secluded from the rest of Texas.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
We spoke Spanish.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
A lot of my students, my co fellow students in
high school would cross the border every day to come
to school, so like I did grow up in that
culture with that same you know, ideology and just mental.
What's the word I can say, influence, you know what
I mean? So like the word king guana, I'm gonna
say it on the radio. I think it's okay, But
(08:11):
higuana means badass, you know what I mean, And that's
how we use it. That's how I use it here.
I think it's a beautiful word. People have always told
me to beachinguea my entire life. I find it in affirmation.
I feel like it fires me up, so I still
use it. I tell myself to always be Changuana. I
post it on my Instagram still and I love using
that for people as a word of empowerment, because women,
(08:31):
especially Latinas, we should use that as empowerment and we
can be.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Beautiful and we can be strong.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
And I just want all of those Latinas to know
I'm from the same areas and I come from the
same background as them. But I want them to know
that I didn't stay in my box, and they don't
have to stay in their box either. They can be
ching guanas, they can go after whatever they want, they
can go after their dreams and they can accomplish them.
And so I just want to remind them that they're
not contained to what the what their area is pretty
(08:58):
much their little box.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
That we're always the clear right.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
So can we can we get w W two make
a Chinona's shirts? Can we put that out there? I
mean we are in the Netflix area where.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
You know it's I said, I'm gonna say it on
the radio because I know it's okay, I've played on radios,
but I know with like networks and stuff like that,
it's still considered a bad word.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Well, I mean Netflix, We saw Pat McAfee c coust
this past Monday, so I mean it can happen.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
There you go, and if you can make money, I
think I think there will be for.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
You know, one thing, a lot of people very excited
about with the news at WrestleMania with WWE now partnering
up with Triple A. When you think of uh, you know,
the Lucha Door and Mexican wrestling, you think of Triple A.
What does that mean? When you see w W partnering
(09:51):
up with Triple A and and just bringing more of
that that Latin wrestling to more fans worldwide, it gets
me so excited.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Honestly, it made my heart just like explode with happiness
for everyone that was up there representing the announcement of
merging with Triple A. I seeing Triple A there represented
by their their founder in the audience at WrestleMania.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
I grew up watching Triple A two again.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
I'm from the border of Texas, so like, not only
did I have WWE, but I also had Triple A.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
And Saturday morning wrestling.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Lucha Libre, especially the Lucha Libra that was always live
in my backyard with all the lucellotas. I think it's
a beautiful, beautiful style of wrestling and and just the
intense passion that they bring and the crazy moves and
just the creativity from the masks to the moves.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
It's just so cool, and so I'm just so excited.
I really am excited.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
I hope I get to be a part of any
little bit that happens with Triple A. I hope I
get to go over there and perform with some of
their female lucellodas.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
They are amazing as well. So I'm really looking forward
to this. It's going to be huge.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
That's that's great answer. That's an awesome answer. So you
live or now for to Champs? What does this or
I guess, how does this rain feel different from the
previous ones? Is it sweeter perhaps or something? And now
kind of adjacent to that, do you still have your
singles goals that you're you have in the back pocket
(11:16):
or you kind of like just full stam ahead with
the tag team right now.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
I would definitely both still have our singles goals.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
You know, we both definitely want to conquer everything and
anything that we can. Well, we're pretty much doing the
best work that we have done together overall, and I
think that's what makes this rain feel a little different.
It's a little bit sweeter because I can feel that
we are just you know, intermingling like a really good
team and just on fire overall when it comes to promos,
(11:43):
when it comes to end ring work, when it comes
to teamwork, live and iron firing on all cylinders. And
so I think this is probably the sweetest rain we've had.
I don't see this rain ending anytime soon, but we're
definitely keeping our eye on the singles, you know.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
I mean, Eo Skuy.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
She can't, she can't just not have any opponents, you
know what, Ria Ripley's had her chance, Live Morgan have
another little taste, and then when Becky and Lyra finished
doing what they're doing, I'm gonna come back for that
intercontinental title, because again, God didn't bless me with these
two big, beautiful shoulders so.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
That I can only hold one title. It just makes
no sense, right I should have another one.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
That is that is very true. I think I think
an icy title is in uh Raquel's future very very soon.
I'm gonna go ahead and put it on record that
it's gonna happen by the end of the year.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Maybe I'll go pay a little visit to SmackDown two
into the new US title holders A Lenavie. I love
to crush that little just racking them up. I'm just
gonna rack them up, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Hey, I mean not no shame there getting all the
titles and then and cashing all those paychecks that you
get with those titles.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Shirt. Rack them up, Raquel, there's another t shirt.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
I hope WW is paying attention as they're just doing this.
So as as a champ, I know your time is precious.
So we're gonna wrap things up here in just a second.
But we have two final questions that we want to
ask you. If we were to scroll through Raquel's music
playlist right now, if we just started going through and
we say, huh, didn't think kel would listen to this?
(13:15):
What's one of those surprise songs on your playlist that
were like, I didn't think she'd liked this?
Speaker 2 (13:22):
Well, let me ask what kind of music do you
guys think I listened to?
Speaker 1 (13:25):
I mean, I think you listen to everything that's I
mean everything.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
I would say you lean towards country for some reason.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
I would probably say classical is not on there, like Beethoven.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Okay, yeah, definitely not. I'm not listening to classicals. Definitely not.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
I do listen to everything. I do love country, I
love Tehinel music. I listened to, I listened to hip hop.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
What's the song? You know what?
Speaker 3 (13:46):
I just download this song and it's only because it
takes me back. So it is a little bit of
a millennial song. But it's called rush.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Uh huh.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
It's just oh.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Not bewitched, is it?
Speaker 4 (14:01):
But I love being that was a girl. It was
like Jennifer something right.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Yes, Jennifer Uh oh man, it's gonna kill me if I.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Don't think of it. I got it on my phone here.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Yeah, because for the longest time I thought that was
yes Page. There was a couple of things she hit
that kind of had like some Maria and inflections, but
then at like seven months later, like, oh that wasn't
Mariah this whole time, but yeah, that's a one hit.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Was like, honestly, there's some one hit wonders on my
phone from when I was younger, like Will Afford, Oh yeah,
he had.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Just that one song, I want to Be Bad, And
that song literally.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Still hypes me up though, Oh yeah, I want to
be bad sometimes and I'm like, oh, yes, I'm ready,
let's go kick.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
Some Yeah in the ring, absolutely for sure. Now, last question,
and I think I already know the answer to this one,
but we're gonna ask any details that you can give
us because you're you and live or BFFs. Any little
details you could tell us about this movie thing that
she's teasing your everybody with because we see the things
(15:01):
online and maybe you could give us a hint or
do we just find out this Monday night when Monday
Night Raw is live in Omaha.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Yeah, I'm sorry. I think you guys are gonna have
to wait. You know, I like y'all too, We have
great conversations, but I don't.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
Like you that much, so you're gonna have to wait.
The secret's mine.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
Well, Raquel, it's an honor to have you back on
the show. Glad to see you have more championship gold
around your shoulders. We're hoping to see more in the
coming months. And before we let you go, anything you
want to say to people watching and listen to this
right now.
Speaker 3 (15:32):
Just remember Monday Night, Omaha, Nebraska, and when you're sitting
out there and you see me come through that curtain,
I want to hear Rack them up, Raquel, Rack them up,
Raquel so that I know you guys are really like
you know, behind me,
