show. If you miss an hourof it, you can always go to
the website and get into the podcastlibrary to hear past programs. All right,
we also have a health pole question. We'll get to that shortly,
(02:30):
but we begin this hour talking aboutall this plastic Have you heard all this
microplastic in the environment that researchers areconcerned about that we're ingesting plastic, these
plasticizers and plastics in our water bottles, plastic water bottles and foods, and
(02:50):
it's accumulating in the body and it'sdisrupting hormones. Well, here's the latest
research. Researchers are finding plastic junkin men's testicles. New meaning to junk.
There, junken men's testicles. Whetherit's our bloodstream, or brain or
lungs, These microscopic fragments of plasticsseem to turn up every time scientists scour
(03:17):
a new corner of the human body. The male reproductive organs are no exception.
New research published this month finds microplasticscan build up in the testicles of
humans and dogs, raising more questionsabout the potential health impacts of these particles,
(03:38):
which ought not being the body they'repetrochemical. Animal studies have shown exposure
to these microplastics within our food chainand water can impact sperm quality and male
fertility, but scientists are still inthe early stages of translating this work to
(03:59):
human health try to figure out whatit means and what the implications are all
about. One of the lead researcherssaid, and I quote, microplastics are
everywhere that according to doctor John You, a toxicologist in the College of Nursing
at the University of New Mexico andlead author of the study I'm talking about
(04:26):
the quantification of those microplastics in humansis the first step to understanding its potential
adverse side effects. That's according todoctor You, the toxicologist. When he
set out to do his study,Doctor You didn't expect microplastics would have penetrated
(04:46):
the male reproductive systems so extensively, given the tight blood tissue barrier around those
organs. To his surprise, theresearch team unearthed a wide range and heavy
concentration of microplastics in the testicles ofabout two dozen men and close to fifty
(05:12):
dogs. The results may also berelevant to a well documented global decline in
sperm count and other problems related tomale fertility. This trend has been linked
to a host of environmental and lifestylefactors, including certain endocrine disrupting chemicals found
(05:34):
in these plastics. The growing numberof studies like this one are compelling and
should be a wake up call forpolicy makers. According to Tracy Woodroffe,
director of the Environmental Research and TranslationalTranslation for Health Center at the University of
(05:56):
California, San Francisco, this isthe law or just study of its kind
to measure how much of these microplasticsthat penetrate the water, our food,
and even our air end up inthe most intimate recesses of the male productive
(06:17):
or reproductive anatomy male testicles. Itfollows a smaller analysis published last year by
a team in China that detected microplasticsin a half dozen human testicles and in
semen. For the current study, researchers at the University of New Mexico collected
the testicles from autopsies of people rangingin age from sixteen years of age to
(06:43):
eighty eight years of age, fromnearly fifty dogs as well after they were
neutered at a local veterinarian clinics.Dogs can function as sentinel animals for disease
and harmful chemical exposure because they're soembedded in the human environment. Plus,
canine spermatogenesis is more similar to humanprocess of producing sperm than labrats, and
(07:13):
instead of trying to count each microplasticalparticle, the researchers were able to quantify
the total amount of plastic by dissolvingall the biological tissue and separating out to
solnce about seventy five percent of whatremained after they sort of cooked out the
tissue was plastic seventy five percent incredible. Polyethylene or PE made up the largest
(07:41):
portion of that. It's the mostwidely used plastic in the world, showing
up in packaging bags and any numberof products. A doctor Camppen, a
professor the University of New Mexico Collegeof Pharmacy and one of the authors of
the study, said, and Iquote obviously, little, tiny particles of
plastic can disrupt the way cells behavein the human being. Polyvinyl chloride,
(08:11):
what's in PBC piping emerged as anotherprominent culprit and was the second most common
in dog testicles. Polyvinyl Chloride isclassified as by the way as a carcinogen,
and long term exposure, for examplein drinking water, can lead or
(08:31):
increase our risk of cancer. Therewas also an association between greater levels of
PBC and decreased weight of the testicles, the same it was seen in polyethylene
and another chemical and another one inthese plastics, which recent research suggests may
(08:54):
be harmful. Now what are theimplications, Well, doctor you says the
results are concerning, of course, and lay the foundation for more targeted studies
on the relationship between these microplastic exposureswe're getting bombarded with in the food,
water, and air, and itspotential impact on human reproductive human reproduction,
(09:16):
including sperm. An emerging body ofevidence suggests that microplastics can have toxic effects
on our reproductive health, both maleand females, but in this particular case,
they were looking at males. Inthe University of New Mexico study,
the concentration of microplastics in human testicleswas on average three times higher than in
(09:41):
dogs, and the amount in thetesticles is considerably higher than what was discovered
in the placenta and second to whatthey observed in the human brain. Now
is showing these chemical plastic contaminants canaffect the hormonal control of human reproduction at
(10:09):
different levels of the body, includingthe brain. I mean, folks,
this is just starting to come tothe surface. We've been talking about microplastics
on this radio show since the veryfirst time it was disclosed, and it
just seems like it just more andmore information is being learned about this.
The takeaway is try to avoid usingthem, and it's almost it's near impossible
(10:33):
to not use something with plastic init in a given day. But when
you can use glass or anything besidesplastics, because we're just starting to learn
about them. All right, We'regoing to come back and what we do,
we're going to have for you thisweek's installment of the Health Alternative of

the phone eight hundred six zero sixeighty eight twenty two or the website doctor
Bob dot com spelling out the worddoctor. And we have a health poll
question. We're asking you to giveus your opinion of everybody knows that fertilizer.
(15:22):
Everybody knows about fertilizer cole manure, chicken manure. When I was growing
up in the Midwest, it wasused extensively. We used in our garden,
the farmers are using it. Thedarker it was and the more stinky
it was, it was great. You had vegetables on steroids almost they really
came up strong and healthy. Well, now scientists are recommending using urine as
(15:52):
a fertilizer, I kid you not, and so we're trying to get a
measure on whether you're going to beon board with that. So the health
poll question on my personal website atdoctor Bob dot com is would you be
willing to consume vegetables knowing human urinewas used as a fertilizer? Yes or
(16:15):
no, voted doctor Bob dot com. We'll have the results on the next
show, so stick around for that. All right. Before we go back
to more phone calls and questions andnews, we have this week's health alternative
of the week. All right,So everybody knows it's barbecue season. We're
(16:45):
past Memorial Day and we're getting intothe summer and people are going to be
out in the backyard and the barbieand they're barbecuing and you smell all the
cooking flesh and grease wafting through theair, and it makes you hungry.
And I want you to have ahealth conscious barbecue and ideas about healthy barbecuing.
(17:12):
When we think of barbecues, ofcourse, we think of holidays,
you know, Fourth of July, morral Day just passed, and we picture,
of course, smoked meats, hamburgers, flipping on the barbecue, hot
dogs. All good, every familyin the backyard. It's all great.
(17:33):
However, these traditions are not thebest for your health when they are done
conventionally, because now we know, and this is of course, the message
is for people who are regular barbecuersand we're out there flipping burgers and hot
dogs and all that grease is drippingdown on the charcoal or the fire,
(18:00):
and then all the heterocyclic hydrocarbons aredrifting up in the smoke and permeating the
meat that you're about to eat. Those hydrocarbon elements do have a carcinogenic component
to them. So I'm not abig fan of barbecuing traditionally, but I'm
(18:23):
here to give you a healthier alternativeto health conscious barbecuing ideas. Research suggests
that the high heat of barbecue grillscan transform the proteins and the fats in
meat into harmful compounds. We knowthis that is well established. And you
(18:44):
know, having a barbecue once ina while no big deal. I mean,
it's not going to bother you.If it's once in a while,
like on a holiday, and thenyou dust off the barbecue grill again for
the next holiday, it's not goingto be any big deal. But you're
going to still get these procyclic hydrocarbonsif you're dripping fat and dripping proteins,
(19:07):
amino acids and meats onto the fireitself or the charcoals and it's coming back
up into the meat and smoking itbasically. And also if many of these
barbecues barbecued foods contain nitrites and nighttraits preservatives which can also have certain health
risks. So the key is maybeexperimenting as a health alternative with different foods,
(19:33):
bringing some excitement to the barbecue, something different, keeping it delicious of
course, at the same time withhealth conscious alternatives and here are a few.
That's why it qualified as the Healthalternative of the week. A health
conscious barbecue in ideas like putting veggies, more veggies on the barbie. The
(19:56):
colorful veggies like bell peppers and eggplantsand zucchinis, and leafy greens like maybe
kale are great for grilling. Ifyou haven't tried it, you should,
And maybe some dash of olive oilor your favorite herbs over the top of
them. Or how about a healthconscious barbecue that includes seafood, maybe some
(20:19):
delicious wild caught salmon that's an excellentsource of lean protein, of course,
and then you get the Omega threefatty acids, the healthy oils in your
diet. We need more of those, that's for sure, and you can
barbecue that. You also have theopportunity as a healthier alternative during barbecue season
(20:44):
to barbecue plant based meats. Imean, doctors are even starting to say,
look, you need more fiber inyour diet, less saturated fats,
because these fibers that we get inthe plant foods that we eat help to
make friendly bacteria in the gut. They also help the transit time of the
debris that we digest, and weshould eliminate as soon as possible, creating
(21:10):
peristaltic activity, the movement of themusculature of the bowel to move the waste
material out so we don't become constipated. And if you're not having at least
two ball movements a day, youare constipated or subclinically constipated. I mean
think about it sort of like birds, they eat, they drop, they
eat, they drop, Well, human beings, it should be the same
way you eat, you should dropas in fegal matter. And if you're
(21:34):
not having you know, I meana minimum of one ball mom of today,
but two is optimal. Three wouldbe ideal. And people say,
oh, I've never had that inmy life. Well, maybe you need
some help. How about more fiberin your diet? Plant based meats You
can consider veggie burgers or you cangrill tofu skewers, a fantastic alternative for
(21:57):
vegetarians or those looking to reduce meatconsumption. And I think we should.
I think Americans eat way too muchmeat. And then you get all the
antibiotics from those animals, or youget the bovine growth hormone they've been shot
up with, or other things.Yes, you can find organic meats at
(22:22):
like natural grocer's stores if you happento have one in your community, and
that would be good. But ifyou don't, you can always use lean
meats. That's what you want togo for, the leaner meats. Instead
of focusing on traditional fatty cuts, why not try grilling like boneless, skinless
chicken breasts or have you even everhad a turkey burger. You would be
(22:47):
surprised how good they are. Andyou can get organic ground turkey in a
conventional grocery store and they are fantastic, plenty of protein without the extra sagurated
fat. Marinate them in lemon juice, herbs and spices to pack them with
extra flavor, and don't forget thedessert. You can even grill fruits on
(23:10):
the barbecue, like pineapple, peaches, watermelon slices, so you have lots
of options. These are delicious atthe end of a barbecue. So there
you have it, the healthier alternativeof the week with respect to barbecuing.
(23:33):
Get started and you can find alot of these fresh organic foods at natural
grocery stores nationwide. Check them outnaturalgrocers dot com. The health alternative of
the week already coming up is thehealth Outrage of the Week. Stay tuned.

human urine was used as fertilizer? That well, that's what the US scientists
(27:53):
are now urging people to do,recycle urine into the vegetable patch. I
kid you not. Are you onboard with that? Voted Doctor Bob dot
com. Well, have the resultsnext weekend on the program. All right,
now, then it is time, ladies and gentlemen for this week's health
(28:15):
outrage of the week. She's don'tcome on each time for the health outrage
because it's nothing, but it isoutrageous, and you know it's time now.
Of course, by now, peopleare already dusting off their swimsuits and
(28:41):
they're hitting the beaches, they're hittingthe rivers, they're hitting the lakes,
but many of them are hitting thebeach and this health outrage would be sort
of like stink or Swim named stinkor Swim over half listen to this outrage.
Over half of US beaches contain unsafelevel of feces, troubling report fines.
(29:04):
So how bad is the problem inyour area? Is the question?
Well, more than half of America'sbeaches contain potentially dangerous levels of feces,
according to a new report described astroubling by experts. Testing carried out at
more than three thousand beaches across thecountry's coastlines showed that fifty five percent had
(29:33):
unsafe levels of sewage in their waterson at least one day last year.
One in nine beaches had persistently unsafelevels last year. Experts around or experts
say that around one in thirty peoplewho swim in sewage contaminated water are at
(29:53):
high risk of getting sick, eitherby swallowing the water, which can lead
to stomach problems, diarrhea, abdominalcramps, vomiting, and other infections.
Southern states along the Gulf coast area, including Florida, Texas, Louisiana,
were the worst affected, with eightyfour percent of their beaches having at least
(30:18):
one day when the water was contaminatedwith feces a year or two ago.
Americans make four hundred million visits tothe beach each year, according to the
United States Life Saving Association. Coloradobased pressure group Environmental America compiled the data
(30:42):
as part of its annual Safe forSwimming Report Now in twenty twenty, the
group estimated that fifty three percent ofbeaches had potentially unsafe levels of feces in
their water at least once in awhile. And these numbers, ladies and
(31:02):
gentlemen, are crazy numbers. Whenyou hear about stuff like this, you
don't want to go near the ocean. And it's bad. And it's sad
because it's such a beautiful thing, the beaches and the ocean, and you
shouldn't have that kind of inclination tobe afraid of it because for fear,
(31:26):
and you read once in a whileon the late night news, you'll hear
about, you know, needles andstuff washing up on the shore. But
when you see that over half ofbeaches in the United States contain these kinds
of things once in a while,it gives you pause to even want to
go to the beach. And it'stime that we do something about it.
(31:52):
It's time that we figure something outon this. And I can't tell you
why because it's very complicated, butthere's got to be a breaking point here
where people decide have had enough. My beautiful beach and the water that comes
to it from the ocean is beingpolluted. Oregon had the most polluted beaches
(32:15):
in the United States, by theway, with half of its counties three
of six having beaches that were toodirty for swimming for six to twelve months
of the year. That is incredible. Beaches surrounding the Great Lakes like those
in Wisconsin and Illinois were the thirdmost polluted, with sixty three percent having
(32:42):
feces detected at least once last year. Maybe what we need to do is
figure out why all this stuff isflowing into the water waters like they are,
and find a way to rain thatin or put greater penalties on people
who allow that or are participating it. But in any event, no matter
(33:02):
how you slic or dice it,it's the health outrage of the week,
all right now, Then let's getto right away before we let time get
away from us, to the productrecall of the week. The product recall
of the week, Here we go. Electrolux Group re announces recalls of its
(33:29):
frigidaire and ken More Electric ranges dueto a fire and burn hazard. Multiple
fires and injuries are being reported. The name of the product Frigidaire and ken
Moore smooth top freestanding electric ranges.Do you have one? You may have
(33:51):
purchased it a while ago, andthey're now doing And I've never seen one
of these rennouncements of a which meansthat they recalled it a while back and
now they're re announcing it because maybepeople didn't get the memo. The hazard,
of course, has to do it. Depending on the model. The
surface heating element can turn on spontaneouslywithout being switched on, failed to turn
(34:19):
off after being switched off, andheat to a different temperature than what's being
selected, and of course this posesa major fire hazard and burn hazard to
consumers. They've had hundreds of reportsthat the electra Lux electric ranges have been
(34:39):
problematic, people being hospitalized with injuriesand burns to their hands and arms and
also as smoke inhalation. The remedy, of course, is to contact electra
Lux or register online to participate inthe recall. Find out now. Many
(35:01):
of these units were sold at Searsand many independent appliance stores nationwide. A
while ago. So these ranges havebeen out there and been in action for
quite some time, but they arestill finding injuries occurring, which means that
people just didn't get the announcement, they didn't learn about the recalls, and
(35:23):
so that's why they are re announcingit. And they had over two hundred
thousand of these babies sold. Andinterestingly enough, and this is almost like
rare, they were manufactured in theUnited States and not Jina. That's a
rarity. So there you have theproduct recall the week. All right,

(42:07):
let's get right back to your phonecalls and questions. Next up,
we say hello to Margaret calling infrom Hillsdale, California. My question is
can you address SCT or PRP inlieu of total knee joint replacement and it's
(42:31):
it's a waste of money considering eitherof those two things. Thank you very
much. I'd appreciate hearing your answerto the question. All right, Margaret,
thank you for your phone call shoethe initial shoes using a stem cell
treatment PRP platelet ridge plasma. Theseare treatments that are now being used and
(42:55):
I might add used successfully for peoplewho are diagnosed with having joint problems who
are facing total joint replacement, andmore and more joint replacements are happening in
the United States. The orthpedic surgeonsare really it's a heyday out there and
(43:15):
there. It is true that somejoint replacements are necessary. People just wait
way too long before doing something aboutthe pain in their hip or the pain
in their knee, which should beaddressed on what's causing it. What can
you do to reduce that imbalance withinthe knee or the hip that's causing the
(43:37):
deterioration before it gets to bone onbone. So yes, Margaret, I'm
a big fan of stem cell treatmentsor these PRP plate the rich plasma injections,
anything before joint replacement, anything youcan do would be conservative compared to
a total joint replacement, even thoughit might be necessary and it has changed
(44:00):
the lives of a lot of peoplewho are suffering up before doing it.
But it doesn't come without risks. There are many risks associated with including having
to have a revision done down theroad again. So yes, explore stem
cell treatment injections to try to helpregenerate or restart the cartilage growth between the
(44:22):
bones. Try the platelet rich plasma, Try the supplements that have glucosamine and
chondroit and hyaluronic acid. Try takingextra vitamin C. Making sure also if
you have joint problems, you managethe biomechanical portion of that that may have
led up to it. So manypeople walk around with their pelvis out of
(44:45):
balance, one leg is short, one leg is long because their hips are
misaligned, their knees are misaligned, and they ought to be seeing a chiropractic
physician for a forty thousand mile tuneup on a RAI regular basis that would
help prevent a lot of these hipjoint replacement problems and knee joint replacement issues.
(45:08):
As well as having other forms ofphysical mechanical treatment massage therapy, acupuncture,
of physical therapy, exercise. Theseare all important things for proper biomechanics
that most Americans don't know enough aboutbecause their doctors aren't telling them to do
that. And you should, Imean you balance the alignment of your car
(45:29):
in order to save your tires. But yet we're not told about our bodies.
So yet, Yes, Margaret, try anything besides joint replacement for a
while and give it a proper chance, because having a joint problem is not
life threatening. It's just painful andit's life limiting. Great question. Thank
(45:51):
you for your phone call. We'llbe right back. I'm doctor Bob Martin.

here on the show. We thankyou so very much for tuning into the
program. Do hit the health uhpoll question we have posted up on my
website. Would you be willing toconsume vegetables knowing human urine was used as
fertilizer? This is something that's beingrecommended by scientists, by the way,
(49:44):
and we'll give you the details ofthat when we get our pulling question voting
on that at doctor bob dot com. Spelling out the word doctor D O
C T O R Bob dot com. Time now, ladies and gentlemen for
the Health Mystery of the Week.Man, this has got to be one
of the strangest shows I've done ina long time. Talking about urine as
(50:07):
fertilizer, plastic intesticles. I mean, wow, never done any of any
like that before, But news happens. What can I say? The Health
Mystery of the Week also move outof the way men. Cows prefer to
be cuddled by women. Mysteriously enough, They're not the first animal that springs
(50:30):
to mind when considering cuddle therapy, but cuddling cows could be an effective way
to soothe stress and anxiety, especiallyif you're a woman. According to a
brand new study, researchers recruited elevenparticipants and two Holstein bulls called Magnus and
Callum to take part in their study. The cows spent forty five minutes of
(50:52):
contact time with each person and oftensmelled or licked them and accepted food from
them. They also allowed physical interactionin the form of hugs, grooming,
petting, and kisses. The animalsrarely made unfriendly or aggressive gestures towards them,
though they would occasionally decline to interact. All participants reported having an overall
(51:17):
positive session with cows, and moststated they would recommend cow therapy to a
friend. I kid you not.Analysis also revealed the cows showed a strong
preference for interactions with women compared tomen, and it turns out women reported
(51:43):
stronger attachment behaviors towards cows. Now, that is a mystery that we cannot
explain, cannot understand, but itcertainly was a study that was done at
the University New York University where theydiscovered that the bovine assisted therapy was an
(52:09):
effective treatment for humans who were participatingin the study, but the cows definitely
preferred to be cuddled by women versusmen across the board. We don't know
why, but that's why it qualifiedas the health Mystery of the week.
All Right, we've come to theend of the show. I thank you
(52:30):
so very much for tuning into theprogram until we speak again the next time.
Make it a healthy day and ahealthy week. You've been listening to
the Doctor Bob Martin Show, BeWell.
